Planet5D sat down with Chuck Westfall to bring more information about the Canon EOS-1D X that doesn’t appear in the official Canon press release.

With the 1D X we did get many advancements including the removal of the 12 minute recording time. I found it interesting that we did finally get real clarification from Canon that indeed the main reason for limiting recording time to under 30 minutes is a taxation issue in Europe. We also know that there’s still the 4gb file limit set by the file system used on the CF cards, but Canon has implemented a system that creates new files when the first one fills up – up to the 29.59 minute time limit to get under the taxation issue. We were also told that if this camera were shooting over 30 minutes of video, the price would need to increase about 30% to cover it! So I believe that the vast majority of people needing longer shooting times will be happy with this new compromise.

Additional interesting information I gleaned from the RG article that wasn't on the official Canon praise release:

- AF sensitivity is now down to -2EV, like the Olympus flagship, 1 stop better than all the previous Canon & Nikon pro cams.

- in-cam CA correction corrects both lateral *AND* axial chromatic aberration, so they maybe 4 years late with in-cam CA correction compared to the Nikon DSLRs, but at least they improved upon it by correcting both ways. I don't know if there is even software that corrects for axial CA now? Not updated on that.

- the new dual multi-controller mini-joysticks; the QCD apparently has a touchpad within the center for fine correction.

- reflex mirror blackout time is now just 60ms down from 80ms, no mention if the shutter release lag time has also been lowered.

I just read from chuck westfall that the 1DX is two stops better in high iso than the 1DIV...  which I guess would mean that in the DxO sports "low light iso" it would roughly be 5280 iso or about 2/3 of a stop better than the current champ.. the D3s

It'll be interesting to see how the 36 Mp Nikon D800 will fare in this..  it would seem that it if improves over the D700 it won't be by much.

Wow, great link, thanks for sharing. So it seems that the 1Dx shutter release lag has also been shortened, to 36ms, worse case 55ms.

Duh - because it's a bigger number.      Just like 21 beats 18...wait, oops, Canon just told us that a smaller number is better.

1280x720 at 60fps?!!! Sheesh. A 550D can do that.

I can see they really addressed the demands of videographers and filmmakers for faster fps. So ho hum. Nothing to see here. Moving on...

That's just an optional resolution.....It has 2 Digic 5 processors and 1 Digic 4 vs the 5D's 1 Digic 4.  No more 12 minute maximum clip length, significantly reduced color artifacts, much higher ISO performance.

This is Canon's flagship STILL camera, they did enough considering video is not it's primary function.  And considering there are 2 new video cameras coming out in a few weeks it would be foolish to push this towards filmmakers.

it's not easy to read off a large sensor that has many MP and scale down without lots of line skipping which makes for moire/aliasing as with the current DSLR video, a pure 2k cam with a smaller sensor doesn't have to deal with any of that so it's easier to give it all sorts of faster modes
