A DPR poster is making reference to a 60D being available alongside a cheaper FF 7D.

60D Specs
14.7mp (APS-C)
More AF Points
1080p Video

CR’s Take
I have never discounted that there could be TWO new prosumer SLR’s coming down the pipe. A 7D only would make very little sense spec wise. There would be no fast canon SLR other than the 50D and 1D Mark III (or IV when it’s replaced). We have heard solid rumors in favor of both cameras existing.

These 60D specs are pretty wonky, a new sensor? I think Canon could improve the current 15.1mp sensor as they did with the XTI sensor to the 40D.

  • I HOPE BOTH ! The 7D’s Logo is pretty ugly with the flash firing on it….. I bet the 60D will be expensive also…. Figures for you.. that is Canon..

  • it seems the megapixel race is now over… now starts the autofocus race…….

    inb4 direct print race

  • The shape of the supposed 7D also looks strange to me. Way too thick compared to if you look at the 40 or 50D. Looks even worse than the 30D did.

  • I wished Nikon’s D90 featured full 1080p video instead of 720p….. that kind of sucks..

  • lol, this is the worst rumor I ever heared. Canaon will never go down it MP. They never done it, not even once and I don’t believe that they are ever gonna do it.

here is what I think that 60d will look like

    same body as 50d

    1080p video

same auto focus system (or mabye a slightly improved one)

    15.1 Mega pixel

slightly faster continues shooting (something like 7Fps)

    Digic V

CF with SD (since nikon have it)

the 7d will sell at the same price point as the 5d which means that it is not a smaller model in anyway. So this is how I see it (if ever happend which I don’t think so):

an FF 7d will look like this:

1- better auto focus that 5d mark II

    2- same body as 50d

3- 15.1 Mp at the very least.

    4- digic V

5- 5 or 6 Fps (limited by the mirror box)

    6- CF and SD

    7- 1080p

an APS-H (or dare i say APS-C) 7d will look like this:

1- same auto focus as the 60d

2- better body and weather sealing than the 60d

    3- minimum of 15.1 MP.

    4- Digic V

5- 8 FPS (limited by the fact that there is a 1d mkIV)

    6- CF and SD

    7- 1080p

  • You’re dumb or just lazy. :P :P

The G11 went down in MP from about 15MP to 10MP.

    So it’s happening.

  • This makes more sense. Canon has to come out with a high end APS-C unit, probably one that is competitive with the D300s.

As others have noted, the rumor about the 7D does not make sense if this were to retail at the same price as the 5Dmkii.

You would get a scaled down 5dmkii for the same price, only picking up an OLED display…that’s whack.

  • Wait … THERES A RUMOR ABOUT HOW THE 7D IS GOING TO HAVE A SUBWOOFER ????????????????????????? OMG !!! MAN THAT WILL ROCK !

  • Actually the new G11 is lower res (10 MP) than the old G10 (14.7 MP), could be the start of a new trend for canon…

  • 14.7 is strange, its the G10’s resolution. why reinvent the basic photosite base for no significant change?

  • The problem is that the XXD line has always had it’s problems in terms of upgrades not being worth it unless you go from the 10D to the 40D and the 20D to the 50D, so the 60D needs to be something that can make the line stand out more, considering how badly the 50D has done (the 40D is half as much and the same camera except for the LCD and the resolution). The 60D has to be something worth upgrading.

  • Sweet!!!
then I can connect my iPod to it and ROCK ON!!!

    I won’t be surprised to see both a 60D and a 7D,
Canon needs a lower priced FF, and they would be stupid
    to kill the xxD line.

And if they want to give the xxD line a face lift,
    9D fits in their scheme.

I still think that 3D will be the low light fps camera everyones whining for.

  • what you`re saying does not make any sense. they decreased the mp in a compact camera, what makes you think that they can`t do the same for a dslr? keep in mind that dslrs are for serious photographers who don`t care much about resolution but the image quality.

  • Can’t see anything wrong with the autofocus race.

Unlike megapixels, the more AF points, the better.

  • That is not any current model in the photo.

The button layout is different than the 50D, and it has a pop up flash. There also looks like a small button next to the shutter button

Either way, it looks like a new design

  • Back to the photo for a minute. Where is the rest? Why did we only get a glimpse of the 7D emblem??? Although it is convincing, I think this picture is bogus. There is nobody out there that is so cruel that they wouldn’t let us see the rest of the camera. The microphone holes are a nice touch. Are these present on any of the other bodies? Is this for voice commanded direct print? lol

Anyway, I have a theory. The 5D-mkII is like the “mini me” of the 1Ds-mkIII. They share a sensor, some features, etc.. Maybe Canon thinks the 1D-mkIII needs a “mini me” of it’s own; a more economical version of the APS-H camera. This would explain everything if in fact there is a 7D coming in addition to the 60D.

