5D Mark II Price Increase in Canada?

Canon Rumors
0 Min Read

From a reader

The reader was told there was a Canadian price increase coming on the
5D2.

This would mean all Canadian preorders would end up costing more.

I’ll try to find more info.

  • Well, I pre-ordered my 5DII from Aden Camera for $2,769 but now the site is listing the camera at $2,969!
Vistek and other shave not increased their prices yet.

  • With the increased US$ and this being new stock, makes sense. Timing sucks for those buying though.

  • Are they even allowed to raise the price on something you pre-order? I think when you pre-order they HAVE to guaranty the price, no?

  • Unfortunately, a pre-order is just that. The order is not really final until they charge your card. I agree that it is very bad publicity for Canon to do this, and many might cancel their order.

The dealers may or may not honor the original price, depending on what they have to pay for the cameras.

  • I preordered at a pro camera shop with a reasonable price in the Netherlands (www.fotokonijnenberg.nl). Their sales conditions say that they will pass price decreases on to their customers, but will not pass price increases on. Sounds very decent.

  • Interestingly only Aden Camera has bumped their price so far in Canada… Have to wait and see… I don’t really care about the 200$ extra if the camera can finally be available ;)

  • Well, even if I have no affiliation with Aden Camera, except that I’m a happy customer with them, I know they are quite close to Canon, so I won’t be surprise if they are the fastest to react. Ed (the guy at Aden) told me that an increase could be possible with the exchange rate issue. He had no firm price from Canon, so I think others don’t have any firm price as well… time will tell, but for sure Canon will do their best to screw us again… I’m still angry with the 3 years delay between the 2 5D’s.

  • Again, I suggest you buy a D700. Why buy a camera that costs $1000 more than the D700, and has less than half the features? And don’t get me started about the 50D!!

  • plus if i was going to switch why not just wait for the D800 but then again Noinks have no lens for the price I need

  • Having cancelled my pre-order with an American store because the dollar is so low, I was going to pre-order with TheCameraStore.com. I called them up probably two weeks ago and they told me that the price for all Canadian retailers was not set and that they would likely all be seeing an increase because of the crappy dollar. The sales guy was not able to give me a final amount, but even at the Aden price quoted above at just under $3,000 CAD, that’s still much cheaper than the $2,700 USD it’s going over here. With the D700 going for $2,300 after rebates, Canon should drop the price somewhat to stay competitive. I know they’re sold out across the board, but after the initial wave is sold, they’ll have to start worrying about getting the amateur market – the ones that think a bit more on their purchase.

  • Come on.. Canon just had a crappy quarter and they want to make up for that by charging you extra on the 5D2; they’re not just selling overpriced $200 LP-E6 batteries! And their 50D is also hurting them because it’s just so, well, crappy.

Why wait longer and disappoint yourself when you can get a PROVEN D700, which is FALLING (unlike some others) in price. If Canon can’t be competitive, then…. that’s their problem.

  • Nikon, 12k$ of Canon lens keep me with Canon. The results of the previous 5D keep me with Canon. Nikon is doing great, but it’s too late for me. They were not there 3 years ago when I needed a full frame.

Also, I’m surprised of your free statement. This is based on your hate for Canon… which is not really objective. Note that there is no real review of the Production 5D MKII at this time. Do you have a feeling, like I do, that the 5d MKII could easily beat the D700 in image quality ? That would explain why you have so much time to loose on a Canon Forum… because if your so sold out to the D700 (and I guess you have one) why would you take even a second to read Canon rumors… that make no sense… spare that time and go shooting. Please, save my time and stop posting here.

  • Nikon, I forgot to say that the first 5D, 3 years ago, was already 12MP… and it’s way cheaper than the D700 right now.

  • That one is pretty real. Just spoke to a commercial salesman in my local store in Montreal. He told me both Canon and Nikon are coming with significant price augmentation because the yen or ying or yang or wathever currency they have in Japan has become stronger and stronger since mid-august.

He told me if you have something to buy do it NOW!

  • After convinced by my friend who use nikon D700, I was about the update to D700 with Carl Zeiss Lenses. However, I feel upset while i see so much crap from NIKON in this rumors. I CANCEL my D700 order from Nikon camera shop and stay with canon. Plus Nikon D700 is not what I want, D3 maybe, but too expensive, only 5d2 is good enough for me at this moment.

