Hmmm
My local retailer in town received two 50 f/1.4 lenses they ordered about 2 months ago.

A couple of sources are still very confident of a replacement with the new Rebel. Possible it'll be a different lens?

  • it would make decent sense to upgrade not only the 50mm 1.4, but the 35mm 2.0.

these are very asked-for lenses for crop bodies, as well as for FFers.

and sigma and nikon have been coming up with the goods as far as modernized versions of these lenses go.

  • Well that example doesn’t preclude Canon from making both a newer 50 1.4 IS and a 50 1.4. Right? I’m growing somewhat pessimistic though about the March 25 announcement.

  • Why is anyone predicting IS on a 50mm prime? Seriously, people, what are you photographing that you can’t maintain a 1/50 shutter speed? Even worse are the people looking for IS on the 16-35mm. Why does one need a hand held shutter speed faster than 1/16 of the second? You’ve got to be kidding me. The need is so esoteric I would never expect to see it. Ever. Seriously, ever.

  • Kyle, just because you don’t see a need for it personally, doesn’t mean to say that there aren’t many other people who would welcome it. I have found the IS on my 24-105 very useful for shots in low light, where using a flash and/or tripod would either be very awkward, or not allowed.

  • Anthony, but in response to a 50mm IS… You’re comparing a f4 lens to a f1.4 lens. I for one would rather see a focus on image quality especially at larger apertures with a new 50mm over image stabilization.

  • Kyle, it’s a 16-35mm, not a 16mm. Stop cheating by supporting your argument with the most convenient figures. Unless you bought the wrong lens, you’ll also use it at 35mm. Maybe you’ll also want the better IQ or increased depth of field of a smaller aperture and want to get rid of some high ISO noise. Maybe 1/focal-length is not good enough for shaking hands on a 1.6x crop camera with a very high resolution sensor. That’s hardly esoteric.

Canon put IS into the EF-S 17-55mm lens, and it is hardly a world away from a 16-35mm. Yet, you follow the Canon line–that they freely contradict with their actions–by claiming that wide-angle lenses do not need IS. This from a company that has never heard of an incandescent light bulb, or has no idea how dim they really are, judging by the white balance performance of their cameras.

  • Leaving the IS discussion aside (guys, please behave ;) ) an upgrade of the 1.4 would be nice, as Sigma now has a decent competitor, which can also give the 1.2 a run for its money unless wide open. The Canon 50 /1.4 is a nice 15 years old now, so there might be some kind of replacement, but they also might just make a new batch, tweaking current specs a bit. After all, Sigma still has the quality check issues, and a somewhat higher price. We’ll know next month.

    (i personally hope for a fresh EF-S 50/1.4 or EF-S 35, but i doubt they will release many crop primes… )

  • but that’s the beauty of it, freeze – the 50 and 35 would be normal EF lenses. they end up being great portrait and normal lenses on a 1.6, respectively, and are also classic lengths on FF as well.

it would be a win-win for canon, and would probably be followed by a revamping of the aging 35L.

    (we can dream)

  • How about in-body IS for shorter lenses? Only the longer ones starting with 100mm actually need view stabilisation to help framing.

  • LOL @ anyone looking for IS on non-telephoto prime. That has to be the dumbest suggestion I’ve ever heard of. Do the photographic community a service and sell your SLRs; go back to your powershots.

It’s such a ‘latte-sipping-soccer-mom’ suggestion that it isn’t even funny. Seriously, find another hobby.

  • I’d want my 50mm to have IS, why not, it’s just not… price wise it wouldn’t be effective.. heck I want IS in all my primes… it only helps. try taking a tack F5.6 or F8 image in darker room (for dof) and u get a blurry picture. high ISO is not helping (unless of course you have a 5D or better.)

  • It would be great to have IS in every lens for sure, but people act as though it’s a necessity. If only people knew what actually goes into the design and creation of a lens. You can’t just slap IS into anything you see fit.

It would be a big waste of time and money if done on a 50.

  • I would like to see a 4 stop IS on canon’s 15mm fisheye. That would truly be useful.

  • Samys camera just got a fresh batch of 50mm 1.4’s, they have about 100 of them if you’re interested.

  • Spot on Tomas. This is where the future of IS technology is. A friend of mine has an a350 and I’m afraid I covet the in-body IS a little too much.

