  • Maybe they’re squeezing more out of the AF system for the 1Ds MkIV and retroactively applying it to the sibling? Might indicate “no major change” for the Mk IV AF system?

  • I haven’t heard complaints, but obviously, some of their photographers have let them know of the issue.

They are pretty sensitive to issues like this, since they now know it can kill sales. I’m glad to hear that they have learned.

The 7d has been out long enough for any problems like this to show up, I never had any, but if people do and document the problem and submit it to Canon, they are sensitive to real issues.

  • Great!! I don’t see AF tracking performance as a major problem on the 1d iv. But if Canon can enhances the AF tracking I would gladly accept it. I hope Canon is also working on better ISO for the 1d iv because the ISO is the weakest part of the 1d iv. I was on the fence for a while about jumping ship to Nikon but overall I’m pretty happy with the 1d iv. To all the people who are going to ask if i own the 1d iv, I don’t. But I am about one week into my two week rental and I have already placed my order with amazon for a 1d iv.

  • And your saying this because you are having problems with the AF tracking performance on the 1D Mark IV?

  • LMAO,,,Canon stating a Problem with their products???? specially regarding AF?.i wonder what colour DOT they are gonna use this time if there is a problem :-)). maybe yellow to keep people moving to the other side of the fence;-).

  • Canon basically updates the internal processing as a matter of good customer service, and yes, market positioning. It’s well understood that customers not only desire, but truly need the cutting edge gear. As new tech & code are developed, a balance is usually obtained for individual market segments by updating recently released equipment. Two to four years is the norm. It’s an approach referred to as “valuable vs. workable”. Several staff are expressly dedicated to rewriting & inserting this code and spend most days ramping up past hardware. Discontinuation dates usually end this cycle. Regardless, the goal is to continually improve the push-pull tracking envelope (farther outward) when sensing subject movement. The algorithms are complicated.

  • Cancel your order while you can! Trust me, jump ship and you will be glad you did. The 1d mark iv is NOT worth 5000, not even 3000 because the 2400 D700 has far better performance than canon’s so called flagship body.

  • I notice how Canon was very particular in their wording, to choose “enhancement” over “fix” or “solution”. And rightly so – I have heard no public outcry of a problem. Its great to see Canon doing this, and we will likely see many revisions to the high-end cameras this time around. The technology is evolving so quickly and product lifecycles are growing shorter – rather than reinvent the hardware, it would make sense to periodically polish the firmware and add new features.

    Just my 2 cents.

  • I really want cross-type sensitivity for f/4 lenses (vertical-line sensitive to f/8) for use with the EF 400mm f/4 DO IS USM and the EF 600mm f/4L IS USM, and centre-point sensitivity to f/5.6 (vertical-line to f/11)…

  • Yeah your right, what was I think!! what a minute, why don’t I just use my wife’s p&s sony that shoots at 12 megapixels, I could save tons of money..

    lol.. all joking aside.

I should trust you when you tell me about a camera that shoots at 5 fps at 12 megapixels? I have that it’s call a 5d mark ii but the megapixels are at 21 and it shoots full hd. Don’t get me wrong the D700 looks like a good general camera, but it’s not what I am looking for.

I shoot nature and wildlife, so I like that the 1d iv can shoot 10 fps at 16 megapixels and I like that also has the 1.3 crop sensor for that little extra reach for wildlife shots.

  • I have been using the Mark IV since January 4th and the AI servo has yielded very good results. I have noticed that when a subject is standing still before continuing their movement left, right, forward or backward, the autofocus points try to hunt for the subject based on its last known trajectory. This only happens when the subject stops for at least 2 seconds and does not move. The easy work around has been to release the shutter and then press halfway again as soon as the subject continues their movement.

If the enhancement is to track the subject while their movement is paused or slight, it will make a very good AI system even better for my needs.

