  • If the specs hold up, 18mp @ 8fps is impressive. The 1D does 10fps but only @ 10mp.

Can’t wait for the next 1D! 21mp @ 10fps would certainly be possible with dual Digic 5. Oh and… make it FF :)

  • Translation from NL
    * 18M APS-C CMOS
    * Dual DiGiC 4, 14bit
    * 8fps, 94 large fine jpegs or 15 RAWs
    * 19 points cross type AF sensor. Center AF point uses cross plus X type AF sensor
    * ISO 100-6400, extend to 12800
    * 100% coverage, 1.0x opitcal viewfinder with smart information display. Digital gradiometer provided
    * 3.0inch LCD, 920,000 dot
    * New iFCL metering system, brightness and color
    * 150,000 shutter life cycle
    * internal e-ttl flash control

  • This is gonna be an awesome camera, I’ll just shoot sRAW 99% of the time =)

Let’s get a translation! TEN THOUSAND internet monies to whoever can be of help!

  • EOS 7D
    -APS-C CMOS sensor, 18mp
    -Dual Digic 4, 14 (something)
-8 FPS, up to 94 jpeg or 15 RAW
-8pts center AF, 19 pts cross type AF
    -ISO 100-6400, expandable to 12800
-100% viewfinder, electronic horizon (3 lines?)
-new iFCL technology for noise and saturation
-92k pixels, 3inch OLED (LCD) screen
-HDMI output, inbuilt microphone (not sure what the first part means – short clear shooting is the direct translation)
    -liveview
-(not sure) something about an on-off switch)
-150,000 shutter life, revolutionary body design
-new design 24mm flash, seems to be compatible with EOS flash system (maybe the wireless flash tech thing)
    -Auto lighting optimizer
    -peripheral illumination correction
    -a lot of customizable options
    -EOS system ready

  • Sheesh.. Since it has 2 DIGICs I was kind of hoping for 2 Direct Print buttons. Sorry but as long as Canon keeps it in the DP jokes never get old.

  • What’s new that I can tell:

bullet 4: new center 8-direction double-cross focus sensor, all 19-point cross type focus sensors

    bullet 13: built-in 24mm wide flash

Same as before: 18MP APS-C sensor, double Digic 4, 14-bit, 8 FPS, up to 94 JPEGs and 15 RAWs continous shooting, ISO 100-6400, expandable to 12800, 100% viewfinder

  • this seems like a pretty niche setup, birders and sports photogs? just in time for football season

  • the translation would be too long but basically the spec is the same as previous post..
only a few more not too useful feature.
basically, new AF, center 8 way sensor, all 19 point cross, 8fps, iso to 6400 expand to 12800, 100% view finder with electronic horizon, new metering sytem with color and brightness called iFCL, mic and HDMI for video, full HD movie, face detection, “new movie/live view switch”,
stream line design 150,000 shutter, 24mm flash, auto lighing , auto image correction, dust removal system .

  • Why 18mps?? We don’t need that much in a APS-C!!!! I would prefer 12mps, 12fps, same ISO performance as the 5D MKII.

  • My guess it that the new button on the right of the viewfinder is a dedicated movie/live view button. Seems to have a red dot near it? or red REC

  • hmmm. wonder when they’ll release an adapter to mount the MT-24EX to that bad boy…doesn’t look 58mm to me….

    13.) 24mm, EOS

    14.) ???

    15.) ???

    16.) ???

17.) compatible with all EOS mount lenses & accessories

  • Any chance the “new design 24mm flash, seems to be compatible with EOS flash system (maybe the wireless flash tech thing)” means it’s a built-in Master? ¡¿Por favor?!

  • everything is great….. except its aps-c, im already dreading the high noise pictures.
    100mm macro is L , woohoo!

  • Oh, the front view pic of the 7D also shows that it has an IR receiver like all the Rebels and the 5DII, which means we can now finally use those affordable RC-1 and RC-5 IR remote triggers!!! =) It has always struck me as odd that the xxxD had it from the start, but the xxD & xD never had that feature. What, IR remotes are just for newbies? Stupid Canon logic.

  • I think Canon never releasing any metering system that can recongize color like Nikon’s..

  • 1. 18MP APSC CMOS
    2. Dual DIGIC 4
    3. 8 FPS (~14 FINE JPEG/ 15 RAW)

    17. EOS Integrated Dust Removal system

  • point 4, center is 8-way, double cross sensor
point 6, 100% view finder, with intellegent display and support electron horizon.
point 17 is dust remove system

  • This thing sounds like Canon are genuinely trying to add a bit of innovation. If they manage to pull off good low-light performance then this sounds super jolly.

  • EOS 7D:

    1) 18 million effective pixels.

    2) Dual DIGIC 4, 14bit ADC

    3) 8 fps, 94 hq jpg or 15 raw images in one time

    4) all new 8 direction dual cross type center AF, 19 point all cross type AF

    5) iso100-6400 expendable to iso12800

    14) automatic dynamic range optimizer

    15) lens falloff correction

    16) rich photo styles

    17) EOS general dedust system

  • Some other body observations:

    – As per previous leaked photos, M.Fn button is confirmed to be real, as is the relocated power switch below the mode dial on the top-left side of the body and the pop-up flash (a nice feat considering the 100% coverage, 1.0X magnification VF)

    – Thank God the rear buttons have moved back to the left edge even with a 3″ LCD (like that on the 5D2), instead of the stup*dly unergonomic location on the 40D/50D where the buttons are all located on the bottom edge of the body.

    – the rear control dial has been lowered to make it easier to use while using the camera with the vertical grip and held in portrait orientation.

    – “JPEG anger quality of photometry has been improved tremendously for great justice” according to the spec sheet

  • Or maybe a double print button! You only have to push it once, but you’ll get 2 prints! That is TWICE as good as before!

  • It’s same button as appears on rebels, and its not a button but infra-red sensor.

Can’t see how it can be flash master as flash master suppose to be active even when you holding the camera.

btw, isn’t infra-red flash master suppose to be big enough to see in front of camera?

  • Really? Well golly! a camera that is a year newer and a xD series and its better than a 50D? no way!

  • EPIC FAIL!!!!

why not 12 MP and better high iso?
why on earth they put 18MP on APS-C?
They must be crazy! I think that the CANON management lives
    on another planet.

  • This camera has brilliant specifications. I am one of the d300s potential buyers, and this sounds right up my alley.

That being said, I am very concerned about 18mp?

  • you get that wrong because there is no point of double print button. But canon can consider 1 button for draft print and 1 button for final print.

  • Whooppeeee. Its got a flash… and it thus 120% perfect for me! I can’t actually think of a feature that I would have added if I had to design the camera myself. My 30D will become my second body… hopefully before the end of November…

Just a pity the 100mm now has the little L next to it. The old one was an L, just not with a L-class price tag. Any rumours about its price tag?

  • Cool, thanks! It’s been a while since I spent any time with a rebel, much less a newer one.

  • ***Body Design Changes, plus 15-85mm lens***
(as seen in the latest leaked photo)

    – ON/OFF power switch is moved to the top left corner below shooting-mode dial, exactly the same as earlier leaked top-plate pic showed; now the switch below main-dial only controls the on/off of the dial. [kudos! imagine you will probably choose your shooting mode right after turning on the camera, why not put them together and set it with 1 hand.]

    – NEW switch/button above the joystick: to switch between LiveView and video-capture mode, as well as start/stop video capture. [double kudos! great decision, now we don’t need left hand to turn on LiveView and then move right thumb down to find the ‘SET’ button in order to start recording!]

-> EF-S 15-85/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens has 72mm front thread, same as good old 28-135, between 17-85 (67mm) and 17-55/2.8 (77mm). This lens should become Canon’s new ‘mid-level standard lens’ for APS-C cameras. I guess it’ll be priced between 17-85 (US$450) and 117-55 (US$1050), US$800? For the 24mm equiv. ultra-wide angle, the range is definitely more versatile than 17-55. The only question is the image quality – how much better will it be above the ‘average’ 17-85. One thing for sure is that it’ll have the latest 4-stop IS system to counter the small aperture at long-end (F5.6 is really too small these days).

  • – IS + Hybrid IS

    – UD lens

    – 9 aparture blade

    – Internal focus , ring USM

    – Full time manual focus

  • Macro Translation (Correct me if I am wrong)
    1. Tilt stabilizer and Macro special mode Parallel Movement stabilizer Dual mode IS
    2. UD Glass
    3. 9 round aperture blade
    4. Internal focus + Ring type USM for fast silent AF
    5. Full time manual focus
    67mm filter
    netweight 625g

  • we already know what the d300s can do, the 7d is still a mystery, we will see on sept 1 what this camera can do.
At least canon acknowledges that there is a pro APS-C market out there. A little to late if you ask me, since FF is becoming more affordable (5D , Nikon d700)

  • Why is it lame? Hi-ISO noise isn’t the be all and end all of digital photography despite every anal idiot on every forum obsessing about it.
If Canon can maintain the 40D performance and nearly double the pixel count, I for one will be seriously impressed.

  • have any one noticed that the 100mm got an L upgrade? that means that its not an upgrade to the current 100mm but an additional lens to the line.

  • Well if you are a sports shooter doing night events then high ISO is a must as well as wedding photography.

  • I’m also dubious but with FF getting higher resolution, it kinda makes sense. The ability to do wildlife photography and be able to bring 18mp to bear on a subject is quite something.
I have my doubts on the sensor but if its clean up to 1600ISO, I’d be happy enough. The birders will be well pleased.

  • 100/2.8L Macro:

    1) Dual IS(tilt and shift)

    2) UD glass for less diffraction

    3) 9-piece round shape aperture

    4) Internal Focus, ring USM and optimized algorithm achieving fast and quiet focus

    5) full time manual focus

    weight: 625 gram (excluding accesories)

    filter size: 67 mm

    size: 77.7 x 123 mm

  • What? No point in a double print button?? Having two pictures is twice as good as having one! And you only have to press it once, which means halved effort, therefore I correct myself, it is FOUR times as good as before (half the effort and twice as good)!
    Nobody would buy nikon anymore!

  • The DP button persists thanks to cross marketing. Canon, you guys may have noticed, makes a lot of printers built especially for direct from camera printing. That’s why they keep the button around. That’s why it’s on all the consumer cameras. They’re imaging you being able to shoot an event and print with one of their location printers and by pass the computers. It’s jut to support the printers.

