More Images of the PowerShot G1 X Mark II
« on: February 11, 2014, 06:24:01 AM »

More images have appeared for the upcoming Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II. As we can see, the body is a lot slimmer than the previous version of the G1 X.

This camera is set to be announced tomorrow for the CP+ show in Tokyo, Japan.

Rumored focal length range is 24-150 mm. Image shows 12.5-62.5 mm. So, what is the size of the sensor? The above numbers show sensor size is ~ 4/3 sensor. So, Canon entering the 4/3 market but only for compact cameras? Interesting

My God, this is a thousand times uglier than previous G1X.
- Missing compensation dial? Nice!
- Missing swivel screen? Wonderful?
- Still keeping the totally useless optical viewfinder? Excellent!

Well, f2.0, 5x zoom, and 24mm are the main changes. Not minor, but still, personally, don't care too much. I hate ultra-wide shots, high ISO on prev G1X is excellent so 1-stop is not such a big deal.

One welcome change I see are the protection blades in front of the lens. With my G1X, it annoys me a bit to place the cap back again all the time.

Of course, f2.0 means larger lens so I am very curious to see the macro specs.

It looks to me like Canon are targeting the same market as the Panasonic GM1, but in a slightly different way by offering a fixed lens with a larger focal length range and faster aperture. It's not a bad idea, but it would have been nice to have a front control dial and an EVF.

That's not an optical viewfinder, think red eye reduction :)

The 1 extra stop in the lens is eaten by the smaller 4/3 sensor, the smaller sensor also explains the better macro focusing distance on paper.

While I'm not particularly interested in this camera, I check the specs of new cameras (particularly from Canon) - to obtain an idea of the routes of certain technology / innovations.

Hopefully it will have a great sensor in it. I bought a Sony RX-100 last year, as an engagement present (I gave it to my fiancee - because of it's IQ and mainly the size, but I was also considering the G1 X).  Must say the RX-100 does a great job - but it took a bit of getting used to the menu (as I am just so used to Canon these days!)

The lens on this camera should hopefully be a decent one ... though I don't particularly like the fact it has so many 'protective blades' at the front of the lens... looks too busy (as does most of the body for that matter) - and surely more blades means more potential for issues....

Looking forward to reviews about it but more importantly seeing photos from it!

I'm not a brand-fanatic. What I do appreciate is using my 7D and 350D cameras along with a host of lenses & many accessories to capture quality photos, and share with friends.

I'm not clear on the specs of the G series, but does this mean the MkII has a smaller sensor than the MkI?

when the MK2 has a around 2x cropfactor sensor then yes.

i think it´s obvious that the camera has a flash. :)
so this former complain people can forget.

not a swivel screen but a tilt screen as it seems. i don´t care much.
but i hope it´s touch. lets hope the rumors are right on that.

could be my next "always with me" camera.
when image quality is noticable better then sonys RX100 II and speed is not too bad.

3 FPS sound like a joke today, compared with other competing cameras.

Well so far I'm very interested in this camera. I was considering buying the original G1X, but since I started seeing these rumours, I have been holding out.
If the sensor is smaller to allow for closer Macro, then that is acceptable. However I have not seen anything stating this yet.
Shame it does not have the swivel screen but at least it will still tilt, which was one of the selling points of the original.
A slightly faster/longer lens is also good.
Very much looking forward to seeing the official specs!

Thanks, still a big enough sensor I'd say. Interesting camera - the G series could do with a little reduction in size ;)

OK, so either the picture is wrong, or the proposed spec of 25-150 equivalent in the other rumor is wrong. I would lean toward the spec in the other rumor being wrong. ;)

Note that NO rumor so far has said anything about the sensor itself. It MIGHT be 4/3, which would rough out to 25-125. But, what if the sensor is actually larger, and the effective range is 20-100 (for example)? Or, what if it is the same 1.5" crop factor as the G1X, but uses a crop of the 70D sensor? that would make it ~23-115, or 24-120, depending upon the rounding used, and about 16 MP (again +/-, depending upon rounding).

Sounds like a winning combo to me...

(Corrected 1.5x to 1.5 inch crop)

Rumored focal length range is 24-150 mm. Image shows 12.5-62.5 mm. So, what is the size of the sensor? The above numbers show sensor size is ~ 4/3 sensor. So, Canon entering the 4/3 market but only for compact cameras? Interesting

The current G1X has a 15.1-60.4mm lens, billed as a 28-112mm equivalent. With the same size sensor, 12.5-62.5mm gives a 23-115mm equivalent, a 5:1 ratio. The rumor calls for a 6.25:1 ratio, so it would seem the rumor is wrong. My guess is that Canon will call it a 24-120mm lens. That's fine with me, although the absence of a built-in OVF or EVF means I won't be buying it.

yes, look at the camera it says 5x zoom.
so the best guess yet is that the rumor is wrong.
