Anything shot with a 1DX II
« on: May 03, 2016, 12:56:46 PM »
Someone had to start this thread ...

Out of respect for this fantastic camera, I should have posted something spectacular as the first image. Instead I am posting a poorly composed mallard duck. However, to me this image includes a few good points.

It is shot handheld (!) at 1200mm (600mm f4L IS II w. 2xIII extender), ISO25600 and I could use all focusing points, which was very important for my purchase decision. I have not done any AFMA  (1DX II not supported by FoCal yet) and I believe I have a couple of clicks adjustment need.

This is just a 30 seconds edit, where I gave it a Luminance NR of 25 and a flat +10 in saturation.

ISO 25,000 - from a person who grew up thinking ISO 400 film was really pushing things it is all getting rather silly  :P . Nice, but silly.....
What was the shutter speed (4 stops IS would suggest in the region of 1/100) ?

The shutter speed is actually 1/2000s. I wanted to push ISO to 25600. But I can assure you that handholding at 1200mm and actually find the duck in the viewer is quite difficult, at least to me.

Here is another boring bird, a house sparrow, shot at 1/1250s, f/6.3, ISO1600 @840mm, still handheld. No editing, just the raw image exported with default LR values. I believe I can live happily with this camera :)

It is of course obligatory to post an image of The Local Lion in a thread like this. He has been my test model for the past 16 years. As you can clearly see, he is really looking forward to this :)

Similar shot as the one I posted on the thread about upgrade plans.

1DXII, 600II, 1/640, f/11, ISO 2500.  The squirrel is about 5 meters (5.5 yards) away from me.

I just put the raw file in adobe raw, reduced the highlights a tiny bit and converted it in Photoshop CC to a jpg. No noise reduction and no sharpening done.

I'd like to see what this looks like with NO noise reduction.  Mario's Squirrel at ISO 2500 showed a considerable amount of chroma noise.  I may need to wait for mine to arrive in a couple of days before I can see objective comparisons. Admittedly, I'll be comparing to the 5D2, but I may invest the time to do a thorough characterization of the camera's performance.

yavuz, I am glad my poor mallard shot helped :)

JMZawodny, I was going to do a set of comparison shots with the 1DX. However, yesterday a guy called after having seen my post here and asked if my 1DX was for sale. An hour later he was at the door and that was that.

I am currently on travel, but I'll try to remember to post some high ISO shots, unedited when I get home. What I have seen from the AF system, dynamic range and noise, so far, looks very promising. I may even try the 4k video functionality :)

...  Mario's Squirrel at ISO 2500 showed a considerable amount of chroma noise ...

When I open the raw file in adobe raw, the color noise reduction slider is by default set at 25 (color 25, color detail 50, color smoothness 50) and then the chroma noise is gone.  For the picture above, I set the color noise reduction at zero.  Luminance noise reduction is at zero by default.

Below is the picture again, but with the color noise reduction slider at its default values (25,50,50).

Very nice, beautifully soft background. See virtually no noise...

Very nice photos in this thread Eldar, liked the Local Lion and the duck.  Here is an iso 51200 shot of a cheetah at 1/60sec at f5.6, handheld with EF 100-400L f4.5-5.6 IS ii and 1DX 2. Taken handheld. long after sunset and 1/60 not enough to properly stop the cheetah's breathing motion. Processed in Adobe Camera Raw with no noise reduction apart from amount of 25 in Colour noise panel. image downsized to 2000 pixels wide. No NR on background just for illustrative purposes.  The very low level of ambient light and the lack of contrast in the scene due to the general gloom make for harder photographic conditions than shooting at higher iso in brighter ambient light. I just took this image and posted for illustrative purposes,  I would not use any images at this iso level.

Another one with the 1DX Mark 2, African elephant, Okavango Delta, EF 100-400L IS ii, handheld. 1/125sec at f5.6, iso 4000. Only a touch of Adobe Camera Raw noise reduction applied (Amount 41) via the Adjust brush to the elephants eye. Image processed in ACR, brightened, sharpened and some clarity added..Initial crop of 6 mp from 20mp original, and resized to 2000 pixels wide for this thread.  This camera performs fantastically between iso 800 and iso 6400...

Here is a link to a RAW file for those who want to assess it themselves.  I gotta tell you, I really enjoyed working with this camera and these files last PM. Noticeable improvement in AF success - almost no misses last PM c/w 5-10% miss rate I usually suffer with the 1Dx (which was never bad, but just occasional) and the few extra FPS really gives more choices with action photography - though I did end up shooting ~ 700 frames instead of my usual 400-500 per match.  That may have been me experimenting a little but definitely more FPS = more shots to review post-event. Though the CFast 2.0 card import time was actually less than usual, even though 200-300 more shots!
As far as processing, I forgot to make a unique camera color profile with my Spyder color checker, but I think LR CC handled these files very well, I am pushing the shadows less, using a little less NR and the extra 10% MPs did help with cropping/maintain resolution.
I did a few Live View 16 fps bursts- insane!, However, w/o a tripod, I found it awkward to hold/frame the shots, and I need to re-read the live view focusing technique, as I am not sure the best way to select / follow focus with the DPAF touch screen.