  • That shows that you don’t understand the technology behind it. F/4 up to f/8 are supported. The fact that they are f/2.8 sensitive does not mean that you have to use only f/2.8 lenses in order for it to operate accurately.

By the way, I am a mk-IV owner and have shot sports and (moving) wildlife with it. The results are 300% better (hit / miss ratio) than my previous mk-III

From 100 shots, on average 65% is completely in focus, 15% is “acceptable” in focus, 10% is “still usable” in focus and 10% is totally unusable.

With my previous mk-III, on average 25% was completely in focus, 15% was “acceptable” in focus, 15% was “still usable” in focus, and 45% was totally unusable.

So let’s not speak of “focus problems” here.

  • It’s like this.

Nikon is for photographers who know what they want and want equipment that can deliver the goods.

Canon is for people that are clueless and think that megapixels mean everything where as they don’t.

It’s great the 5D Mark II has 21 megapixels, err but the cameras IQ is not in the same ballpark as the D700.

I’m sorry to tell you in this day and age all you really need is a 12mp camera that can take really high quality photos with minimal noise. I can print my D3s pictures at 32″x48″ and they are absurdy sharp at that size. Strange how that works from a 12 megapixel camera.

Granted then again you can’t expect much from that 5D Mark II. I mean it’s autofocus system is only 6 years old now.

  • Let me make some corrections, first of all an even comparison is D3s vs 1d mk iv but since the D3s is so much better it’s not even fair to compare. So i’ll use the $2400 D700. It actually shoots at 8fps with the battery grip, and can give you a battery life 3 x as long as the 1d mark iv. The 5d mark ii AF system is so so terrible compared to the 51 point AF system of D700, i have found each and every one of the 51 points alone to be more accurate than the center AF point of 5d mark ii. The d700 has better high iso performance than both 5d mark ii and 1d mark iv. The HD video thing i’ll give to canon, but I am speaking from just a photographer’s perspective.

You can get DX mode in d700 which will give you 1.5 x crop mode. In the D3s you can have full frame, 1.2x, and 1.5x with 11fps. The 16 megapixels don’t mean much on a 1.3x sensor, the 12 mp on nikon’s are on a FF sensor. If you look at both photos at actual size the Nikon’s photos will be far sharper and more detailed, and you will be able to enlarge them to the 16Mp sized photo and it will still look better.

I have a 5d mark ii and d700 sitting right next to me. People need to realize that canon is not the company for dslrs, for everything else they’re great. But CURRENTLY they are not.

  • yeah, like what they are doing with the 5D MK II. i hope the next firmware for MK IV is about High ISO. They can enhance the “in camera” NR thru firmware. i am not hoping to match it with D3s, just to match it with 5D MK II.

  • am i forgetting something? or your just a funboy that doesn’t know what’s your taking about? MP? canon has a max 21MP, while Nikon/Sony has 24MP. If Sony HAS a better high MP sensor i bet nikon will use it. Nikon only makes GLASSES, Not SENSORS.

  • Frankly, excepting the AF and dynamic range, the 5D Mark 2 outperforms the D700. The reason for that is that when pictures are resized and cleaned-up, the 5D Mark 2 at high ISO retains the same level of detail as the D700 at the same level of noise, but at low ISO, the 5D Mark 2 has more resolution.

The 1D Mark 4 issue is pretty unfortunate, however, since it looks as though Canon’s 3 stops behind Nikon without resolution correction and 2 stops behind Nikon after resolution correction. The 1Ds Mark 4, if reports are correct, should push it to 1 stop behind Nikon post-resolution correction.

It looks as though it’ll be a softer version of the 1d3/1ds3 issue, where the Canon flagships were completely inferior to its Nikon counterparts and it took the 5D mark 2 is clean up the disparity.

  • The DX mode is not that much of an improvement over FX mode, except that it crops your sensor to ~45% of its pixels. The key advantages are that it allows you to use crop-oriented lenses on your Nikons without having to bother with post-processing and that it saves on file-size for crop pictures.

