Announcement Dates & 60D Specs [CR2]

Canon Rumors
2 Min Read

Where is the stuff?!
We’ve reported before that July 13, 2010 could be an announcement date for some Canon photographic products.

http://creativelive.com/calendar/

If you go there and check out August 25, you’ll see a “Special Epic Event”. It mentions an announcement for July 13, 2010.

Could they just be announcing a workshop and nothing more? Possible, I was burned by that once before.

However, this is the 3rd clue as to July 13 being an announcement day.

60D Specs
I receive a new spec list almost hourly, oh what to believe.

If I go with the people that have been right in the past (not always), then this is what we have.

  • 18mp
  • New 9AF point system.
  • 5 Crosstype Sensors, all f/5.6 except for the f/2.8 Center
  • Articulating Screen
  • 6fps (A drop of .3)
  • DIGIC IV
  • Full HD Recording Mode
  • Wireless Flash Transmitter
  • New Battery & Grip
  • 98% VF
  • Weather Seals like the 50D
  • Still back and forth on the formfactor.
  • I still remember being told once about a new exciting feature never seen in an EOS camera before.

I do not expect a 1Ds Mark IV to be announced at this time. I’m receiving no news about such a camera.

There could be a few PowerShots announced with the 60D, but not the G12 or SX30 (if that’s what they’re called).

  • :O Nice CR2.. at last we are hearing about the wanted 60D. Its as good as i imagin.. im curious about that UNIQUE FEATURE of the 60D

  • One thought I had: If the 1DsIV is going to be completely different from the 1DIV (and announced this year), then maybe the 60d will come out with the Digic V just so that the new processor can be tested in the real world first. Perhaps that funky new feature is related to something on the 1DsIV?

  • 5 CROSS-TYPE autofocus points is a downgrade from the 60D. Maybe it’s a point and shoot or a hybrid camera.

  • Whatever it is-this new Canon will be announced a few days from now-if at all accurate.

  • My bets are on a 5D-III for Photokina and a Canon version of the D90.

Don’t know if it’s going to be called 60D.

  • 1.4MP seems a bit low. ;)

I’d also be supportive of a lower resolution sensor (12-15MP) for pixel binning purposes. I doubt, however, that the Canon marketing department would support a drop in MP below their entry level SLR.

  • “I still remember being told once about a new exciting feature never seen in an EOS camera before.”

You just listed that “exciting feature never seen in an EOS camera before” it is the Articulating Screen.

  • If the spec is true, then both the AF and FPS rate are worst than the 40D. That will make the 60D almost like a Rebel T2i , except a better body. I do not believe that Canon will set such a low standard for the 60D.

  • The New feature should be the articulating screen.

I hope that they get the form factor to match the D90.

  • OMG! another failure for canon! sigh!
    – even the 40d have all cross type sensors
    – articulating screen degrades weather sealing
    – 6 fps is a drop from the previous 6.3

i hope no one will buy this crap camera just to send a message to canon that they need to review their lousy strategy

  • Do people continue to wish, never mind believe, that a 5D3 will come out before a 1Ds4? There is *NO* reason for Canon to launch such a camera. None at all.

  • These specs don’t tell the full story! The most likely special feature is that the camera will do double duty as a paper weight. Seriously though, you must be kidding about the AF specs, no way that they would dumb down the AF from the 50D that much. Take this one with a grain of salt.

  • Lower FPS rate and 9 cross type AF? Is there no hope for a decent middle range camera between the T2i and the 7D? With 18MP the noise control is hardly going to be better than the T2i, it seems pretty useless to upgrade for such small differences. I continue to hope that we’ll see a better AF system at 6.5 FPS. If not I guess I just need to save a little more a get a 7D.

  • Seriously… another new battery? What’s wrong with the various new ones they’ve been releasing lately?

  • Man, I can’t handle all the “experts” on this board! Look at all this talent! Is this where Canon marketing puts up all their new job postings?

  • me too. my knees are getting arthritic. lol i couldn’t wait; i bought the 7d and i couldn’t be happier.

  • Canon & 18 mpx apc sensor my ass … People needing more mpx have simply by camera with larger sensor .. or . Go to Medium format if needed … Most of the people shooting 90 % to web need only … 6 mpx ??? Okay 12 ! Why put 3x more … This is pure milking of market, & “nothing” to do with photography ! And no Canon “cannot” increase dynamic range or noise performance … No! This is “cameras” for dymmy masses – marketing department.

