Canon Rumors

Jog Wheel
One source swears the new Rebel will get a jog wheel.

Bounce Flash
A few emails have come in claiming the new Rebel will have a bounce flash on top. Wishful thinking? It appeared previously for a Nikon D5000 rumor. I don’t see Canon busting out a radical departure in the world of camera top flashes.

Articulating Screen
Everyone I ask says not to expect one on the new Rebel. They’d rather the large 3″ VGA screen.

I think it’d be a great idea to add one. A lot of people are pretty passionate about having one. Perhaps remove it and movie mode on the Rebel XS successor.

GMOS
The next “G” camera will be CMOS sensor based.

“You will see an announcement before you think.”

That’s it for now.

  • An articulating screen (or even a swivel screen) would be very useful for movie mode. I think we’ll see it. And a 50 1.4 IS.

  • yes
that would make me finally buy a point and shoot again (first time in ten years) if they would give that to us…
A nice clean cmos at the size of at least a 4/3rds sensor…

  • Articulating screen? EVERY other major manufacturer has an articulating screen. I thought Canon was a leader.

  • As a postential buyer of 500D I would like to see 3″ VGA LCD instead of articulate LCD which I have used for quite a long time on my old powershot A80, it is good but it is not that good.

After all, it is always a dilemma…..

  • That large sensor will not happen in a G-cam. They will not want to make the camera much larger than the G10, or decrease its zoom-range.

  • agree, and you can have a look over at cameralabs where their comparison shows the sx1 has slightly worse IQ than the sx10.

I’ve never understood why canon seems to be unable to get HD from their ccd-sensors…

  • I’d gladly take a bigger cleaner sensor with a 24 – 85 or there abouts zoom…
continue with that 2x extender to make it 160ish and it’s a good compromise…

  • why do you assume that the articulate screen and the 3″ VGA couldn’t be the same?
Comparing the swivel screen on your “old powershot” to a new one doesn’t quite make sense

  • IT should be easy to swivel the flash up for bouncing while shooting landscape but what about portrait shooting? The flash “head” would be too small for the camera or the shooter’s hand or finger not to cast a shadow… It would have to come out of the camera a few inches not to interfere… Try using a long lens, with or without a hood and a 580EX in landscape mode…

  • I thought we were talking SLR cameras here.

And Canon has lots of non-SLR cameras with articulated screens.

  • Care to post an example of SLR camera with articulated screen made by one of those “other major manufacturers” please?

  • Heh, I just wanted to make you say Panasonic so I can point out you are confused as to what SLR means ;)

  • To some extent you are correct, then we can check out Panasonic’s G1, the addition of 3″ Swivel LCD forced many components in the rear control panel to the right and leaved small spaces for comfortable configuration.

Besides, The joint of swivel LCD broke the body intergrity.

There is always pros and cons about a design, it is always about compromise.

I have had enough experience to explore the possibilities brought by a swivel LCD ( I was not comparing the size since at you said there are almost disparate). And at the end of the day when I started using G10 I appreciate a non-swivel design, rather than the swivel screen I had been using.

Nevertheless, it is not a killing factor of me and I am open to see any of these designs on 500D.

  • You got me. I missed a few too. It’s got an EVF, that’s good enough for my planet at least.

  • You have to know the secret handshake… oh, you don’t know the secret handshake? The guys at NikonRumors got it wrong… at least the timing. I still thinkt he D5000 is coming and it’ll have a 2.7″ articulating screen, Full HD, a bottle opener, MP3 player, and back scratcher.

  • why must you play with our feeble minds? my thinking is, why would canon not have released a “groundbreaking new xxD series camera” a couple of weeks ago at PMA when the entire body of photography journalism was there? i get the feeling that these ‘sources’ are simply randoms who email in with wishes.

we’re getting a digicam and possibly a lens (new 50mm without IS, or modernized 35mm 2.0 w/ USM to combat nikon’s recent release?).

  • they forgot about the PMA and decided to launch it at PIE instead ;)

actually I’m thinking CR-guy just makes stuff up to maintain his audience in a state of rabid frothing anticipation…

  • When I had articulated screen on my compact digicam long ago, I hardly used it even though I CRAVED for it when I did not have it. I am not certain how many people are like me years ago. ;)

  • Hi folks,

maybe jimmypants is right and there are no new DSLRs around!

Last year Canon announced a product line with innovative technologies for the professional print market on 25 March 2008. Why not this year?

    Same date! Same product range????

  • Hi,
Sry i am new in the camera / dslr business. Could someone post a website where i could read up on the technical features a dslr has or could someone please explain what a “articulating screen” is.
    Thx

  • Jog Wheel on a xxxD? Maybe with a larger body? A “half stop” between the xxxD/xxxxD and the xxD series? Yummy…

    j.

  • I don’t need an 3″ LCD on a 500D if it’s as small as the 450D. A signal to noise ratio like the 50D is much more importand. A second drive for the shutter would be fine to have a real silent mode in conjunction with live view.

Please reuse the Battery-Pack of the 450D or 5Dmkii _and_ let us fill the pack via USB. Why the litium cell has no USB connection to get the power? The European Community is strong asking cell phone manufacturers to migrate to a standard power connection for charging the battary pack with a deadline of 2011 or so. Canon, Nikon and he others should join as well. This would be fine for the environment and convenient for the customers.

  • Because the power (product of volts and amperage) contained within a Camera battery is much, much higher than a cell phone. USB has a very limited ability to give charge to the device it is connected to, and USB cables have significantly high internal resistances than do traditional cables that connect chargers like the LP-E4 to a wall outlet, of course even less resistance is there if the charger simply plugs directly into the wall outlet, like the chargers for the NB -2LH, BP-511(A), and LP-E6, etc… Due to the higher internal resistance of running the power to charge a battery through a USB, assuming that USB has enough voltage potential to charge a Camera Battery at all, (I very very seriously doubt it is capable of feeding the LP-E4 the 11.1 volts it needs) It would take several times the amount of time to charge as a conventional charge would. The average customer is not going to have a problem with a dedicated charger, but might if they attach it via USB to their computer, and the battery drains the power out of that port and its partner, making it unusable (2 USB’s share an attachment to the motherboard) and taking 12 hours to charge. What’s more, since the USB and computer have so much internal resistance the amount of wasted power would be quite high considering the size of the application, and thus be worse for the environment. I understand the environmental concerns of leaving charger plugged directly into the wall at all times, as that consumes power without accomplishing anything. For this reason, and the reason of safety, I keep my chargers plugged into a power strip and turn it off when I’m not using it and I encourage others to do the same. USB is not a viable solution for charging SLR camera batteries.

  • Swivel screen like on the older Canon Powershot G1-G5. A good feature, and very versitile, would like one on a Canon, but won’t switch to another if they have one…

  • You mean the camera that it is rumoured will be announced next week and that may not actually exist? Probably by June.

  • Most modern camcorders have an articulating screen. You know, the LCD panel that flips out and twists around. You can also flip them back with the screen facing the camera body, so the screen is easy to protect.

  • swivel screen is a turn off in my world…

im about to get a rebel for my gf and i would love it to have bounce flash and jog wheel… but if it has swivel screen i will not buy it

  • Jog wheel would be brilliant.

Canon definitely own the competition in this regard. It’s a fantasticly useful tool.
