What has become of the long-rumored Canon 50mm IS?
« on: April 17, 2014, 08:08:15 PM »
I am extremely tempted to just pull the trigger on the new Sigma, but, I'm finding myself doing more and more hand-held video where external stabilization is just not practical. (see, here: http://vimeo.com/m/92210589)

I have the 28mm f/2.8 IS and it's probably my favorite lens right now.

I like the 50mm focal length even better, I was hoping the release of the Sigma would prompt Canon to at least announce something but...all I hear are crickets!

"IS" is great. In prime world, I prefer f1.2 or f1.4 for more creamy bokeh over 3-4stop IS. I do wish for an UWA f4 with "IS" in near future ::)
Body: 1DX -- 5D III
Zoom: 24-70L II -- 70-200L f2.8 IS II
Prime: 40mm -- 85L II -- 135L -- 400L f2.8 IS II

A lot of people are wondering what all those employees a Canon have been doing.  Perhaps they have too many high paid managers and bookkeepers that block everything.  Big corporations tend to have issues like that, and it takes a changing of the guard to overcome stagnation.

However, for a corporation, the bottom line is the important thing, and Canon is doing much better than the competition who are spending a lot of money releasing new cameras that sell in very small quantities to a limited number of people, and make no or little profit.  Canon's bread and butter is mass production at low prices, and they stick to what works.

Me too.  I just wish they'd announce something about this lens.  The 50mm spot has such a weird confluence of lenses in Canon's lineup.  I want to retire my nifty-fifty but I don't know where to turn on this.
Canon 6d, t1i, 20/2.8, 28/1.8, 40/2.8, 50/1.8II, 100/2.8 macro, 70-300/4-5.6, g1x, 430exII, 90ex
Elan 7N with 28-105/3.5-4.5II, Rebel G with 35-70/3.5-4.5, A-1 with 28/2.8, 50/1.8, and 135/3.5