If this happens, we will end up with two levels of FF cameras, two levels of APS-H cameras, an APS-C camera (to support all the EFs lenses, and a gaggle of Rebels. It actually kind of makes sense if you look at it that way.

My thought, personally, is that I would like a camera that has the following specs:

-NO fricken VIDEO of any sort
    -No direct print crap
    -15+ megapixels
    -7-8 FPS
    -weather sealed
    -ISO 50 – 12k
    -Digic V
-2 CF OR 2 SD, but not one of each.
    -built in wireless (common already)
    -USB 3.0
    -$3200.00-3500.00

    Fat Chance

  • I find this very interesting. Has anybody seen this before?

What I can gather from this is:
    – On/Off switch on top of the camera, near control dial (like GeorgeML said)
    – As many modes on the control dial as the 5DII
    – Built-in flash
    – Weather sealing on shoe mount like 5DII (I think.)
    – A small button between the shutter button and control (shutter speed) wheel? See it there on the left corner of the blue tape? There seems to be a mosaic blocking out some text near that button.

    What do others think?

  • Thanks for the uncensored version. Definitely has a similar control dial to the 5DII.

Think that makes this the 7D? Wouldn’t the 60D have the control dial of the 50D? You know, the one with all those stupid extra modes nobody uses like the little running guy and the others?

  • A cheap dumb-down 7D makes perfect sense to me. Canon probably hopes for a repeat 300D history, but this time for FF cameras.

Remember Sony is going to release a cheap FF camera and Canon takes any competition from Sony VERY seriously.

But all I care for is the 60D. I just want an improved sensor. :D

  • Don’t much care for more auto-focus points, I would like to have better ones, not more of them. I had a chance to use Nikon D700 for a few days and I was a bit underwhelmed. All those 51 AF-points look great on the paper but there are of little practical use in RL, I think it’s a huge overkill. I’d rather settle for 9-13 points, sensibly positioned with four of them marking the “golden rule” lines, all being cross-type than having 51 AF points sprinkled all over the frame.

  • Interesting theory…however, I don’t think it’s likely that a 7D would be APS-H. It would seem likely that the 7D will be a consumer-priced camera, yet Canon don’t have any lenses with focal lengths well suited to everyday use of such a camera; none of their current EF lenses could be considered a good walk-around lens on a 1.3 crop factor body. It makes sense for the 1D mark III because: a) many users are coupling the body with long telphoto lenses anyway; and b)anyone who can afford to spend that much on a camera body can presumably afford to buy a few more lenses to cover all their focal length bases. A consumer-level camera would need to have an appropriate lens to match.

Furthermore, the Rumor about the body being matched with a 28-135mm lens in Best Buy supports this. I looked up a review of this lens and it is referred to as an upper-mid-grade consumer lens:
    http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-28-135mm-f-3.5-5.6-IS-USM-Lens-Review.aspx
This is about what I’d expect to go with a cheaper full frame body.

  • +1 to that.

    really looking forward to 60D
wanted to upgrade my 400D to a 50D, but lets see what Canon have for me (:

  • this makes sense

One camera to compete with D300, one with 7D

Requirements : better weather sealing, higher fps, better AF

And two slotcards, one for compact flash, one ford SD card

  • You think that Canon abandoned the numbering format for XXD? If they did then it would be very interesting to see what they do with the Rebel series.

  • Thanks for that, I’ve seen heaps of references to that image across the web but everyone links to the original…which seems to have been removed from the original forum

  • very small viewfinder, built-in flash. -> no full-frame
no scene mode, Bulb mode, M-Fn button -> targeted for expert-wanabee.
    low potential for weather sealing.

Ok, shall be yet another APS-C prosumer camera. I pass.

  • I am confused by the power-on switch, which is integrated to the mode selector. That’s typical of Canon low-end bodies.

  • Maybe it’s the new 60D top. Why they’d put the on off switch up there I don’t know.

  • Yea. I can read mandarin. Apparently canon is releasing a new hotshoe direct print button that is wireless and can be used to remote trigger other cameras direct print buttons.

  • It will have video. Why not put in a feature that costs them very little to stick in and adds a function to increase the sales.

  • That and the video on the 5DII happens to be very high quality.

Video is here to stay like it or not.

  • ugg. the 28-135 looks terrible on a 5d2 when shot wide…… CA in the corners makes trees look like the have christmas lights….

  • Switch is binary now too.

What the heck is M.Fn. near shutter? Mirror flip for stills or super high-speed fps mode?

