Sigma 70-300 f/4-5.6 APO OS Macro
The new Sigma lens would replaced the 70-300 f/4.5.6 APO Macro with a stabilized version.
Announcement expected this week.
http://photorumors.com/2009/08/29/new-sigma-70-300-os-lens/
85 f/1.4
The only rumor I have received about Sigma comes in the form of an 85 f/1.4 being announced. It's an older rumor.
Tamron & Tokina
I haven't received any information for a while about these companies.
cr

I’ll be interested to see if their 851.4 is as good as their 501.4
I’m certainly interested to see how this pans out. in terms of bang for the buck you really can’t do much better (usually) than Sigma
If it is, that might be my first Sigma in a long time
A Sigma 85mm f1.4 would be interesting…
If this can be priced at $800 Cdn I’d seriously consider it; pending good reviews.
Yeah, I’d like to have a Sigma 85 1.4.
I have the 30mm 1.4 and it’s a really good lens. It’s the next best thing to L glass at 1/3rd the price.
APS-C= $1600-1800 =)
APS-H/ FF= $2600-3000!!!! =(
It looks like the 7D may be in the affordable range for me but I fear the high ISO with 18MP. I would prefer higher quality low noise even it it is only 10-12MP, though the AF improvement on the 7D is interesting and probably wont be offered on the 60D. In the end I suspect I will prefer the 60D and will probably wait to see what it offeres before I upgrade.
60D or 7D? Either way I am happy to see that Canon has reaffirmed their commitment to EF-S with a couple of new lenses even if the offerings are just walk arround options. With the 7D I think there will be enough EF-S users that want/need higher end lenses (18MP!). Why not a EF-S 50-150 2.8 IS of similar quality/build to the 17-55? I would also be interested in a 200-550 4-5.6 EF-S IS for the weight/cost advantages. I don’t need extreame environmental sealing and I am not a big fan of the wasted weight of my 100-400 or the attention a large white lens draws in public places.
I am actually supprised Sigma hasn’t started making longer “crop” lenses but even if they did they arent likely to have OS.
As for a Sigma 70-300 OS… it cant be that much different than the Canon 70-300 IS. I suspect this lens would primarly benefit the non-Canon mounts but they may offer it in Canon also.
While I welcome comments, I post this primarily so Canon knows what kinds of things people (me) are looking for. It would only make sense that people at Canon are scanning these posts.
I am hoping for an awesome 85mm f.14 from Sigma. I don’t want to spend all that money on the Canon 85mm F1.2.
Eric, I like your idea of telling Canon what you want but I seriously don’t think they are going to look at 1 comment post and say “Dang, we need to do that because that one guy said we need to”. But, if there was a petition of some sort with 100,000+ signatures of people wanting the same thing I’m sure they would listen. If Canon saw a direct way to capture a market they should in theory deliver. So can you start that, I’ll be the first to sign it.
Here’s the thing…the megapixel myth is not known by everyone. I think most people when buying a camera look at Canon’s more megapixels than Nikon and in their heads think more is better. Talk to people who don’t know cameras and ask them what camera they would buy. Friends of mine keep raving about their point and shoot cameras with high megapixels.
The bummer is this equipment is just a tool to capture your vision and more megapixels don’t make you a better photographer. In my experience a lot of photographers are talking more about what equipment was used to get an image than the image itself.
Jeremiah, some of those who want greater resolution (MP) are photographers as well. More megapixels doesn’t make you a better photographer, but neither does fewer megapixels. Canon and Nikon have somewhat established their battle plans by not aligning their products perfectly — in some ways, this is a great thing for us, because instead of mirror copies of product lines simply with different branding, we essentially twice the number of products to choose from.
I think everyone needs to chill and wait for the results of hands-on testing. I’m pretty sure I remember than when the Canon 30D was out people were moaning all day about the ridiculous need for 8 megapixels, when 6 was CLEARLY all we needed. from what I have seen, the 50D’s 15 MP looks every bit as good if not better than my 30D’s 8 MP, even (or especially) at high ISO. so why do we assume 15 -> 18 is impossible?
chill out. a lot of photographers are whining more about what other photographers talk about, instead of focusing on what they want to do with their own work. I believe Chase Jarvis had a great blog entry way back when he first started, talking about how, in the end, what other people are saying and doing is largely irrelevant to what YOU want to do with your own photography
There is also this anti-megapixel myth being fanned on forums, which is the belief that lower MP always means better pictures, and it’s not true.