  • This is only a rumor

Rumor has it that the sensor will be APS-H (1.3 CF), and automatically switch to APS-C (1.6 CF) when an EF-S lens is mounted.

  • As much as I love my 5D; I think the autofocus alone is worth it for wildlife photography; especially birds where a crop factor is a benefit. Not to mention how much more you can crop with the higher resolution. I have been less than thrilled with the autofocus on both my 5D and 40D. This will most likely be my next back up camera, still love the 5D as an everyday camera. If this thing can produce similar noise to ISO ratios as my 5D then I’ll be stoked!

  • By the time they show up in stores, football season will be mostly over. Look for them in November if you order on the first Day.

  • ***Latest Pricing rumor***
According to NLI, the latest rumored pricing for 7D is
    $1299 Euro for body-only
$1699 Euro for kit (probably with new 15-85 IS)

Theoretically, this translates to the SAME price in USD west of the Atlantic.
For $1.3K with all those sought-after features and plentiful 18MP resolution, it’s quite a competitive and very reasonable pricing. I was quite hesitant with the initially rumored $1.7K body-only pricing, but $1.3K, bring it on!
If that’s the case for $1.3K body, $1.7K kit, then that new 15-85IS lens is $400 with the kit, $500 alone; that’s a bit skeptical as the old ‘average’ 17-85 lens is just $450 by itself. I’m expecting 15-85 to be at least $600 lens-only.

  • I find it hard to believe that out of all the companies, canon would release such a feature rich camera for just 1700. It seems this camera will be more than 2k. Any comments?

  • The real question is what does ISO 6400 look like. My 5 D MK II looks pretty good at ISO 6400, but it has much larger photosites, same size as 8mp APS-C. !2800 and 25600 are pretty useless unless you have a photo op for a Yeti or something like that where any photo is better than none.

  • +1
and its clearly built like a toy.. the metallic sound, the shutter life, etc.. waste of the engineers time

  • the specs are almost the same as the d300s, and that one is under 2k. We are used to using the XXD, seeing a 19 point AF system for under 2k is new to us

  • If the noise is under control there will be no stopping this camera….. Nikon and Sony will be in the dust of this bad boy….

  • ofcourse it does, The Canon 50D/60D is like the Nikon D90. And I think Canon will continue to make them. The Canon 7D competes with the nikon D300s.

  • What’s the projected price for the L Macro lens? I haven’t caught up with the hundreds of posts in a while, so sorry if I missed it.

  • agree. there had been rumors that Canon wanted to phase out the xxD name to avoid ongoing confusion with Nikon D30, etc. Maybe this is what we’re seeing. Will there be no 60D????

  • “By the time they show up in stores, football season will be mostly over.”

Yeah, because only the US has sport…

  • Why the hell would you need IS on a macro lens ??
Real photography only use a tripod for macro shots

  • I agree 60D will still come out at PMA early next yr; despite there was rumors a couple of months ago that the xxD line will be discontinued and merged into 7D/xD due to the naming-confusion with decade-old D60, as well as Nikon’s D60, D90, etc.

Since 7D is only APS-C, not APS-H or FF as many of us hoped for, 60D to 50D would be just a ‘video capture upgrade’, same as D300s to D300.

Keeping 60D around US$1K and 7D at US$1.3K will separate them, but I still find $1.3K body-only price for 7D quite unbelievable. Considering D300 is still sold for $1.6K and D300s starts at $1.8K. 7D, on paper, is even better than them.

Realistically, I’m guessing 7D comes out at US$1.5K, which is quite reasonable. I would wait for price-drop if it’s over 1.5K.

  • hm looks like a big card slot on this quite small picture, so there will be cf! great news

sd wouldn’t make sense because of 18mpx with 8fps… a year to empty the buffer

  • why oh why haven’t they named it 50Ds or 60D, 1.6crop isn’t woth the xD label in my opinion:(

  • why should it be more than 2k? because its 8 fps?

no apsc camera should cost more than $1800

  • This camera will be my next purchase. The XSi will be relegated to “backup” status. Gonna get body only and a 70-200 f/4 IS and, for the time being, use my crappy 18-55 IS until I can swing the 17-55 2.8. This is gonna be fun!

  • As for the new 100 Macro; I am more than happy with the current model and see now reason to spend for IS on a macro lens. :)

  • it seems like a logical step to remove the xxD line the 500D was allready like the 50D just slower an smaller.

maybe the 600D will be even more “pro” than previous models and there will be no left space for a 60D.

  • Its at higher iso that resolution drops. Go see imaging-resource.com and compare with 50D/40D, at high iso 50D capturing LESS real detail. Not to mention I doubt most Canon lenses were designed to resolve pass 2000 lpph.

  • He didn’t say that. He just lamented his own situation. Get over your own anti-US bias. Sheesh.

  • I think (hope) this is fake.

    1) Same Eyecap as 1d3?
    2) Ugly type font on the lenses
    3) USM no more golden with stripes / in the typical writing with the design-U
    4) Printing anything on buttons is silly because that wont last long in pro usage
    5) IR-Sens in the Hand-Grip? – Do we talk about Pentax or Canon?
    6) White self-timer-LED???
    7) What picture should this be? An official release picture by Canon? I dont think so because the design is total crap
    8) DirectPrint button has no LED :D :D :D

    Please excuse my bad english…

  • Yea I know that but…

what does it change to name this 7D like a 60D, so that makes the xxD ahead of the xxxD again?

  • 9) If the screen is 3″ then the black bevel is removed, what goes along with the canon printing on the body as shown. I dont think that makes much sense…

  • Feature rich 18MP? This baby is only for bird shooters. I suspect that anything above ISO 400 will suck even worse than 50D: this is not even a sports camera, because that requires usable ISO 1600 in many situations.

  • Forget about low noise. In fact, 5DMkII achieved it by using a low CFA, which explains the better noise (compared to 1Ds) and less accurated colors, as well as (perhaps) the artifacts (banding patterns in noise at low ISOs). We are nearing the physical limits. Any increase in pixel count (specially in a few months) has necessarily tradeofs.

  • This is going to be an amazing camera…wait until the announcement…when Canon has some professional photogs singing it’s praises…wait until some samples are posted…

  • Trying to identify the button layout.

    Along left side:
    ?
    Menu
    Picture Style
    Func
    Playback
    Delete

    Going left to right now..
    Direct Print/?
Live View/Mode Mode Switch/Start Stop Button
    AF On
    * Exposure Lock
    AF Point Selection

Also has an 8 way controller, main control dial, and dedicated control dial lock since the on/off switch is moved now.

Can anyone identify what the text is on the direct print button, as well as what the mystery button above the menu button is? Looks something like the viewfinder assist button the 1D Mark II

    http://a.img-dpreview.com/reviews/CanonEOS1DMkII/Images/allroundview.jpg

    Thoughts?

  • My wondering as well… I will like to match my 5D MKII with the same battery… less stuff to carry.

  • In a move that says, “You can’t tear the megapixels out of our cold dead hands,” Canon Marketing flies the middle finger to photographers everywhere with the release of an 18MP APS-C sensor. “We don’t really care about what is necessary, realistic, what is best for photographers, or image quality, we just want to sell cameras and megapixels numbers are easy for dumb people to understand. Bigger is better, right?”

I hate you Canon and it’s official, I’m breaking up with you. The long love affair is over. You can’t hold up your end of the deal and I’m done with you. Screw you…

  • iso 3200shots from d300s looks very noisy..not any improvement over d300…and 18mp iso 3200shots from this new baby will kill d300s’s crappy iso3200 shots…

  • Correction:

    – 8fps up to 94 (NOT 84) large high-quality JPG or 15 RAW frames

The rest of the translation is good.

  • This is an exciting development, for it seems Canon will be debuting some new technological tricks up its sleeve.

I love it how some criticize the camera for poor performance without seeing one sample, without one shred of evidence.

As for me, I’ll wait and see…I believe Canon is going to give us something good.

  • Sounds like you have been cheating all this time.. with Nikon and her smooth noise reduction. With that frame rate…ewww

  • Lens info:
    – new HIS capability for macro use

  • What if Canon leaked this out just to misinform us?? Misinformation!!! Hope so. And on Sept 1st it wil be APS-H not APS-C.

  • It should be at least as good as the 40D at the pixel level, as the 50D maintained the 40D performance, but it’ll definitely be better at the image level. At least I hope so. My only concern is that the RAW buffer is only 15 frames. It won’t take too many 3-4 frame bursts to fill; I hope this thing writes really fast.

  • If the 7D is really 1299$ I think so.

I mean… look at the street price of the 500D. The street price of the 7D will be like 1000$?

  • You do not use Macro Lens foe close up only. It is an excellent general purpose lens also ( with a slightly smaller maximum aperture). So would you like to have IS on a general purpose lens????
Also are you sure that you always have a tripod ready when you see a beautiful butterfly sitting on a beautiful flower??? By the time you set up the tripod, the butterfly will be long gone. That is a real life situation for a real photographer. So let us see who is the real photographer.

  • The previous poster picture and these pictures doesn’t match!!

The rear of the camera is too ugly to be true!

  • According to DXOMark data, the 5D2 sensor is nearly identical to the 1Ds3 in terms of color sensitivity and SNR. In fact, dynamic range at high ISO is improved. Non uniform color sensitivity has ALWAYS been Canon’s Archille’s heel. This is NOT a new problem or Canon.

Nearing physical limits??? 21 MP FF is about 8 MP APS-C which is ~ the 20D sensor. There is still a LONG way to go.

  • I don’t see any good reason to move from the 50D besides the new AF. And that would cost US$600.00 more!!

Only if ISO6400 is really usable…

  • That’s my gut feeling too.

Either that or Canon is trying to eek out a new camera line to compete against the D90. The 500D is more leveled at the D5000 in terms of size/weight. Not a bad move actually.

  • I LIKE IT!. Ehhh….honey, Canon has a new camera com………. Here she interupted me and said NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  • Those of you going on about the DP button time after time, some pros use it with Selphy printers on location. Great if your client’s staff is breathing over your shoulder.

  • Aero-dynamic body design?

I think “超流线型机身设计” should be “super stream-lined body design”. The “super” can be omitted here.

    BTW: I’m a Chinese.

