Coming Soon

As usual with hotly anticipated camera releases, delivery times are all over the place.
This is what I have been told.
– Hong Kong has a release date of December 23, 2009
– A Swiss rep has said dealers in Switzerland should expect a couple of cameras to show up before Christmas.
– In Canada I`m told to be prepared for mid January for the first consumer deliveries. Professional customers may receive cameras before that.
– In the States, I hear lots of conflicting stories. All of which say the camera should start shipping after new years.
We usually see cameras trickle out in Asia before most other places. We`ll be keeping a close eye on that.
I`m exciting for the first unboxings!
Thanks W

My dealer (in Arkansas) was on the phone with his Canon rep on Wednesday while I was in the store, and he was assured delivery by the end of the year. I suspect it will be limited. He has 24 on order and 6 sold.
Come on sweet baby Jebus!
A few stores in the UK have said early next week.. Monday – Wednesday
Damm it. This was my xmas present to myself
+1. I was really hoping to be able to shoot at least 3 or 4000 shots during my holiday break! To bad for me. I guess I’ll just need to call in sick for a week or two sometime in January! Yea.
Shooting with it before year end is secondary to my need for the tax write off!
Also need the tax write off. Hong Kong is selling 2 in stock on ebay. They have got to be close.
I sure hope it comes soon. I am going to Africa late February and want to take it. Would be nice to shoot a bit with it prior to leaving!
Can`t wait any longer, I want it now….
let the (consumer) beta testing begin!
if you can opt out of canon, do it now.
Nikon is so far ahead of canon in terms of their D3s vs this camera…
Seems to me you have all the answers. Let’s see your in depth review of a camera not yet available to the public!
Australia: A store I have been dealing with here in Sydney, first said mid November; then mid December. Last Friday they assured me it would be in stock on Tuesday morning (22nd).
Was in Teds in Adelaide city on Saturday. They claimed the three presales they ordered were overdue so they are expecting the first Australian batch next week.
All I need now is five grand and I’ll be all set!
I’ll be a beta tester, and I’ll do it just for you!
Nikon with its 720p really impresses me. Don’t get me wrong, I’d gladly take a D3s, but since I can’t afford both, the 1080p on the Canon is a deciding factor. I have a (blue point) 1D Mark III and 1Ds Mark III now, they’ve never had a single problem. Sold my 5D, now I’m checking for news several times a day. Pre-ordered the 1D Mark IV on Amazon 2 months ago. Since I have the FF 1Ds Mark III, I actually like having crop cameras. I use the Canon 35mm 1.4 L on the FF, the 1D Mark III & IV will use Canon 85mm 1.2 II L and Canon 200mm 2.0 IS L. I can’t wait to shoot full HD with these babies!! A nice complement to stills. I’m going to put an external mic on the Mark IV.
Next thing to wait for: 24-70 Mark II IS L
On agenda: figuring out how to have three 1 bodies attached to body :P
Get a good chiropractor :)
I can’t waiittttttt
wow, what a great informative post. Objective review including charts, testshots, etc, please?
How early did you order? I ordered early the morning of the 20th, and Amazon has been quiet. I hope we hear something soon. I can’t wait to be a public beta tester!
But would you do it for all of us? For we are legion.
Any news about the release date in France?
I can’t wait to buy mine!!!
Just spoke to a major store in sydney and they said its was coming in this avo or tomz morning
I did… I provided objective info, but it said my comment is awaiting moderation.
oh nvm there it is.
Comparing previous models in the Canon vs. Nikon war (what a stupid war it is too as they each have their strengths and weaknesses) But does anyone else have knowledge about Nikon images being less sharp at high ISO compared to equivalent Canon body due to more in body NR in Nikon even when the body is set to low or off on NR? Looking at D3s images on Flickr it kind of looked like the 25600 was low noise, but softer than I would think it should/could look with no NR. This is really a dumb question in a way as we still need to wait a few more weeks for better head to head comparisons(which also is dumb as they’re two different cameras that can each do slightly different and better things than the other). Oh Nikonians are the Cannonites as annoying on the Nikon blogs as you are on the Canon blogs? tsk tsk tsk what a pity.
Not trying to be annoying, just giving the facts. I was a die hard canon user and I kept wanting to find reasons to stick with them but all the facts just pointed me towards nikon.
About the in body NR, the canon bodies have more of that. The 1d mk iv has a smaller sensor and more MP vs the D3s, so that means they’ll have to do more NR to get clean pictures at higher ISOs. Imaging resource has posted photos of the D3S at all ISOs and they don’t seem to lose a lot of detail at all till the very high ISOs.
The 1d MK IV is a GREAT camera…by far the best EOS yet, and in the hands of the right photographer it will make great images.
HOWEVER, I am comparing it to the D3S and that is where it falls short.
you’ve not used the 1D IV, so how do you know it’s that good? It could be complete trash. It could be camera gold.
Go away

Which store is that? I spoke with DDElec
Nah DD’s stock is running late spoke to a city store
I haven’t used it but people who have posted sample images which I provided links for in my post. Also u don’t need to use it to realize things like 4500 shot battery life on d3s is > 1500 on 1d mk iv.
Link no good

