What I hear
I’ve heard people in the know from Canon USA saying they have “no idea what’s going on with them” in regards to the current backorder on the 24-70 f/2.8L.
Most people in the know give you ETA’s, not in this case. Just another sign.

Yes, yes, we know it is coming. Now back to football, go USA!
I’m curious, do you purchase Canon lenses for your rental business from a dealer, or from Canon?
Another sign like the “It’s coming next week, this is for sure, take it to the bank,” CR2 posted on 2/18?

I’m not holding my breath…
WOO last minute goal FTW!!
Incidentally, since there are both IS and non-IS versions of the 70-200mm. I would think that Canon will keep the non-IS version of the 24-70mm around as well, since it’s not a MkII replacement. If so, that means the backorder status of the current 24-70mm means…nothing.

there’s plenty of them. ???
you mean futbol. :P
i hope it will be IS!
In my country they’re still available. (The Netherlands)
Plenty actually…
I would like a replacement though.
How about a f2.0 zoomlens instead of IS?
If I had the choice between those two, I would buy the f2.0 the days in advance!
But can it be manufactured, and still be affordable…
Any comments on this?

To complement the EOS 7D, a camera which shows Canon’s commitment to the 1.6 crop sensor, a new lens will be announced in time for photokina which will help underpin the 7D as a camera aimed at professionals. The EF-S 15-70mm f/4 IS USM will complement both the EOS 7D and the current EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM. The EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM is currently the only lens in the EF-S line which features a constant aperture so the EF-S 15-70mm f/4 IS USM will be the perfect partner to this lens.
The EF-S 15-70mm f/4 IS USM will also compliment the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM a lens which is currently very popular with users of DSLRs with crop sensors such as the EOS 7D.
I’ve heard this somewhere before, I think……
are you gay harry?? looking 4 a partner?
You mean rugby, right? What you did to our players was just.. gay… (i´m from slovenia, fyi) and I hope you get burned as big as you are gay in the next round.. and that´s pretty f***** much…
as for the lens… i hope my piggy will be fat enough to get me a 5D mk3 with the new 24-70 ^^
Olympus has a 35-100 f/2. So yes, a f/2 zoom is possible.
No EF-S, EF all the way. Bring on a EF 15-45/f4L and 24-70/f2.8L IS. A new 100-400/f4-56 as well while we’re at it.
If you’re going to be mad, perhaps you should direct your anger at the English, who actually sent your team home. The US team got punished by a clueless referee and your team benefited from it.
Yea, but I want a 5-1000mm f/1.0 IS (7 stops) that’s tack sharp corner to corner from f/1.0 onwards, no CA, no distortion, weighs 300g, and costs $199.
No, but I hear your dad is.
Soccer: the only sport which can make baseball look exciting by comparison.
Dream on.
Harry, you’re either an idiot or an 11 year old. Which is it?
Keep wishing.
I still think there’s a good chance that there will be no 24-70 IS replacement. The current 24-70 has been very successful and is a relatively new lens. I believe the 24-70 replacement may just be wishful thinking.
This is a entertainment and rumors site. Once someone actually knows something will be the day its announced.
If you want to believe every rumor and plan your life around them, you are going to be very frustrated.
Cr did not say take it to the bank,he quoted a e-mail he received from a person who has been correct in the past. That person said “Take it to the Bank”
You apparently still did not read the entire post, or just ignored the part you did not want to believe.
“I’m told this is for sure, take it to the bank. I have yet to hear from CR3 people in regards to the lens.
2 other lenses would be announced. One would be niche market and the other an EF mount lens. There is currently nothing more definitive out there.”
NOTICE that he had not heard this from CR3 people, the ones who are always reliable” That means he has no confirmation, its just a rumor.
Also be aware that Canon internal schedules can change at a moments notice, so even if there was a 100% valid tip, the announcement might be postponed to a more favorable time for sales reasons
So, CR1 and CR2 mean its a Rumor. GET IT YET!!
I think this rumor has legs. It is just a question of when will it come to fruition?
The 7D does seem to show commitment to several things – improved AF, helpful technologies like the built in on-screen level, and to at least some extent, video – but I really don’t see it as any overt indication of commitment to the APS-C (1.6x) format.
