  • Its curious that they skipped a revision. I know this is commonplace with Canon firmware updates that they are non-sequential. Even so, I’m always curious why. :)

Who knows, maybe they were working on some other enhancement or feature that wasn’t ready for this “quick fix”.

  • I got the message about this from Canon earlier on Twitter, but their link doesn’t work. Luckily, Canon Rumors has a
link to the actual page. It’s just a pity my Canon 1D Mark IV is broken … I’d be curious to see if anyone else has had problems with theirs.

  • I’d say this has to do with how software developers code their work.

For example go 0.0.1 up for every small change – so two little changes would be 0.0.2 up.

In the end the numbering is, to the external user, completely arbitrary except that larger numbers = newer version.

  • Not exactly. Usually a bunch of changes will be packaged into one release which gets one version number.

Version numbers are only relevant for identifying releases that get out of the development environment, so my guess is that there was a 1.0.5, which was released either for testing inside Canon, or to a limited external group. A problem was found in that (or they decided to bundle additional fixes), and a second version (1.0.6) was released. That second update passed all the quality checks, and is now being released.

Canon’s comment that “there is no Firmware Version 1.0.5.” should probably be read as “don’t bother wondering if you missed 1.0.5 — if you aren’t one of the few who’s already got it, you won’t be seeing it.”

  • Installed tonight, no problems. No idea why I installed, I haven’t noticed any problems! But heck it’s done now.

  • Recieved my Mark IV yesterday with firmware 1.0.6 installed. Guess that explains the delay. Also, as far as High ISO goes – It performs flawlessly to 8000, and after that NR and down sampling make it work just fine to 10000. BOOM!

  • I was studying something else about this on another blog. Interesting. Your position on it is diametrically contradicted to what I read originally. I am still contemplating over the opposite points of view, but I’m leaning to a great extent toward yours. And regardless, that’s what is so great about modern democracy and the marketplace of ideas on-line.