  • I am already using the Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS and 70-200 f/4 IS together with XSi. :) Superb combo.

  • I would love an APS-C with same noise level as a FF, but Canon will never do this because would lower sales of FF cameras. That’s marketing :-(
I expect to see new FF (1DsIV) with 30-35 MP and same noise level as 5DII…

  • I “know” this sucker’ll be announced in 3 days … but does anyone have any idea of availability? I’d love to get this, but I would need it NO LATER THAN SEPT 16 … otherwise I’ll be renting a 5DII for a wedding 3 days later.

  • Not funny.. I was trying to be serious… on other cameras like the 50d the direct print button has been delegated two functions (albeit it seems the live view function has been moved to its own button now).. my assumption is maybe this is the case here too.

  • Other useful D300s features lacking in 7D:

    – in-camera CA correction
    – master flash
    – adjustable spot metering size
    – color tracking

But I guess those features are reserved for 7D Mk2… Goes to show how far Canon is lagging behind.

  • Canon agrees to have placed a weaker CFA:

    http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1032&message=30030535

This means that more light enters, but colors are not so well separated. If you apply the same workflow, the noise is of course lower to 1Ds:

    http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1032&message=30279489

But note that this is not for free. This is how colors render when marketing places noise over quality (this blog compares 5D2 witk D3x, but we hopefully hope 1Ds to be more close to D3x than 5D2):

    http://diglloyd.com/diglloyd/2009-01-blog.html#_20090126D3x_vs_5DM2

  • If the 15mp 50D already had a free 1.4x converter built in, what does that mean for this beast?. A free 1.6-1.8x converter?.

  • I like to see pictures of the camera with vertical grip. I’m curious if Canon has come up with a better design.

  • maybe because of the D60 like somebody mentioned above, or just because they want to reset the game versus nikons 300Ds. it gives you the feeling this is a completely new camera and it maybe gets some of the 5D’s fame for beeing a xD canon

  • Looks very promising, but haven’t seen anything about the autofocus limits. The “1” series cameras will autofocus at f/8 while all lesser cameras require f/5.6. For bird photography and long lenses and multipliers f/8 is sometimes needed to get the shot.

  • Man, this is one awesome announement. I was hoping for the 60D soon for it’s shallow depth of field HD movie mode and Canon did me one better, the 7D with uberer awesomer features.

Also, I was keen on the 100mm macro as a general use + macro lens but I was dissapointed it didn’t have IS. Canon did me one better here too with a uber awesome IS and an L designation. I’m going to have to buy both now, there’s no question.

On a completely in-related matter, does anyone want to buy a kidney?

  • Woot! They’ve upgraded the 40D’s X Type Center AF Point.

If this is really @ $1.3k This will be my next camera! I can forget about full frame. No one pays me enough for photography work yet to justify buying a FF camera. :)

  • I’d be surprised if the street price is less than $1k. The existing 100mm Macro is $650.

  • Assuming the specification is real, it is an DSLR with very good feature. The only concern is noise and huge file size for me. So let us wait to see some reliable test report and decide how good or bad the noise is. As for large file, if I do not need the super high resolution, I can always drop it down to 10 or 12 mp. If I do not like the noise result ,I am going to send my 20D to Canon to have the shutter release button to be replace and wait for another year or two.

  • +1 anyone who’s tried to photograph a something that moves around (but occasionally stays still, ie butterflies etc. I say this because IS won’t help much if the subject is moving, BUT it will help you keep steady without using a tripod so much, so you’re free to move around and “hunt” insects etc. more) object with a macro lens knows how great IS (especially if the hybrid-IS words well) is for a macro lens.

  • There are many event photographers who are really not pros, but sell $5.00 snapshots at proms, festivals, etc. They take a photo, check it, and print a 4X6 snapshot that is excellent quality. They want to do this as fast as possible to rake in the $5.00 bills.

More serious photographers have a better solution, but I’ve seen a lot od users do this with a direct print button. I’ve never tried it.

  • Are you talking about the APS-C 1.6x crop factor designation? In which case the 7D will be the same.

  • Improvement in any one component of your dslr system will improve the net output but cannot be better than the weakest link. Generally, Canon lenses are very sharp and improvement of the camera will provide a sharper image. As long as the noise is low, more mp is better.

The 5D MK II has the equivalent pixel density to a 8mp crop camera like the 20D, yet we here complainers saying it has too many pixels.

  • I doubt it as well, the price will go up. It will be priced exactly the same as a D300S, or maybe $100 less.

  • noise shall be the new bokeh!!!!!1!!eleven!!!111!!!!1!!!!11!!!!1!!!one!!!!!!!onehundredandeleven!!

  • Hopefully, it will take both. I like CF, but it is definitely on its way out. SD is plenty fast enough, with 30 mb/sec cards readily available. I’ve tried to find CF in local stores, ask them and they just look at you kinda funny. They do not even believe it is made any more.

So, I will use CF when I can, but if I get in a bind and need more memory quickly (I’ve forgotton and left my memory at home once), it would be good to be able to pop into Walmart and buy some SD memory for the emergency.

  • you are right sportey, people too much obsessing about high iso, because the media favour to Nikon, because only high iso performance canon 50d , slight under to canon 40d,50d became the bad camera, and idiot just talking bad camera 4 50d, worst!. worst camera!!! than 40d. is anal idiot just talking even without trying it,I got 40d and got 50d using L lens , high iso is indentical very close between them even 50d got 50%more pixel, is not all about high iso, sold 40d, keep 50d is better camera with a lot more new feature and advantage which not many talking is plus point,
nt many talking bad about high iso Nikon d3x, when canon 5dMK II released, many idiot and media just talking it, slow camera, so what?,it’s not designed for sport camera, video, who want video?just see when pro Nikon camera having video such replacing D700,D3, and thy say will video is a good point and bla bla, bla, how about Nikon D3x . 3x time more expensive than canon 5d, but slow also, and high iso performance worst than nikon D3 which is 2x cheaper, but hardly see any idiot/review talking bad about this camera, slow and bad high iso performance and look the price tag, it’s overprice, picture quality from 3x cheaper canon 5dMK II , only slight below than Nikon D3X,most review from magazines just talking positive for this camera ( Nikon),

  • Yeah, but there is still no 100% conformation about 7D being master commander for off camera flashes. There is no talk about weather sealing, no mentioning about dual memory card compartments… All of which the D300s has.

Plus the back end seems funny, the LCD doesn t look like a 3 inch to me. And those 18mp on an APS-C are still something to worry about. I just hope they can prove us wrong.

  • Each camera maker has their own features that others may not have. Pick the one that comes closest to what you need. If all of them were identical there would be no competition.

  • It looks to be about added features. I doubt too that we will see a noticible IQ improvement, but lower high ISO noise would be a plus. Canon seems to be aware that this is a selling feature, and I expect they put more effort and attention to it. Still, at 18mp, it seems unlikely that high ISO noise will be any kind of a breakthru.

Still, i plan to order one the first day, as soon as Adorama will take my order.

  • The Chinese spec summary says LCD type II. No mention of what type of LCD. The Box picture is too to read.

  • A lot more affordable – Sony A850! Unfortunately, sony does not allow retailers to offer heavy discounts, so it will sell for close to full MSRP.

  • I haven’t heard a rumor about price, but typically, expect $500 added for the IS and “L” designation at a minumum. I wouldn’t be suprised if it cost $1200 or even a little more. I’m hoping, of course for more like $800.

  • What’s with all the hate for crop sensors? 95% of cameras out there are crop and you’re saying FF are the only decent cameras? The worst part is, I’m sure most people who say that wouldn’t even be able to max out the capabilities of a rebel, and yet they need a FF.

I’ve seen people do amazing things with 10D’s and 20D’s and rebels. If you want FF get a 5D or a 1D and stop whining

  • Dunno what’s wrong with aps-c, especially when you can get gorgeous lenses like the 10-22 for it, at a resolution close to ff, and a sensor that only uses the sweet spot of any L glass you care to throw at it. FF costs a LOT extra compared to a lot of other features and for me, it’s not worth it.

  • Usually, about 4 weeks, more or less, but if there are a huge number of orders, it will still be hard to get by Christmas. I do not think it will see near the demand of the 5D MK II, but Canon had to look into a crystal ball and forcast a poduction rate, and then order long lead parts some time ago. Production can’t speed up significantly over the planned rate for several months in the event that orders flood in. There is always a big rush initially, if it is sustained, we will see shortages.

I sold my 40D 2 weeks ago, along with my 1D MK II, so the money is in the bank waiting to buy this one. I kept my 17-55mm lens, planing on buying the new crop camera if it was good, or buying another used 40D if it wasn’t.

  • I guess this is what Canon has been planning, looking at those specs it seems that this camera is more towards outdoor photography for birds/macro/wild life type photographer.

    Not for event for Indoor.

  • Well you could change the focus screens if you want a brighter one – so I am not too concerned.

  • Notice the dark spot on the grip? Could it be an active element that turns the camera on when it’s held, perhaps?

  • By the way, I have been thinking since Canon was saying that this is a new Sensor. just wonder if you are able to set the number of MP manually on this sensor just like sRAW but this one is actually changing the Number of MP used on the actual sensor, if it can then this is worth investing hehe..

18MP is the max then 9MP then 4.5MP (Different than sRAW where it resize the actualy picture size than changing the actual Sensor MP)

  • I agree 100%, however don’t under estimate Canon to suprise their customers. The original Rebel was announced and available for purchase (in stock) 2 weeks later. I have seen Point of Purchase material i.e. posters etc for the 7D already.

  • Excellent Translation. For me the 3 dimensional electronic level sounds like a marketing gimmick. If you level the X direction and the Y direction, the Z direction will be leveled ( perfect vertical) automatically. So for me 2 dimension is enough. Are they doing a ‘time wrap’ with the third dimension????

  • Why not indoor??? High ISO (assuming good noise) is good for indoor with out flash or you can have very long reach with flash. Fast frame rate in good for catching expression of people. Flash master is good for controlling your 580EX II indoor or outdoor.I cannot name a feature of the 7D that is against indoor. Please educate me.

  • You’re right of course.

Can’t imagine a camera flying in the air with its ‘aerodynamic’ body design. LOL

  • Canon still lags Nikon by a mile.

    Still no in-camera CA correction?