  • A Fn button, like at the top of your computer keyboard.
They certainly copied Nikon with a shortcut button that the user can associate to any function (eg. MLU).

  • Notice how the mode dial doesn’t have any auto modes. Looks exactly like the mode dial on a 5D. Pretty sure that’s not photoshopped either.

  • how can you say for sure that the viewfinder is going to be “very small”? this would in fact be quite a disappointment to me…
do you eventually mean: pop-up flash = tiny viewfinder ?

  • Meh… why add power switch there? :(

That means that back side of camera will be crowded with controls, so theres no space for regular power switch ?

  • yeah, personally im all for just one amazing center point seeing as thats pretty much all i shoot… but yeah i was just stating that it looks like this is the way its heading just like how the general public think the more megapixels the better im sure they also think the more AF points the better.

  • What a clown you are. They have already reduced MP for other cameras in their line up, albeit toy ones.

  • That’s more like we want to hear.

We need a mini 1D Mk III that will be the D300 killer.

Imagine an APS-H 60D with 8fs shooting – it would completely blow the D300 out of the water.

  • +2

If it’s not better, then I will be going to Nikon and will never come back to Canon.

  • I just meant that this plastic cover is much too small to integrate the pentaprism of full-frame. But the print of the built-in flash looks like a 50D’s. Not like a 450D’s.

  • so maybe it’s the top of the future 60D and not the one of the rumored 7D. what the hack, we are all just guessing ung the dark.
however, back in the old 35mm film times. there have been noumerous ff-cameras having bigger pentaprisms in a smalle body than the actual 50D.

  • Heh! That pic with the 7D logo… This 10 bill says it’s “fake”. I can’t see a pro DSLR with a popup flash coming…

  • lol, some one was faster..

The interesting part is that the curves near the Lens mount look the same as the 7d picture.

  • That 7D is PHOTOSHOPPED, the light and shape are both wrong and that fake glow (whilst a nice touch) looks very wrong too

  • the things i really noticed where that it looks slightly bigger than the 50d below. I wonder if that is a cause of a sensor size change…

  • it is interesting indeed. the curve of the component looks like 50D body, so it is probably cropped sensor. like the NL guy, it could be as well we are going to have a flip lcd screen!? I think this is great considering there will be video an the cam. that would be very useful.

  • I’m not saying that a cheap FF body is not on the way, however i believe that Cannon will release a APS-C prosumer camera to replace the 50D. The sales in the 50D have been ordinary, the 40D-50D cylce was 1yr, the xxD body group has lost sales to the 500D for those begineers wanting the HD Video option …..

In my opinion this points to the 60D/7D being a APS-C body. Canon wont abandon the EF-S range.

However that 7D photo looks too sharp to be fake …making me think we could see the 60D as well as the 7D.

If im wrong and there is only one camera it would be be a APS-C for sure…..

What you think?? APS-C or FF??

  • one thing for sure, this is not a fake component…maybe upper lid for 60d or even 7d…who knows…both coming in this September, and its is just a few weeks to go..

  • you best be trolling….

honestly, do you think they would give the 2000D a top screen thingo… its clearly the 60D if its not just a photoshopped fan made shot.

  • Pretty sure we will find out within the next month. Early September announcement for the win!

  • I hope that they don’t replace the shutter button with a direct print button.. thats all…

  • nop. The scene mode selector is not does not have all the bell and whistles of xxxxD/xxxD bodies.

  • Interesting picture.

it looks like a xxD top with a few changes,
    – missing the mode presets.
    – M-Fn button.
    – lcd back light button has moved.(like 5D2)
    – the pop up flash section looks shallower than my 40D.
    – off on switch has moved.

  • The mode dial seems to have less space around it, which might indicate a larger pentiprisim,or just a slight reduction in size of the xxD line?? But the fact that the mode dial dosnt have all the amateur presets also indicates a more pro body which i wouldnt imagine would have a flip out screen. So it we might be getting a 3.5″ screen. If the 7D logo image is real this image goes very well with it.

  • Very interesting indeed. Its not the 60D – cos the mode dial does not have the usual ‘sport’, ‘portrait’, ‘landscape’ etc. quick modes.

power switch is a new spot, we’ll get used to it. But may switch it off while changing modes.

I will set the M.Fn button to ‘dispense bier’

  • The flash mount appears huge when comparing against the 5D2 and 50D. Is this because they used an extreme wide-angle to take the photo – or is it just a small body?

  • Lots and lots of people said the same thing when the first xxxD, xxD, 1D/Dx M leaks appeared.

They had to eat crow afterwards.

Perhaps you like the taste so much that you’re back for more? ;)

  • I don’t think this is a fake; if someone wanted to create a fake they could do it a lot easier than faking a camera component like this.

