Regarding 2.0.7
According to Canon RCC Nordic, the new firmware also fixed some banding issues with the 5D Mark II and firmware 2.0.4.

Stealth fixes happen from time to time.

Cheap Primes
I’m receiving information from around the globe about shortages of Canon’s cheap prime lenses. Some are being listed as backordered until June 30, 2010 at a couple of European retailers.

EF non L prime lenses coming?

  • Which are Canon’s “cheap prime lenses”?

I’d really like to see a fast 30 somehting mm lense from Canon

  • Hmmm… On my Droid using the RSS feed, the back order shows as 2009 while it shows as 2010 on the website…

  • I’ve looked around at some of the UK retailers, as sometimes the US has shortages of products that are available elsewhere. It appears that there is a shortage of is the EF 35mm f/2.0 and possible the EF 28mm f/2.8. Warehouse Express (generally a good indicator) have the 28 in stock, but not the 35, other retailers have neither available (but this could simply represent lack of demand).

Draw whatever conclusions you like from this! It could be that there is a new prime on the horizon, aimed at the APS-C ‘normal’ market. Equally, it could just mean that Canon doesn’t produce many of these old lenses and they are at the back of the production plan, waiting for a space.

    I hope it’s the former!

  • Cheap primes/ The price has been going up on the existing ones, and new ones would cost a lot more.

    Maybe we’ll see plastic lenses?

  • Oh my. If they are going to create “improved” Mk2’s out of their old primes in the same way they did it with the 50/1.8, I’m going to buy one more piece of each non-L prime I own…

  • i think that fixing the older primes would go along way toward moving Canon back to #1.

a series of lenses made from teh same material as the 1002.8 L (feels like a polymer) without weather sealing etc but maybe even a bit faster than teh existing lenses but with prices under 400 would sell well to both photographers and videographers.

    20/2

    24/2

28/2 (taking place of both 2.8 and 1.8)

    35/2

    50/1.4

I’d like to see a 17/2.8 or some such lens as well giving the FF folks a cheaper option for ultra wide and the cropped folks a nice 28 field of view option….wide but not super wide

  • dream on. In other news, the banding fixes are really noteworthy for us 5D2 owners if they are true.

  • There is no reason to change a 50mm f/1.8. It’s cheap, a great seller and if they would improve it, it would be more expensive. So no reason to do that.
But I really really want to have a 50mm f/1.4 II or IS… an IS version would be great. I would buy this one right after the 70-200 f/4 IS this winter.
The old 1.4 ist just too weak and too soft…

  • My money is on the back of the production plan. With the f/2.8 versions being neither faster nor optically better than L zooms, I can’t imagine them selling enough units to be anywhere else.

  • With Olympus’s &Sony’s pancake lenses – is there now a need for an SLR equivelent to improve canon SLR sales over Sony?

  • Am thinking if Canon will not correct barrel distortion in future lenses.

There is trend going on, even Lightroom will correct lens distortion in future releases.

  • either a upgrade of current models or they are lowering productions to raise prises as they have done a price increase on all new lenses last 2 years i fear that either way they are more expencive…

canonn is becoming a hell of a ripoff lately everything new is verry expencive.

like the new 70-200 is how on earth can they justify a increasement in price of 500+ euro

i seriously hope that tamron and sigma come with some great lenses for a good price soon or this gobby is getting to expencive.

  • I think Canon is just working their inventory down and not replacing the inventory due to the economy.

With that said, Canon should replace the 2.8 primes with 2.0 primes, sharp at 2.0 an affordable.

With that said, Canon also needs to replace the 50 1.4 and make a new 85 1.4 that can really AF faster than the 85 1.2.

    An add a 135 1.8 IS.

  • The last firmware fixed an issue with shooting with a remote, when the remote was plugged in the camera wouldn’t respond (couldnt change settings)

    Wasn’t mentioned anywhere :D

  • “According to Canon RCC Nordic, the new firmware also fixed some banding issues with the 5D Mark II and firmware 2.0.4.”

That would be a VERY nice improvement for those who requested a “fix” for that so many times… (all of us included)

That was also included in the LIST of FIXES & IMPROVEMENTS sent to Canon long ago: http://5dmark2.wordpress.com/2009/12/17/canon-firmware-updates/

It’s true that Canon fixes issues or improves functions sometimes without officially telling it to customers.

So this statement or comment by Canon RCC Nordic deserves a good test to confirm it. Hopefully it’s true and the banding/pattern noise is (at least) less noticeable than before.

  • quote – “Cheap Primes …

EF non L prime lenses coming?”

No – just a run on purchases because Ken Rockwell has been talking up cheap primes lately.

  • Ideally:

    EF-S 15mm f/2 (24mm-e)
    EF-S 20mm f/2 (35mm-e)
    EF 24mm f/2
    EF 35mm f/1.8
    EF 50mm f/1.4
    EF 85mm f/1.8 (Already exists.)
    EF 100mm f/2 (Already exists.)

    All internal-focusing, all with ring-USM.
Preferably all with 58mm filter thread.
    Cost between $400-$500.

These short primes fit closely with the focal lengths of Canon’s L-series primes: 24L, 35L, 50L, 85L, 100L; and an APS-C equivalent of the 135L.

