Recommendations for fast & sharp 24 ff prime?
« on: March 05, 2013, 03:49:50 AM »
Dear all,
I look for a fast 24 prime on 5D3. Not sure, if manual focus will be ok with standard screen. I have 24-105, which is a bit buly for my taste. Have a legacy Sigma 24/2.8 originally for Nikon with an EOS adapter. Tested it seems not "sharp enough", especially at infinity. Not sure if this is lens or adaptor. I recall from the old days that the little Sigma was considered better than original Nikon.
Any ideas, budget up to 600€.
Thanks
Olaf

Is there anything else? Go directly to the L 24mm f/1.4 II. But you knew this already. It's one of the all time great wides. Anyone who has one generally wishes they'd got one sooner.

What is sharp, what is fast?

- 24 1.4: is fast, but has weeknesses at large apertures (vignetting > meens not fast at the edge) and comas.
- TS/e 24: sharp but not fast, manual Focus.
- replace 24-105 by 24 -70: faster ans sharper
- the new 24 2.8 is: faster ans sharper

The Samyang 24mm seems the best option that fits your budget, but you'll have to live with MF.

One cannot have everything after all :)

As I was reading your post, I started to think about the 24 1.4 II until I saw your budget  :(

You may want to save up for longer to get the above otherwise the 24 2.8 (as per hendrik-sg) may be a possibility.

Maybe that focal lenght with fast aperture will be the next release in Sigma's new Art Line...but you will need to raise your budget even to float that boat... There is always shoping for used equipment or refurb.....

Dear all,

thanks for the helpful advice, the budget is indicative, not limiting, but I do not shoot for a living.

Anyone has an opinion on this one: Sigma 24 mm F1,8 EX DG?

IQ-wise: EF 24 2,8 IS compared to EF-L 24 1,4 II?

Is the 24-70 II really up to prime IQ at the wide-end wide-open?

The 24 2.8 IS is close to the 24L II IQ wise, although the 24L II is still a little bit sharper and has less vignetting at comparable f-stops.

And yes, the 24-70II can match the performance of the 24L II and 35L and is sharper than whatever exists at 50mm for Canon.  It is weaker at 70mm than at 24mm, but is still very good.  The main advantage of the L primes now is their max aperture.
