Confirmed
I've received confirmation that a new Canon body is being tested in Vancouver. Things are so tight lipped that this great source hasn't seen the model number.
It's suggested this is final testing before an announcement.
The same source has said we will see a 1Ds Mark IV before the end of February.
So if anyone attending the Olympics sees anything attached to a big white lens that looks suspicious, send me a picture of it.
cr

I hope we will see a lot of 1D4’s at the olympics.
It would be nice to have a 1Ds4 that can shoot full 32MP images at 5 fps and a Medium Size (16MP) 10fps mode for whoever needs it…
I think it should be possible.
Even at a price of $8000 that would be the unbeatable camera…
32mp, full frame, how about a square sensor (think about it).
Physically as good as impossible. Canon already has a short flange focal distance where a fullframe mirror only fits in tightly…. if it is square it would 24x24mm sensor which sucks compared to normal fullframe.
Hey, all the bodies are being tested at the Olympics…every event. And one just died an hour ago. Luge, from Russia. 21 yrs old.
I live in Vancouver, and the opening ceremony is within 4 hours, I’ll try to steal one of those for you ;) :p
Oh, I get it. Yeah, your correct! ;)
30×30, actually.
I think G-tus was mistaken about the focal distance, too. That can be worked around dependent upon the internal mechanics, swing, etc. Square resolves better because it uses more of the central lens, less of the edge (percentage-wise). Also, the pixel pitch would be better, not to mention no longer needing to rotate the dang camera.
Well… I guess this “source” should have been able to recognize if it was 1Ds!! I mean the 1Ds bodies can be spotted from a mile! Weird that he said he couldn’t see the label on it! 1Ds don’t even need a label to define them! Or maybe it’s another compact body camera, like a 60D or something else… maybe that’s why he didn’t recognize it. Don’t know…
Swing is possible yes, but don’t you think this has a serious impact on mirrorflip life expectancy? Not to mention an increase in viewfinder blackout, which is one of the reasons why 1-serie bodies have an enhanced working efficiency and speed in my opinion….
It’s the 6OD !! confirmed!
is that a CR 3? LOL
I’ve seen Rob Galbraith testing the 1D MkIV and it looked suspicious, does that count?
That sounds like a very nice option. I’d sell my MK IV for that.
shut up noob….
shut up moron
It’s gotta be a 1DsIV.
For Canon’s sake I hope this is the 1ds mark iv, and that it’s NOT 30+mp. I hope they kept it at 21 mp or made it even lower and just improved the sensor a lot. But of course I’m dreaming, they’re going to cram more pixels just to have the highest MP count on paper.
are you gay`?
We will see who is the moron once we get the proof tomorrow.
he was georgian, not russian!
westfall said clearly that canon wont make any steps backwards…but to think they would step on the same spot with a 1D(s) series camera…you are dreaming, a future 1Ds IV camera will more than probably have 30+ mp
I don’t think they’d be using a mid-range DSLR for the Olympics…
Hey MM what’s up dog! It’s all your preaching and teaching that finally got me to cancel my 1DMIV preorder (as well as the high res images). I hope you’re right this time as well, but logically I have almost zero confidence in Canon putting a lid on the pixel war as FANTASTIC as it would be.
Canon is a pixel warmonger!!!!! Canon yells “Hey everyone eat my pixels!” as they shove pixels down their customer’s throats. “No thank you Canon. I’ll stick with my fantastic 5D instead” I yell back.
I’d spend my whole tax refund plus a bit for a 21mp 1DsMIV despite my wife’s kicking and screaming!
Very bad taste.
Were talking about Canon here, and with Canon it is always going to be more MP.
I just hope we can get the 1Ds4 out so for the rest of us, we can get a 5D3 sooner.
On a sad note Galbraith just tested the 1D4 AF and it has some issues.
http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=7-10048-10484
Yea agreed Ty. I think the 40d, 5d, and 5d mk ii are the best cameras offered by canon so far. If the 5d series had a good AF system, that would have been fantastic.