Canon, on the other hand, won’t let you use EF-S lenses on your full-frame bodies without an extender attachment, which will usually kill infinity focus.

  • “The d700 has better high iso performance than both 5d mark ii and 1d mark iv.”

That is utter bull. The 1D4 matches the D700 at pixel level despite the former’s higher pixel density. The 5D2 exceeds the D700 when the former is downrez to 12 MP.

Also, the 7D supercedes the D300s.

The only truth is that the D3s is better than all of these.

  • I have the 5d mark ii and D700…so I think I know the differences between them. And the 5d 2 does not exceed the D700 even after you downrez the 5d2 photo to match the resolution of the d700. Try this out for yourself, take a photo of a person and do the same with both cameras, downrez the 5d ii file and the D700 will still be half a stop or so better. Since the 5d ii was actually equal to or better than the 1d mk iv, I can say the same for the 1d mk iv.

True the 7d supercedes the d300s in terms of noise, but since it has so many MP the file at 100% is very soft from what I hear. But I cannot comment much more on that since I don’t use crop sensor bodies.

  • No AF problems with my 1D4. I shoot cycling and the new camera replaces my workhorse 1D2N. I’m extremely happy with the results of the first two shoots with it.

  • MM, why don’t you shoot with the mark iv before you make that assumption. Bottom line I am very happy with the 1d mark iv and it fits my need for a wildlife body.

  • Have any of you used this camera yet? Or even shoot things that would challenge the AF of a 50d? Probably not huh.

Firmware updates are pretty normal for any system. Esp when companies build new hardware. The D3 is up to 2.01. seems like the updated a bit too.

BTW just go to any forum that people actually take challenging pictures of BIF or Sports and you’ll see almost all are satisfied with what it is currently.

  • Where did you get the idea it would have more detail? BTW I have a 5d2 and my cousin has a d700 we’ve traded systems a lot to just learn and try them out. Both are great

The d700 is definitely not half a stop better esp if you downrez the 5d II file.

You’ve been drinking a whole lot of koolaid.

  • I’ve used it but mostly for architecture or slow moving or still objects/people. I did a little test on a group of birds, to see how well it tracks and it does seem to lock on reasonably well, IF I do what I’m supposed to, that is. I also took it along to the Muay Thai Gym recently and it performs well during training sessions. There are a few Kickboxing/MMA fights coming up so I will have a much better idea when I can shoot something like that. If I get along to the Greyhound track I will post some pictures from that …

I do have to admit, seeing that headline about the Firmware Update on Canonrumors.com did freak me out!

If that’s what they’re admitting to, what HAVEN’T they found yet? I guess it’s up to the guinea pigs like me to find stuff :/

  • As Canon reworked various “fixes” into the 1D3 to “fix” the AF problem they would apply a coloured dot to the side of the camera’s box. They started with blue, and then various other colours followed as new “fixes” were implemented.

  • Excepting the AF and dynamic range – well those are two pretty big exceptions.

Don’t forget also that the D700 is fully weather sealed, and has higher FPS (5 standard, 8 with grip).

  • Maybe you should listen to the people on here who are using the camera instead of going on hearsay.

  • what is the RUMOR in this ? I guess we find this kind of stuff in times where real rumors are lacking.

  • Learn to read- if you use one of the extenders, you can mount EF-S lenses on EF-only mounts. But, you loose infinity focus. Plus, you have to crop in PP, because part of the sensor doesnt get any light due to the smaller image circle of EF-S lenses.

    But yes, it does work.

  • Could you tell me when and where I can buy a Eos 1D mark IV?
    I’m looking and I can’t find it!!!!

  • Strange, all the canon bashing on a CANON rumors site. I’m going to go over to Nikon rumors and troll for awhile. Feel free to join me.

Canon vastly improves the AF on the IV and some of you guys talk about it like it’s crap.

