Preliminary!
Tough crowd!

Canon is not letting anyone do anything with the camera. Samples and everything are being pulled down all over the web.

Part of why I posted this is because of this iron fist Canon has on testers. If the camera turns out trouble free, then we'll all be happy.

Keep checking back to his site to see the indepth review of the camera. I was just pointing out a guy that has done some good write ups in the past and is a good contributor to Canon Rumors.

Even Mr. Laforet isn't allowed to release much.

First Impressions
A new preview/review is up for the 1D Mark IV. This is very preliminary. I'm sure the final review will be coming closer to the time of release.

  • What’s the point of this review? How can you review a camera without looking at images or video? It’s like writing a preliminary restaurant review by just looking at the food.

Still waiting for a real review.

  • I was about to say the same thing, what good is giving someone a camera to test, and then saying you can’t look at the results?

Am I the only one getting the impression canon got a bit tight lipped about the camera’s image quality as soon as comparisons between it and the d3s came up?

Not that I’m attacking canon, just wondering how much they plan to improve/change from prototype to production.

  • I’m wondering if Canon is considering making some changes before the actual release. Perhaps they felt pushed to announce it early than they wanted because of Nikon’s announcement. Hopefully they want to add a couple features.

  • It seems a bit dumb to write a first impression review based only on what he has seen on the 3″LCD screen. How difficult would it have been to check a few images first on a computer monitor before writing a review like this? Sure, on the LCD screen of my 7D the ISO 6400 images look great too! But viewing 100% on my computer monitor it really isn’t all that great.

Therefore, I feel that this review is worthless and does not add anything new or useful to the existing reviews / previews.

  • I’ve got one on order, I don’t expect them to ship until after Christmas. however, I have no intention of buying one if there are no reviews and images to view. Something is strange here, it sounds like the sensor is still under development and, I hope the final one will be better yet.

  • What kinda BS is this???
This is not a review or a preview. Just a waste of
    time and effort.
That’s why people go to dpreview to see the real thing. The others are just wannabes
i own a 1d3 and would only use 1’s and it is not a
super user friendly camera. Have u tried using a Nikon D3? It’s useless freindly!
This bozo is compring a 7D to the 1D.
If u want a button for
    everything, get a powershot
I already preordered the 1d4. I don’t need to read a review since at this point in time there is no better option
to upgrade from a 1d3, Definitely not a 7D, and since I hate full frame, this is
going to be my next camera no matter the reviews

  • Don’t be so hard on this reviewer, it’s not his fault Canon were difficult with him. They did the same thing to me with the 7D. I declined their offer.

The condition was that I was not to view anything that I’d printed using their
direct print button, so I deemed any conclusion would not show the camera’s true capabilities.

  • I think this camera will fall back a month at least. I don’t think it is ready. Canon knows there is stink in this release. They’re close to fixing it, but not there yet. As for missing 7D features. This camera was meant to be released in the spring with different styling. It all got rushed.

  • That’s funny because that direct print button is one of the key features that they love so much. I would have never bought a canon slr without one. ;)

I think I might pull out the 7d and just hit that direct print button a few times and smile.

  • I also think that Canon just wanted to keep another option in people’s minds when deciding on the D3s. Hopefully the final Canon product will have the remaining 7D features of extra buttons on movie recording and I would also love to see the electronic level show up as well. My fingers are really crossed that Canon will put out this killer camera and I’m just waiting another month or two before I place my order.

  • >If u want a button for everything, get a powershot

Nice comparison :) Powershots are cheaper so they deserve more buttons…
I find the lack of controls on the 1DmkIV pretty much surprising, I was ready to the “disappointment” of the 1.3 crop (for me only anyway, I’m not criticizing the choice which I understand), but I felt a bit surprised by the unchanged control layout. I think it’s not so bad generally, you can configure a button for the video too, but if there was a single button more for a custom function, or quick menu, what damage could it make?

  • I want to point out that it was good for canon to keep the same existing controls, just adding a few more wouldn’t have broken the system

  • “How difficult would it have been to check a few images first on a computer monitor before writing a review like this?”

Did you actually read his article???

The CF Door on the camera was glued closed! He did not have a cable or drivers to download images from the camera.

That makes it reasonably difficult to view them on a computer!!

He used the magnification on the 3″ screen to blow the image up as much as possible to the point where he could see any noise. Thats about all he could do.

  • I agree. What is canon trying to hide? This sounds a little sketch like maybe they pushed the camera out real fast before it was ready for the masses, and they are afraid there might be some imperfections.

Let’s see some no holds-barred independent reviews.

  • With this much time before release why not tweak as much as u can before releasing pics? Even if it’s firmware tweaks it’s fine with me. You can preorder without putting money down in many places.

  • First, let me say that I have no doubt the new 1d4 is going to be a great camera, far beyond most people’s capabilities.

But let’s face reality…there is only one reason why Canon does not want these independent image samples out there, and that is because the camera was not ready.

If everything was great, Canon would want the images released.

When the 7D was released, the usual suspects were waiting with previews and images. That camera was ready.

I believe, like many on this board, that Canon rushed the release to try to put a damper on the D3s sales. I don’t know why. At this top end of the camera food chain, it’s more a matter of selling upgrades to existing users, not getting new users or switchers. Most of the pro’s who will buy either camera have already committed to Nikon or Canon through the years. They are not going to switch.

  • I’m starting to wonder if its against my own best interests to buy stuff from Canon USA. Its like they hate us, nothing else could explain it. Who else would work so hard to silence their biggest fans and loudest cheerleaders?

  • lol at this comment.

    Yes they are silencing us.

The camera was released last week. It’s not going to be in consumer’s hands until mid late december.

There is more than enough time for them to tweak it as much as they can. I don’t see anything wrong with this strategy. With the laforet situation.

If you remember a similar thing happen to his last movie. But that was partly because he made the movie out of his own accord and Canon eventually bought the rights to it so it took a little time for the transition.

  • I agree that the Laforet situation may be more a matter of them agreeing on a price for the rights to the video.

However, with most new releases of a camera this calibre, it seems to be the norm that if you loan a preproduction model to a photographer, generally they can post images that they take with the camera. The policy with this model just seems odd…as if they rushed its announcement, and then realized something was a bit off, and now are trying to squelch that.

  • I think Canon is trying to keep Preproduction images
from tainting the opinions of buyers before they can get
regular production bodies out the doors to the reviewers.

It seems like all they are letting them do is comment on form & function.

Canon wants this launch to go right, after the Mk3 oops.

but I think they’ve got this launch all wrong, there should have been no restrictions.
There was nothing wrong with Laforet’s video, in fact I think it would help sell the camera.

  • Love this camera! Super cute and fits perfectly in a pocket. The only thing I’ve had trouble with it in the dark pictures. Which I’ve found is hard for any camera. But all in all…..yes so worth the money!!!!