An EF-S “L” lens would show commitment, and I would be completely, amazingly, galactically astounded if that ever happened. I suspect the time will come when the only cameras to accept EF-S lenses will be Rebels or whatever succeeds the Rebels as the low-priced, entry level SLR.
My guess is the successor in the 7D niche will be APS-H.
for a 2.0 crop sensor
Let’s do some math – it’s one of Canon’s most popular lenses. Plus there is a $90 rebate on it at the moment (best one in a while). Plus the rebate ends in a little over a week. Might that explain a shortage – if there actually is one?
Exactly. So that 35-100 f/2 would be the equivalent of a 70-200mm f/4.
The current price Canon is about 400$ less than either Sony or Nikon. Unless Sony grabs a heck of lot more market share due to inbody image stabilization or the current design proves unsuitable for the V.Next Canon sensors there isn’t a reason for Canon to replace it.
why not both???
There is some info around here, that Canon did not launched 7D as APS-H for a reason, that he would have to introduce a new APS-H wideangle lens with it. With 7D being APS-C, you can use EFS 10-22 and be done with it…
Dont forget how Nikkors 24 – 70 has been killing the Canon version.
If Nikon comes with an d700x I would be happy enough to go back to Nikon and buying their 24 – 70.
I think a lot of people think the same. Pro Nikkors are killing Canon L lenses.
The 24-70mm is a nice lens. I own one and use it more than any other. The colour and contrast are great, but it is not the last word in sharpness. If Canon work the same magic on it that they did with their recent 70-200mm and 100mm lenses and add IS, they can jack up the price by 50% and it’ll still sell like hotcakes.
Why did you pull the article about the 35 1.4 L being discontinued?
I just bought one of those…
The US send us home.. if you where to have played 0-0,.. Slovenia would have gone to the next round (this might come as a surprice and uncalled for.. but you team sucks.. they are just a bunch of rugby players that where to soft for rugby.. just look at the second goal?! I mean.. is that WC worthy? And don´t you say hey.. it´s a goal.. teeth are expensive…)
Are you refering to the third goal? The referee stoped the game about 3 seconds before the goal, how dare he not count that, dumb, dumb referee..
70-200 yes….but f4 no…
Smaller sensor is equivalent to select a smaller crop of the formed image by the lense….
Using a 50mm f1.4 on a APS-C will give 75mm (Nikon) or 80mm (Canon) but still with f1.4 aperture.
24-70 on my aps-c is to heavy, to big, ugly lens hood, no long enough, so i’m not pissing in my pant everytime i hear about a “new” 24-70 :)
DOF will be equivalent to f4
He just cut and pasted this exact post from a week or two ago.
f4 EFS lenses would not be useful. not much advantage over variable f, and if you want something decent for crop you need to go with a 2.8 zoom. That’s the only way to get some shallow DOF and decent low light performance. period.
I have to agree with harry. I tried watching some world cup, but it was sooo boring.
Maybe if you’re drunk or stoned out of your mind it would be entertaining.
+1
But it can’t be any bigger than the 50 1.8 or I’m switching to Nikon!
Because it isn’t.
You’d be better off with a super-zoom I think.
I’m both 11 and an idiot and even I know that soccer is lame. What’s your excuse?
Soccer is about as interesting as 3 hours of Nascar. Sober.
Of course, since Nikon only had that since barely 3 yrs. ago, while Canon had theirs since ’02, so it’s only to be expected that the newer and more expensive lens would have the better IQ. Nikon is just catching up with me-too lenses that Canon had for a decade, bar the 14-24/2.8.
Makes sense.
But if they are smart. They come with better products than their competition.
@Scalesusa
It’s a rumor site, and we’re discussing rumors. By definition, a rumor is just that. Even CR3 is a rumor. It’s not a fact until it’s no longer a rumor any more.
A discussion is just that – a discussion. My point was that this rumor has been around for such a long time, to varying degrees of certainty, that it’s approaching absurdity. Ever heard the story about the boy who cried wolf? This one’s almost to the point that I’d doubt the actual Canon press release if it was posted here.
Nothing against CR guy – in fact, his early info on a forthcoming rebate was posted in between my ordering a 7D and Amazon shipping it, meaning I was able to postpone my order a couple of days and save $100. Thanks again to him for that!