They vastly increase the ISO over the III, but it’s just noisy as hell? Hmmm.

Grow up. Here’s a news flash for you: as an all-around imaging device, the Canon 1D Mark IV is not “left in the dust” behind the Nikon flagship. It is not equal to it either. It is superior. It has all the trappings of a top-notch professional sports camera (or are those actually black lenses on the sidelines at NFL games?) and it is also breaking new ground in the world of film-making. (If the word Nocturne doesn’t mean anything to, please don’t insult this discussion with a response.)

Canon is supposedly a step and a half behind in ISO performance, big whoop. It is at least 3 steps ahead in video and now right on Nikon’s heels in regards to AF performance.

I’ve shot with this camera for about 10 days now, including two shoots that will account for about 20% of my income this year. From a working professional standpoint, it is universally outstanding. It tracks beautifully. It focuses like a dream in low light, especially with a superfast prime attached. For film-making it is an almost-absolute dream (if you are a videohead, you know what I mean by almost).

All this comparative nit-picking is unnerving, mostly carried out by hobby types, I’m guessing, who don’t actually depend on a device like this to earn a living.

This camera and its semi-crop is a perfect fit for my primes (most of which, incidentally, Nikon doesn’t even MAKE.)

I guess I sound like a real Canon fan boy, eh? I guess I ought to. I switched from Nikon a year ago.

Both systems are great. I choose Canon.

    No regrets.

  • Konichiwa. Prease forgive Engrish. I am Niko-San and am new to digitar srr camera forum. Which Nikon best for picture making a monkey peeing on tree? I need detair and sharp quarity. Does Nikon have big white renses for this? Thank you.

  • Are you kidding me? I report that my 1D Mark IV died and my comment gets removed? How is that helpful to people who are thinking of buying one?

  • Why do people even bother comparing the 5D2 and D700? I have a 5D2, I have had it for 6 months. I am trying to sell it but no one will buy the stupid thing. The Autofocus is horrible, there is no weather sealing, and the “3.9” fps is to slow to take pictures of paint drying.

The ONLY camera Canon offers, that is full frame, has autofocus that works, has weather sealing and is at least 5 fps is the 1Ds Mk3. D700 goes to 8fps with a grip. 5D Mk2 just gets heavier with a grip.

Canon is really letting us down, only people that can’t admit it are fanbois.

  • Nocturne was horrible.

I like Vincent Laforet, and I liked his first look Jamie O Bryan vid, that was f’ing awesome.

Even his latest short vid about the teddybear for that comp was good.

But Nocturne?? Worst piece of video I have ever seen.

  • I can’t wait to get the 1D Mark 1V. I can still remember how exciting it was a mere 10 years ago when Fuji released ProviaF 100 that looked so great pushed 1 stop. I have been using the Mark 2 and Mark 3 and look forward to the Mark 4, but have been unable to get one despite being on 3 waiting lists. I have never even tried anything above ISO 1000 out of curiosity on previous Canon cameras and probably won’t on the Mark 4 either. My biggest question for the Mark 4 will be how accurate the focusing will be with the 800f5.6+1.4x+extension tubes. Meanwhile my slides and first digital photos with the 10D continue to get published in 2010.

  • That shows that you don’t understand the technology behind it.

Criticism taken. I just simply haven’t come within 100ft of any EOS-1D-series dSLR…

  • Amen. No reason to have to denigrate one system to build up the other. Canon and Nikon both produce extraordinary equipment. If people can’t get great images with either one, then the problem is the person behind the camera, not the equipment itself.

And that’s especially true with these pro cams. Most of the people bashing either one have never even held one. Does anyone really believe that they would not be fortunate to have a 1d4? Give me a break. If someone cannot go out and take magnificent pics with the 1d4, I’ll say it again: the problem is with the photographer.

