This could be a typo or there could be something more to it.

B&H has the 5D Mark II w/24-105 f/4L IS listed as discontinued.

typo! defnitly!!!
They’re just going to replace kit lense with a new one (2.8 version?) Looks reasonable.
Hello
I will love to see a 24-105mm f/2.8
replaced by 7d + 24-70L IS kit.
5dm2 was just something to tie over the market.
ok i’m just horsing around;)
Not likely a typo, it’s been up there a few days. The fact that the kit is discontinued and the camera likely means that a new kit based on a different lens but the same camera is coming… and soon.
hey..just get ready for IS II
Yep, a lot of lenses are not listed anymore at the german page. A think they upgrade the most of them with the new Hyprid IS.
afaik it´s IS IV oder V. There were a lot of versions of IS.
But the new Hyprid IS is a new thing.
If you look at all of the 24-105 lenses at B&H all of them are back-ordered. All bodies with them included are discontinued. Something new is definitely coming.
or maybe they will just not sell it as a kit…
and sell the camera body by itself.
There still just a few lenses in production:
EF 14mm 1:2.8L II USM
EF 16-35mm 1:2.8L II USM
EF 24mm 1:1.4L II USM
EF 200mm 1:2L IS USM
EF 800mm 1:5.6L IS USM
EF-S 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 IS und EF-S 55-250mm 1:4-5.6 IS
EF-S 18-200mm 1:3.5-5.6 IS
TS-E 17mm 1:4L
TS-E 24mm 1:3.5L II

Why so? 24-105 f/4L is really good lens, and actually the best kit lens available out there.
Why don´t make good things better?
Don’t think the 24-105 will be replaced. Why will they do that? Maybe it will disappear because of a 24-70 2.8 IS, which leaves no market for a 24-105 4 IS.
Did a live chat with B & H you may be interested in this “Unfortunately the item you are asking for was discontinued by the manufacturer. We have sold out all of our stock and we can not get this item anymore.
The 100mm f/2.8 MACRO is back-ordered too. Does it mean another macro lens is coming?
Because that would make the kit a TON more expensive.
Oh yeah… and a 70-200m 2.8 leaves no market for the 70-200 4.
Think before wiriting such things.
Crap. What to do? Was sitting there with card in hand, about to purchase the 24-105mm kit when I read this. The logical side of me says the 24-105 is a great lens already AND it’s available now…who knows when the new kit will hit the shelves. Decisions decisions…buy and enjoy now, or wait for what looks to be a better kit.
Back-ordered and discontinued are different
This time of year you might be better off with a month or two of wait-and-see.
Just my two cents.
70-200 differentation is because of the 500 euro difference in price (and the weight).
24-70 and 24-105 is only a few euro’s (here in the Netherlands).
Think before writing such things, Malte.
A 24-105 f/2.8 IS would increase the weight and size of the lens significantly, not to mention the price. If anything, this might be signifying a II version of the lens (with f/4) or simply that they aren’t going to offer a kit anymore for the 5DmII. Either way, the 24-105 lens as it stands now is a good walkaround lens and I feel the extra weight that f/2.8 would add kind of ruins that.
Expect a new 100mm f/2.8 Macro with new IS added in it. But I believe Canon would still manufacture the non IS model.
BS
The kit is in stock at our local camera store, onecall.com.
Yeh, but you know how much the new lenses will cost?
btw: Here in Europe it´s a difference of about 150€
new 24-100 4 maybe something like 1200€ and the 24-105 2.8 like 1500/1600€
some has to say it…
the 24-105 is not that sharp. There is a huge concession made in sharpness for the cost and weight. Enjoy it, it is easier then caring around 24-70mm 2.8 which also IMO is not impressive in the sharpness category. I would applaud an update of this lens that would compete with the new nikon 24-70mm 2.8.
Matte has a point here actually – 24-70 and 24-105 have a bit of a difference in their focal length, don’t they? Also, a fairly old 24-70 without IS is already priced above (not much, but still) 24-105 WITH IS. Adding IS to 24-70 will place it into even higher price category, don’t you think? Also, for a walkaround lens many people will miss the extra 35mm on the long end. And if you think about the photogs who use this lense for studio portrait work, well… lets say that with a certain type of face of your subject 70mm will be your starting point for shooting. 70-105 might get a lot of use there actually (on FF). So, these two are quite different, so yes – there will still be market for a 24-105 IS 4.0. Now, if Canon brings in a 24-105 IS 2.8 – thats ANOTHER story and THAT will make 24-70 somewhat useless (unless again there will be a fair price difference).
Considering people still report shortages with 5DmkII body, Canon probably figured out that they are giving away a very good lense with a huge discount. Folks simply buy the kit and sell the lense. A lot of people who are in FF market have already purchased 24-105 a while ago. Nice lens. A true walkaround. I usually just throw a small prime (like a 28/1.8 or 85/1.8) in addition to 24-105 into my bag just in case I’ll need to make some shots in low light.
In 2009 I wouldn´t buy a lense. Wait till christmas or something.
But the current 24-105 is a nice lense and you will be happy with it. But maybe happier with the replacement.
We live in a difficult time, now :D
if canon comes out with a cheaper FF than the 5D2 it had better not have a better AF module than the 5D2… that will be a slap in the face.
24-100/105 2.8 will not happen, a 24-70 is already 950 gram or something like that, you will need a crane to mount a 24-100 2.8.
There has never been a good rumour about such a lens either.
why should a better camera than the 5D2 cost less than the 5D2?
It is spelled “lens”, not “lense”.
It is spelled “lens”, not “lense”.
you guys charge a 200 dollar premium for it too lol.
I don’t think Canon will have a 24-70 non-Is and IS next to each other, so there is no need to differentiate the price. 1000 euro is a nice price for a 24-70 2.8 IS in this economy.
The millimeters argument makes sense, but I dont’t believe in a 24-105 2.8.
better AF =/ better camera
being a purist, yes. but ever heard of alternative uses? This should stop language policing to some extent – http://www.thefreedictionary.com/lense
It depends on where you are. Colour, for example, is different in other English speaking countries.
This site gets a lot of international traffic, you may be reacting to an ESL writer.
In other words, cut people a little slack for an extra E.
I would love a 2.8 version, but I’m thrilled with the 4 if it never happens. The 24-105 rarely leaves my 5DII these days, except if I swap in a prime or 70-200. Best walkaround lens I own.
Where’d we get the Grammar Police. Take a chill pill, it’s just an e.
Also: Colour! Ha!
Just B&H sale representative, this is what he said:
Canon just discontinued this kit, just today,,,email us..
So this is not typo.
really? so worse AF = better camera?
BH reports on twitter that IT IS A TYPO!
http://twitter.com/BHPhotoVideo/statuses/3267396746
@planetMitch It is a typo