What about adjustable spot size tied to individual focus points?

However, if the sensor is superb with improved dynamic range at low ISO and lacks chroma noise, then all is forgiven. Somewhat skeptical though…

  • Well since the x, y and z axes are mutually perpendicular… so ya, more marketing talk. :)

  • Looks a bit hefty, no? I’m pumped about the revolutionary aerodynamic body. Perfect for skydiving ;-)

  • Canon EOS 7D: The perfect camera for retarded professionals.

This one’s gonna fly off the shelves.

  • I just cannot see people keep on putting down the APS-C sensor. The only advance of the FF is that teach pixel is larger and the potential noise level is lower at high ISO. Also it has a potential of better resolution. but let us be honest to our self, Do we really need 21 mp picture?? 4 mp is good enough for 8X10 for display. If you need to crop half of the image to make a picture, you need to be more careful in framing. How often do you need to shoot in extreme low light. Before 50D, APS-C is 10mp and with reasonable noise level up to ISO 3200. That will fit more than 95% of the need for the owners of the ASP-C which is the majority of DSLR ownership.

let me point out some of the draw back for Full Frame:
Camera is bigger and heavier and a lot more expensive.
You need very good lens to make full usage of the FF. Even canon L lens will have image problem on 4 corners, just a matter of degree.
21 mp will have a huge file size compare to the 12 mp.

    Advantage of APS-C:
Camera are lighter, smaller and generally less expensive
Very good lens are still needed to get good resolution with corner to corner sharp picture.
    File size is reasonable.

Necessity for both format: get the best lens you can get.

Actually, I am not a defender of the APS-C. I just cannot see why APS-C has constantly being put down without any reason given in this site. Personally, If I have a choice I go for APS-H. That will be a good compromise and get the best of both world. I hope Canon will coms up with a reasonable price APS-H camera soon

  • I don’t think so… I think there’s plenty of room between the 500D and the 7D… my guess is the 60D will be targeted more towards enthusiasts now, like the Nikon D90.

  • What a disappointment! I can’t believe it, I’ve been waiting with a great hope that Canon will wake up one day and realize that they are losing major market share and will release “killer” camera.

All of the specs don’t mean a jack to me as a professional photographer. If it is not FF camera then everything is a waste. Yes, the technology will eventfully trickle down (or up) to 5D MK3 and 1DsMK4 but by this time Nikon and Sony will come up with far better and more advanced cameras.

That’s it I am officially leaving Canon and selling all of my pro bodies and lenses, anybody interested in buying them?!

  • I agree. I think that there are basically two different markets, those who want it to be a D700 competitor and those who want it to be a D300 competitor. Maybe the D700 competitor will come next year?

For me, I like crop sensors because it gives a 70-200 has an effective focal length of 112-320 f/2.8. With a 1.4 extender, it’s a 157-448 f/4. A 400 lens becomes a 640. OK, so you can crop in post, but that’s not ideal and most people dislike cropping in post unless they really have to. Pro’s maybe able to justify 500 and 600mm lenses, but most enthusiastic amateurs can’t, both from a price and size point of view. Saying that, I can see wildlife photographers also sticking 500’s and 600’s on this body.

Also, on certain subjects, it allows people to shoot f/1.2 or f/1.4 primes about 1-1/2 stops wider open than on a full frame, without making the DOF too narrow, which is handy in low light.

So, this camera sounds great for enthusiastic amateurs as a ‘do-it-all’ camera, particularly people who like photographing nature, birds, aviation, sporting events, etc. but don’t want to lug a 1 series body around with them when on holiday, at a friends party, etc. Hopefully, the AF system will have focus points in good locations and also contain the AF custom functions that the 1 series have.

If the specs are true, IMO it sounds like the most exiting thing to come out of the Canon camp since the 20D, 5D, 1D-II days, but different people, different needs.

Still, as this is just rumors, time will tell particularly when it comes to noise, banding, etc.

  • What about AEB-stops. I hope it will have more than the three stops the 40D and 50D have. Perfect for HDR! At least 5 stops Canon!

  • I love the new lens! But I wonder how much it would cost with the new IS system! Anyway I want it!!!

  • Foveon is the only sensor that you can group individual pixel ( to make it larger) to change the actual mp of the sensor. It is not used by Canon.

  • So you were expecting something better then the 5DII (what’s wrong with that by the way?) in a camera that was clearly aimed at a cheaper market (thus the higher number)?

  • The 7D, I don’t know whether to love it or hate it. I did want so much for this to be a slimmed down 5DII with faster AF and FPS, Canon shooters have been screaming for this body. It’s incredible to think Canon still doesn’t currently offer a FF camera that is less than 21MP. Will we ever see a fast FF lite? Canon had a tremendous success with the classic 5D, I’m hanging on to my twins because Canon still hasn’t given me a good enough reason to upgrade. I think what leaves me unimpressed with the 7D is that there is apparently no selling points on the chassis, so you have to wonder what’s under the hood, and if it’s geared for serious photographers. I hope I’m wrong, but the 7D looks less like a 5D and more like a Rebel on steroids.

On another note the 100 L IS Macro looks sweet, that’s why I love Canon, for their glass.

  • If 7D is a crop sensor… canon will lose alot of money this time, a very no no for aps-c… yes yes for fullframe!

  • Canon isn’t making profit from they ff cameras, they are doing it with they crop body’s. Professional cameras are just one small part.

  • Just playing devils advocate but the diffrence when looking through the viewfinder of a ff compared to a crop is huge. The extra area makes a big difference.

Not big enough however for me to justify the cost of a ff.

  • weatherseals are only in 1 series. canon will never bring it to crop bodies or 5d price brackets

  • No offense was sensed. I just trying to explain it to you at the same time try to learn something from you. In fact. it make an excellent indoor camera

  • Here is what is wrong with 5D MK2:

    1. Useless autofocus – the auto focus that is way outdated. It is only good if you are shooting in studio and in real life scenario.

    2. Who needs video – only amateurs! When you are out there shooting a wedding for the client you don’t have time to tinker with video. You either doing video or photography not both.

    3. 24 MP – that’s overkill. I shoot RAW and 12MP is more than enough. I can produce 24×36 poster portraits that are tac sharp with no problem.

    Let’s see, should I continue…!?

7D with all it specs looks to me like Ferrari car. The car has great specs and looks amazingly great on paper, but has one problem… Under the hood it has 1 cylinder scooter engine. That’s what Canon did to 7D by placing crop censor inside! They crippled it beyond recognition.

  • The point is well taken. In order to have enough eye relief for glasses wearer like me. The camera maker cannot put enough magnification in the view finder to compensate for the 1.6 crop of the lens and we end up with a smaller image from the view finder. So this is definite the advantage of FF.

  • Well if you don’t want to shoot video or shoot at maximum resolution then guess what?

So your only real gripe is the Auto Focus which you admit is good in studios and real life scenarios (what else is there?).

I don’t get your analogy either, Ferrari make amazing engines.

  • What do you think the chances are the center point is more sensitive. Like f/5.6 or better yet f/8?

  • He is getting at that 18MP is a lot higher density than 10MP on the same size sensor, so given a sharp enough lens, it is like a free built-in TC (without loss of stop of light or AF speed) compared to say a 40D or 20D.

  • Please explain to me why you have to have FF and crop sensor is so bad. I am really curious.

  • I’m looking forward to the preview on DPR. I’m sure they already have one to try out.

  • noobs are the ones that think sensor size is the sole dictate of a photographer’s interest and ability

  • “Please explain to me why you have to have FF and crop sensor is so bad”

    is this is serious question?

  • APS-C… I’m disappointed beyond belief. Canon finally comes out with a decent feature set and it’s APS-C. That total BS.

  • I need some advice…. I am leaving for a trip sept 4th to see the grand canyon, sequoia, and Yosemite. I have an old 300d that I would like to upgrade before I go because I don’t know how many times in my lifetime I will be able to go back to the parks. A couple of weeks ago I had my mind made up on the 50d but now I see the 7d and don’t know what to do. Would it be foolish to buy a 50d at this point? Is the 50d really that bad?

I am very torn on the decision to buy and was even thinking of renting something to take on my vacation (i hate renting)

    Any Feedback?

  • I said the same thing for years!!

    I didn’t realize the difference until I upgaded to a 5d2 (from a 40d/50d)

The dynamic range is what shocked me, along with the clean ISO 6400!! There is definitily something ‘magical’ about the 5d2. The DOF is also a huge improvement (f4 lens will have the same dof/bokeh as a 2.8 on a crop).. Not to mention how great 1.2 looks on FF

  • that ain’t the 7D. there no switch button on the top left hand corner like previously rumoured.

  • When I take my 40D out of the bag, it will sometimes change the mode dial and I will not notice it. With the 7D you have to look at the dial to turn it on. Big plus for me.
As for the 18MP, have any one of you been disappointed in the noise level of any xD camera and what makes you think this one will be any different?

  • +1
I use 50d with 24-70L and 40d for 70-200L on weddings and parties. Perfect combo and photos turn out excellent. Not to mention the fast frame rate. So does having a 5dmk2 make u a pro? I don’t need video cause event planners have video suppliers.

  • I agreed with this when they had color metering and a better AF system, but the issues you raised here are certainly less “ahead by a mile” than you suggest, at least, in my opinion.

  • What is so disappointing? If I get the 7d it will compliment my canon arsenal when I shoot events. Have u ever tried shooting apsc with L lenses? I guarantee u won’t know the differnce when printed on 8×11. Clients don’t complain about sensor size. Noobs do…

  • The viewfinder included on this camera seems to be the highest quality viewfinder canon has released for APS-C so far, in that it is a 100% FOV. They haven’t released the magnification or eyepoint, but I think it’s safe to assume the viewfinder will also be at least a little larger and better overall than the 50d’s.

I have to say, the difference between the 50d and 5D’s viewfinder size is small, and this viewfinder will make that difference even smaller, if my assumptions are correct.

The 1Ds Mark III’s viewfinder, however, is a completely different story…

  • Um, Yes there is?

You’re talking about the on/off switch, no? It’s right there, attached to the mode dial.

Note how there would normally be an on/off attached to the main dial on the back, but instead it says “lock” to lock down the mail dial.

  • Guess you’ll be waiting for the 5D III. Canon can’t make enough 5D II’s though, so you’ll probably be waiting a bit.

