Looking for FF prime lens for video that has IS and STM
« on: December 04, 2017, 11:47:14 AM »
I'm looking for a lens that has these qualities:

  • Prime Lens
  • Wide aperture
  • Full-frame
  • Image stabilization
  • STM (for silent focusing while using Canon's DPAF during video)

Is there any Canon lens that has all of these qualities? It seems that the only other way to avoid the audible lens focusing is to use an external mic, which seems clunky when doing video on-the-fly. TIA!

nope :)

you can have maximum 4 of those requirements at once
Canon M5|Canon EF-M 15-45mm| Canon EF-M 11-22mm|Canon 15-85mm|Canon 55-250mm IS STM|Canon 40mm STM|Samyang 85mm f/1.4|Meike 35mm f/1.7| Samyang 14mm f/2.8

Fortunately Canon full frame primes don't have STM since it's a big stepback from USM. In my opinion a fix aperture zoom is better for video even though it's somewhat darker. Regarding to what you would like to shoot either a 24-70 or a 70-200 will do. Both available with f/2.8 but the Canon 24-70 does not have IS. Also remember that you need a fast camera as well with higher fps.

You can't have wide aperture and STM, because STM motors (including nano USM) are used in lower-priced lenses that don't have super wide apertures, with the exception of 50mm/1.8.  And that doesn't get you anywhere because it doesn't have IS, and it isn't very quiet.

What you really want to achieve the nearly soundless, awesomely fast continuous focusing for video is the nano USM version of STM -- but that's only available in two lenses, EFS 18-135 and EF 70-300.

To fulfill your needs, in my opinion, EF 24-70 f/4 IS is as quiet as any STM lens EXCEPT for 18-135 and is very fast (and obviously, has IS).  If it must be a prime, there is always the 85/1.4.  It's very quiet.  Maybe give them a try in a camera shop.

Or go crop and get an 80D and 18-135, which is a fantastic video combo.  Yes, yes, it's not a prime, but why does it have to be a prime, especially for video?

As SkynetTX put it though, thank god there are no STM primes (other than 50mm).  Newer generation ring USM is so much better.

The closest of that would be the Tamron 35, 45 ,85mm F1.8 VC, which has quiet focus.

The 24-70 f/4L IS is not really quiet and the continuous AF is not exactly smooth. At least not if you compare it to the 18-55 STM. I think the 24-105 STM might be the only silent FF lens. But I have not checked that yet (even though I'm also looking for a silent lens for video on FF).
5D4, 70D+BG E14, EF 24-70 f/4L IS, EF 16-35 f/4L IS, EF-S 17-55, EF-S 10-22, EF 100 f/2.8L IS macro, EF 70-200 f/4L IS, EF 100-400 L IS II, 2x 600EX-RT, 430EX III-RT

Sounds like you need to switch to a Panasonic or Sony system, 'cause those can do everything you ask for. (Though the Panasonics will need 'speedbooster' adapters.)

STM lenses don't have both wider apertures and IS. It's one or the other. As a general rule, very few non-STM lenses have both wide apertures and IS, too. The good news is that STM doesn't make much of a difference—it can be slightly smoother, but it's also slightly noisier and when it does go wrong it ends up being jerkier than the more consistent USM focusing—so you can just focus on the few prime lenses with IS and wide apertures. Those are the 35mm f/2 IS, 24mm and 28mm f/2.8 IS, 85mm f/1.4 IS, 100mm f/2.8 IS, and 200mm f/2 IS.

The 24-105 STM is certainly quieter than most, and at the longer end you'll get enough perspective compression that the aperture won't really matter, if the look of the image is all you're going for. If you need wide apertures for actual light gathering, then you're out of luck really. And, while it is indeed "quieter", it's not silent, and especially if you need to rack focus through its full range, the built-in camera mic will hear it.

A small shotgun mic in the camera's hotshoe can mitigate noise made by any lens, weighs very little, and shouldn't get in the way. If video without an entirely separate audio recorder is important to you, look into adding a small shotgun mic. If video is really important to you then you owe it to yourself and your viewers to get a separate audio recording solution, because nothing in the SLR world is entirely silent. Again, other camera systems may suit you better, given your requirements.

You can get what you want with video gear (not with the same acronyms but the same features) Once again, people always looking for the ideal video setup on a stills based format. Visit a news station and see if they shoot the show with a dslr.