How about a more authoritative source?
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/lense
I get, “The word you’ve entered isn’t in the dictionary.”
The Free Dictionary seems to be written by people who cannot spell, but who refuse to admit it.
+1 ;-)
Just called (11:50 am EST, AUG/12/2009) B&H sale representative, this is what he said:
Canon just discontinued this kit, just today,,,email us..
So this is not typo.
A camera has more specifications than AF.
They could bring out a camera with better af, but for example less megapixels, less iso-performance. Is it a better camera? Has it better af?
They wouldn’t replace the 4.0, they’d add the 2.8 version for more money, and I doubt the 2.8 would be in a kit as it’d drive the price up too high.
It wouldn’t be bigger than a 70-200, no crame needed, lol. Also, a 24-70 2.8 IS would not make the 24-105 4.0 disappear, the 2.8 IS would just be more money.
“Colour” is an equally (if not more so) acceptable spelling of the word in most of the English speaking world – aside from the US that is..
Now can we get back to talking about cameras?
False alarm, it’s on backorder:

All Ican see from the original link is that it is backordered. And has been this way for sometime. Adorama has it for sale.
24-70 is quite good optically as it is. Adding IS will most likely place it into the same price category as current 70-200 2.8 IS. But in general I think that if we consider 24-70 2.8 IS and 24-105 2.8 IS then having 24-70 2.8 IS in Canon’s lineup will be kind of pointless. I believe Canon will add IS to 24-70 and will not introduce 24-105 with 2.8 anytime soon. However, I’d love to see Canon duplicating the situation with 24-105 as it now has with 70-200. I’d like to see both 4.0 and 2.8 for 24-105. Now, a 24-105 with 2.8 and IS would be a dream walkaround lense indeed (if not too heavy).