Nikon, If what you have done is what NIKON company pays you. I would suggest all of my friends to give up all kind Nikon product.

Personally, I am happy to compare 2 different products. However, we want to make up out mind by ourselves, not someone B*ll Sh*t around for one product, that just makes us hate that product.

  • The price for 5d2 will increase a lot in Aus as well.
Will purchase it till economy becomes steady.

  • I’d like to get back to the topic of the original post. I have a 5DMKII on pre-order from Vistek since September 18. I have both an “Order Confirmation” and “Order Accepted” email from them that both quote a specific price. There are no conditions listed anywhere stating that the price is tentative or subject to change. On what grounds can they now change the price? Whithout any stated qualifiers on their documentation, I am not aware of any grounds under which they can back out of what appears to my lay experience to be a written contract.

  • I also have the 5DmII on order without anything said about price pending or subject to change. Are they allowed to change it after the fact?

The bigger question is: Will all other canon products go up in price due to the dollar? If the 5DmII changes, all others should change as well. If they don’t, why only the one product?

  • Web trolls are so clever. Outlandish statements like “less than half the features” and “selling like hotcakes” are emotion-laden zingers that convey an individual who’s intelligence is on par with that of a pre-pubescent teenager.

Let’s see how sales of the 5D Mark II compare with the D700 in a year’s time, with the D700 having quite a head start on the Canon…..

  • Well, don’t wait for Canon to set the high price. Go with a D700. Forget the 5D – it’s features are outdone by the D700. Don’t just hear it from me – try it – you’ll never want to go back! If you’ve got Canon lenses, you’ll be able to sell them for more, or better yet, use a Canon mount adapter and manually focus to perfection.

  • A “canon mount adapter”? Lol, tell me where I can get a eos-nikon adapter and I’ll buy a D700 for veryone who posts here.

  • A “canon mount adapter”? Lol, tell me where I can get a eos-nikon adapter and I’ll buy a D700 for everyone who posts here.

  • Dear “Nikon”

    1) That adaptor is for F to EF. It’s impossible to do EF to F due to flange distance or something. I’m not the most technical guy.

    2) I’ve had a few emails about your conduct here. If you can’t stay on topic, please don’t post. People feel you break the flow of a discussion.

    3) Have fun and I hope you can remain what appears to be a loyal reader and avid contributor.

    Thanks

  • Well, crappy news for us in the US. “Clown” Ben Bernake cut the US Federal Reserve rate yesterday which helped erode our US dollar by over 7% today. What seemed like a good deal, buying from Canada, is now not worth the effort if it’s only a 5% betterment than the US price :-(

  • Hello, Nikon here…I’m the annoying little, unemployed twat who constantly bombards several Photography & technology sites forums with useless twatty posts about Nikons D700.

Luckily I have just had an epiphany and now realise what a twatty-twat-twat I really am AND that Canons line up of lens crap all over Nikons pathetic glass offerings. And, after all, it’s the glass that matters since digital camera bodies get replaced every 6 months.

I shall refrain from further demonstrating my complete twattishness and retarded outlook on life…by ending it. Goodbye cruel, non D700 worshipping world!

  • To everyone who has pre-order a 5D MKII. Here is the question and I’ll let you answer. Since Canon never officially “froze” a price, what would happen if they raise the price by 200$? Do you think your camera store won’t try to pass you the difference ? You might be able to fight… but you might have some bad suprised to.

To be honnest, Canon did real bad ad on this one… some are waiting since 2 years for the new 5D MKII. Finally, we got the news, we were all excited, place our pre-orders and now… they change the rule… and with all that said we still have no firm date for delivery (nor quantity available). I don’t want to be a jerk, but it seems to me that Canon count a bit to much on our loyalty… and guess what, I’ll still try to get the first 5D MKII available in Canada (well, let say one of the first ;-)). Sounds a bit like the gas business, we can’t live without it.

  • I called several stores pretending I placed an order there, they all said they will honor the price at which i preordered.
On henrys website the price is still 2799, and I called them as well, they said the price is 2799 for walk-in preorders as well.

