Lenses / Re: Quick Comparison: Canon's new 400mm Options
« on: December 19, 2014, 10:50:14 AM »
I know the LR guys say wait to see more copies tested, but those initial numbers are a bit disappointing. Nothing like, as they say, the 400mm DO comparison or the years between the mk1 and mk2 24-70L.

I rented it from LR for next week and I've used the mk1 in the past. We'll see how it goes, especially with the new IS and non-pump design.

The bulbous front element of the UWA Tamrons preventing any filters is what stops me from picking one up. I have a 24-70L now that I love, but would be great to get a bit wider sometimes. I've used the 17-40L, but the vignetting is pretty bad wide open. f/4 isn't horribly bad, especially if you have a newer camera like a 5D3.

I started entering myself in Viewbug.com contests and joined for a year to get into more. The contests give me a mission to take a certain type of photo and whether or not I win the prize in the end, I may get a really nice photo or set of photos from the trip out. This has helped my lull lately.

Lenses / Re: Canon EF 16-35 f/4L IS Sample Images

So, according to the Chinese site, those were taken at f/8. I want to see what it looks like at f/4 before I start comparing it to the 17-40.

$1199 for the 16-35 f/4L ...good job Canon. Obviously I'll wait for some reviews and then for places like BuyDig and what not to drop it under or right at 1k if its a winner.

Pricewatch Deals / Re: Deal: Adobe Lightroom 5 $80 via Amazon

Awesome, thanks for the heads up! I finally picked it up to upgrade from LR 4.x. Wanted to wait a bit for them to work out the "new release bugs". I've been upgrading since 2 or 3, so I just grabbed this full box for $2 more.

Pricewatch Deals / Re: EOS M & Lens Sale at B&H Photo

The 50 1.4 has been $314 at Amazon for well over 2 months now. Not really "on sale" from B&H at that point.

Lenses / Re: 24-70mm lens. Which one?

What are you looking to do with it / what do you shoot? You should figure out what you love so much about the 17-55 first. If its the wide end, maybe look at a 17-40L ($849). It vignettes a bit on FF until you stop down to about f/8, but its an otherwise great lens and will save you half the cost of a 16-35L II, which only does marginally better in the vignette area.

One option you could go with is to buy the 6D and then use LensRentals.com or BorrowLenses.com or someone local and try out the various ones people suggest for far less $$ than outright buying and then not liking what you bought. That's how I go about it before I plunk down for a new lens these days.

Very interesting setup. I never would have thought of an EOS-M w/ a 50mm 1.4 or 1.8 like that. Hrmmm. Nice shots btw.

Lenses / Re: 100MM 2.8 USM or THE 100MM L for portrait and macro work??

I have a 5D3 and a 100mm f/2.8L Macro and I love love love it for portraits. It is insanely sharp. Oh and its great for macro too =)

Give me a new middle of the road (less than the 50 1.2L) 50mm 1.4 to replace the build and optics of the current 50 1.4 and price it at ~$400 and I'm sold. I don't need IS on my 50mm.

Software & Accessories / Re: Cheap UV filters: are they worth it?

Why would you put cheap crap in front of your nice glass? I use B+W filters and I've constantly been happy with them.

I agree camera phones are getting better. Look at the Nokia Lumia. It won't replace my 5D3+lenses, which gives me versatility and customisations that a phone cannot do (at this point). My phone (HTC One) has a pretty good camera and when I don't have my 5D3 on me, I use it instead. Do I wish I had my 5D3 instead? Hell yes. But it compliments it, it doesn't replace it.

Software & Accessories / Re: External HDD for backups
« on: August 18, 2013, 12:27:30 PM »
I currently don't have any off-site backup, but that is about to change. What I have is my data on a mechanical HDD and backed up on a secondary mechnical HDD that only wakes up when I copy to it. When I go on vacation, both drives are pulled and put in my gun safe.
I was pointed to www.CrashPlan.com by some people and this is one of the major features that caught my eye, that alot of you are complaining about with Carbonite.
Seeded Backup and Restore to Your Door
If you have a lot to back up, the initial backup might take longer than you'd like. So we offer a ‘seed service’ where we send you an external hard drive to use for your first backup. After you send it back, we transfer the data directly to CrashPlan Central, saving a lot of time on your first backup.
Similarly, if you ever need to restore a large amount of data, use CrashPlan’s Restore to Your Door service, to have us ship your computer backup archive to you on a hard drive, so you can restore locally.