I wish you had something to say about the topic of this discussion. Thanks for the correction though. English is not my first language.
The 100 Macro has been back-ordered for well over a month now (I’ve been looking to buy since late June), so I’m pretty sure there’s an IS version in the pipeline. I hope so anyway; otherwise I missed out on a whole summer Macro shooting;) I’m not sure if they’ll keep the non-Macro, as you’d think it wouldn’t have been out of stock everywhere for so long.
Guys calm down. Iám from germany and not a native english speaker.
On this site are a lot of people from different countries and a lot of spelling mistakes. So why worry about it?
I believe that it is backordered because canon are busy in producing their new EOS cameras wich will most likely meet high demands after the luanch.
I think less megapixels and a worse iso performance wouldn´t make that FF-camera MUCH worse to justify the lower price. And the range between the 50/60D and the 5D2 isn´t that big.
or there will be only 24-105 f4 is and 24-105 f2.8 is and 24-70 will remain discontinued
With direct print?
This morning that B&H page said Discontinued. Now the same page says Back Ordered. So this is all a clerical error at B&H.
It’s the APS-H police, they are obsessive in general and msspelling and grammar mistakes drive them crazy!
little harsh don’t you think?
“obsessive”
Pot meet kettle.
well, if it is a clerical mistake while updating the webpage, I wonder how the BH rep is able to confirm it is discontinued by canon.
http://wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn?s=lense&sub=Search+WordNet&o2=&o0=1&o7=&o5=&o1=1&o6=&o4=&o3=&h=
Princeton disagrees.
pot and kettle work for the APS-H police dude
Wow, $1200 jump to $2700 is not that big? toss that pocket change over here if it’s no biggie
Those crazy APS-H policeman. ( i know it´s “men” but i´ll drive u crazy)
Hm yeh, u´r right but i don´t think there fits a a FF-camera between. I would love to see the “7D” there for like 1800-2000dollars?! But I don´t think it´s coming. I don´t know why.
lol
they hate direct print buttons too and if you write moar direct print buttons they start twitching and can’t respond for at least 45 minutes and then they have to pray before the APS-H shrine
Maybe a beefed up APS-C at $2000 with some higher end EF-S glass introduced with it ;)
Sony is coming out with the A750 14 MP @ $1200.00, A850 with 24.6 Mp @ $1999.95
What if Canon stuck the old 5D sensor in a 50D body, or a modified version of it? They could keep APS-C for the four Rebel models – not much difference between the T1i/500D and 50D at this point anyway, so APS-C would cover the $600 to $1000 price points and go FF the rest of the way up to compete with Sony and Nikon?
TheI haF no idAE what powA DPBs have. They try to bEEt this new comming powA with theYr old APS-H magic.
btw:
You knew that APS-H sensor are made of failed FFs?
But APS-C is made of improved and in half cutten FFs?
oh you’re killing them now…haha
“APS-H sensor are made of failed FFs” – careful, that’s heresy for them, they’ve hunted people down for saying less.
Yep, that would create a great walkaround lens (2.8)!
The A850 will f*ck canon in this segment if it is true.
When i read the A850 thing it makes a lot of more sense to me that Canon could bring a “7D”.
Have never heared about that thing from Sony.
I would love to see somethin like 6-8fps 10-15megapixel at FF, faster AF and a 100%-VF in a 5D-Body.
The A850 manual was leaked on Sony’s website, and info on the A750 and A950 have now been leaked as well, all FF it looks like.
What better way for Sony to make a market share grab than to offer a FF 14 MP body for the price of a 50D?
Rep probably reads of the website just like the rest of us!!!! LOL
When I first read this in the AM, checked BH site…the original 5D kit is discontinued. Could this be the mix up here?
Nobody said otherwise.
Becose Americans are the best and smartestest people on the planet and yous should all spell like us do!
i was at the rental house today – my guy said dont buy anything. his canon source said something about an over FF size and better than 5D2… this is the guy who has been hounding me to by a 5D2 for months…
Actually Kevin is right. Obviously a 2.8L costs more than a f/4L. Look at the 70-200 lenses.
I don’t think he thought at all. LOL
That’s because he was checking the B&H computer where this typo is on record. :)
Brought to you by Wikipedia. :P
ROFLMAO
Dude, give it a break about the APS-H stuff dude. Sheesh!
I know you’re joking, but you’re coming across as obsessive yourself!
Dave, you post here more than most people I think. LOL
You probably have the shakes after 5 seconds! :P
Yeah, but Sony sucks. :P
I don’t care how good their cameras get, SONY SUCKS.
LOL
Harden up.
Who cares how big or heavy it is.
I want a 24-105 f2.8 IS.
If you want small and light, buy a point and shoot.
+1
or EF-S haha
winnar!
LULZ!
What is “over FF size”?
+1
L lenses are suppose to be big and heavy.
Talking about that, someone who understands lens design answer this.
A 24-105 2.8L IS would be similar is size/weight to a 70-200 2.8L IS?! Or actually weigh less and/or be smaller?
Medium format?
It is now “Back Ordered”…
…and shot yourself.
I work for BEST BUY and in our system it shows that this unit both kit and body only are both discontinued
