Press Release:

Canon has announced that it has produced over 10 million consumer D-SLRs (digital single-lens-reflex) worldwide since the launch of the EOS 300D in 2003. Canon’s D-SLR products have achieved consecutive no.1 rankings in GfK’s consumer hitlist since 2004. Starting with the Canon EOS 300D, the market-leading spot was passed to the 350D in 2005, the EOS 400D in 2006 and the EOS 450D in 2008 (GfK WEU14 Jan~Dec for each respective year) and it is hoped the trend will continue following the recent release of the EOS 500D.

“Canon remains at the forefront of this consumer market growth with a market share of 40 per cent in Europe (GfK WEU14 Jan~Dec 2008) which we account for our commitment to consumer demand and our passion for high-quality image,” said Rainer Fuehres, Head of Canon Consumer Imaging (CCI), Canon Europe. “We hope that the release of the EOS 500D will further strengthen our market position this year.”

The increasing volume of consumer-orientated D-SLR models on the market has also driven an increase the volume of lens sales. Canon’s EF lens portfolio is now the world’s most extensive and popular range of D-SLR lenses, with over 60 models and 40 million sales worldwide.

Canon recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of Canon SLR (single lens reflex) cameras, having launched the Canon Flex in May 1959. Over 50 million Canon SLRs have been sold worldwide and Canon SLR cameras are accepted as the benchmark standard for amateur and professional photography.

  • Yep, too bad they’ve ceded the market leadership to Nikon and are in the “me too” business mode relying on their previous good name (and installed lens base).

  • Uh, right.

Well for everyone who has wondered, 10M cameras are a sound answer to why Canon isn’t racing to update the 1 or 5 series faster.

  • ten million and one shortly. as much as i’d love to pick up a D90 today, the 500D will be the baby that takes my money. i blame my bag of canon lenses for that.

  • I sincerely thank every early adopters who decide to buy a just-released Canon camera, and report the bugs and crippled features to the rest of us.

  • With what’s going on in the world wide economy, that’s the smartest thing to do for Canon. They can produce APS-C faster than APS-C of FF, this is much cheaper and they’ll be sure they are gonna sell a lot :)

Then this is perfect for canon cause they don’t really have to produce expensive sensor, expensive cameras, and that’s the perfect for the customers because it’s cheaper.

  • So where’s the cashback promotion coming along the 10 million DSLR celebration?

  • I wonder for how long Canon will remain number 1.

If they proceed making models that are hardly an improvement over the previous version and if they keep kripling camera’s to spare the higher model number I think it will be done with Canon any time soon.

Nikon is comming up fast and will for sure surpass Canon if Canon won’t change its marketing and product design.

  • actually canon lost majority market share in november. lot of people went D3, especially those got burned by mkIII AF issues.

  • I’m not aware of Canon Crippling any camera. They offer features for a price. If you pay more, you get more. This is the way it is with all products, from Apple Computers to Zune Players. That doesn’t mean that it cost a lot more to add the features, its just thw world wide business model.

Nikon does the same, they put the best features in their more expensive products.

  • Well, Canon could also ONLY offer a USD8,000-quality camera at low quantities, but that would leave most of us without a dslr, yes?

  • Lost market share because of D3??? How many D3/D700/D300 do you think Nikon sold compared to their D40/D60/D90?

  • “I’m not aware of Canon Crippling any camera. They offer features for a price.”
Thanks for joining our debate, Ed of the marketing dept.

Canon has been crippling features since at least the 300D : you could hack the firmware to enable crippled features. And then there was the 40D video capture. And then they are so many crippled features I can list them all, just look at the specs.

  • Seriously what is it with all the Canon bashing? This is a Canon rumor site, i.e. for people who are interested in their products.

For everyone who finds Canon lacking, just sell off all your Canon stuff and go to the Nikon camp. They have boards to complain on too.

  • -1.
I own all sort of film and digital cameras from Arax to Zenza, so I can say whatever I want (as long as the moderator agree me to…). Canon has been doing good things ™, but not that much recently.

  • now days its pretty simple on how to buy a product.

mostly its “you get what you pay” tagline

    pay less you get less

    pay more you get more

    go figure =)