I rather suspect that perhaps even Canon is stoking these rumors for obvious advantage.

As someone else pointed out, what is notable is the lack of the preprogrammed scene modes on the dial, which does indicate a higher level camera.

  • Wow, you’re brilliant. Congratulations on being the 50th person to post a link to that picture on this list of replies.

  • I’d personally like a pair of 36d’s. I’ve heard these are very comfy in the hands.

  • +1 (at last somebody cracks a funny, original gag, that is not connected to the extremely unfunny and tired direct print button gag)

  • “power switch is a new spot, we’ll get used to it. But may switch it off while changing modes.”

Well with my Canon 350D, the power switch is also under the mode dial, and after 80,000 photos I’ve never once accidentally switched it off. So I think it will be ok… you’ll get used to it (and so will I, if I buy this camera, LOL… as the mode dial and power switch on the Canon 350D is on the other side of the camera.)

  • Excellent hopefully they bring out an excellent EF-S lens at the same time a new and much improved 17-85 IS USM or a new 17/18-105 IS USM, with ring usm. Brilliant!

  • Yeah, I’m also looking to upgrade my 400D, just waiting another month or two to see if I’ll be upgrading with a new Canon…

  • Same resolution but the G10’s sensor is only 7.6 x 5.7mm compared to APS-C’s 22.3mm x 14.9mm (and FF 36.0mm x 24.0mm)

  • Agree.

The xxD line needs a boost in features to be differentiated from the Rebels.

That’s why we’ll have the 7D, which will be 1.6x crop.

The ‘cheap’ $2000 FF body will be the 5DII – but in 1-2 years, when Canon makes the 3D but still leaves the 5DII in production.

  • I’ll be satisfied when in 10 years from now they’ll have ONE multit ype AF sensor movable with a thumb joy stick anywhere we want in the frame….Can’t wait for that day!

  • I know that, the 5DMII has live view too but its way too slow and sucks so far, I never even use it, unless on tripod.

I want that to be like it’s now where instead of selecting the af point with the controller in the back BUT be able to place a larger AF focus bracket *anywhere* and see it in the viewfinder where the AF actually works tho:)

I have a feeling it will happen…its just a matter if time

  • If the 7D is only 3.9fps with a FF (or APS-H) sensor, there must be a 60D on the way: if not, Canon will no longer be present in the APS-C market which will be dominated by Nikon.
It does exist a true market for the APS-C sensor (including some professionals) and Canon has no choice: it must be present on it.
Maybe Canon would prefer the FF or the APS-H market (because it generates higher sales of big and expensive (and heavy…) telephoto lenses), but this is another story.
So I am sure that Canon will not take the risk to lose APS-C clients and will propose a “serious” body in this format.
Nikon has already said to maintain both FF and APS-C formats, it would be a risky game for Canon to abandon one of these…

  • basically I want a “in viewfinder live view” with an AF cross type + (double diagonal type) where you can place it anywhere . C’mon Canon!!!

  • … and what will be the first lens with the new IS ?

    Any rumor about that?
Is it real and ready for production of EF-lenses?

  • Looks like offical leaks from Canon if you ask me. I’ve been wanting to but the 50D for a few months now but I’ve been holding off for the 60D/7D announcement.

If they announce it in early September, when can we expect to see it on the shelves of out local camera store????

Can anyone guess from past DSLR announcement experiernce??

I have got a overseass trip coming up in early October and dont think I could go without a SLR!

    Come on Canon!!!! haha

Anyone got any ideas? I think its usually a month…

  • YEAH! +1 I agree with John Swan.

You need to go get a life…that or start pressing your DIRECT PRINT button a lot more.

  • John Swan, you’re the biggest whiner I’ve seen for a while. Have fun when you go to Nikon. A whole new bunch of stuff to whine about.

  • Someone ban John Swan, he whines way too much and tries to get people banned/blocked for making comments he doesn’t like.

  • Just another thread to today’s market position of Canon (haven’t seen it mentioned before), is the used market. Canon have to compete with second hand 5D’s for about 800 euro’s, 1DII’s for about 1500 euro for example. This are still very good camera’s that have proven themself already.

For the xxxD line, the threat comes from 20D, 30D and 40D which are for sale for 200-450 euro.

  • It’s not likely the 7D would be full-frame — unless Canon wants to disrupt the DSLR market, including their own segment. The 5D cut into sales of the 1Ds; why take a chance with an even-cheaper full-frame camera?

It’s obvious the 7D will be a mid-priced APS-sensored camera with video recording.

  • I don’t know who created this site, but I hope whoever did will learn how to write.