Lowering MP to 14-18 on a FF while improving sensor technology would be a step forward for image quality…
please canon not 32mp!!
rg is a goon
It not a camera, there are new lenses (prime) that will be tested at the game… stay tuned …
1Ds4 sensor prototype has been tested in Tohoku. It’s new auto focus and noise reduction algorithms on camera processor are still in testing.
Canon kicks Nikon’s A$$!!!
I dont think more MP is an issue… nikon’s move to stay with 12 mp is great but it does not offer flexibility to crop.
On this account, I do think that canon should make a better product differentiation.
this I say as there is no choice for us who wanted the best image quality (ie full frame) and has the features that present in the 1series body like the pro auto focus, sealing or the framerates. Hopefully the 5DIII will answer all our doubts like the 5DII did before (which works fine except AF in low light lol)
You would sell your IV after having it for a month, knowing the s-model IV would come within 6 months or so? Nice. Wish I had that money :)
Indeed, God rest his soul. We keep his family in our thoughts and prayers.
The 1Ds line has always been a studio and landscape camera – of course they are going to increase the MPs. People at that level don’t really care about high ISO performance – remember this camera is going to compete with medium format backs with 40+ MPs.
Why are you so sure? seems like a perfect event to test and showcase a new product, not all canon users are Professionals like you.
I am looking forward to a competitor against the 14-24G from Nikon. Maybe even a 24-70IS?
Seriously, what are you trying to achieve here? All you do is telling people to shut up or insulting them?
If you are unwilling or incapable of having a civilized conversation, I suggest you leave.
And please remember: God loves you anyway and there is nothing you can do about it. :)
After Galbraith’s AF tests, the new camera can only be the 1D Mk V. ;)
without one, the other would sit and do nothing.
thank the world for both. and especially for panasonic for the canon s90.
Tape.
Black tape is the answer to your query.
sorry, there are only primes that I confirmed.
CR3 reflects the source of the information noob.
3D of course. :P
G11
lol Alex either you’re kidding or you’re a retard.
Also it’s too rainy/snowy here in Vancouver to see what any body someone is using. They’re all wrapped in rain bags.
What about a 3D?
I am happy people know what sarcasm is… Lot’s of trolls here today
PS it’s the 9D thats coming out
You’re the noob, noob.
No you are!
Noob.
blah blah blah
You’re ALL noobs. Bow before my 1337 non-noobness!
Shuddup Son. Noob.
Why not. With a 24-70 2.8L IS attached!
LOL
35mm 1.4 II?
400mm 5.6 IS?
500mm 4.0 IS II?
It’s a Rebel T3i, I know it.
Wow.. thats dark but funny
Who says it has to have a mirror? EF lens mount, mirrorless like with the new 4/3rds boys, but with a square 36x36mm sensor. Radical new camera for the 21st century, almost the old medium format Canon that Canon hinted about so many times before in the 90s.
Ha ha, right along with a 1D mk5 ;]
i dont like bklooger either…
Not saying it wouldn’t be nice, but there is a catch. There usually is. Very few EF lenses (TS-E line comes to mind) actually cover a 36x36mm area. They would have to redesign almost the whole line-up or introduce a new mount. Neither sounds like a viable option. Not anytime soon.
You have to invent some new geometry to fit 36x36mm inside the image circle of an EF-lens.
Canon lens are made for 45mm diameter picture circle. 36 X36 mm requires 51mm circle. So that render ALL Canon lens becomes useless with the new 36 X36 mm camera. I doubt that Canon will make a new set of lens for the new 36 X36 mm format. Therefore in my opinion, the 36 X36 mm becomes “mission impossible”.
Only one flaw in this reasoning. More MP means less dynamic range. So while it would compete with digital backs in terms of resolution, it would be left in dust where DR is of concern.
But as we all know, Canon will put 32MP into the newest 1Ds, no matter what the downsides are.