Not everyone wants a FF camera, you know….

  • 50d is a good all around cam. If u really want to invest get a good L lens. Or efs 10-22 for landscapes. The cam body isn’t really a big factor in producing great photos. Research your locations to visit and learn to have a good eye for composition. Good luck!

  • Anyone have any idea what the button below the mode dial does? (Above the menu button, to the left of direct print).

    Activates the horizon level, maybe?

  • Thanks for your feedback…

I actually have a 17-40 L lens that i bought 3 years ago. I was actually going to upgade my camera at that time but decided on the lens instead.

I guess I am like the others out there… I get sucked into thinking that I need the latest and greatest. I guess that is marketing for ya!!

I will probably put my order in tomorrow for the 50d.

    Thanks again.

  • As I said in my comment, FF does have lower noise for High ISO. But how many people will use 3200 or 6400 most of the time?? The view finder in FF is definitely an advantage. However, I respectfully disagree about the DOF. In a Crop sensor, the camera “magnify the focal length by 1.6 and decrease the DOF accordingly. eg. 50mm lens mounted on a 1.6 crop sensor body will become a 80mm lens. So the DOF will be that of a 80mm,not 50mm anymore. I think you statement just says the opposite.

  • IGOR,

I always ask this kind of people who bash the 5Dmkii : Do you actually own the camera and having it used it for more than 5000 frames worth of shooting ?

99% of the time they “just heard it from a friend” or “over the net” .. And have absolutely no more than 10 shots of shooting with the camera at all.

You sound like one of those.

Categorically, its a very capable camera for sports ( which is extremely demanding on AF ) if you use it right. If you have never seen or tried what the video is capable of achieving, then you have no right to say you don’t need. You just believe that you don’t.

Let’s see, 24×36 poster from 12mp ? You’re talking in terms of centimeters or inches here ? Because if its in ‘inches’ I’ve never seen a 118dpi print which I can consider to be sharp.

  • Two words: Wide-Angle. I do a lot of landscape panoramas, and I’m also an astrophotographer. If I don’t want EF-S glass, then I’m limited to a 14mm -> 22.4mm $2k lens, or the 17-xx mm -> 27.2-xx mm lens. Even the EF-S 10-20mm is only a 16-32 mm lens on an APS-C sensor.

Now, granted, I can do stitching, which I do do for landscapes, but if I want an ultra-wide shot of the sky, I’m SOL on an APS-C body.

  • If there is nothing wrong with your 300d, just keep it for a while. Use the money to buy a good lens. My choice is the 17-40mm F4 L lens (about $760) this will give you equivalent of 27 mm to 64mm. This is a good general use lens, from scenery to group picture and half body portrait. . I have it for more than 4 years with my 20D. this lens is not for telephoto lens fan.

  • I took my rebel xti down there and got some amazing shots with my tamron 17-50 2.8. On the summits of yosemite I stood in one place and took about 12 pics, then stitched them together in photoshop cs3…they look amazing! Would have been easier with a 10-22 mind you.

My advice is to enjoy yourself down there – chances are that Ansel Adams already took a picture of where you are going, so just buy a print of that! :-) Enjoy your trip, its a beautiful part of the world.

  • Mac Dee, Right on. Just as I mention before, as long as you put a L lens on a APS-C body, you can not tell the different on 8 X 10 or even 16 X 12. In fact you can have better corner sharpness than the full frame, due to the nature of the lens, not the camera.

  • Point taken. However, not every body wants to use lens shorter than 28mm (equivalent). If they do, there is 10-20mm EF-S. there is nothing wrong to do that. Anything shorter than 24mm is over $1000 anyway. if you won a APS-C body, then use EF-S len (If you have to). I am using a 17 -40 mm on APS-C body, I am happy with it. Just out of curiosity, how often do you use anything shorter then 24mm on your full frame ?

  • “not wanting EF-S glass” is stupid. The 10-22 is a fine lens, and any person who avoids it because of the label and lack of a red ring is arrogant, ignorant, and cares more about their gear than their photos.

  • Forgot to mention, would be interesting to find out on 1 September if Canon have improved the Auto ISO on this body too. Either like Nikons where the user can set parameters, better still the following:

    1) The ability for the user to set the maximum ISO it can use.

    2) I quite like the idea of the Canon system attempting to maintain a minimum shutter speed of 1/focal length, as opposed to just using a static minimum shutter speed like the Nikon system, but it would be better if there was an option for the user to set auto ISO compensation. So, for example, if you are shooting slow moving subjects and you are quite steady with a camera (or maybe using a monopod), you could dial in an auto ISO compensation of -3 stops, so that instead of the camera choosing a minimum shutter speed of 1/320 @ 300mm, it would select 1/40. On the other hand, if for example you are shooting fast moving subjects, you could dial in an auto ISO compensation of +3 stops, so that instead of the camera choosing a minimum shutter speed of 1/320 @ 300mm, it would select 1/2500.

    3) Intelligent to take Image Stabilized lenses into consideration when working out minimum shutter speeds.

  • you are right 100% , many idiot comment like this, 99% of the time they “just heard it from a friend who r nikon fanboys” or “over the net, his comments, such useless autofocus?? or who need the video?24MP? come on it’s 21MP. not 24!!! u will see even pro camera will have video ,so whatever his comment or other stupid comments , Canon 5d MK II r selling very well, it’s not designed for sport , Canon knows how to sell their camera,

  • Thanks for the flame. First, I said “IF” one doesn’t want EF-S glass. Second, if one does plan on having FF cameras, then buying EF-S lenses actually is a waste of money. Third, having EF lenses over EF-S has nothing to do with limiting oneself to “L” glass.

  • I actually don’t have a FF camera. But I do plan on having one in the future. At the moment, I just do stitching on panoramas for landscapes and just limit astrophotography to fields I can do.

  • I have to agree with this.

Isn’t a DSLR supposed to be used to take photos?

what’s the point of a video? A camera is a machine that takes photos. A camcorder is used to take videos.

i know this has full hd. but i think a camcorder and a camera does its job better seperately than a… cameracorder. haha.

and even though u have a video recording system. its not like you can hold the camera still for 1 hour. u’ll probably going to get a cramp before the 10 minute line, especially if its a long range thing. with 400mm f/4 L? no way. you’ll probably have to be a body builder to survive

  • Yes, i agree… Crop sensor is for newbies. you want to be serious in photography get yourself a full frame (:

  • Yes but this appears to have a live view start stop button to the very right of the viewfinder.. it also seems to have a swtich above it that changes modes between stills and video.

  • This camera is in every way superior to the 5D Mark II but the sensor, at probably $1000 less.

I don’t agree that in order to do serious photography you have to shoot full frame.

If that were true, 4/3s would have died out long ago, and compacts would start having larger sensors.

FF is better, for sure, but that’s only the case for people who are paid well enough that the advantages of FF mean the difference between getting a paycheck and not.

But to say that the Canon 40/50D and Nikon D200/D300 is for “newbies” who are not serious into photography is just wrong.

  • “12. Aero-dynamic body design, metallic shutter sound, 150K shutter life”

This feature is really important to me and I’m immensely relieved that Canon has seen fit to include it.

  • hmmm. I don’t know what to do. I want the features of this body, but also want full-frame for the best compatibility with the L-series lenses.

I currently have a 10-22mm and the 17-55mm and the 17-55mm is filled with dust – very disappointing. I want to step up to the 24-70mm f/2.8 for the weather sealing (or rumored 24-105mm f/2.8), but 24mm is not wide enough on a cropped-sensor body for a standard zoom.

I wish they were announcing a 5DmarkIII at the same time as this!

If canon are going to commit seriously to APS-C like it looks like they are doing with this body, then they really need L-series wide zoom (10-22mm – lets make it f/2.8!), L-series SEALED standard zoom (17-55mm, or even better 17-70mm f/2.8) and tune the next 70-200mm f/2.8 to work even better with APS-C.

    And then the jewel in the APS-C crown – a tac-sharp 35mm f/1.4mm specifically for APS-C.

If canon had better lenses for APS-C then I would commit to it. Seeing as though they don’t, then I’ll probably just wait until 5DmarkIII.

  • US bashing is an international sport, and you guys even do pretty well in it yourselves, you just don’t know it. :)

  • I haven’t had this problem with my 17-55… but hear it come up all the time.. sucks hard!

I doubt canon would be able to create a 17-70.. maybe a 15-55? The optical design is large already.. I would think it would be difficult to increase the FL without increasing the size beyond what is reasonable.

I would think if they wanted a normal, it would be a 31 or 32mm, f/1.4.

I do doubt any L-Series EF-S lenses though, judging by the price and build of the 17-55.

You can rectify the 10-22.. I went for a tokina 11-16 f/2.8, that is a fantastic UWA lens for crop bodies.

  • 150k shutter life is actually great to hear.. they made the life of the camera 50% more in the span of one year.

  • Even if the noise on this 7D is better than 50D, I am disappointed. They could do a much better 12MP than slighty better 18MP.
And i bet that over 95% photographers would preffer the 12MP much better variant.
So, i call this an EPIC FAIL of the canon Management…

  • STFU. Stop panning a product you don’t know anything about. Obsessing about how 12MP is the perfect resolution is as stupid as obsessing that more pixels == better. shut up about pixel count and look at the images it produces.

What’s that? No one’s seem any images it produces because it hasn’t shipped yet? Then kindly shut the F up and wait.

I bet that 95% of good photographers don’t care about MP count one way or the other… notice I said “good” photographers.

  • They built a D30 and a 30D, and two other cameras with names identical or similar to competitors’ products (5D and 50D). They’ve not suddenly decided that a 60D would be confusingly similar to the D60.

  • I bet that 95% of good photographers care about MP count if less MP means more IQ.

And everywhere in the world, 10 to 12 MP would be much more better than 18MP, using the same sensor thechnology.

  • This is going to be a difficult choice. Good image quality (5D) or good AF (7D)… Can’t have them both with Canon.

  • SD can be great because you can buy them from almost anywhere. they are great for travel. I have a CF SD converter that I use with my current SLRs and they work great. Howerver, having an SD slot built into the body would be a great help.

  • 1.6, sooooo disapointed, this means Canon still doesn’t have a serious contender for the D700, or even the upcoming D700x. Nope, the 5D2 doesn’t cut it for fps or fp, nor does the build quality match up (fails in cold, not freezing, just cold weather) sooooo disapointed!!!

