Yea i am facing this problem too, check out this thread. The black spots seem to consistently appear on the right side of the street lamps. Hopefully Canon can fix this asap

Besides that, i should say that i am truly amazed by the high ISO performance of the camera, as evidenced here

And a Photo.net article:

You can see the black dots popping up in this video, too: around 1:00 with the candles

otherwise its a beautiful video.

I am not seeing this problem in mine. The only thing I’m noticing is a few random colored and occasional black pixels in my blacks in some night shots I took at 1600 ISO and they were 25′ exposure JPGs. There isn’t many so they rubber stamp out quickly.
I think this is normal for digital though.
dont have it on mine
…neither do they appear on Roland lim’s production 5d2 on the street light pic @iso 6400 (4th pic down) and he’s was bought in hong kong http://rolandlim.wordpress.com/ curious to know where u people all bought urs? is it region (factory) specific?
Interesting, I should get mine here in Gibraltar so il check that out and post my findings here :)
Don’t have it on mine!
…
Oh wait, that’s right, I still haven’t received mine from Amazon. Guess I shouldn’t have ordered it on the second day.
One has to be crazy to be an early adopter for such a pricey body!
LOL
Go Canon!!
I believe these were explained as appearing on jpeg shots in blown out highlights. They don’t appear in raw.
Ed, actually they do appear in RAW, just mainly at higher ISOs (But still a little bit at lower ones too)
They don’t appear on mine. My first impression is that the high iso is just STUNNING. I was shooting on a film set which was using low powered tungsten lights yesterday so I was at iso2500 and it just blew me away. I would happily use that any day. I just peeped those shots closer and i cant see those black artifacts anywhere… i was shooting RAW
don’t appear on mine thankfully. Amazing camera! And my extra battery and grip came in today. yea!
can’t wait to hear response from canon about this. it’s weird that canon could not see this problem before they launch the product.
Mine was bought from a local dealer in Titusville, Florida.
I haven’t shot anything over 6400 but my images are impressively clean, jpeg and raw.
I’d like to know what speed cards these images are being written to.
I noticed the black dots on only 2 of my images, but very slight. HOwever, I noticed that when shooting an image, the left hand side of the images have blurred or unsharp areas.
Unbelieveable. How can this happen? Check your cameras for the same pls.
I returned the crappy 50D a month ago. I preordered the 5D2 from Ritz 3 months ago and when they shipped it on Monday, Fedex lost it!
I think it’s a sign. I am sticking with my 1DIII which is still the best and a REAL professional camera.
I am NOT going to get a 5D2… Canon is messing up big time and they are paying for it. Unfortunately Nikon’s D3X is the best camera in the world right now with their proven quality at a price, of course. But the D3 beats the 1DIII in speed and quality as well.
Too bad I am not going to bail out on Canon just yet. But they better get their act together or they are going to keep losing customers…
I can’t wait for a 1D replacement ASAP. Canon needs it and PRO’s need it.
If things keep going like this, next Olympics or next World Cup all you are gonna see is big Black Telephoto Lenses…
:^(
This is not a camera issue but processing issue, under certain conditions even D3,D700 exhitbit the same pattern
That’s what I think. Mine is perfect and I’m not usually that lucky.
So if Canon need to repair this , will this be a firmware job ? or a recall job ?
If it’s a recall i’m assuming a full refund will be in order ?
I sent Canon an email regarding this issue. I am still waiting on my 5D2 to show up and wanted to know if they knew anything about the issue. They claim they have NOT received any complaints and said they did not have the time to read the mulitple threads center around this topic. Grrr!! I think I successfully got a support person with an attitude… So I am now waiting for their next response as I told them that was unacceptable answer. So my suggestion is if anyone is having problems with the black dots, to kindly send canon support an email with your photo. The only way this will be address is if canon gets a flood of emails… Here the link… https://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=SupportMailerAct&fcategoryid=215&modelid=17662
Also I like to suggest that CR post an entry on the main page of the site suggesting that customers who are seeing black spots, to send Canon an email. Thanks.
I did re-examine one of the 5D MK II beta photos that was available on the internet in both jpeg and raw at various ISO’s. Available Here (Huge File) http://www.akihabaranews.com/en/news-16901-Akiba+Interactive+Review:+Cannon's+5D+Mark+II+(beta)+RAW+Pictures+by+Night.html
It is a night shot with lots of bright lights. In all cases, I viewed them at 100%. They were not visible when reduced to screen size (24″ screen)
In the jpeg out of camera shots, I could see the black spots on a few lights. The very high ISO settings had them the most, 6400, 12800 and 25600.
I then converted the raw files using Adobe ACR, and the black dots were also quite visible as square black pixels, much worse at high ISO’s.
I then tried DPP, and right away noticed that they were less visible, but still there(NR at 0).
Finally, I tried sharpraw pro, and the dots were also visible.
Just to see what would happen, In DPP, I turned off auto lighting optimizer and put noise reduction of 8 luminance and 4 color and they disappeared. When I activated the autolighting optimizer, they came back slightly. At ISO 6400 and higher, a little noise reduction seems normal in any event.
For this photo, the black pixels were extremely minor and since very high ISO noise was a lot worse, using NR made them go away. Until I get my camera and do my own tests, I am not yet convinced that they are a problem.
Ed- agreed. Some CAs are harder to fix than this and are often visible without pixel peeping.
Here’s a link on something called “Black-Pitting”. As good a candidate for the problem as any, and likely fixable in firmware:
http://hannemyr.com/photo/defects.html#bp
Here are some pictures processed from RAW and taken at ISO ranging from 800 to 3200.

Viewed at 100% crop, the black spots can be seen in certain high exposure areas like the light bulbs on the Christmas tree. However, not all high exposure areas show this “black spot” symptom. Seems like they only appear under certain conditions. In any case, i hope that Canon is working on something to solve this problem
No soup for you !
Hello my name is Alex, and I own a Canon FS-100 camcorder. I mostly use it to film skateboarding. Windows Movie Maker is the only movie editor program I have. When I try to upload my videos on it, it says it cannt import this type of file. Do you know of any movie editor programs that is compatiple with my camcorder?
Sehr interessant. Kommt hier noch ein Folgeartikel? Würde gern mehr darüber hören. Kannst du mir per E-Mail eine Antwort geben?
