A New "G" Series PowerShot is Coming

Well fingers crossed its an updated to the G1X mark iii.

Which i still love using.

However, improvements to the sensor and much better quality lens with a wider aperture throughout the zoom. Would be very much welcome.

Plus some welcome changes to the menu and functionality.
It's a safe bet that the next PowerShot will have the same sensor as the PowerShot V. It wouldn't make sense for Canon to create a new sensor and new sensor size to be used in just one camera model.

Makes sense, although doing so would likely mean a relatively short zoom range (e.g., 24-100/120) and/or a narrower aperture, but that’s consistent with most of the G series. We won’t see a G3-like camera with the V1 sensor.

Maintaining the "style", I'd prefer a new G5X III with a better lens (still 1.8-2.8), maybe a 4x zoom (20-80mm or, if this raises price, 24-96mm).
But my main goal to a new camera, nowadays, shoiuld be a Canon prime, similar to the new Fujifilm X-E5 (weight, dimensions, Mpx, interchangeable lenses,...).

I would be happy with a 24-120 (actual 12-60). That would result in a G5x II with a larger sensor and DPAF, which would be a very nice camera. The question is how much could Canon flatten a 60mm lens when retracted.

The zoom range: I do not think anything longer than 70mm (full frame equivalent) should be in such cameras. These cameras are not convenient for telephoto shots. Slightly wider focal length is the way to go! I find myself reaching out for my iPhone for wider shots. I hope we get a wider lens.

I hope they make several new models of PowerShot G to cater for different tastes. I have worn out my PowerShot GXMII and would like to have an updated version. It has equivalent 24-120mm lens, a 1.5" sensor, bright lens of f/2-3.9, built in ND, built in flash, external EVF and customisable dual control rings on lens barrel. In the updated version, it would be good to have a 20MP to 30MP, DPAF and EOS firmware and 10fps plus keep its current features. I did not buy the PowerShot GXMIII as it only was 24 to 72mm lens unfortunatley and my MII was still working till recently.

Right or wrong is unclear comment. :)
Hehe, that's true. For me, "right" would be if the zoom range is something like a 24-105mm FF equivalent with a decent aperture. 18-80mm (this would be my preferred zoom range) would also work or 24-240mm. Again, all three suggested zoom ranges should have a decent aperture. For me, "wrong" would be a f6.3 @50mm or the lens starting at F4.5 I tested the RF-S 18-45mm F4.5-6.3 and I really, really despise the f6.3. Absolutely dreadful for portraits (or basic family & friends shots) and anything like that.
I know that it will be better than previous model. That is good enough for me!
I don´t know if it will be better, but if the rumor is true, it´ll offer other features and focus on a different target group.

I WANT

Goal: Pocketable camera that blows away phone image quality.

I *need* a camera that is "pocketable", and can go where SLR's can't.
Phones are nice. . . but honestly. . . a good "G" series will blow the doors off of a phone.

And I can't drag my "R" series with the sack of lenses (and a flash) everywhere I go.
I used the "S" series till they stopped making them. I had a G7II - - > used and abused it till I upgraded to a G5II.
Biggest complaints on the G5 is that it's too easy for beach sand to mess up the lens shield. . . and it's borderline not-pocketable.

What I need for next "small" camera
* Widest zoom range possible (35mm equivilent 24-105 is table stakes)
* Flash. Honestly. . .sometimes for "happy shots", you just need flash.
* Good high ISO performance. (Make people believe that Cell phones are NOT better)
* Flippy screen. Must have a viable selfie mode.
* RAW mode.
* Modest video features.

What is non-essential
* don't need SLR grade autofocus. Just be better than cell phone
* 1" sensor would be nice. . . .but I would live with less.
* EVF: Nice to have. Non-essential in a *travel* camera. In my G5, I use it rarely (only when screen is washed out by sun)
* WiFi crap. Nice to have. Not mission critical. If I need to post in 30 seconds. . .that's what phones are for.

Honestly - - -anything under $1000 USD would work. I recognize a Niche market when I see one.

I´m a great fan of compacts. They are great companion tools in my work, wich involves lots of field trips and documenting rivers and water infrastructure in remote places, often having to carry equipment by foot in my back pack. I have used extensively the G12 and the M6 and I loved them. Now I use mostly a Fujifilm XS20 for this work and it is great.