The 5D2 and D700 are very close in terms of noise & low light, and while the D700 might be slightly better in lab testing, the 5D2 is giving you that low noise low light ability in double the image size over the D700. So to be fair, you anti-megapixel myth people should blow up the D700 image to match the image size from the 5D2 and then compare them before bashing Canon for not having low noise. From my standpoint Nikon’s D3 & D700 are very inferior image quality to the 5D2 because I’m not going to shrink my images down to match the lower image size of the Nikon’s. You have to get a $7000 D3x to best the $2700 5D2.
+1
David is right. Every MP helps — especially for large prints. I would always rather crop then have to upsize.
I’ve had bad luck with Sigma lenses, but I still like to see 3rd parties like sigma, tokina, and Tamron improving and turning out new products.
I’m all for a Sigma 85 1.4.
Also, is the 7D dual slot or not?
Also, is the 7D a 1.45 crop instead of a 1.3 crop?
I meant to say
Is 7D a 1.45 crop instead of a 1.6 crop?
It’s 1.6 crop, no camera has 1.45 crop I know of unless the Nikon or Pentax 1.5 is not quite 1.5.
In regards to the megapixel arguments, it all comes out in post. If you can’t compose a photo technically and edit beautifuly in post, it doesn’t matter whether you have a DSLR or a point n shoot, your photos will look like crap, whether you have 8mp or 18. That’s the bottom line “photographers”.
well it have an HSm or some thing like that ?
because if it doesn’t then that will greatly reduce its use.
yawn…. wake me up when someone (hopefully canon) puts out a tack sharp 600/5.6 IS
canon is not stupid..$1700 this camera will be perfect for me
Kubelik,
Good point and I agree that we need to be patient and not assume that high megapixels with a certain sensor size automatically means bad quality. My point was not anti-megapixels as I love my 5d mark II. My point is more megapixels aren’t the cure all. As Phil said below…
“If you can’t compose a photo technically and edit beautifuly in post, it doesn’t matter whether you have a DSLR or a point n shoot, your photos will look like crap, whether you have 8mp or 18.”
Every photographer has different needs with their shooting style but personally I wish Canon would come out with a $1800 camera that shot fast with a high buffer rate in RAW (like 30 frames in the 1D mark III). If that means a 7d with a 15mp sensor verses a 18mp sensor I’d take the lower megapixels.
Chase Jarvis is the man!
Oh, and what does +1 mean? Is it like saying a quick “I agree”? Pardon my ignorance.
I have the non OS version of the lens. It is capable of very nice shots but it is not so good with my 300D or my 40D. I replaced it with a Canon 70-200 f/4. Much better and will focus on my 40D with my Tamron 1.4x with little or not degradation in IQ.
As for the 7D, I think it marks the end of the xxD line.
I agree to an extent, but Phil is not a god and does not know everything about photography.
what are Sigma and Tamron waiting for release a 70-200 f2.8 estabilized version? They need these lenses to cover demands against expensive Canon 70-200 L f2.8 IS.
I think we don’t need that much these 70-300 OS.
Phil, point taken, but I would differ a bit on the “it all comes out in post” statement.
post-processing is crucial, but not nearly as crucial as shooting it right in the first place.
that being said, I acknowledge for any sort of professional or even portfolio work, the bare bones RAW shot is never the end product.
I didn’t mean that it (noise/distortion) litteraly comes “out” in post. I met that between technique and composition, post is a crucial means to an end product. Of course the camera is important, but it’s a tool… if you look at any of the recent (digital, jim fiscus comes to mined) great photographers they’ll all tell you it was the development of their technique in capturing that photo, and their process (editing, correcting, etc) in post that ultimately made them famouse, the camera was the tool that got them there, granted an important one. My point of the original post, yes MP’s are important, what’s more important is your aproach, your technique, and delivery. it’s as simple as that. But I’m happy bout the 7D. I’m definitely buying one!
+1 yeah, I’m definitely getting one of these. and I do agree post-processing is critical to making an image what it is, and I’d go even further — it’s not a recent thing, it’s always been part of photography. ansel adams PP’ed the hell out of his prints to get them to look as incredible as they do. otherwise he would have been another guy taking [really awesome] snapshots.
yup
Wow! This is the 3rd Cannon Elph camera that I have owned. Cannon hit a home run with this one. I can’t seem to take a bad picture with this camera. I use it for work and take pictures all day long under different situations. Everything operates on automatic, the camera even switches automatically between long distance and macro modes. It is able to produce great pictures in different lighting situations, where my others cameras have failed in the past.
Many people have alos become fans of Paul Smith Shoes since they came into the market. I also one of them , I very like Paul Smith Wallets and <a Paul Smith Belts,It designs very good.
This website is great!
