EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Canon Announces the Canon EOS 6D DSLR
« on: September 17, 2012, 11:04:14 AM »
I own a 5D III and think it's really great. This, IMHO, is a horrible release. It looks video oriented but does really even pull that off. I'm not sure who they think is going to buy this as an entry level full frame (changing lenses anyway) over the D600.

B&H Prices right now:
Canon 6D + 24-70 II = $4400
Nikon D600 + 24-70 = $3985

is there anything the canon will do that is worth $415 to a normal consumer? from the samples so far the D600 has really excellent low light capabilities and the ISO handling looks quite nice. I don't understand what the appeal is for the 6D.

Specs should have been:
22MP (5D3)
45pt AF system (old 1 series) or the 7D system reworked for full frame
cropped 96-97% view finder
built in flash
4 fps
1 x CF card
lesser build quality than 5D3

It also starts shipping in 2 days as opposed to 2 months and knowing Canon's track record might miss Christmas.  I told someone yesterday who is looking for a camera for this fall to go with a D600 as I feel it's just a step below my 5D3 while costing way less. As a consumer (I have no vested interest in Canon) I want to see these companies fight to put out the best cameras possible as we are the ones who really get the best out of it.

I want to pick up a 70-200IS II but the $2200 price is total crap. I can wait.

However this camera turns out, 5D3 owners will be burned.

I'm a 5D3 owner and I won't be, I still think my camera is great for doing what I need to do and a new camera release isn't going to change that. I shoot at bars, clubs, and other dimly lit places frequently and the 5D3 is the best (1dx maybe withholding), way better than the D800 for that. I shoot macro and flowers and that too sometimes requires pushing the iso.

If this body does something that I need, which I doubt, I can pick one up for the cost of a body with all of my lenses working.

/the 5d3 isn't perfect. but the things I miss are more rarely talked about such as exposure on focus point or a better metering engine. Images that are sharper out of the camera as an option for when I don't want to do post.

Sorry to hear about this horrible news. My thoughts go out to you in this hard time.

Don't have a facebook, guess I can't go. Thanks Canon!

I understand that this is trying to get people to buy canon gear and not for suckers like me who already own a 5DIII but I think it would be a huge value add if Canon did this for their customers.

Canon EF Zoom Lenses / Re: Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM

Here are some shots with my 16-35 II and the 5D MKIII. I've throw in some really low light deals in there too, it was great for low light on my t2i and does even better on the 5D.

ISO 10,000

ISO 25,600

I got the same answers from B&H as everyone else. If I don't have a camera being shipped to me by this weekend I will find a retailer who wants to sell me something, even if it's the kit.

Another vote for the amazing MP-E65. Hard to get the goods but amazingly worth it when you do. This lens is the reason that macro boards are 90% Canon.

Canon General / Re: Canon still preferred choice by professionals

I have the 5DIII on order and if lacks on the AF or metering then I'm out. I want a camera the will capture the moments in my life. I really like canon for many reasons but they currently seem to be resting on their market share. This has traditionally been a very bad sign for companies as getting market share back in tech has been nearly impossible.

EOS Bodies / Re: Nikon D800 vs Canon 5d3 sample images.
« on: March 06, 2012, 02:33:04 PM »
I don't think it would be that hard for them to release softer images and change the default softness vs noise via a firmware update once they've had a couple thousand people pay to beta test it for them (me included). I agree that they look softer than I would like but the JPEG of the fisherman at 12,800 looks very useable for web which is a lot more than I can say for the 5d MKII.

Yes, Canon has the larger user base and I think the 5dIII will appeal to a larger % of those users than the D800 especially given Nikon's traditional stance on more MPs.

The woman in the red trench has the focus (imho) missed. On the full version you can see her gloves are very much in focus while her face isn't. I think the samples in general were pretty weak and Canon does an inconsistent job posting good and bad samples for their products.

1st post here...

I believe the desire to want people to do what you're doing not based upon their needs or wants is not the most mature thing ever. If I was a studio photog or a landscape guy the D800 is a pretty sexy looking camera and unlike medium format Nikon lenses can be had at a similar price and with nearly as large of a range as Canon. I personally have thought a lot about the 645D and realize that it would be a really fun camera to go shoot with and possible take some great photos.

There are people who will like and not like the direction that any company moves in and will switch companies based upon that. This affects me in no way what so ever, I wish them the best of luck and I hope they find what they are looking for.