  • If you really want everything better than this rumour, there’s already the 7D.

I have to wonder if they really are moving the xxD line down to D90-ish level given the 7D positioning.

If it has the articulating screen I’d be first in line for it, assuming they figured out how to do contrast AF quickly now.

  • As long as the 18mp sensor is better than the one in t2i/7d, I’m in. But the chance thats happening is pretty slim right?

    I was hoping for a digic V..

  • Except the body,
    except the joystick/jogwheel,
    except 6fps compared to 3.7,
    except the viewfinder,
    except…
    but yeah… almost a Rebel T2i. ;)

Nonetheless I highly doubt it will only have 5 crosstype AF-sensors as the 50D has already 9.

  • Common, 6 fps compared to 6.3 is not a big difference. I cannot imagine being in a situation thinking “well, I’d LOVE to have 6.3fps now, but unfortunately my silly camera only dows 6fps.”

  • *YAWN*… Talk about a step backwards. Just lower the price of the 7D, 5D Mark II and call it a day.

  • babh with that specs i wont buy it for several reasons.

i dislike the articulated screen idea its a dust gathering mechanism wich is anoying as hell as seen on on the sonys.

please canon put that crappy screens on entry level camera’s where they belong if i want one ill get the external screen.

why on earth still a 9 point AF…. why not 11 , 13 or 15 i could really use 4 extra focuspoints if they cover the corners near no camera has a focus point in the corners…

a smaller body will keep me from buying it as i need the bigger body to remove the cramps in my hand i get from the 450D.

the flash transmitter is a plus tho.

  • I’m sure if Canon kept it consistent with the batteries like Nikon does, it’ll save them money in the long run. Like what LostBoyNZ says… What’s wrong with the current ones?

  • “I still remember being told once about a new exciting feature never seen in an EOS camera before.”

    TOUCHSCREEN? :-)

  • @Snorlax: 5DII went down in price dramatically in Switzerland. Its lowest body-only price-tag equivalent in US$ today: 2,198.06 USD.

  • What does “5 Crosstype Sensors, all f/5.6 except for the f/2.8 Center” mean? I.e. how does aperture apply to the sensor? What’s the difference between an f/5.6 sensor and an f/2.8 sensor?

  • OK, I hope these specs are not true. I’m not buying it if they were.

    -I hate articulating screens.
-I want a lower density sensor, as I shoot mRAW mainly with the 7D but I still get the noise performance of the full sensor. I want a lower mpix camera!!

C’mon Canon, give us the variety and the luxury of choosing what we need! dont make all the APS-C cameras with the same sensor.

  • AF sensors can be built with differnt base lengths.
A wide variant gives you a more accurate reading, but if the aparture is to narrow it will meter the insideof the lens barrel.

Now a Cross sensor may have one axis wide, the other narrow: cross functionality at f/2,8, but only line for darker lenses.

Things can get confusing with more complex sensor patterns, as the diagonal lines of recent fashion, a wide and a narrow line in parallel or field arrays. :)

  • The successor to the 1000D is the next announcement. Confirmed by PEOPLE® Magazine.

  • Lazy Saturday morning…I think I’ll jump in to the discussion.

#1 on my priority list for a 60D is better IQ, especially in medium to low light. Won’t get it, though. Why? If Canon dropped the sensor to, say, 12MP, and increased IQ, DR, etc by 1-2 stops it would cost them some sales of 5D2 and 1Ds. Hogwash, you say! Think about it: can the average consumer *really* tell the difference between a 12MP image and a 24MP image in a magazine? If the per-pixel IQ is the same, then probably not. *Lots* of studio photogs would buy 60D’s as their second, third, fourth bodies, rather than another 1Ds, 5D2, etc.

No, seriously-improved DR and low-light IQ are almost certain to be absent. Too bad for me.

  • Down? The xxD line and D90 are on one level (both have some advantages over the other in some aspects)…

  • The 18MP sensor in the 550D is as good as the 18MP sensor in the 7D.

What do you expect from Digic V?

  • â– Wireless Flash Transmitter

is a good feature of think of Canon… drop market of products also pocket wizard or similiar…

  • Not a good enough reason to switch, specially that Nikon lenses are priced more, and less variety… for example, I cant live without my 70-200 4LIS!!

Besides, it’s pretty silly that Nikon guys think 12 mpix is the best thing ever, and Canon guys think 18 -or more- is the best ever!! why can’t we have variety of both in both brands.