October 19th :P Any idea if Amazon ships to who pre-ordered first or is it random ?
To answer my own question, it seems that Amazon does first-come-first-serve on pre-orders. “Date first available on Amazon” was Oct. 19th.
I’m sorry, but this really doesn’t tell me anything. It’s not a real world example. I.e., no one is going to shoot a still life in perfectly decent light at 102,400 ISO. Show me some shots of movement taken in low light (a situation where you might require that high of a setting). Then, tell me about the rest of the gear you used, what noise reduction was applied. Heck, how about what type of JPEG you are posting? If you shot in RAW while doing your tests?
MM, I have to wonder why you are even here? As you have stated, you are a Nikon user now. What’s the point of trolling Canon pages?
Clearly MM wants to save the confused and misguided Canon retches whose eyes have yet to be open to the truth the Nikonians wish to bestow upon us all. It is almost a divine calling you know. I’m actually enjoying my fallen nature as a Canonnite.
I was a canon user up until recently, I like to keep up to date on both canon and nikon products. That’s why I’m here.
I’m not a nikonian haha. Just sharing my experiences and alerting people to some facts. There aren’t many people who have extensively tried both sides of the story, canon and nikon and since I did I’m just sharing what I found. Don’t take my word for it…
I say try the 1d series side by side with the D3 or D3s and make your own conclusions.
So you’re an internet measurebater? Sitting at home peeping at the pixels?
How about this: Get both cameras, test them YOURSELF in YOUR shooting conditions, then decide which one is “best” and return the other one.
If you sit around reading what everyone else says and using that to form your opinion, you become ignorant.
That’s the exact advice I just gave you.. Which is strange because earlier you were pretty sure the 1D IV was the BEST camera from Canon but couldn’t hold it’s own against the D3s.
Why not let MM have his opinion. Let it rest there. We all know it’s just an opinion.
I didn’t use what other people said…i used both d700 and 5d mk ii myself and know the difference between nikons and canons.
Dan, not an opinion when it comes to most of those things…just facts.
things like battery life, high iso performance, and a few others listed are not opinions. Just pure facts, or specs listed by the companies even.
Be logical people, 12mp on a FF will always have less noise than a 16mp on an APS-C…and that’s just physics. Canon has great technology, but even with the help of that technology u cannot beat the fact that each pixel is a lot bigger on nikon.
It should have been full frame.
It isn’t. Don’t buy it.
Any idea on a price?
You are correct. I’ve emailed Amazon CS two times. I ordered early on the 20th. My hope is that I’m on the short list and others have canceled due to all the “I wouldn’t touch it with a 10 foot pole” and “Nikon is better” comments.
You know, if you keep up to the minute on who’s best, you can flip-flop to greener grass ever few months.
Eagle has landed in New Zealand – first 1DMkIV left the shop about an hour ago…
R
really?
I’m #2 on the list here, so it’s not mine – but that makes me first for the next shipment, whenever that is. Seems to be enough for one per (pro) dealer in New Zealand in the first shipment. Won’t be seeing them sitting on the shelf for a while yet!
R
p.s. yeah, I know, new commenter so nobody’s going to believe me – but I did twitter a couple of days ago to say that they’d be coming if that helps…and I just didn’t see the point in commenting earlier, if I had absolutely nothing to add. Now I do. Does that make me more, or less credible?
its an aps-h, not aps-c
i known one agency who tested them , they were a bit disappointed as they where hoping they would be better than the nikon D3 but found they produced more or less the same quality of images
MM it is good that you’ve tried the grass on both sides of the fence and are able to give an more informed opinion regarding Nikon vs. Canon. But To say something is “better” can depend on exactly what you’re examining. Clearly the Nikon will have better low noise, but there are other features to look at. Also, as David mentioned most can’t be jumping ship back and forth every few months or year or two. I’m not really so concerned about if Nikon is better than Canon. What I am VERY interested in is whether Canon has improved everything, or a lot of things in this body compared to earlier Canon bodies. If the noise is not MUCH better in this body and the AI servo WAY better in this body than earlier 1D bodies, THEN I will be very upset. It is all relative. I’m looking at what improvements Canon has made to THEIR line. Not the Nikon vs Canon debate. Thanks for your input. But I’m interested in more than just the noise issue.
haha, it’s a sad indication of the internet when you had to post that to stop people attacking you just for saying what you did.
Sad, but not surprising!
Good! Everyone’s a winner!
its in stock
Where?
digital rev hk
oops yea that’s what I meant, APS-H..1.3x crop instead of 1.6x
Sure thing Ty, i’m sure relative to the current bodies this camera has to be an improvement. But if i’m spending 5k on a camera, I want it to have everything I need w/o any compromises…things like battery life, and having a 1.3x sensor is a compromise. At this point canon doesn’t have a FF camera that’s fast enough for sports yet versatile enough to do low light events such as weddings.
But when comparing it to canon, I’m certain you won’t be disappointed.
I still think you should try a D3S to see if helps make your type of photography easier, and if it does it’s worth the switch from canon to nikon.
I have just received an email from my supplier in Denmark that they will have the first cameraes tommorrow.
I hope to receive my camera before New Year.
Confirmed for Switzerland. Just got a call from my supplier. I will pick up my two bodies this afternoon…nice Xmas-gift…
in japan canon rep said Dec 26 (schedule)
http://cweb.canon.jp/camera/eosd/1dmk4/index.html
who is your supplier? I bought one by conrad, but didn’t hear anything until now…
from the conrad-website (switzerland): delivery by 04.01.2009
should get mine on the december 24th (i’m still in hope…), also baught it in switzerland
I’m canceling my 1DMIV order tomorrow. I don’t know if I can switch over to Nikon though. I’d lose so much on equipment. I guess Canon has me for now. Perhaps I’ll save up a bit more a shot both systems. That is an option. Looks like the D3s is out of stock for awhile though. I’ll just keep enjoying my 5D and wait another two or three years to see if Canon makes a camera that will work for me. FF with megapixels between 14-18 and much better low light capabilities and fast autofocus. Yes, something like Nikon makes:). The 1DMIV just isn’t worth it to me and doesn’t seem to be near good enough in low light situations like I need. Good luck to everyone else that opts for it. I hope it suits them well.
I’ll have to be a Nikonian in heart only for now.
