here are a couple of 100% crops of the 450mm and 600mm

Forgive me for asking, but is it just me or is there a substantial IQ loss between those two images? The 600mm seems very soft.

Thanks for sharing and enjoy the xiao long bao while you are in Shanghai!

it is, I think there is a bit of camera shake in the 600mm image as i was trying to hang out of the 12th storey window as much as possible with the camera and lens and was not using a strap
this is the reason i posted the crops not sure how much is due to the lens and how much of the loss is due to the operator :p
all the BIF shots i posted before are 600mm too but dont seem as soft so i think its more operator than lens

Thanks. Be careful hanging out of those windows, especially when holding a camera and no strap! We don't want any flyingwombats! :D

BH Photo is still listing this as a pre-order, and it isn't even on Amazon (it always sends me to the -500mm). Where did you guys buy yours, and how long did you wait? I'm ready to pull the trigger.

Also, what size quick release plates are you using?

Thanks!

i'm using a P120

Thanks. Looks like a wimberley p-30 will do the trick too. Ordered. Hope it comes soon.... ;)

Some shoots taken with this nice lens. All with 5d MKIII.

North sea sunset, f16 1/60 iso 400, hand held 600mm. (and cropped)

f7,1 1/1250 iso 400, 375mm

f8 1/500 iso 100, 200mm

I'm quite happy with the lens, and the autofocus also woks with a Sigma 1,4 teleconverter.

Those are some wonderful photos. This focus length is tempting. I am still going in circles....

Know the feeling about circles :)
Had the sigma 150-500mm, but was not happy with it.
It will be interesting to see how it performs compared to the new sigma’s. But the sigma sport will be too heavy for me, since I cannot always use a tripod. (Take a lot of photos from a ship).
But hope you find the “right one” for your use.

I am very curious about the Sigma Sports performance (IQ en AF speed) compared to the Tamron and the Sigma Contemporary version. Though at Sigmabenelux I did not see the last one listed for Canon - just for Nikon. Maybe just a matter of time.
Otherwise I may be tempted to go for the 7DMKII + Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 Sports (a whole other investment!!)

Some hand-helds with a 6D. The first has some sharpening in post, but the 2nd and 3rd are un-sharpened. The first and third are somewhere between 50 and 100% crop.

IS is pretty good, because this sucker is LONG at 600mm. I ended up ordering a 400L while waiting for the Tamron to be delivered, and I think I'm going to sell the 400L and keep the Tamron.
