EOS Bodies / Am I the only one excited about the new 7D mk2?
« on: September 22, 2014, 01:47:23 AM »
So its no great secret i'm not the worlds biggest fan of crop sensors...

but the EOS-M is a great little camera to support my 5Dmk3 for various things and means no lens changing

so looking at the specs of the 7D2 I am actually pretty excited about this
well not excited enough to buy it bleeding edge but say in a year or so when prices drop and bargains are around or sales i am definately interested in picking one up to use on my tamron 150-600

I have pretty high expectations for the new AF system given how great the 5Dmk3 and 1DX AF systems are

but all I read are posts about people crying that its not what they wanted.

so anyone else excited about the potential for this new camera?

Technical Support / 5Dmk3 grip rubber coming loose
« on: April 07, 2014, 05:16:47 PM »
So I usually don't post problems with gear here I usually just take it to get fixed...

but the camera is well out of warranty now so i doubt there will be a free fix, and i'm in china not Australia where i bought the camera.

the top part of the grip just below the shutter button is starting to come loose, its a minor annoyance really but I'm a bit worried about it getting worse, has this been an issue many have experienced? does anyone know what it would cost to have fixed should it get significantly worse?

to me one of the worst things about canon in general is only having a 1 year warranty on very expensive equipment that is not even internationally recognised

Photography Technique / photographing motorsport particularly F1
« on: March 23, 2014, 08:41:05 PM »
So I've got some tickets to the shanghai Formula 1 in april and plan to give the tamron 150-600 a good workout on the 5Dmk3

i've never shot motorsport before so looking for some good tips on shooting fast cars in action

panning shots ? what shutter speed is best?
AF settings? any good tips?

I should be fine with the models / promo girls
gonna take some fine glass, sigma 35 1.4, sigma 85 1.4 and canon 135L a mitros flash an odin controller and a roundflash modifier it's perfect for on or off camera and folds up super compact.

I'll have the EOS-M with the 11-22 to cover wide stuff better grab a couple more cheap batteries for this puppy though

Hi there Sydney area pros etc,

My Wife has a collection that has been selected as one of the feature artists in the upcoming Head On Photo festival in Sydney

she will be exhibiting in one of the main galleries and we are currently in china but are based in perth, she was planning on using a perth printer she uses regularly but then has to transport 30 or so large prints to sydney to exhibit

so I was thinking its probably better to just send the images to sydney and have them printed there so looking for the absolute best most reliable pro print house there is in sydney. Its all low key mix of colour and black and white, will need to be on high end fine art paper I guess.

so give us your recommendations please :D

sorry can't post the images as they are politically sensitive and NSFW and she would not allow me to put them up here :D

Software & Accessories / really right stuff ultra light bullhead
« on: November 14, 2013, 08:56:45 PM »

I'm looking at getting one of these tiny guys for a set of very small portable tripod legs i got
just wondering if anyone has one? and thoughts on how well it works? load capacity etc
biggest rig that it will take will be a 5D with L bracket and 16-35 or maybe a 135L
possibly might use a 70-200 on it but not planning to regularly

also looking at the slightly larger BH30 as it has pano ability where as the 25 doesn't

also i don't use any lever clamp style head at the moment, all mine are screw knob type is the lever clamp style better / worth the extra cash?

I'm REALLY interested in seeing the next prime canon release with IS in line with the 24, 28 and 35
hopefully they follow up soon with a 50, i'm hoping its at least f1.8 with IS and sharp wide open. If its 2.8 i'll cry like a little girl

and wanted some free stuff

EOS-M / EOS-M tilt shift adapter ?
« on: May 06, 2013, 07:09:08 PM »
would it be possible to make an adapter for an EOS-M that allowed you to turn any EF lens into a tilt shift ?
looking at the amount of available room in the flange distances i think its probably possible.
It would be a pretty killer little piece of kit

Lenses / Added dandelion chips to my lensbaby and samyang 8mm
« on: March 12, 2013, 10:37:15 PM »
I grabbed a couple of these from this seller off ebay

They arrived yesterday and I installed them on my Lensbaby composer pro with sweet 35 optic
and on my samyang 8mm fisheye

really well made and come with a really nice accurate little plastic locating template so you get the chip in exactly the right spot as well as some little plastic filler/spacers to bring the height up (which i needed on both these lenses.
I glued them on with araldite a 2 part epoxy glue that sets quite fast but not too fast allowing me to get the position just right, importantly the glue does not have vapour like superglue which could mess up the rear lens element.

I followed these programming instructions and it all went perfectly

I hope this info helps anyone else looking to do the same

Canon General / your scariest photography moment?
« on: March 10, 2013, 09:45:23 PM »
I accidently formated the memory card on my 5Dmk2 mid wedding on the weekend,... after the ceremony  :o
luckily transcend recover x got all the files back but it was a pretty stressfull experience  :-[
must have had the menu item still on format and somehow managed to bump the menu button, then ok then the wheel 1 notch to the right then ok again!
lucky i realised before i shot any more frames on the card so i just swapped cards out immediately and stashed the card in my bag to see if i could recover later.

what silly thing have you done?

Technical Support / Random Massive light blasts from 580Exii
« on: March 10, 2013, 07:49:04 PM »
I've been using 580exii flashes for quite a while now
they have always worked pretty well, I have 6 of them
on the weekend at a wedding 2 of these started randomly dumping massive flash blasts out
(so much that it seems more powerfull than even a full power blast)
anyone else had this happen? any idea what it is
this has only happened in an on camera flash application, the same flashes hooked up to odins seem
to behave themselves,
it was also happening on 5Dmk2 and mk3 bodies

Speedlites, Printers, Accessories / anyone used transcend 1000x CF cards?
« on: January 21, 2013, 08:09:36 PM »

Anyone used these yet?
I have been using transcend 400x and 600x cards for ages now and have a dozen or so and never had a problem with any of them, just wondering if anyone have used these new 1000x ones yet and if they are any good
