Spots on 5D2 RAW files?
« on: March 26, 2012, 10:03:42 AM »
Wondering if anyone knows what would cause the spotting in the attached images. This is a RAW conversion with no adjustments other than to open in Ps and save as a small JPEG. I've shown the full image as well as a 100% crop of the affected area.

EXIF:

5D2
TS-E 24L II
B+W 82mm 010 UV Haze
RAW
ISO 100
f/16
2.5 sec

These spots only showed up on these exposures of the bridge (same spots on multiple exposures). Not apparent on other shots I've taken. No dust on anything.

All brand new gear. Only 150 snaps so far on the 5D2. Could the filter be causing this?

UPDATE:

Some quick test shots with a different lens (24-105) show that the spotting only occurs at small apertures and longer exposures.

See f/4, f/16, f/22 comparisons. Definitely an issue on the 5D2 end...

Any ideas?

@AnselA: You're probably right about the aliens.

@pixeljunky: What was your solution with the Pentax? Did you send it back?

Try shooting with small aperture against a bright blue sky. Does it show up?

If so, it's probably something on / to do with the sensor. If there is dust on a sensor, then that shows up as dark/black spots, and also only at narrow apertures.

Your spots seem to be more see-through and may be caused by some liquid that dripped on the sensor (internal lubricant?). Set the camera to manual clean (have it lock up the mirror) and see if you can spot anything suspicious on the sensor surface. If there is something, you might want to clean your sensor or have it cleaned.

Could be some kind of fungus growth on the sensor surface due to long storage? Return the camera for a sensor cleaning or exchange.

I agree with Tijn, those marks look like liquid (lubricant from the shutter?) sprayed onto the sensor. These would be very small and hard to see. Worth trying a clean. The diffraction spotting is more evident with small apertures and bright plain backgrounds.
The area to look at is reversed on the sensor to the picture, ie if you held the camera portrait style with the shutter release uppermost for your bridge pic, then the spots would be near the shutter release side, if that makes sense!

Probably not what you want to hear, but i would send it to Canon.  Looks like lubricant got sprayed onto the sensor.

If Canon claim that the dirty sensor is not covered by warranty, fight them (nicely) and I think they will clean it for you.

Or perhaps you can return the Camera to the store for a replacement if you don't want to send it to Canon.

Thanks for the input, everyone...

Probably easiest to just send it back!