I’ll not be surprised if a 1Ds4 has 32MP, or 36MP, or even 40MP! The latter is ~ = to the pixel density of the 7D. f/8 peak performance for a FF sensor is gonna peak around 34MP, which won’t stop Canon from pushing it as high as 40; just open up the lens a bit more like required on the 7D.
After all, f/8 perf. peak for 1.6 crop is ~14MP yet the 7D’s 18MP nets an improvement in
-apparent- image quality.
If you’re up for studying the numbers, R Clark has updated his info in January.
there’s a lot of good studying there for the technically minded.
http://www.clarkvision.com/articles/digital.sensor.performance.summary/index.html
I’m still happy w my 40D and 5Dm2 does well too but wish it were less noisey in RAW. Heck, I like my old XTi/XSi as well.
The new T2i should be very close to 7D for IQ and offers a great bargain for features if it doesn’t have some serious IQ flaw once it’s in production.
We really need some new glass to keep up to these sensors too.
The far corners would be a problem, and lens shades (especially the cut-out ones). Otherwise all EF FF lenses would cover 36x36mm.
Instead of a mega-evil, maybe one could get away with a fixed, half-transparent mirror design, like the old EOS RT? That would be way cooler.
And a 2000D and 20 new powershots, including one with MP3 player ;-)
The EPA Chief Photographer at Vancouver says that *one* of the bodies he has agreed to use alongside his standard-issue 1D4 *does not* have an integrated vertical grip… I can’t say more since that’s all he said via his FB acct. Feel free to assign CR0 to this, I’m just repeating what I’ve read.
Still hoping for that mythical DRebel XF body to replace the xxD at that price-point…
A 1Ds4 with a bit of black tape on would be difficult to distinguish from a 1D4 or 1Ds3.
That makes it more likely that the body being tested is either a 60D or even 3D. Or it is just a pre-series 2Ti that the beta tester kept.
This 0wnage is yet again brought to you by: Camgirl76. Delighting you always.
G11 buyers are more easily fooled than pro buyers and can’t grasp the fact that more MP = more detail and same noise.
All except the TS-E lenses, you mean. You’d fit a 47x47mm sensor in the 67mm image circle of new new TS-E lenses.
The RT was made as a test camera and the tech eventually put in a version of the 1n, it’s main advantage was essentially potential for continuous shooting speed and no mirror black out. I seriously doubt it making a reappearance in a camera aimed at studio/commercial high resolution work, for 2 reasons, the main being that that design comes with a big big draw back, in that you lose a stop or more of light (and the viewfinder is also a little dim as it’s only having a portion of the light from the lens reflected up to it). The second being canon tend to play it fairly safe at the top end of their line up these days, so if they were going to try re-introducing it I’d expect it in some other model first so they can gauge how well it’s recieved.
For the lulz?
Could we please get a 1ds that get us back to iso 25 and lower. With 5000ws of studiolights who needs high iso?
God? Why do you stupid americunts always have to talk about GOD? What if he was an atheist?
It would be awsome if the 1DsIV could do sRaw at a higher frame rate, eg 16mp @ 10fps as well as the expected 32mp @ 5fps
And why do God haters always use such foul language?
The 1DIV and 1DIII look almost identical, i guess the 1Ds will be the same. The rumoured 60D is alledged to have a completly new bidy styling, so this is the obvious choice
1dsIV :D:D
that s90 got me tempted to go back and buy a point and shoot now
they don’t.
I work in one of the Hotels in Vancouver Downtown area & !lucky me! we had a contract with Media for the Olympics =)
CNN, BBC, Yahoo Sports, EPA and so on.
Having been asking them a lot of questions had mainly the same answers about bodies that they use.
So the 1D MarkIV is one of the most popular as well as 5D MarkII for sure. By the way they say a lot of good words about !7D!. However a couple of guys have stickers on the names of their camera-bodies (I’ve seen 2 of them so far – they are working with one of the European Agencies). Cause of extreme curiosity asked one of them what it is for – because there is noway to see the name of the camera. He said they do it for traveling not to scratch it. Weird answer, isn’t it? It looks just like 1d MarkIV & that’s the model he mentioned when I asked, however as I said I am not sure.