Yes, many Canon users want less than 18 and many Nikon users want more than 12. If both manufacturers made different sensors it will be better for all to choose what suits them.

  • At least with pixel binning, you can do it after the fact. Just shoot in RAW, and reduce from there. I do this all the time with my 50D. The downside is you don’t save any space or transfer time on the raw, but you *do* get the primary benefit of binning – lower noise.

  • The reason for a new 5D is higher performance; this sells cameras. I’m looking for more dynamic range and higher ISO. The places that might show up are 5DmkIII and 60D. There isn’t a single feature other than those two that would make me move along from my 50D; Until I see both cameras (unless the 60D is a huge surprise, ISO and dynamic range wise), I won’t go for the 5DmkII, either. Right now, it’s the best camera Canon sells, if the metric is quality of the image taken (and that’s my metric.) But I’d still like to see a step further. Unfortunately, that’s likely to be more megapixels instead of quieter, deeper pixels — but if so, the 5DmkII awaits. :)

  • This 60D stuff is slowly but surely becoming more mythical than the 7D rumors has ever been.

  • They did with the 40D and 50D…. it would seem that this is exactly the product line where they do such things. So I’m going to go with – you don’t know what you’re talking about. :)

  • Yeah, lenses is what keeps me from changing to Nikon. I’ve got a lot of $$$ tied up in lenses.

And to have both systems… ouch. Can’t carry ’em both. Too many lenses.

So Canon it is. Probably 5DmkII or 5DmkIII, I’m guessing, unless the 60D brings us a nice surprise in ISO/dynamic range.

  • He’s done very well in the past; so I think he’s earned our interest and attention, while you… you’ve earned nothing. You’re just a whiner.

  • I you want evidence for you rant, go to Best Buy and listen to the customers and sales people. I never know whether to cringe or laugh.

  • The range never really aligned closely between Canon and Nikon in the past… so we could argue the relative positioning not that it matters much.

  • He was probably referring to pixel binning for HD video. None of the Canon DSLRs can do that yet.

  • a touchscreen that lets you tip where to focus would be cool but it would have to replace all the buttons in the back to make the screen big enough for the feature to matter.

  • Agreed.

What would I like? 14MP and higher IQ with some great movie modes… pixel binning… Digic V makes sense, and I like the theory of testing it in real world before making it’s way to the higher end cameras.

First of all, as far as MP, it’s a moot point about IQ in “magazines”… what pro shooter is going to use a 60D, so why wouldn’t 14MP be enough? Especially if it’s 14MP of high quality image capture.

Secondly, what is the market for this camera? I think Canon is positioning it as a prosumer fun camera for most regular users…it isn’t made to enter the realm of the 5D… except maybe as a backup body.

  • Better noise reduction, more hightlight/shadow range.. that all happens with the Digic processor so far I know

  • Unfortunately, yes. I even try to educate my own family, but the simple rule: more megapixels = better is still followed :( Why? Because it’s easy, and almost every company agrees with it. It’s the same reason people want to have a simple mark awarded to lenses, cameras, cars and whatever. No thinking required, higher mark is better. You know, thinking is actually very hard.

  • Don’t act so childish and stop whining.

You want a 7D specced camera for the price of a 50D.

    That won’t happen…

  • Or maybe it will use the 7D AF technology, so it will work better with less cross-type sensors.

Personally, I only use the centre one in the 50D, so it’s all a bit moot.

  • Noise reduction yes. Highlights/shadows (dynamic range) is a function of the sensor.

  • another megapixel masturbation from canon…

new xxD camera market position is already eaten by 7D n 550D, both of them already have 18mp n vid, if canon want to save they market, just make low MP camera but with better IQ n usefull features : for example 12-14 MP, 16bit raw, 7D AF system, more wide DR especialy in highlight, better WB n color acuration

  • That sounds like a camera that will meet the needs of many many photographers at once. WITH IS EXACTLY THE REASON WHY IT WONT HAPPEN. Canon is a business. Their goal is to make money and maximize profits..hence segmentation of their products