Nikon: if you have nothing informative to contribute ON TOPIC, please, refrain from posting all together. If everybody starts posting about their favourite carebears and pet lizards, these discussion posts will be bigger than your mouth.

  • Can’t we ban that guy? Or at least get a feature where we can wholesale ignore him.

I don’t know how it would work in Canada, but you would likely have a legal action if someone did that in America. You can’t change a pre-order price. The bait and switch problem is huge. I’d like to see a judge weigh in on that (from the bench, officially) but I don’t imagine too many would be keen to say that a pre-order is free to adjust the price. That’s the problem in dealing in futures. We see it every day in the stock market.

I don’t have a problem with them changing the price – in Canada – going forward. The conversion rate to the USD has changed 20% in 2 months. That’s a huge problem for marketing as well as sales. Marketing has to be worried about people ordering from Canada and reimporting the cheaper goods into the US, and sales has to be worried about the loss of revenue. All that said, pre-orders are essentially an agreement to buy a good at a given price. The only thing they could do is break the agreement, but they’d be liable for breaking the agreement, they definitely couldn’t change the price unilaterally.

    As always, INYL – YMMV.

  • (I can use a pseudonym, too!)

I would be interested to know what will happen when the supposed price drop (for marketplace/competition reasons) in a few months runs into the forecasted price increase (for currency value reasons)… Anybody have a sense as to how that’s going to shake out? Quite a weird combination of global marketplace and global economy factors we have going on! I suppose that each person’s desires will probably depend on where they live.

  • OMG stop the presses Nikon contributed without sounding like a retarded fanboi!

It’s an interesting observation with camera makers because all three big boys are based in Japan, however 2 are traded on the NYSE with Nikon being on the Tokyo exchange. This would imply that Nikon is based around the relative strength of the Japanese economy/currency where Sony and Canon would be linked to America and the USD. This will be interesting going forward as the USD has started trending stronger against other currencies in the past few months after an entire administration of negative rates.

Long story, short: If the USD is stronger than the Yen relative to the CAD, buy Nikon – if you are only looking at price. If the Yen is stronger, buy Canon – if you are only looking at price.

However if all you care about are manual pages, buy Nikon, it’s surely the better value at 450 pages for $2500! Hell of a deal!

  • Of course, they can change a pre-order price, and in the USA as well.

I pre-ordered a Canon 50D with 18-200mm lens the day it appeared on Amazon.com for $1699. Three weeks later they raised the price to $2100 and cancelled my order. The fine print says they can change the price or cancel your order at anytime.

you can bet I am avoiding amazon.com now. There are lots of camera stores that do not do this.

  • @KJ–Interesting comment about the companies and the respective markets. For me (still using my new favorite pseudonym), it’s all about finding the sweet spot between a falling market price and whatever price increases happen due to global economies. It’s looking (in the US, at least) like that sweet spot might be around the new year, after the holidays?…

  • I know of apple and another big pc company who are raising their laptop prices in Aust. It’s due to exchange rates and to maintain margins. I assume camera co’s will do the same.

They hope that our demand for their products outweighs our reluctance to buy at higher prices. That might be the case if your laptop dies but for most amateurs with cameras that’s not the case.

If the 5DII goes too much higher I’ll just wait & sit with my current gear until the economy settles or my need outgrows my willpower. ;)

  • While the digital camera market is effectively like the computer market (new models every 6 months to 1 year, increasing amounts of processing power, etc), an older camera can still take amazing pictures. Much like with performance cars, the ‘operator’ is a huge factor in performance. If anybody needs proof of this, go to Flickr and see what others are doing with your current, or even your old, camera. All of this doesn’t negate the desire for new features inside of a nice, new toy…um, tool, of course. ;)

  • I just got the e-mail from my local camera shop saying this,

“We just got notification from Canon that because of the “dramatic change in the market conditions” they have to raise the price of the 5D MarkII. The body only price is now $3099.00 up from $2799.00.
Do you want to keep the order we have for you?”

I just called Henry’s as in an earlier post someone mentioned they will be honoring prices on existing orders. They are saying now that they won’t for future pre-orders and they are still undecided on existing orders.