  • Alan dannyROD – yeah you guys are right. If they come out with a prime for APS-C then it’d probably want to be wider than 35mm. I am just copying the Nikon 35mm. I think the 25-30mm mark would be ideal – whatever can give me head and shoulder shots across a small bar table would be good.

  • Unless canon have re-written the laws of physics, then 18MP is going to be noisier than 12MP. I’d take less noise over more MP and bigger file sizes clogging up my HDD, any day of the week.

The only time I can see it being useful is if I have to crop right down, but I generally have the right lens for the job so don’t do a lot of cropping – mostly loose crops for correct framing and rarely any tight crops.

Anyways, the noise is only really visible at ISO 400 and above on my 450D, and is only annoying at ISO 1600 and some ISO 800 shots. If they can get noise at ISO 400 – ISO 1600 (or even ISO 3200) down to acceptable levels then hell – I’ll treat the extra MP as a bonus and not as a curse.

  • While a fast 5D2 would be nice, let’s not get carried. Fails in cold, not freezing, just cold?! Riiiiight. Because I only shot it with it for hours last winter when it was 18F…. and in light rain yesterday….

  • Just print it or downsample the higher ISO files before looking it at them at 100% to 12MP if it bothers you and be done with it and enjoy 18MP at ISO100….

  • Agree with you, but there are some types of photography, wedding for example, where you would be more than happy with a good iso 6400 at 10-12MP instead of good 3200 at 18MP.

  • I hear you, Gavin . . . anything 30 or below and 1.4 would be just swell with me! I just might pick up that Sigma 30, actually!

  • I won’t be surprised if Canon indeed come up with an all-new three-dimensional electronic level, it sort of make sense with the new face-detection, iFCL metering & hybrid IS.

  • Only if you buy Canon’s new printer, the 7D8FPS Super-wondo Printomatic.

    (Proof of 7D purchase necessary)

  • I’ve heard the 500D (Rebel T1i) has better high ISO performance than the 450D, even though it is 15MP vs the 450D’s 12MP. Has anyone here compared them in real life?

  • I think with the a 15 frame buffer, and the ability to shoot at 8FPS the extra bandwidth provided by a UDMA CF card will be very important.

  • Hell, I shot at down to -14C (7F) in Canada during February-March with a 450D/Rebel XSi and had absolutely no problems. The only issue was if I would go into a warm building without storing the camera in its bag with the zipper close. That would cause the lens to fog up, of course. Other than that, it performed flawlessly. If anything, the only issue with the 450D and cold weather is that it’ll keep working even when your fingers can no longer keep up with the cold.

  • Yes, is that supposed to be a good thing? Does that mean they’ve engineered the plastic to sound like metal? Cos if it actually was metal, wouldn’t you just write “metal shtter”?

  • This is from http://www.northlight-images.co.uk

I hope the 24p is true, but the 60 fps kind of makes me think it’s not. It is interesting though.

We were sent this a few weeks ago (along with a -lot- more unsourced comments)

“7D is Pro-Crop, Dual DIGIC IV, 18.2 MP CMOS, 8 FPS, 19 All cross + 26 Hidden AF Points, 3 Inch LCD, 24/25/30/60 Frames per sec FHD/HD Movie, Electronic Focus Screen, Vertical & Horizontal Electronic Level-meter, Reveal @ 2nd Sep 2009.”

In view of the similarity to what’s just appeared in rumourland, I do have to admit that if it is 18MP, then I’ll happily take back my earlier scepticism, and look forward to what comes in the 1D4 and 1Ds4 :-)

  • In your dream… go sleep now and dream on. APS-C sucks, APS-C sucks, APS-C sucks… please accept the fact APS-C is still APS-C. FullFrame is expensive because it is obviously better than APS-C.. u nuthead

  • APS-C sucks, APS-C sucks, APS-C sucks… please accept the fact APS-C is still APS-C. FullFrame is expensive because it is obviously better than APS-C

  • “Isn’t a DSLR supposed to be used to take photos?
what’s the point of a video? A camera is a machine that takes photos. A camcorder is used to take videos.”

You sound like my grandpa. Seriously, get with the times. There are many advantages to a dslr that shoots video over a camcorder, but I guess if you don’t know then you don’t know.

  • I was looking at the pictures in the blog and it struck me the reason there is not frame for the “LCD.” The reason is that it is an OLED display. They are the only ones thin enough to not need a frame. In other words it fits inside the case and not pasted on the outside.

  • Well your full frame cam is crippled with a 35mm sensor when MF cams do so much better job.

  • I believe that the 500D sensor is based off the 50D’s rather than the 450D. Honestly, I believe that the technical jump from the 450D to the 500D was huge.

  • Does anybody be skeptical about the truthfullness of the 7D picture ?

Maybe it was made by photoshop, after all it was leaked from a forum in “China” !!

  • I sold my d700 and d3 for 5d2 I just miss the speed but picture and colors canon 5d2 can’t compare.

  • So, maybe they can reduce noise wth cooler sensors or software. But how do they combat defraction? On the 50D it is pretty obvious at f10 – f16…I hope it is a birders body and just used at f5.6 ;)

  • The mic, that looks more like a speaker, seems not to be in the same place as compared to the old 7D picture.

  • Ok i think we got some misunderstandings. I’ll try an example, taking two images from the same position (10 m distance) with same aparture (1:2,8) and to get the same (!) vield of view i use a 50mm on the crop cam and the 80mm on the FF. So focusing distance is equal and the image looks the same besides DOF. The Crop would have a DOF of 4.48 m and the FF a DOF of 2.68 m.

    http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html

  • Hey

You people claiming that FF is the way to go, why don’t you go and say that in a Medium Format forum, like a Hasselblad specialised forum, and you will get so flamed for still using a 24×36 FF that you will find our compagny (the APS-C fans) quite enjoying

  • Indoor event shooting (wedding reception, for example) requires extensive use of either wide angle lens for tight group shots or telephoto angle for candid photos with bokeh to isolate the subject. This is where APS-C fails both ways requiring frequent lens exchange.

  • I love the new back design, it’s so much better than the ugly one of the 40D / 50D :)

  • Don’t worry Fred C.

If the 7D comes with wireless flash, we will all sing your praises on this comments board.

Of course, if it doesn’t, WE WILL HUNT YOU DOWN LIKE A DOG!!!!!!!!!!!

  • price difference is bigger between MF & FF, than FF & APS-C
And Medium format inst usable for sports.

  • why not a good lens like 17-55 f2.8 IS? Maybe a 55-135 f2.8? I think the new 18-135 IS will be another plastic jar…

  • As Sharp representative said about OLED: Time-to-live for OLED is 3-4 year, and unless it’s changed, no mass production of OLED TVs.

So, if after 3-4 year display will be less colorful, no point in paying extra for OLED, is there?

  • Better yet, two direct print buttons and an option to make all of the other buttons work as direct print buttons, too.

  • Is it likely that I’ll be able to slow the 8fps down?

Maybe it’s just me but I’d like longer than 2 second bursts in RAW. Slowing down to 2fps over 8-10s would be fantastic for me.

  • I guess that the 7D has a continuous burst mode like the 50D too. As the 50D has 6.4 respectively 3 fps I would expect 4fps in the 7D…

  • No you don’t. The camera will do this for you in sRAW mode. You get all the benefits of RAW, but just 9MP (close to what you want).

Canon normally specify their ISO values conservatively. My 10MP 40D, for example, is specified at ISO 1600 and it produces a reasonably good image at that setting. ISO expansion to 3200 is possible, but, at that setting, images generally need a bit of a clean-up before being usable. If the 7D is specified at ISO 6400, then the image quality at that setting is probably satisfactory, but I wouldn’t expect too much from expansion to ISO 12800. Now, turn on sRAW and you’ll get a 9MP image at ISO 6400 that will probably be close to a 10MP 40D image at ISO 1600, or even better. That sounds like progress to me. I guess we just have to wait and see.

  • Jeeze, give them a chance.

The 7D is going up against the Nikon D300s. It is not some misguided attempt to take on the D700 or D700x: which the 5DII already does.

The 60D is now likely to be an unsurprising incremental update to the 50D: add video, slightly improve ISO, etc. However, they can probably pitch it at a lower price because a) they did not have to spend much extra to develop it and b) the 7D will take in the money from buyers who could easily afford a 60D, but who wanted something more like a D300s. Anyone who was expecting a 60D to have much better AF, dual card slots, 24p HD video, better weather sealing, etc. just got their camera in the 7D and will have to pay a premium for it.

  • can we drop the “D” already? Why not just call this the EOS 7? Are we going to forget its a digital camera?

How many more digital bodies do they have to sell before the film variants get an “F” and the rest of us can just say I bought the new EOS 7?

  • Please Canon can we have a camera like this except full frame?

The reason full frame is better is because you don’t have to use crazy wide lenses all the time.

Really wide lenses have horrible perspective and distortion.

I don’t care how sharp the 10-22mm is.
It is slow and makes everything look awful.

  • looks like it was designed to target the D300’s marketshare.
Even the virtual horizon is here (I supposed that what Gradiometer stands for).

  • “The reason full frame is better is because you don’t have to use crazy wide lenses all the time.

Really wide lenses have horrible perspective and distortion.”

To get the same image using both systems you need the same field of view, and you must therefore accept the same level of distortion. It has nothing to do with the size of the sensor.

  • However will full frame, to get the same image, you are very often have a greater subject distance and a longer lens.

So the perspective looks nicer and has less distortion.

Forget image quality concerns, try something like a head and shoulders portrait on crop and on full frame and see the difference.

  • First, the 10-22 is not IS noob, next the 10-22 doesn’t have horrible perspective and distortion. It’s actually far better than the 17-40 on FF, almost no flare visible, distortion perfectly exploitable and each corners is sharp enough. Maybe you don’t know how to use a wide angle lens, I know it’s not that easy :)

The 10-22 is a must buy on APS-C like the 16-35 II is on FF :)

  • …and call them by their price tag? I bought the $2700 EOS, not the $1900 EOD… we have a marketing wiz on the forum.

  • Actually, i’m smiling because many ppl were claiming that the APS-C sensor size will be soon over against the FF sensors.

