With the PowerShot V1, Canon re-entered the compact camera market with somewhat of a bang. The camera has been well received by creators and some photographers, while other photographers weren't into the camera being video focused and missing features such as a flash, EVF and size.
Photographers' critiques of the PowerShot V1 are completely valid. I like the camera, but I don't “feel it” for photography.

New PowerShot G Series
We have been told that Canon is aiming to announce a new “G” series PowerShot before the end of 2025, and it will be a photography focused camera. It will have the “normal” video features. I think we know what “normal” means.
We didn't get any sort of specifications but were told that we would know more soon.
We don't think we'll have a whole like of “G” series camera, but it would be nice if the next one had an EVF, Flash and more of a zoom range than the PowerShot V1. I say, putting the PowerShot G3 X and PowerShot G7 X series into a blender would be a good place to start.
We'd also like to see a new “G” series camera to cost less than the $1000 PowerShot V1. I can't see an sort of new PowerShot camera to come in under $500. The volumes would have to be there first.
More to come…

Which i still love using.
However, improvements to the sensor and much better quality lens with a wider aperture throughout the zoom. Would be very much welcome.
Plus some welcome changes to the menu and functionality.
I would pay a premium for such a camera, which, by definition, will NOT include an EVF.
* wide aperture
* large zoom range e.g. 16-105 mm
* small form factor
* built-in flash
Essentially a G7X mark IV with a better lens, i.e. either larger zoom range or wider aperture or ideally both, and some sensor and large autofocus improvements. Don't care about EVF, only makes it larger.
In the old days, Canon might have made both.
Canon G9X Announced - Features 1 inch Sensor and Ultra Compact Body « NEW CAMERA
My bias: Fifteen years ago, a week in Europe for this American and his family of four was documented quite well with nothing but an S95. And tiny cameras are oh-so-useful in so many ways...including places that don't normally allow 'real' cameras.
Like millions of others, though, to be fair modern phone cameras do much of what my S95 still does.
All of which is why Canon needs to up their game and build the very best truly compact camera that they can--all the technological bells and whistles.
I would pay a premium for such a device.
For the last 5+ years I've used a Rebel-class body as my travel camera. I even have a pancake lens for my R10 now so it kinda fits in a coat pocket, but mostly I use the little kit lens and it works pretty well.
Or, if it was going to use the V1 sensor and be slightly larger, they could do something like the Panasonic LX100 and give it a nice fast zoom lens.
A built in-flash is an absolute must of course.
My LX100 costed 250€ while the cheapest used LX100II around goes for 650/700€, which is a price point where I can buy a 6D and EF 24-70 2.8 L or Tamron 24-70 2.8 VC G1 for the same money (or a RP and adapter for 150/200€ more); that's not pocketable of course, but still, paying more then 500€ for a compact is out of question when you can buy a FF DSLR or even a basic ML like the RP and a f2.8 std zoom for the very same money.
No “V” designation?
Sensor and lens not on the top of gimbal, “Powershot G pocket” would have been great. I have Dji pocket 2, and focus haunting and breathing is an issue there. And I am not going buy another DJI pocket, they can focus haunt traditionally all they want. That is why I am waiting for canon DP AF to bring it up.
This G series is not for me. I wish them good luck. 1” sensor is great sweetspot.
Personally, I prefer the form factor of the 270 series. It would work with the AD-E1 but I’d prefer direct mounting.