I think DR has been improving despite sensel densities increasing though.
Actually, there is another option, which should work, with standard EF lenses: a 31mmx39mm sensor. The trick is not to use all of the sensor (the corners would be out of the 43.3mm image circle safely covered by EF lenses).
With a sensor 30.7×38.7 mm sensor of 4600×5800 pixels you can have take several different crops, all within the same “safe” diagonal:
* 3:2 (5400×3600 pixels, 36.0×24.0 mm, diag. 43.3mm)
* 4:3 (5200×3900 pixels, 34.7×26.0 mm, diag. 43.3mm)
* 2:1 (5800×2900 pixels, 38.7×19.3 mm, diag. 43.2mm)
* 16:9 (5650×3178 pixels, 37.7×21.2 mm, diag. 43.2mm)
* 1:1 (4600×4600 pixels, 30.7×30.7 mm, diag. 43.3mm)
Note that the extreme corners of the sensor are never covered, which makes sense because the lenses cannot cover them.
This would make a very, very interesting camera for me, as it would allow to take photos in all the most common formats without “wasting” lens resolution.
The mirror and the prism might be a challenge, given that they need to cover more than the usual 36×24 mm. EVIL remains an option of course.
It has indeed: the 18MP 7D (with its 18MP) has a significantly better DR than the 15MP 50D, which was better than the 10MP 40D (see http://www.dxomark.com/ if you don’t believe me. And DXO isn’t known to be “Canon friendly” in any way). Better low-light ISO too.
I agree that we are not going to see it in the 1Ds4 – it simply does not belong there. The only reason I mentioned it here is that a fixed mirror would take up less space and could therefore make it possible to introduce a larger, square sensor.
Nevertheless, a high-speed professional camera like an 1D4-RT it could be cool. With the recent progress in noise suppression loosing 1 stop in brightness is acceptable. Continuous AF tracking and no mirror blackout would be an advantage for fast moving objects. There is even the potential for real high performance AF in video mode!
That is a really cool idea.
Same detail and more noise you mean.
Low light ISO and dynamic range both go back to the intrinsic noise level of the sensor. This has been improving steadily, and the astronimic pixel densities we are seeing today are mostly a result of these improvements.
Now that pixel densities have caught up with the diffraction limit for reasonable apertures, maybe we can stop the megapixel race and just work on quality ?!?
The 1Ds and 1D has always looked almost identical. If Canon were to be testing the 1Ds mark iv, they would just badge it as 1d mark iv, and no body will know the difference.
It probably won’t… As fps has something to do with mirror size as well. The larger the mirror (full frame = larger mirror than APS-C or -H), the slower it moves. I think if they make it 5-6 FPS, that’s the best it can do without breaking. Continuous mirror-up shooting might be cool though.
I agree with you, 18MP for APS-C are enough, but I suspect that Canon might want to push resolution further anyway. The 18MP 7D’s DLA is around f/6.3. A 24MP APS-C sensor’s DLA would be around f/5.6 — still reasonable if you have good primes or f/2.8 zooms. Of course you’d need those anyway to resolve that many pixels.
Theoretically, Canon could even go further: if you accept a DLA of f/4, you can go over 40MP on APS-C. I suspect this is too much even for pixel-loving Canon.
My *guess* is that Canon will keep increasing APS-C resolution until 25-30 MP. That’s probably 2 more generations: 7D Mk2 around 22-24MP, and 7d Mk3 around 26-28MP. Just a guess of course.
The full-frame Canon EOS-1V film SLR disagrees with you sir.
Amen brother this is not mentioned enough.
could you also help ask the mark iv users if the AF works well?
Thanks! that would set many potential purchasers’ minds at ease after the scathing Galbraith article
9D: I wish. Like everyone has noticed, we’re overdue for a 1Ds4 because of the relatively mediocre low-iso performance of the 1D4.