  • This is a very interesting way of looking at it. I think you are not too far from the truth. However, there is another very important reason for Canon not to drop down from 18Mp to 14 Mp or even 12MP. It is the marketing department trying to exploit the ignorance of the general public. Juts look at the comments on this site. Most of them wants more Mp. At the same time not that many people are aware of the draw back on high Mp sensor: bad dynamic range, noise, diffraction limited at any aperture smaller than f 6.3, resolution limited by even the best lens etc. Some of then even openly delay these draw back. Some of them even use very bad language on the people that do not agree with them. Some of them claimed down sizing the picture will improve noise and resolution etc. You just cannot create something that is not there. you also cannot get rid of something without paying a price for something else. If the end result is a down sized picture, why do we start will a high pixel picture?? Also how many people can tell a good picture from an excellent picture in fine detail? With such mentality, No wonder Canon will be keeping on making 18 MP ASP-C sensor DSLR. If I were the marketing guy for canon, i would push for a 22Mp APS-C sensor on the next round, even I like the picture from a 10 MP sensor.

  • It would not happen because we are the minority that want good to excellent picture quality and will live with 12-14 MP APS_C sensor. Please read my reply to Orangutan in about five comments before this

  • The 7D is already old, so a new camera is quite capable of picking up some of its features as the next 7D will have other newer stuff.

Canon also have to keep competitive products available to keep their market share against other vendors.

  • You only need less than2 MP for web. I do not think people NEED 18 MP. They just WANT it. I think that is “I am bigger than yours” attitude. For me, 10-12MP gapless APS-C sensor, with all the feature of 7D,MINUS the video, will be my ideal camera.

  • Yeah – I think I would buy a 7D instead of a 60D for 100-200 €/$ less just because of the “old” batteries.

  • Sadly exactly the same as most “rumours” on this site that are not leaks, overheard rumours but simply made up bs.

  • The 60D should be a 50D with new processor, Full HD video, 18mp sensor, and AF like the 7D. Maybe 100% VF?

    That’s all I ask for.

  • 13.8 mp
    Digic 5
Advanced video with 3 additional crop modes: 1080/2 1080/3 720/4.5
    1 stop DR improvement
    1-1.5 stop ISO improvement

Direct competition for the D90, the best selling dslr in markets around the world for 18 months and counting.

Canon and Nikon’s agreement to offset models has been thrown to the wayside. The 7D aimed directly at the D300s with an almost identical price point ended the ‘agreement’.

With the overwhelming success of the 7d, Canon goes after Nikon’s best seller. $1099/ $999 street

  • Turning RAW image into smaller jpeg is not pixel binning .it is just digital processing. As it is today. Nobody can do pixel binning with the Bayer sensor. It is do able for the Foveon sensor. You are just grouping 4 pixels into one in the Foveon sensor to increase the sensitivity and hence decrease the noise. also you will cut the pixel count into 1/4 and decrease the resolution.

  • Thanks. May be I should take the same approach of yours and wait for the miracle (12 MP gapless APS-H sensor).

  • Yeah exactly! I love Canon lenses, & we all Canon users now have hi-res cameras in our bags, whether 550D, 7D, 5DII, etc…

Time for a low res better IQ camera, nothing is wrong with the current ones, but they are perfectly capable of making a better lower res one, so why not?

Just imagine if the 1DIV or 7D sensor technology was used in a 14-15 mpix sensor!

  • What you said makes perfect sense, except for the 7D AF. That’s what makes the 7D special, and they wont use it in a lower category camera. But I’m in for a lower res better IQ camera.

  • And if you shoot RAW, the processor has nothing to do with the IQ. Frame rates or writing speeds yes, but IQ, no.

  • There’s 1 thing that gives me hope: Canon has stopped the pixelrace in some P&S models. Maybe ….

  • I would need a 12 MP APS-C 7D, or a max 20 MP FF 7D.
At the moment I’m still stuck with my good old 10D, due to the idiotic Canon strategy. If there weren’t my 70-200 f2.8 IS and 100 L macro, I have already changed to Nikon.
Maybe I should do that in 6 months, if they continue to make crippled cameras below the 1D line.

  • Men.. it fires 18mpx frames with 6fps… its enought.

I cant belive a single DIGIC IV procesor can stand against 18mpx burst… Canon 7D has 2 procesors and you only got 2.5 seconds of burst…

  • Could this UNIQUE FEATURE be a BUILT IN IMAGE STABILIZATION???? O_o

so you can save money on IS Lenses..

  • I also bought a 7D and Im happy with it… i couldnt wait for the 60D… but im just curious about that unique feature of the canon 60D

  • no way… since they’re making more and more IS lenses, why bother making IS lenses if planning to have an IS camera??

  • I think the D90’s successor will be a game changer. Like the D90 was/still is.