Comparing Canon and Nikon is like comparing Mercedes and BMW…just admit that both are great, and make your choice. People always like this simplistic narrative of good vs bad, and many cannot muster up the strength to make a decision between great and great.

  • I thought Nocturne was great, and I really like the soundtrack.

The only thing I have a problem understanding is the story…but it’s a great video.

  • Given that you need extenders, “loose” infinity focus and are required to crop in PP, I’d say that was a pretty generous definition of “work”.

  • Hello? Did you read the Canon notice on this?:
“Firmware Version 1.0.6 enhances the AF tracking performance of the EOS-1D Mark IV for receding subjects and for subjects that are approaching at a low speed.”

I don’t know about you, and I don’t have your wealth of experience with this camera, but that sounds like sub-optimal performance to me!

  • Wow. Lots of a-holes on this site.

Niko–a troll AND a racist pig. Way to go.

Ken–Nice opinion. Why don’t you try explaining WHY it was so horrible, being how your opinion is in the vast minority. And you can’t sell your awful 5D2? I guess that makes you an idiot since the used ones are selling like hotcakes on ebay and fred miranda and amazon and a dozen other places for 80% of their original retail.

  • I completely agree with you. I guess the problem here is that 98% of the idiotic comments come from useless “wannabe professionals”. I’ll never dream of using ISO over 800, not to mention 100000+. What is the point? Even if you are a photojournalist you will probably never use it, and if you do and you get the picture of one of “those moments” your editor won’t give a f*ck about the noise. So quit whining, get real, and if you can’t live with the noise use a flash… if you know how to.

  • I finally have enough money saved up to upgrade from an xti to a 5d mark II. I was so excited, but after reading all of the negitive things about my dream landscape camera it seems that all I would get is a $2500 piece of crap. I do not know what to buy now.

  • I love my 5dMkII. I’ve played with just about every other camera on the market. Aside from the “terrible AF system,” everything else about the camera is epic. The people who are complaining just don’t know how to use their camera. Go to a Canon store and try it for yourself. I guarantee you’ll instantly fall in love with the 5d.

  • Regarding the 5d & landscape photography – That’s about as good as it gets for the weight, portability & iq.

  • It depends what you’re doing.

I shoot a lot of minor sports where the lighting is god-awful. ISO3200 is standard for me at many venues, and I’d actually appreciate a good ISO6400 so that I could bump my shutter speed.

Just because you don’t have the need for high ISO doesn’t mean that there aren’t legitimate reasons for wanting it.

  • It’s amazing how many pro’s are able to get fantastic images from the 5dii. The 5dii will go down in history as a legendary camera; it will go down as significant for both launching the video dslr revolution, as well as popularizing FF like no other. It’s a bargain for what it does, and again…if someone can’t take good pics with a 5dii, the problem is the person behind the camera.

  • That’s the spirit Joe. You would appreciate a good ISO 6400, but you can work with ISO 3200. Five years ago you could not even dream of ISO 3200. The point is that most of the as*holes here can’t even afford this camera, let alone handle it, and the are just bickering for god knows what reason. I’d really like to here about people who actually already own the camera. I’m still on hold waiting for one.

  • It appears that rational thought has re-entered this thread.

I will gladly welcome the firmware, assuming it is really needed, but I have yet to encounter any problems with slow moving subjects coming or going head-on, or otherwise. Has anyone here actually experienced the issue that is being addressed? As odd as it sounds, I’d kind of like to produce the flaw, if there is one. Perhaps it truly is as advertised, just an enhancement…?

  • The closest thing I’ve experienced to it is the camera’s inability to lock onto an subjectt that might be about to move when it’s standing still. This is in AI Servo Mode with the assist points enabled. It keeps wanting to look for an assist point, depending on what the contrast is like on the subject.

When I got the 7D, I’d thought that the three different Servo Modes would be carried over to the 1 series bodies. The 1D IV only has two autofocus modes, but I assumed that this was due to the increased functionality of its AI Servo Mode. This is obviously not the case. Hopefully the firmware update will fix this.