Here goes my wishlist of capabilites for a new compact:
- A lens on the 18-135 mm zoom range (FF equiv), fast!
- high resolution sensor (above 36 MP) fast reading, up to 20 fps.
- preshoot enabled
- multiple exposures continuous
- no mecanical shutter! I guess we don´t need them anymore..
- internal memory of some 256 GB, plus an SD card slot
- "basic" video capabilities
- voice memos
- very flexible and backward compatibility hot shoe, that could interface with Canon *** GP-E2, including directional recording, like the Rebel T6s, and also georeferencing the photos taken WITHOUT draining battery from the camera (this is important for me!). Mobile phone continuous connection drains a lot of juice from both devices and do not record direction. No good when you are far from a power outlet. Extra batteries and powerbanks are heavy...
- The hot shoe should also be compatible with EVF DC1 and DC2 or something that replaces them with more resolution and bigger size. This would leave the main body light and the EVF would be in place only when really needed.
- another option would be to go all the way down the photography line and get rid of the back screen completely (or almost, like the Fujifilm X Pro series), dedicating more hardware (and battery resources) to a very decent EVF built-in (kind of departing from the cellphone experience altogether) but that may sound radical to some, and I agree.

Good post here.

I've sort of half-persuaded myself that the M200 + 22mm EF-M lens is 'pocketable'...but it nicely fits hand-in-glove with a two decade old-camera case that was purchased for some compact camera long ago, a case that has belt loops.

That same body (M200), when mated to the EF-M 15-45, fits nicely into a couple of very small belt-loop bags that I own...and this combination is also rather small mass-and-volume wise (with an APS-C inside).

The M6MkII is a full-featured Canon, but in fact is noticably larger and heavier than the M200...a difference that sometimes matters.

In my opinion, Canon, in essence by deciding to be 'fast followers', is now playing catch-up in this entire category (no doubt due to the prominence of cell phone cameras).

I am not at all certain that the V1 will enable Canon to catch up all that much, and look forward to getting my hands on a G-series replacement.

TBH I don't have high hopes of this being a camera that ties in with the old enthusiast cameras that we know from the G series.
Not in this economy, not with what I've seen from Canon lately.
My guess is, this will be a Powershot SX740 successor, maybe with either a V1 design or a retro design. Or at most a G7X with a crippled 24-70 f/2.8-f/4 lens.

My dream would be a camera with the same sensor, processor and resolution as the V1, and same lens as the G1X Mark II (24-120mm equiv., f/2-f/3.9). Yet, probably not going to happen anytime soon. Or it would cost $2000.

Way back in the mists of time I purchased a G9. It was excellent. I upgraded eventually to a G16 which I still have and use. It has a flash, a built in viewfinder , its portable and it takes great photographs. My only grouch was that the zoom could have been a bit longer, maybe to X10. I wonder if the new generation of Power Shots will deliver as good a service or better? Sometimes all we do is upgrade because we can, not because we need to and sometimes Canon upgrades stuff to tempt us when really there is nothing really new or better. In such a competitive market, excellence should be the norm for Canon, and we should demand the best there is. Will the new G series deliver? I wouldn't spend out if it didn't do so. It is all about the result, so dump the gadgets and make an optically brilliant small camera please Canon!

Personally, I would like to see a G5x II with a DPAF sensor. I wouldn't be offended by 16 or 18 MP. The under $1000 goal may be optimistic. You get to pick two of the three- small, good, cheap.
I'll take small and good. At home I have about quit shooting my DSLR. When I decided to get a mirrorless camera, I got a Fujifilm 100S. I still use adapted EF lenses on it, and they work just great. But for traveling, unless it is primarily a photographic trip, I leave the big camera at home, and shoot with the G5X II. I bought it in 2019 to replace the G7X II, which I still throw in my bag as a backup. The pictures come out great for posting on line and for 13" x 19" prints. For travel the main thing I could use is more wide angle range. For scenic vistas I take several shots and stitch them together. With that small a lens there is a lot less of the parallax problem of rotating bigger cameras. I didn't need to do that a lot of my trip to Norway this summer because much of the best scenery was viewed from a ship. The picture below of the Seven Sisters was stitched, but not really better for the web than just zooming out more and cropping when I got home.

sevensisters.jpg

Since I have taken thousands of pictures with the G5X II, I feel I have well got my money's worth from it. If Canon comes out with a worthy successor with at least as good a lens, preferably going a bit wider, I won't worry much about the price. I do use the popup viewfinder on occasion out in bright sunlight, so I'd prefer for the new camera to have that. I rarely shoot video at home or away, so the "usual" video features will be enough for me. My G5X II is still going strong, so Canon would need to come out with something of even more use to me for me to upgrade.

Any new rumors on this one?

Your comment of "I say, putting the PowerShot G3 X and PowerShot G7 X series into a blender would be a good place to start." Would indeed be fantastic.

Perhaps a tad wider as well - A 20-300 kind of lens!
I'm happy to pay more if it would provide something like that with a fast aperture (f1.8 to f4 for example, with having at least the f1.8 in the 20-70mm range)

My wish list for a compact camera...
A zoom like the sx740 hs with raw function, and then maybe a little bigger sensor then the v1.
And it needs to have an evf and with al the new functionality that they can give

Would just love to have the absolute best travel zoom compact camera.