  • I think a site needs to be set up to bring more attention to this issue (pre-order price increases). If anyone has any suggestions please bring them forward.

  • class action lawsuit involving all who pre paid against all photo equipment dealers who accepted the prepayment would be the only recourse

  • Class action lawsuits will not work, as the cost would involve testimony from monetary experts qualified to render expert knowledge of international money markets.

Unless you are qualified as having expert knowledge in this very specialized area, it could cost a great deal more than the additional cost of price increase on a camera or lens.

This is about more than just one company – “Canon”, or corporate greed. The depreciation of world money markets will eventually encompass all suppliers of advanced digital
and electronic systems. Adjustments will be made – you will pay more or do without, on more than just DSLR’s.

I understand the frustration on your “dream DSLR acquisition” – try to broaden your perspective to what is really going on.

  • Charles this case is as easy as individual customers taking their specific distributors to small claims court. Customers can represent themselves and if they end up losing they won’t be forced to pay the legal fees of the distributor. It would be a nightmare for Vistek and Henry’s to be facing hundreds of small claims courts cases, but it wouldn’t be too much work at all for the customers who take them there.

Try to narrow your perspective on what the issue is here.

  • i just got to know from a little bird that Canon malaysia will increase the price and delay till end dec 08 or jan 09. the thing about Canon malaysia is it did not declare the price when it was launched. it says it will be a special price for those pre-book early birds. now it’s not so special anymore i guess.

  • Yes Charles Rob is right – the issue is contract agreement – All I have to do is how the original sales order with no disclaimers on price changes, that enacted a deposit from my credit card at the time of order, couple that wil a bill of final sale for the new price and voila Canon and the co-conspirator authorized reseller owes me the difference, I exit stage left with my money and they fight out who owes who bewteen themselves, I think Canon would playt he heavy and screw the reseller for fear of not supplying them.

    Also – follow this one:
-Canon Canada has a corporate and consumer division
-both are urn by the same management at the top of the food chain
-both divisions of canon Canada have use of the same lawyers?
-both are not ignorant of what the other is doing – yet
the corporate division (rep i spoke to directly – consumer rep stopped answering the phone the day the increase occurred – i spoke to him the day before) was surprised to learn my invoice from an authorized reseller for a consumer product did not have a price increase disclaimer – it is legally required to avoid this exact issue
    – Canon is aware of ordering things at futures prices –

I believe Canon Canada has received delivery of stock at the prices they previoiusly agreed upon from their international supplier (US) and are needlessly (because it is not costing them more) increasing the price to us for unrelated reasons – merely to increase profit fo rhteir own benefit, and are scapegoating the economic conditoins as a cover to effectively steal (by using the unfair advantage of their psotion to gain the upper hand – illegal) an additional $300. not because it costs them more, but because we are willing to pay it

then they are confusing the issues further by citing the legality of a disclaimer they failed to have the authorized resellers employ, my receipt says nothing about price increases – i depositsed to gaurantee delivery at an agreed upon price.

Do you think they all got just a little too excited at the potential profitability and forgot to cover their rears if that is what is normally done in the corporate side (if economy truly is an issue) or ….. or are they just on crack to think Canadian’s would do nothing about Canon’s attempt to break a contractual obligation
(or is it the reseller’s obligaiton or both – who is driving this – they were all excited when the initial response was good to pre-orders motnhs ago)

In the end the polite “f” you attitude inthe response letter to Rob at http://stoppriceincrease.blogspot.com/
(where the contractual implications were ignored and the issues weer not addressed – avoided)

    shows you
HOW LITTLE RESPECT CANON HAS FOR THEIR WORD, THEIR MOST LOYAL PHOTOGRAPHERS, AND CANADA IN GENERAL.

  • Do not let them steal your money and your integrity – you owe it to yourself not to allow them to walk all over you and enable them to believe they can continue to do this – if you do not stand up to this you are probably jsut taking the easy way out – in the end an irresponsible and selfish thing to do…

Demand they honour the original price, never cancel the pre-order under no circumstance s- you ca either leave it open undelievered and in breach of contract or you can pay the levy and then submit to small claims the preorder sales receipt with the deposit stub (my credit card transactoin proof) and the n the delivery receipt – proof you have been wronged legally.
