Kite could kill young pheasant but it's a low probability. They go after smaller pray and most of all they are scavengers...

I don't think I will ever stop fantasizing about a longer tele, but the portability of the RF100-400 is hard to beat.

400mm works well with BIF. Narrower fov than from 400-500mm gets more difficult.

Yeah, I think I have made the right decision with the R10+RF100-400 combination for the kind of birding I do.
Longer focal lengths would also be no good if I had to creep closer to shoot songbirds in the underbrush anyway.

To my surprise, I got a shot yesterday with the 2xTC on the RF 200-800mm at 1600mm on the R5! Nothing special, just a Black-headed Gull, but it shows it can work for birds in the far distance.

Along those lines, a rare visitor of a Little Gull was rapidly fishing a fair distance away, yesterday, and I was surprised that the RF 200-800mm could latch on to it and keep focus. The bird in the single shots are only about 800 px long, and the git only 5-600mm.

Not everyone likes them but I find them a neat way of showing action in a small sized file. You can see here from the waves coming into focus that the bird is diving. Thanks Click.

I have toyed with the idea of buying a used 400mm f/4 DO II as their prices are plunging, but my 100-500mm is sharper at 500mm than the 2 DO IIs I have bought and sold, and the zoom is so much more versatile that I would bring out the prime on only very rare occasions, if ever, for dim light. The RF 100-800mm at f/9 is at least as sharp as the DO II at 800mm with the 2xTC and lighter.