Logically speaking, it makes sense to use an in-body IS system for short focal lengths and then in-lens for longer ones that require more heavy lifting. Even if IS is less advantageous to shorter focal lengths, it could still be the difference between getting the shot and not. The two technologies are by no means mutually exclusive, so why not incorporate both?

  • Can someone please enlighten me on why we are expecting Canon to come out with a 50mm alongside a rebel? Honestly, that makes no sense at all. Furthermore, with the new 35mm DX lens that nikon just came out with (which, obviously, the market was clamoring for, since it’s in ridiculously high demand), it only makes sense that Canon would come out with a new 30mm to match, and to compete with the sigma 30mm f/1.4. A 35mmL replacement is way too upmarket for the rebel crowd and a replacement of even the antiquated 35mm f/2 still wouldn’t make much sense since the canon crops to 1.6, not 1.5 like nikon… which means a 35mm is 56mm equivalent, too long for walkability. The brand new 30mm f/1.8 will most definitely be EF-S to ward off any FF users, since not unlike the new nikon 35mm f/1.8, it will be priced very competitively, around 200 bucks. it will basically be the 50mm f/1.8 II for the crop sensor, with slightly improved build quality.

  • I’d like to comment on the usefulness of IS for short primes. Some say it is and some says it is not. IMHO, if you want to take a shot that includes a person, it is not. For other situations with no living or moving subjects, it may be useful. Unfortunately for fans of the latter situations, the market is likely too limited for Canon to really care.

  • I received a few days ago my 50mm 1.4 that I ordered last december. I’m very very pleased with it, I focuses perfectly on my 400D and I find it pretty sharp even wide open, far more than I was expecting after reading all the reviews. I do get usable picture at 1.4, nothing like this famous ‘dreamy’ effect related everywhere.
Is it possible that canon changed something in the lens design or manufacturing process, that hold production for 2 months, in order to improve the overall IQ ?

  • IS on a 50 f/1.4 would be a waste. Adds weight too. If they’re going to release glass with IS, the first to have it should be 24-70L replacement with IS. Would sell and make canon a lot more $$$ than a 50 prime with IS

  • I agree. I have already decided that if a 24-70 2.8 IS is released i will buy it… Though i expect it to be in the 1500 dollar range (ouch). I suspect there are many people that wouldnt be able to resist. If canon wants a money maker, that is it.

  • Keaton, don’t get me wrong – image quality is more important to me too. I just find it odd when somebody automatically assumes that other peoples shooting needs & restrictions are the same as their own.

  • Yeah EF 24-70 2.8 IS i’ll buy it too, right away…

Hum I mean, my bank will buy it….using sub-primes probably….

Da most logical lens to be released by Canon nowadays.

By the way, I own a 50mm 1.4, what a great lens, for a relatively cheap amount of money, specially good on aps-c dlsr because it just “uses” the best part of the lens, the middle, where performances are the highest possible.

    My 2 cents

  • Why shouldn’t they come out with a 50mm and a Rebel at the same time? Nobody expect them to sell it as a kit.

  • IS increase the chance of better sharpness at least up to 1/125 second even on shorter focal lenghts.

  • In the UK, both Jessops (my local store and on line) have plenty of 50mm f1.4s in from today. Same goes with Warehouse Express.

  • I have the 50 1.4 too. I agree that it is a great lens also, but its not that great at 1.4–even in the center. I contemplated buying the sigma instead, because its optically superior, but who wants a 1.4 lens that can’t focus accurately half the time? I would rather have the dreamy effect of the canon in-focus than the optically correct sigma out of focus. If canon updated the 50, I would probably ebay my old 50 and upgrade. I would really prefer it if it didn’t have IS though to keep the price down. I just dont think IS is necessary in a 50 1.4… I don’t typically have a problem maintaining a 1/30th sec shutter speed (which I have no problem hand-holding at 50mm on FF) at that aperture, even indoors at night.

  • I’m still sticking with my guess of a EF-S prime. 35 or 50. Makes a lot of sense in the current economy and makes sense to announce with a rebel. An EF-S 35 1.8 would make a cheap kit lens.

  • A prime kit for the rebel crowd ?

    They’d buy a powershot with 20x zoom instead…

  • >Why is anyone predicting IS on a 50mm prime? Seriously, people, what are you
    >photographing that you can’t maintain a 1/50 shutter speed?

Anything that moves indoors, eg. kids.

    > held shutter speed faster than 1/16 of the second?

Maybe because anything slower than 1/80 results in hand shake even on my 4.9x G6?
