Canon General / Does "Banding" exist

the new crappy iMac 5K display got me thinking.

This iMac is 8-bit color (16.7 million) where monitors like the one I use are 1.07 Billion (10-bit color per channel)

To achieve an environment capable of 1 Billion plus colors, you need more than a monitor, you need a capable video card as well as you need applications capable of running 30-bit vs the standard 24.  some earlier versions of Photoshop, for example were not 30-bit capable

A simple way of seeing if you are capable of 30-bit are images like this

My monitor at work shows banding... at home it is crisp and clean gradient that is as smooth as butter.

Got me thinking.  Always hear about the 5d MK III has banding, the Nikon D810 has banding... on and on. 

Is this banding on the sensor, or like, in the image above, is it the LCD screen on back of camera, or even that pricey monitor that only handles 8-bits per channel

Not saying that issues may not exist, but would be curious if when people are doing reviews, pixel peeping images and the like, more quantitatively environmental variables were specified. 

I have really seen no issues with banding with my 5D MK III, then again, most of the time I am in a 30-bit environment

Haven't seen this discussed yet, but wondering if the 5D MK III will be able to take the LP-E6N.  Seems the only difference is the LP-E6N has 200mA more juice, and I am suspecting Canon looks at the battery in firmware, but wondering if in the future with a firmware upgrade, the 5DMK III will be able to take advantage of stronger and likely longer lasting batteries from the 7D MK II

Did not really see this covered except one small mention.  But occasionally I will be shooting and have one image that comes out like it was shot through a purple or blue filter.  It is almost like I am just seeing a single channel instead of RGB.

Is this a sign the sensor is going or other issues with the body?  The CF Card going bad?  Last time it happened was with the 24-105 and a SanDisk card

Despite the "I am switching," "I am disappointed," et al threads, still looks like Canon is ruling the roost when it comes to the biggest market... consumers... Cha-Ching!

Lenses / Going Wide on FF but which.

So did some cleaning of house on my lenses.

Out EF-S 10-22, 18-135, and EF 70-200 F/4L non-IS

Since I am focusing on the 5DMKII over my T2i which is now a backup body, my current stable of lenses are:

EF 24-105 F/4L
EF 50 F/1.4
EF 85 F/1.8
EF 70-200 F/2.8 IS II

Thinking down the road adding the 135 F/2, though the 70-200 is so capable, I think I can live with that to cover the range.

I still would like to do some Landscape / Architecture shots wide and have been weighing the 15 Fisheye, the 16-35 MK I or the 17-40 F/4L.  Price wise the 17-40 seems like a FF swap of the 10-22, but for the money and since it is slower glass, not sure if that is too much overlap with the 24-105. 

The 14 is obviously a sweet lens, but since this is not a need lens, and more of a creative / play lens for me, I am trying to keep the price down. 

Also debating whether I go for some more length and weight the 300 or 400, though the 2X converter might give me similar results.

So I just got the 24 - 105 to replace my EF-S 18-135.

First time dealing with RytherCamera, and despite the hard push on accessories when I needed to upgrade my shipping, overall arrived fine... White Box special which I would have preferred to know about up front, but New is New and at $900, not too bad

I still have not learned how to "test" a lens, but gave it a 5 minute look over, all elements look clean, AF seems quick and accurate, nothing seems loose....

The only one thing that concerns me is the zoom feels firm.  It is not tight, but compared to my 70-200 F4L Non-IS just seems like there is a small degree more needed to turn the ring, and there is a tiny bid more sound when turning the ring compared to the 70-200.  Have a full warranty from Canon, but looking to more experienced folks as to if this is normal, a "feature" of the lens, or a sign of slightly poorer build that should be sent in for servicing.

O.k.  Bit of a quandry and looking for suggestions. 

I currently have a t2i and debating moving up to a 7D the 7D replacement or a 5dMkII.  That decision has been postponed til early 2012 to see what Canon does.  I have been close to pulling a trigger on a 7D a few times.

Current main lenses:

EF 50 F1.4L
EFS 10-22
EF 70-200 F4L (non-IS)
EFS 18-135

I got the 10-22 because I like shooting landscapes and like the wide angle shots
I primarily have the 18-135 as my walk around lens and use the 70-200 next most (though AF sticks around 3m)

I primarily shoot portrait/fashion or sport (daylight - triathlons).  I am a newer photographer, still learning.

While I like the 70-200 F4 I have lost some shots because of non-IS with the sports.  I don't anticipate shooting that much at night like football, etc., and shots I lost probably could have been saved shooting faster speed, though might have been pushing the F4 (cyclists going 40 mph)

F4 IS will help me out a little, the 2.8 Non-IS will be better for shooting fashion (I actually like shooting people with the 70-200 )

The 70-300 gives me IS, I lose a bit of speed, but it also gives me a little more distance, especially on a crop.  The IS probably gets me to F3.5 versus my current F4 Non-IS

Weight is a non factor for me.

I am also more than likely going to sell the 18-135 and step up to the 24-105 F4L and interested on comments on that or if there is a better stepping stone for me.  Was also debating if the 24-70 was a better selection or is it nice to have overlap (i.e. 70-200 and 24-105 versus 70-200 and 24-70 which gives me a better combo)