I think it would be a wise move for Canon to offer reasonably fast short primes as they’ll probably sell very well without cannibalising the sales of L-series lenses c.f.: 85/1.8 vs. 85/1.2 and 50/1.4 vs. 50/1.2.

  • I don’t care if they are CHEAP or not, all I care about is build quality/focus speed/IQ equivalent to an 85/f1.8. $500.00 range is OK for me.

    I’d love to see a 22/f1.8 (36mm equiv) and a 30mm/f1.8 (48mm equiv). A 50mm/f1.4 II would also be good.

    Please, please, please NO IS!

  • RE: No – just a run on purchases because Ken Rockwell has been talking up cheap primes lately.

Which might – **might** – account for the purchase of about 5 lenses, if everyone who takes KR seriously actually bought one.

  • I recently purchased a 35mm f/2.0 at Adorama and the date code on lens is 2010. So they are definitely still producing that sucker. It’s awesome & sharp.

Oh, and it’s real quiet in MF mode!

  • Great so can you test it and let us know?

thanks. lookin fwd to your findings

  • this happened last year. I was looking for a 35/2 new, and it was OOS everywhere. Then rumors (including at northernlights) pointed towards a replacement perhaps. Nothing.

A new 35/2 would be good. Keep the optics for all i care, it’s a good lens.

  • RE: cheap prime shortage.

I think the theory has been raised before that the manufacturers don’t continuosly make all the lenses throughout the year. I think they tool up for a run of one lens at a time – build up stock, then move on to the next model. Stock might run low before the next production run is scheduled.

  • Because IS isn’t need on a short lightweight lens. All it does is add to weight/bulk and cost.

It’s easy to learn how to brace/hold a camera and use breath control, its just like shooting a rifle. I learned how to do this, from the US Army, during basic training in 1960.

  • After the latest firmware updates my 5DMk2 bideo mode can now see thru clothes.

  • However steady you can be, IS will give you even more. While I wont expect IS on the cheap models, I do hope they make it in the line at some point particularly at wider angles. That or just get sensor shift stabilisation.

  • I find that unlikely to happen until Canon start to routinely offer distortion in camera. Not everyone shoots raw, especially on the low end of the market where cheaper lenses are more likely to end up. Systems where it is happening are new ones where they design that in from the start.

  • Most of my work is shot using an AcuteB 600R, but I still do available light work. I have no problem handholding an 85/f1.8 on the street at night.

With the wonder of modern high ISO cameras the need for IS becomes less and less.

  • Keep the optics the same on the 50mm f/1.8 but change the iris and change the focus mechanism.

  • I already regularly use ISO3200 on a 7D, and would probably go higher as and when I go full frame. While it is “good enough” much of the time, the quality at lower ISO is noticeably better. On the assumption subject motion is not an issue, I’d take IS given the choice. One of the things I missed when switching to Canon was the loss of sensor shift stabilisation, as combined with a fast prime that really shines in low light situations.

  • thats no reason for old lenses till the day is release being that much cheaper then the new one were just getting screwed and were letitng it happen AGAIN

  • However steady you can be, IS will give you even more. While I wont expect IS on the cheap models, I do hope they make it in the line at some point particularly at wider angles. That or just get sensor shift stabilisation.

  • The euro theory might hold water if the price in dollars were not also up by 500 or more. Sounds to me like an early adopter tax. I’m guessing the price will drift slowly downward in the next year or two as the novelty wares off. (Much the same as what happened with pretty much all iterations of the 1D and 5D.)

Good things come to those who wait. . . and those who resist the urge to show off the newest glass around their necks at all times.

Even those of my clients who are curious enough to know if I shoot Canon or Nikon don’t base any hiring decisions on whether I shoot Canon or Nikon. They certainly don’t give a rat’s if I’m using the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS L or the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS L II.

  • Canon has not released more than 5 lenses a year for at least a decade, unless it released two versions of the same lens (e.g. w/ & w/o USM).

Considering Canon has already released one lens this year and the economics, how likely is it that Canon has decided to upgrade three or more short primes at once ? And that would be Canon’s show & tell in the upcoming photokina ?

I think Canon should, e.g. upgrade all the f/2.8 primes to be at least a stop faster, but I don’t see it happening.

  • I won’t say it makes NO difference, but I’m pretty agnostic on the benefits of IS below about 100mm. Mostly, I agree with c.d. embry that in the short tele/normal to wide angle range, good camera support techniques are about as good as IS.

I don’t seem to notice a lot of benefit from the IS on my 24-105 f/4.0.

    Purely my opinion.

  • I will be happy if they could put IS (two/three) stops will do) on the current 135 F2.0 and 200 F2.8 woithout compromizing IQ and breaking the bank. A (black) 1.4 X extender dedicated to these two lenses will be a bonus

  • For me the difference is that you can use F5.6/8 and ISO 400 with IS vs. F4.0 and 1600 with no IS. Even on the 5D2 it shows.

  • i found this firmware to be no better than previous versions in terms of banding reduction.. my camera has excessive banding at iso 6400+

  • would make sense if lots of bigger shows are starting to adapt to shooting 5D, hard to imagine somthing like house shooting without HMIs

  • they will not answer your question dude & will delete your post sooner. mark my word. they know 5dmk2 focusing can’t fixed.

  • for some i do see a great improvement on reducing the banding. i was shooting at iso 200 with noticeable banding before and it has seems to disappear and thats without noise reduction!