And it’s far to be over :)

This means that Canon will produce some more great EF-S lenses :)

  • Not true, if this was the case every point and shoot would look as if it were shot through a fish bowl. Its the scale to the sensor size that is important. It’s geometry or something.

  • he did not say that lens is IS, he said “I don’t care how sharp the 10-22mm is.” Please read properly ok? noob…

  • I totally disagree, if you buy a reflex you search for image quality, or it’s better if you buy a bridge camera with and equivalent 28-520.
Problems coming from an high density sensor are 3: noise and lower general image quality, lens cannot follow the resolution (50D was already too much) and loss of dinamic range(due to pixels too small to achieve the same results).
If you do a compararison between 40D & 50D images, the 2nd doesn’t seems to have more resolution, 50D ones just seems an analogic enlargement of 40D’s; this because decent lenses (aka the L series) doesn’t resolve well a 15MP APS-C, i’m really waiting for 7D RAWs to process, in order to see directly how it is.
What’s the sense in a sport oriented reflex that can’t go high iso? Why always going back from 40D IQ? Give me a 11MP with 2 stop ISO improvement (in RAW, JPG is only for a few sports). A 18MP at the same level would be good, but only with EF-S or ultra sharp L lenses(70-200s, 24-70 and fixed focal), so what’s the point again? I need to shoot at iso 800 without noise, let’s leave the resolution to FF, keeping the same density of a 8-10MP APS-C.

  • “I agree with Mike V, an aps-c is aps-c. Full frame is still the best”

Best for what, exactly? Bragging about? Whiners?

  • fullframe will not be more expensive than crop sensor if crop sensor is better, common sense please! Mike V just ignore them, they are just too childish to say crop sensor is better than FF

  • What s stupid comment. FF is the best? yeah for what? your needs maybe?? how many times will we have to explain that the APS-C APS-H and FF sensors areabsolutely not concurrent but complementary!

Tell to Hasselblad ppl than they suck because they are not using FF, they will laugh at ya! warrior noob :)

  • You can already get 2-3 stops better. Just apply the plastic wrap filter found on photoshop. Sorry, cheap shot.

  • Of course FF is better, nobody is saying it isn’t. However, fo most photographers a crop sensor does the job.

  • Is La Romanée-Conti a better wine than Château Haut-Brion ? It depends on what is your taste and what it accompanies during the meal. IMHO it’s the same for APS-C and 24×36. It depends on what is your personal taste. If you consider only IQ, of cource 24×36 is better but photography is not only IQ, it’s also pleasure.

  • laws of physics have nothing to do with it .. it’s the most OVERUSED expression on these sites.

the purported laws of physics assume that sensor development are static.

purported laws of physics also ignore that no matter what the Mp’s .. only pixel peepers care about 100% magnifications.

  • Thanks for the examples – already the first shows the advantage of FF. Hope Rocky got it now ;-)

  • The 10-22 on 1.6 crop is NOT ‘far better than 17-40 on FF’!

Obviously you have not used both back to back, like I do. I’ll tell you now that if you compare the 5D with a 17-40 f4 with an image from a 40/50D with a 10-22 – you will see a difference, optically speaking. I find the 17-40 has better edge sharpness and better colour saturation.

Obviously you can compare images directly because the 5D is a far superior camera as far as IQ goes.

However, that said the slower 10-22mm is an amazing bit of glass considering what is has to deal with, it does an amazing job and produces fantastic images. Also if you dont absolutely need the extra stop of light, i’d recommend the 17-40 over the 16-35 – and at less than half the price, it’s a winner!

  • I mean to say ‘can not’ on line 3.

Also, it would be nice to see a fixed aperture, super wide angle, L IS lens for both EFS and Pro bodies. Fat chance of it happening though :)

  • People often make claims without substantiating their statements with evidence.

    Here are some solid data.

    10-22 on 50D:
    http://www.photozone.de/canon-eos/406-canon_1022_3545_50d?start=1

    vs

    17-40 on 5D2:
    http://www.photozone.de/canon_eos_ff/427-canon_1740_4_5d?start=1

The edge performance of the 17-40 is a BAD JOKE especially since it’s got the L moniker. This is what the reviewer has to say about this L lens:

“The problem is, again, the 17mm setting. The center and even the border performance is very high here but there ISN’T ANYTHING LEFT DESERVING THE WORD “RESOLUTION” in the extreme corners at f/4 and f/5.6. If you require at least a decent corner resolution you should stick to f/11 at this focal length.”

“At 17mm it produces rather massive barrel distortion (3.6%)”

IMHO, until Canon produces a decent 17-40 f/4L Mk2 and 24-70 f/2.8 IS, I have no desire to jump on the FF wagon. Too many lens duds to make it useful. I’ll have to shell out lots of dough instead for the Nikkor 14-24 f/2.8. ;)

  • Can someone please point out that more pixels in a small sensor does NOT mean more noise if all you’re comparing images with the same pixel dimensions.

An 18mp camera will likely produce more noise overall than a 15mp camera, but IF YOU DOWNSAMPLE THE 18MP to 15MP, you end up reducing the noise significantly. As long as the 18MP sensor is well designed to actually deliver a suitable amount of effective resolution, the slight hit in noise ratio that you take is negligible if you compare images of the same resolution between cameras.

Adding more MP isn’t a bad thing for people that are happy with a certain smaller megapixel number, it’s just a useless thing for those people.

Who knows, maybe Canon will still manage to make this a really noisy sensor, though probably not. But either way 18mp is not the end of the world.

  • And its not like you can hold a camcorder still either. If you want video looking anything like professional video you’ll need a tripod, and then the size of the equipment makes no difference.

The relatively huge sensor of a DSLR beats the $#!7 out of a camcorder.

  • I love this line from Northlight:
Rather too many people showing how having minimal knowledge of sensor engineering or physics is no bar to dismissing the performance of an as yet unseen camera :-)

  • Haha … “but Canon will never do this because would lower sales of FF cameras”.

    OR ….

they don’t do it because they can’t beat the laws of physics.

Sensor size will always be a much more important factor than megapixels, something people seem to have a hard time understanding.

  • 7D and 15-85 kit will be coming my way if all is true, including a 70-200 F/4.0 IS USM. Was going to stump up for a 50D until I stumbled across the ‘rumor’ mill ;) ….

  • I hope this is true, this was what I sujested as a real upgrade. New EF_S crop, x1.5 or x1.4

  • Very well stated!!

And I agree 100% in testing them back to back. Note I have both sensor sizes…They have their strenghts and weaknesses. Need to know how to put them to best use to make the best possible exposures.

Problem with full frame is you need to have good glass that is sharp in the corners as well…and unfortunatley that leaves only expensive L glass to choose from, at least IMHO.

  • I went through this same thing.. gotta pull out all the stops saying how you wont need a video camera to capture all the special moments of your kids… can’t just asay… oh canon has a new camera… rookie

  • From my understanding, picture noise can come from any of the following places: circut noise, sensor noise which is closely related to environment temperature and eletrical voltage flutuation, amplifier noise, adc noise and miss interpolation of the sensor signals, and any of these fields can be improved dramatically by better designs. I personally don’t mind smaller sensors.

Higher density sensor can lead to worse lens diffraction problem.

Larger sensor can have better pits to store signals, but need better lenses to deal with that lens diffraction problem too.

  • Why new lenses?

Just wondering could it be Canon did some hardware optimizations for continuous AF in video mode and a step-less aperture? This would be pretty sweet if that is the case…

Anyhow trying to understand why they released those lenses 2 new efs lenses…

“In a Crop sensor, the camera magnify’s the focal length by 1.6 and decrease the DOF accordingly. eg. 50mm lens mounted on a 1.6 crop sensor body will become a 80mm lens. So the DOF will be that of a 80mm,not 50mm anymore. I think you statement just says the opposite.”

I get where you are coming from, however it’s only partially true.

In a real life situation, imagine you have a full frame body with a 50mm lense on it and you frame a person for a passport style photo through the viewfinder. If you then stay exactly where you are, but change the full frame body for an APS-C body, when you look through the viewfinder the person will appear too close. Therefore, you will need to take a few steps back in order to frame the person correctly.

As you have now taken a few steps back, the distance between the person and camera is now further. So, with the same aperture, you will have a greater depth of field.

Yeah, I know it can give you a headache, but it’s not that hard in real life situations. ;-)

  • On Dpreview there is a new rumour, some tester has said it is x1.45 crop, thus allowing the use of ef-S lenses. However some lenses may produce little vigneting or lose sharpness in this new crop. These lense would be optimizd for this new crop. This is my guessing assuming the x1.45 crop news is true, hope so!!

  • I wonder – didn’t Canon release a new sensor technology last year where there were µlenses (micro lenses) over each pixel on the CMOS detector in order to increase the amount of light to each pixel and decrease the amount lost in between pixels? Perhaps they have improved on this technology and so that is how they could create an 18 Mpx APS-C sensor with decent noise properties. I’m trying to remember my optics, but I also think that this would help with diffraction since the effective pixel size would be slightly larger given the lens over it.

  • Again, you’re comparing apple with oranges. The 5DMk2 will show up any imperfections in glass at 21MP. The 50D only has 15MP.

Stick the 17-40 on a 5D (12MP) and compare that to an identical image shot on a 40D or 50D on the 10-22. Both at widest FOV and stopped down and wide open. The 10-22 does well, but it isn’t a match for the 17-40 on a FF with it’s far superior build quality, included hood and superior colours.

Plus the 17-40 can be used on any Canon EOS system body, whereas the 10-22 is very much a niche lens – that does a sterling job, none-the-less.

  • geez its already stated as APS-C = 1.6 crop, not clear enough? And so far no mention of dual slot, only dual Digic

  • They filed a patent quite a while ago that allowed for phase detect AF in video mode. The mirror flips the opposite way.

As for the lenses, no idea.

  • As I said before it is been said that a tester told it is a x1.45 crop.Nowhere says it is x1.6, these are guessings because of taking ef-s lenses
    I wish it is x1.45

  • at the end I think is going to be x1.6; 15mm lens in a x1.6is equivalent to 24mm, just like the flash coverage.
would have been a brilliant move from canon making a larger ef-s compatible crop
    what a pitty!!

  • Why all this talk about FF? The 7D is released to compete with D300. They simply wants the best aps-c on the market. Canon already has 5D Mk II that’s outselling the D700.

