Underwater / Re: Advice on inexpensive underwater system

I did a video recently on this. Hope it helps: Underwater Photography - Underwater Housings

If you are just getting started, a Go Pro really is a cost effective way to go.

Nice video. Thanks for sharing.

Lenses / Re: Buy Canon 24-70l II today or wait for Newer version with IS?

Enjoy the lens that you bought. If/when the next lens comes out you can sell this one and buy the new one.  Canon lens hold their value well so it won't end up costing you too much.

Why not look at a GoPro Hero 3?

how often does this lens come on sale? I've been eyeing it for quite sometime and haven't seen anything except on e(vil)bay for similar items or used.

It has had the $200 rebate for awhile now but this is the first time I've seen it discounted further and I've been watching for the past 6-7 months.

B&H has lowered their price to match on the 85mm for sure. I just ordered one.

I've used this company for data recovery a couple of times for work.  They were successful both times recovering the data.

You send them the disk and for a fee they will let give you a file listing that they can recover. They will then quote how much they will charge for recovering the files.  As others have said, it's not cheap. I would definitely call and tell them your situation to see what they recommend.

Canon General / Re: Remote Shutter Release for Canon 5D3

Canon's little RC-6 (and RC-1) will trigger it, but that's IR so only works from the front.  I used the RC-1 with both a 7D and 5DII and it's great.

Since the 1D X doesn't have an IR receiver, I recently picked up a hähnel Giga T Pro II, works well and would be compatible with almost any Canon dSLR.  Beyond basic triggering, does interval timing, etc.

+1 for the hähnel Giga T Pro II

I check my shots occasionally when shooting ice hockey and have never had that happen to me.

Nice - I picked up my 1D X from Crutchfield during their double rewards promotion. I used my points on the 17-40 f/4 L for $0. I'm waiting for them to have another double reward promotion so I can pick up a 85mm f/1.2 L and save some $$.

I'd just get a Blackrapid.  In fact, I did...twice.

+1. Love my BR's.

I am like you...I have never found presets to work for me.  I enjoy my own interpretation of how my photos should look and prefer to start from my own negative (or raw file).

I just became a Gold Member (no request of for SSN or TaxID) last month so have not had the need to use service yet.  I have enjoyed their equipment evaluation program as I am trying to build my kit and it is a great perk to be able to request L glass to try out prior to purchasing.

Like others have said I use it for portraits and landscape when on a tripod.  I like the focus at 10x zoom.  It still feels a bit clumsy for me and at this point I can't see ever shooting in live mode while handheld.
