Canon General / Thanks Adorama and Helen Oster !
« on: Today at 01:53:39 PM »
My new 100-400mm L was shipped last Friday, and I am enjoying it.

Though not a fault of
Adorama's, UPS messed up on the overnight delivery, it was over a weekend, so they really messed up.

I emailed Helen Oster late Thursday night, and there was a shipping refund when I fired up my computer this morning.   Thanks Helen.

I know how UPS works, but there is no excuse for not putting it on a plane Friday night, they obviously never opened their van until Sunday, when the finally scanned it.  Then, they sent me a Monday delivery notice, but missed the flight, so they did not put it on a plane until Monday.  Then, it barely made it.  It arrived at 6:15 Tuesday morning and someone apparently delivered it to the driver later in the day.  There was no status saying it was on the truck like we usually see.

UPS has missed 2/3 of their delivery dates in the past 3 weeks, I'd have thought they would have learned last year.  Most of my deliveries are routine, so its no problem.

I'm looking forward to pre-ordering that new 50MP camera from Adorama when it arrives!

FOR SALE Photo Equipment / Seller Forum Extended thru January, 2015
« on: November 29, 2014, 01:05:01 PM »

I'll keep it going for another month, maybe more.

The test sales forum is closing soon, so we are not currently adding more members.

The forum software is being rewritten, and once that is completed, we will reconsider a selling forum.

Site Information / Visibility of CR Boards
« on: November 22, 2014, 12:19:10 PM »
I was asked about the ability to see a board this morning, which led me to discover than many members were not able to see all of our boards.

That is fixed now, so if you are seeing more boards, that's why.

1D X Sample Images / Create a Topic to Show YOUR Images taken with a 1DX
« on: November 06, 2014, 09:29:40 PM »
I suggest that you create your own topic to show your images.  That's why a entire board was created for a single camera model.

If too many images appear in a single topic, then it slows the rendering down and gets difficult to view.

At some point, topics with too many pages will be locked.

Macro / Yellow Jackets on Sunflower
« on: August 11, 2014, 11:34:47 PM »
I bought a used P&S camera today, so one of the things I tried out was a closeup just as the sun was setting.  I wanted to see how the camera acted with a hand held close focus situation.  I found it quite difficult to get reasonably sharp images, but finally did get a couple.

This one is cropped to about 80% of the original size.

Site Information / Small or Large Thumbnails - Poll
« on: August 09, 2014, 12:32:06 AM »
I have reduced the size of image thumbnails to 200 X 200. A viewer must click on a thumbnail to see a larger image.

At the same time, I increased the number of images allowed from 6 to 10.

The issue is that it takes a lot of time to have a large number of  770 X 770 loading, and not everyone has a blazing fast internet speed.

What do you, the users think?  I do not know how many users have fast internet, or how many have slow internet, so tell us.

I'm willing to go with the majority on this.  The poll runs for 5 days.

Thanks for your input.

ADDED:

The forum only allows one size regardless of the board.

I'll look at the options for removing images.  As I recall, they are not repeated when used as a attachment, but when someone embeds a link, its copied.  We would not  ban embedding links.

FOR SALE Photo Equipment / Welcome to the Seller forum
« on: August 05, 2014, 02:12:26 PM »
Welcome to the Beta Test of the Sellers Forum.  This is a Canadian based Forum, so Canadian Laws and regulations must be followed.  We have members from around the world, so be sure to indicate where you and the equipment are located.  I'd suggest avoiding international sales unless you are experienced, there are lots of customs rules shipping surcharges and the like that might come back on you.

Everyone Can View this board, and e-mail a seller, but only those who are part of the test can post equipment for sale.

Its not totally clear if we can make this work successfully, there are some limitations that would require custom programming to handle, so we will live with them.

This is a test, so only a few will be accepted.  We will have to manually grant them access.  I'll  let those who are accepted know, and post a update here when the beta is full.  I don't know when the beta will be ready to start, we have had some very preliminary tests with the moderators and three members.

I suggest that you do not actually try to sell something during the test, the reason is that the test forum may be brought down without notice if it causes system problems or interferes with the CR forum.

If all works out, then the site owner (Craig) will decide on giving a ok to open it up to a wide group of users.

The Beta will have its members and posts removed before it can move to production, this is a limitation of the subscription based software.  Members are called subscribers by the system.  I'll have more about that later.

The Production Version will likely be available to members who have a significant number of posts. It is also planned to charge a fee (TBD) via PayPal to subscribe to the service.

Canon Rumors is not responsible for Fraud by seller or buyer or for failure of purchased equipment to meet your expectations.  We merely put you in touch, but from that point on, you must accept the risk.

Using PayPal can reduce the risk, you must use it properly.  Both the Buyers and Sellers need to be on the lookout.  We do not have a "Reputation" system for sellers or buyers, that would require custom programming.  PayPal proceeds can be grabbed back by PayPal if bogus payment sources are used, and only certain transactions are guaranteed, such as in country merchandise sales with signature required for over $250.  Even if you follow the rules, it can take a while to get your money.  Buyers are at risk as well, if you get a box of rocks, it might be very difficult to get your money back.  Using a credit card (In the USA) can help protect you from a bogus shipment.

Anyone caught misusing PayPal by violating or flaunting their rules will be permanently banned.  For example, PayPal rules do not allow requiring  buyers to pay surcharges for use of PayPal.  If you charge a shipping and handling fee, it must not be just for PayPal or credit card users.

"4.6 No Surcharges. You agree that you will not impose a surcharge or any other fee for accepting PayPal as a payment method. You may charge a handling fee in connection with the sale of goods or services as long as the handling fee does not operate as a surcharge and is not higher than the handling fee you charge for non-PayPal transactions."

Site Information / NEW ___ Sell Your Gear - Beta Test
« on: August 05, 2014, 02:09:40 PM »
Those interested in testing a beta photography equipment selling board may contact me to signup.  This is for test purposes only, and only the first 15 who have 30 or more posts will be accepted.  If you do not have at least 30 posts, you will have to wait for a later test, or for the final implementation.

The Beta has been extended for about 2 months, because a major revision to the forum is in the works and its wise to test on that  before any firm implementation.  I typically give members a two month trial period, but can extend it on request.

I'll  let those who are accepted know, and post a update here when the beta is full.  I don't know when the beta will be ready to start, we have had some very preliminary tests with the moderators and three members.

If all works out, then the site owner (Craig) will decide on giving a ok to open it up to a wide group of users.

The Beta will have its members removed from the new selling board (Not from CR) before it can move to production, this is a limitation of the subscription based software.

The Production Version will likely be available only to members who have a significant number of posts. It is also planned to charge a fee (TBD) via PayPal to use the service.  The fee will probably be $15 for a 90 day period, but its not determined.