  • You’ve got the right idea. People are idiots to obsess at the pixel level. Same noise at pixel + double resolution = significantly better noise at image level.

  • duh … my comment was eaten by the html parser.

what I was trying to say was that …

This is a (less than) $2000 camera. If it were FF it would be (more than) $3500.

  • I own a 5Dmk2 which i use for functions and event photography.
I know it’s not the best for sports and action, so i’m excited that this is coming out.
Could use a second camera anyway (unless it turns out totally crap), it’ll be a good camera for sports and action.

That way i’ll have the best of both worlds, plus it will give me extra reach with my lenses. :-)

  • Number of pixels has nothing to do with it.

Firstly, if you compare the overall performance of the 10-22 on the 8 MP XT vs 15 MP 50D, you’ll find they are surprisingly similar. (So much for all the junk theories on diffraction.)

Secondly, 50D (4.5 MP/cm^2) is a far more densely packed sensor than the 5D2 (2.4 MP/cm^2). So, if sensors indeed matter, then the 50D is a more critical test for lens performance than the 5D2. BUT the reality is that the 17-40 f/4L performs WORSE on a LESS densely packed 5D2 sensor than the 10-22 on a MORE densely packed 50D.

  • ‘Lose’ corner sharpness is correct. :)

Anyway, your observation that “some lenses may produce MORE vignetting or lose sharpness in this new crop” is totally correct. Wonder how the 10-22 and 17-55 f/2.8 IS will perform on a slightly larger sensor…

  • hopefully it will do about 20 with an udma card because with less than 2 sec of burst i can’t do proper sequences of skiing oder snowboarding

  • I’m excited about the 100 macro. I hope the focus speed is faster then previous macro lenses, making it usefull for indoor sports!

  • I like the original translation… That’s 3′ as in three “foot” screen. Sweeeeeeet. Opposite of the Spinal Tap blooper. This camera won’t be portable at all with that kind of screen

  • +1 to that hahaa. yeah i was already firm with my intention of moving to 50D until i saw this gruesome rumor :D

  • This will be a great camera for next year’s World Cup, as well as Winter Olympics…

Canon knows what they are doing…

  • i just started photography, theres still many things i dont know, but could this be a foveon sensor??

one rumor said that it has almost the same pixel density as the 5D . . . ,

    18MP/3 = 6MP foveon sensor. . ,

thats quite close to the pixel density of 5D

  • As a Nikon guy, I was sorely disappointed in the D300s. If the 7D turns out to have a 1.45 crop factor and all the other speculated goodies, I will become double branded. I am sad, sad little man. Gawd, i love this s**t.

  • Well then, a long and interesting thread indeed. Some people are passionate about their specs! And to go as far as to criticize the very company that provides them the very technology they love and use in the 1st place. I for one hail from the film days. Heck, my 3.39 megapixel Nikon Coolpix gets use from time to time. Consider me humble.

I’ve not had a camera that hasn’t let me down when it comes to capturing the memories that are near and dear to me. Just the other day, for fun, I slapped on a $20 EF 35-80mm f/4-5.6 zoom on my 5D mark ii and at 1:1 screen resolution it was tough to find much flaw with it. Heck, it’s sure lighter than my 24-70L. Anyways, point is that this is ALL quality stuff as long as you know what you’re doing. IQ won’t be a deal-breaker for me with the 7D because I’m willing to bet it’s going to be as great as anything before it has been – it looks to have great performance and that’s all I’m concerned with when I fork over my cash.

  • If the sensor is indeed a 1.45 crop as someone mentioned, where will that put the pixel density, in terms of a 1.6 crop? A 40D, 50D…12mp, 14mp?

  • This will be a great camera that will be more than enough for at least 95% of photographers out there.

And the rumored price seems to be great as well…another winner for Canon!

  • Been there, done that……… that’s why I buy first and ask later..Short term pain for long time gain. “Honey I’m home and I bought you a gift”…………

  • The point of HIS would be to hand-hold with natural light.

If you are going to use a ring light (or whatever) then you might as well save your money and go with the existing 100mm f/2.8 Macro lens (which is an amazing lens in its own right).

  • If I were you, I’d *rent* a 50D and bring the lightest tripod and panning ballhead as I could afford. The 50D is a good back, but its approaching the end of its product cycle; only buy if you get a good deal on one. You’ll be glad to have the extra megapixels when it comes time to crop your work back at home.

I’m going to the Sierras myself in September and again in May and I’ll be taking my 50D with a (gasp!) 18-200mm and a carbon fiber tripod and smallish panning ballhead, since that’s about as much weight as I can justify with the rest of my backpacking gear.

If you are only going to the vistas you can get to by car, then by all means take all the lenses you have. That 17-40 f/4 will be great for panos, but I think you’ll either want more pixels or a longer lens for some of those classic shots.

Oh, and on that subject, definitely take your own shots. No question Ansel was talented and his work is legendary, but you’ll get far more satisfaction hanging your own work vs an Ansel print.

  • Does anyone else think that these photos look a little more than suspect?

The way the poster is composed doesn’t seem to be pro enough to be a legit poster. Not to mention the button positioning on the back – more of a 10D style than anything in this line they have released recently.

  • Thanks, You have a point. My original argument did noyt take the maintaining same object size into account. i.e. same object distance for both crop and FF. So I will play with the number and see what will happen.

  • “Anyone who was expecting a 60D to have much better AF, dual card slots, 24p HD video, better weather sealing, etc. just got their camera in the 7D and will have to pay a premium for it.”

Except we don’t know yet what sort of weather sealing the 7D will have. (Which I *would* pay a premium for, over my 50D, if anyone at Canon just happens to be listening…)

For that matter, has anyone confirmed dual card slots?

  • The calculator has a fault. the circle of confusion size should change with the sensor accordingly. the size should be the same percentage for both. It should be 0.03mm for FF and 0.02 for 1.6 crop. Then it will be 0.0833 % of the picture height.

However, my original argument did not maintaining same object size. i.e. same object distance for both crop and FF. So I will play with the number and see what will happen.

    Thanks

  • DOF doe not deal with area. It is the distance infront and behind the object that are still “sharp”

  • “DOF was a linear function of the focal length”. I have never made that assumption. Please read my reply to the others in this link ad see what mistake that I have made.

  • Please read my reply to the others in this link ad see what mistake that I have made. and also see what is wrong with the DOF calculator

  • “Can someone please point out that more pixels in a small sensor does NOT mean more noise if all you’re comparing images with the same pixel dimensions.”

I have tried to, several times now.

  • I have redone the calculation with the following assumption:
    1. 50mm on crop sensor and 80mm on FF will have the same angle of view. Therefore the same distance will yield the same object size.
    2. circle of confusion for FF is 0.03mm, 0.02mm for 1.6 crop sensor to keep the circle of confusion to be 0.125 % of the picture height for both sensor.
3.VWDOF calculator was used, both lenses are set at 3 meter distance and at F4.0.

Result: 50mm on crop sensor: near point 2.86m, far point 3.31
    Depth of field 0.571 m
80mm on FF sensor: near point 2.84m, far point 3.17m
    Depth of field 0.329m
Now you can see that the crop sensor does have more DOF
than the FF when everything is equal

  • yes I kinda agree.

Personally, I don’t really like the design at all especially on the back.. I’m also curious as to what kind of weather sealing this is going to offer.

  • So far you have not yet given any reason to explain why FF is so good. Please PUT UP or SHUT UP

  • Most digital sensors, including ccd and cmos alike have micro lenses over the pixel sites, and have done for a long time, what canon did was reduce the gap between each lens reducing the “pixel pitch” essentially and gaining little bit more efficiency due to larger light gathering area per pixel.

This came in the form of a “gapless” design in the 50d and in the 5d II a reduced gap size in the center and a completely “gapless” towards the edge to reduce the effects of light fall off (obviously with the gaps getting progressively smaller towards the edge).

Whether this helps the diffraction issue is debatable, however, they did increase the efficiency of each photosites light gathering capability in relation to density then conventional designs. It’s one of the contributing factors that in spite of the 5d II having almost 2 times the pixel density of the original 5d and indeed the d3/d700 it still has comparable if not lower noise levels then any of them, and certainly much less then the d3x.

  • >> Newly-designed streamlined body, metallic shutter sound, shutter lifespan approx. 150,000 times

Newly designed body, means probably also new Grip… ?

I like the Metallic sound ;-)

  • I surely hope that Canon sensor one day can have their green pixel occupy 60%(or whatever the nature percentage of green light is) of the die area–just like S4PRO which is already cease production, though noise wise Canon might not be happy to do that, and have a 16 bit ADC.

  • Being a 20D owner I am looking to upgrade to better camera (and my daughter is looking forward to an early inheritance!).

If the rumours of the specs and price of the 7D are close to the mark then it looks like it’s the one for me. I fact it looks great!

This being a rumour site I appreciate that whilst some of the (earlier) posts are pure speculation and some are more akin to wish lists, but there will also be better informed posts and these are the ones that really interest me.

More experienced heads are rating correctly as CR1, CR2 and CR3 and this rumour of the 7D specs is I believe CR3 which fills me with hope.

Why then have the completely pointless slating of the APS-C sensor (1.6 or whatever)?

There is no evidence that this APS-C sensor is not good and certainly nothing to make a person decide that they are leaving Canon for Nikon.

Sure there is a fear that in order to fit 18M onto APS-C and get it to work well is a technological challenge but until there is any evidence either way it is a waste of energy and worth less than CR1.

If Canon have produced a new 18M sensor then my only concern it that once it has been tested and put though it’s paces it proves to be a real winner.

If it is a winner then I will buy it. If it isn’t then maybe I will wait for the 60D but I certainly am not going to sell my Canon glass for a pitance in order to buy a Nikon!

  • Actually if the metallic shutter sound is really good and really loud then I don’t care if it has a sensor or not! ;-)

  • I agree, I don’t care about MP or APSc APSh FF or whatever, all i want is a camera that feels nice, and takes good pictures, which this will.

I guess people moan because when they shell out on a £1k camera, they want all that they can get.
Also some people might upgrade from a already up to date and capable camera like a 50D, therefore want improvement. I guess you could say if its not enough of an upgrade don’t buy it!
I myself will be going from a 400D to this, so I’m already happy.