But this is a comments section of a rumor site. If all we did was say, yeah, that’s true, cool, I can’t wait for this [insert rumored item here] then what would be the point of a discussion.
Do YOU get it? LIGHTEN UP!!!
I do not understand why The DOF will equal to f 4. based on the DOF calculator that I am using. The lens actually have less DOF on a crop sensor, when you decrease the COC by a factor of 1.6 (for the reduced size of the sensor).
Try watching a game of chess ;) It’s only interesting if you know the rules and tactics….
if financially interesting, yes. If it makes more sense not to, and to compete in other arenas, they’ll happily leave the 24-70 as-is. It’ll cost them a lot of work and manpower to design a new lens, they can’t just cater every whim online. Not even if Nikon has a better thing (see the 200-400 that is reportedly killing any Canon offering… and still no counterpart).
Everywhere I have looked it is in stock – B&H, Amazon, Dell, etc. I have no idea why it is not available in Canada, but… probably not due to discontinue/replacement. I just sold my 24-105 & 28-70 to by the 24-70 – so if they are going to do something I hope it is fast. Can’t survive long without my fav lens.
It’s backordered everywhere but the USA. Maybe that means when they release the IS version of the lens, which will clearly be very soon based on the backorder status, they’ll sell it everywhere BUT the USA???
That figures!! I will be in Canada in August…. Maybe…
Yes, there will be greater DOF, that is the problem. The increased DOF of the 2.0 crop makes the DOF of a f2.0 lens equal to DOF of a f4.0 lens on a FF camera.
Because the sensor is a crop factor 2.0, a 50mm lens will be equivalent to 100mm on a full frame. In order to frame a shot equivalent to 50mm on a FF at 10 feet away, the photographer needs to stand 20 feet away using the 2.0 crop camera using the same lens. The increased distance gives a photograph with much greater DOF.
Deep DOF is easy to achieve, shallow DOF is not always easy, and is often desirable.
FF 50mm, f4.0, at 10 feet, DOF = 2.94 feet
2.0 Crop 50mm f2.0 at 20 feet DOF = 2.92 feet
I use 10 feet focus distance for FF and 20 feet for 2.0 crop because this example yields the same image in the frame.
You can also do this comparison by using a 50mm on the crop at 10 feet vs a 100mm on the FF at 10 feet. The result is the same, the crop will have a deeper DOF equivalent to 2 full stops compared to the FF.
BTW, out of focus shallow DOF isolates the subject and becomes quite pretty for example around a FF equivalent of 85 mm f2.8 (depending on focus distance), as you can get from the 70-200 2.8 lenses.
It is more difficult to get this effect on a crop camera, and especially on a crop 2.0 camera. Even a f2.0 lens doesn’t really cut it. This, full use of lenses, and better low light performance are the main reasons why people pay more for a FF camera.
(DOF calculations: http://dofmaster.com/dofjs.html )
I also don’t get why this lens should be on short supply? Searching some webshops it seems you can get it pretty easy….
True. The game was stopped before the goal. Another funny thing is that if you look at the line during the free kick right before the goal, it looked so much like american football as compared to soccer… Players wrestling each other in a line; the US team trying to push their opponents into the net (instead of get the ball there). Maybe this is why the referee stopped the game, huh? No american football allowed in a soccer world cup game (real football?).
Pizza boy, pretty much the whole world is excited about football. Especially during the world cup. Except the northern 2/3rds of north America, which btw still seems excited but not that much. I think if you learn the rules and give it a little time you will easily get to like it and catch up with the rest of the world.
it’ll make me grow more muscle for sure… but i suppose the only way to make it lighter is to use “engineered plastic” that they’ve been using for the past few upgrade to…also shortening the life expectancy… great…
but i must admit soccer is interesting compared to the lockup time i have in my garage while my mom is having fun with that neighbor uncle :-))
oh yeah, you are really an IDIOT Harry.
oh Dirty Harry . he he he
Pizza Boy was talking about the CUP he drinks his coolaid. he he he
that´s the one l lens noone wants anymore , it´s a softy
Canon save me.
Your talking rubbish athis lens would be the crop equivelent of the 24-105. The 15-85 is not it.
Be queit garcon