  • We have heard from inside sources (it’s on our blog, so that must mean it was ‘us’) that the new 60D will have a *Wonder Camera Mark II Team’* mode – where you can directly request new features from a menu in the camera and simultaneously post the fact that you made the request on your blog – it also features what Canon are calling ‘the Canon auto-claim engine’ – whereby whenever a new feature appears in any camera at any time during the natural life span of the camera owner the 60D will generate a post on Canon Rumours claiming that this new feature was the camera owners idea.

    Thank you.

    Us.

  • The thing is, most of us have already gotten over the anti-MP backlash. It’s now obvious that more MP IS indeed better, so I’m sure this trend will continue. Do we really need more? Maybe, maybe not, but it definitely delivers better image quality for people who actually print their images.

I print A3 and A3+, which isn’t even that huge, but there is a definite improvement with 18MP over the 10 I used to have.

  • Canon stopped the pixel race on point and shoot is due to they have reach the limit of the processing fab (except G11). I really doubt that Canon will roll back the pixel count across the product line.

  • There will also be a special “Canon Rumors Reader” edition.

It will have a 1 mp 4×5 inch sensor because Canon Rumors readers all “know” that big sensors with fewer mega pixels are always better.

On the Canon Rumors edition the “Canon auto-claim engine” will also include a special “Canon Doesn’t Know Jack” feature that is also activated by every announcement from Canon. It will post a comment that says that the new feature is crap and only illustrates that Canon doesn’t know anything about the camera market.

Fortunately, this special feature does not conflict with the “auto-claim” engine, so that readers can simultaneously claim credit for new features and trash them.

  • Rocky, you’re (very) confused. Binning is simply averaging or otherwise wise combining neighboring data into fewer pixels. It can be done with RAW or processed RGB data. Typical Bayer pattern is

    RG
    GB

Binning sets of these is trivial. Binning them after they’ve been interpolated or otherwise de-bayered performs exactly the same as if you did it first: You get square root of the pixel count noise reduction, and the image shrinks.

There’s no magical “must be rectilinear” requirement in order to undertake binning.

BTW, I write image processing software, including de-bayering code, for a living. So trust me on this one.

  • fyngyrz, we are talking exactly the same thing. you call it pixel binning, I call it digital processing. In my book, pixel binning is to combine the data of the pixels BEFORE deBayering. that is why no camera maker that is using Bayer sensor dare to use the term pixel binning. instead, they use the term ‘processing. Since you are the professional in this area, I have to take your word for it with respect. May be you should convince camera maker to start using the term “pixel binning”. this will give them more cloud.

  • Pardon my newbishness, but what exactly does “5 Crosstype Sensors, all f/5.6 except for the f/2.8 Center” mean?

Does it mean that the center AF point achieves its best performance with f/2.8 or wider lenses, and the ones at the periphery do beset at f/5.6 and faster? E.g. a f/4 lens would max out the performance of the outlying points but would not achieve the center point’s best possible performance?

And does anyone recall how fast the 7D’s AF points were?

  • I’m no technician, but since it’s unlikely you’ll get a better answer, here is how I understand it.

The 7D has 19 crosstype sensors with extra sensitivity (f2.8) at the center.

The T2i has nine crosstype sensors with extra sensitivity (f2.8) at the center.

As an aside, if you were to believe this rumor, the 60D would have fewer autofocus sensors than the T2i. Personally, I seriously doubt that will be the case. Probably will be the same as the T2i, but that’s just my opinion.

Sounds like, from reading Canon’s website and other online resources that you’re on the right track. The center AF point is a little more accurate in low-light than the other points, making it easier for the camera to autofocus in dim light.

In low-light situations, where an autofocus sensor might have trouble picking out the edges, the center point is more accurate.

I’m sure there are some techies out there that will correct my explanation, but this is what I get from gleaning a few websites.

Bottom line: I wouldn’t worry all that much about it. As a former F1 owner now using a 7D I can tell you that my pictures are about 100 times more likely to be in focus now than they were when I was shooting film with a manual focus camera.

  • The Special Epic Event is Wedding Photography Course with Jasmine Star, no camera announcement.

  • Thats too bad about the announcement… but that workshop sounds like it is worth checking out. (for me at least)

  • Hmmm not happy that they are changing the batteries and the grip. By all means increase the battery performance, but I dont want to have to throw out my batteries etc for a body upgrade. I may well wait…