I have to admit that I’ve been using the camera more as a landscape/architecture camera lately, and am very happy with the results from that use.

  • +100.

    >> Nikon is for photographers who know what they want and want equipment that can deliver the goods.

    >> Canon is for people that are clueless and think that megapixels mean everything where as they don’t.

Absolutely my point of view =)

  • I use ISO 3200-6400 on my Canon 500D with f/2 lenses and a flash. That’s photography in clubs. With those parameters I get shutter speeds around 1/50, sometimes slower, sometimes faster. I can’t switch to an f/2.8 lens, because then I would shoot with 1/25 shutters, which is unacceptable for actively moving/talking people.

It’s not a problem with the photographer, it’s simply my style of shooting, and I don’t want to change it.

I need an FF camera with ISOs 6400-12800 of portrait quality (perhaps 25600 would be used quite often either), because it perfectly suites my needs. I use flash only for drawing with light, not for reducing ISO.

Having said all that, when I collect my money I’ll have to jump to Nikon (D3s/D700s). Too bad Canon simply does not see this part of market.

  • Nikon let’s you use extreme ISOs. Canon doesn’t, even having good technology for it. I feel uncomfortable saving money for a camera that doesn’t suite my needs.

People, who buy 1D MK IV, just don’t need that image quality of D3s, I suppse. It’s simply their type or style of shooting. However, there are many people, that shoot in other way.

It does not matter, how much money does each of us have. My point of view, for example, is based on my photographic experience and needs, and not on money.

  • I doubt this is a major update. There have been plenty of positive field reports on the Mark IV’s autofocus in heavy-duty indoor (low light) sports use.

Would love to have one if my budget allowed.

  • “Canon is for people that are clueless and think that megapixels mean everything where as they don’t.”

Nonsense. I’ve heard a lot of Canon users COMPLAIN about too many megapixels, particularly in the 7D but also in the T1i.

  • How f’ing clever. Let’s mock the inability of non-English speakers to produce every required sound properly – wouldn’t that be a riot! And so original!

  • Making fun of the inability to speak correctly in a second language isn’t racist. Ignorant and rude maybe, but not racist.

  • I’ve had that happen to my comments from time to time as well. Maybe it’s a glitch, maybe we’re being censored. I don’t know, but it seems my negative posts sometimes mysteriously disappear.

  • not true!!!, you can grind out the Mirror (yup the Mirror)a couple of mm and you can easily use efs lenses, google it and you can find lots of info on how to do it.
but unlike on Nikons you´ll have to crop out the vignette in PP. nikon has the patent on in camera crop mode.

    Ron

  • This Statement is whit all respect and my opinion Only

I belive whit the proud of Japanise Ingeniering the Firmware

    is an escuse

the real problem of noise Canon dont whant To admit

I belive the Target Is Iso and electrical Noise and exagerate cromatic noise ( quiet fix )

  • Of course the irony here is that as far as I can see the mk IV is still not shipping in Canada, and we already have a firmware update!

  • Given the history of the mkIII, if canon wanted a QUIET
fix there’s no way the cover story would be a focus improvement.

  • Mine will be in hand on Friday, and I have very little or no interest in what Nikon is doing.

    – Better ISO performance than my 5D (classic)? YES

    – Better focus? YES

    – More resolution? YES

    – Two memory cards? YES

    – Better in poor weather? YES

    – Uses the same lenses? YES (with slightly different FOV)

    – Clean images at ISO 100? DUH

    – Full 1080p video in a usable, well supported format? YES

  • When It comes to auto-focus, just find out which brand Sports Illustrated photographers are using (the majority)…then you’ll find out which camera has the best autofocus. I do tend to see more and more Nikons out there but Canon has the majority for now. We’ll see in the future if Canon can keep it.