I suspect Canon is going to switch between updating the xxD line and the 7D line. When Nikon responds with a D400 or D300x, Canon will counter with a xxD with improved image quality (more megapixels same noise or same megapixels less noise) then update with a 600D. When the D400/D400s comes out, Canon will counter with a 7D Mark 2, then update with a 650D for the Rebel lines.
If Canon does this it’ll be a bit more difficult for Nikon to hit the target on countering Canon with the Dx00 line, since the target to counter constantly switches. One is priced lower than the Dx00, the other is priced the same, and the performance quality on both cameras will constantly shift.
It would be nice to get a 60D with usable 6400 ISO, then get a 7D Mark 2 with the same usable 6400 ISO, but with a resolution upgrade. If 6400 looks outlandish to you, while 3200 is pretty noisy on the 500D, I think the noise levels are acceptable for general use, so it’s just a one-stop increase. Your mileage may vary: you may refuse to go above 800 ISO, for example.
sketchy.
Not to mention the Nikon D3s!!
Why not an affordable 400mm f/5.6? :”)
** I wanted to say 500mm instead of 400.
Too expensive.
At the image level: more detail, same noise.
Not if it’s an EVIL…
The mirror on the 1D4 (or 1D3) is already full sized. Only the sensor is cropped.
My condolences (for having to live in Vancouver that is).
Too expensive is what people said about FF sensors not so long ago.
You would need a pretty large pentaprism, though. The selected format could be displayed in the viewfinder by LEDs, similar to the AF spots.
Imagine what a Canon mp3 player could do!
That’s pretty interesting, maybe we’ll be getting a 1Ds o.O
RG has credibility, something you lack.
Uh, no, sorry. The 1V has the AF to consistently maintain 10FPS until you run out of film; the D3 hardly reaches 9FPS in real-life continuous AF shooting.
I thought we were talking about mirrors, not metering.
I know right? Hard as hell to try and get some beer after dark around there (and expensive as all hell too)
One starts with 5 and another is a gozilla (hint hint: sigma has one) ;)
Stay tuned….
I have a Canon EOS-1n RS; the film SLR with the pelical mirror.
The 1n RS will do 10fps, however, in RS there is NO autofocus.
When RS mode is enabled the sub-mirror moves out of the way and stays there.
Now that doesn’t mean Canon couldn’t/wouldn’t improve on the pelical mirror design, but the design was far from perfect.
Also, cleaning the pelical mirror was VERY difficult. I have done!
Furthermore, with a **fixed** pelical mirror in the way, how would one clean the sensor?
Don’t get me wrong; I’d love to see a dSLR camera with a pelical mirror, I just can’t see it happening; bit like the 3D, the fanboys want it, Canon ain’t gonna’ make it.
3/2 press release? right after olympics and right before wppi?
it seems to me that Canon is beginning to market its DSLR range to match Nikon’s. If you look at each companies’ available offerings i think that – assuming a new DsSLR is just around the corner – it will be a rival to Nikon’s high end cameras. In short, it won’t be a 60D but more probably a 1DS mk IV. I think i’m being pragmatic here: i speak as someone who’d like a DSLR priced between the new 550D and the 7D; certainly a camera with weather sealing is what i’m after.
I speak as a keen amateur so I welcome your comments…
I’m still saying it today! Take a look at the medium format backs to see how much a sensor that size will cost. The cost of a prism would be negligible by comparison.
Hush
I’m out of popcorn. Does anyone have some to spare?
Don’t blow your head up.
Canon’s first cameras used Nikkor lenses. Without Nikon, Canon would be nothing!
****** *** * * * * * * * **** ** *<–does this count???
“So if anyone attending the Olympics sees anything attached to a big white lens that looks suspicious, send me a picture of it.”
I’m not sure if this is what you’re looking for, but I’ve seen at least three of these bodies.
http://gallery.dogearedphotos.ca/p442695445/h3be35824#h3be35824
If this holds up, it certainly indicates a new direction for Canon.
KNEW IT!! It’s the new Cankon D1DsxM4N!!!I have been waiting for this for years!!!
wut the crap? i’d hate to clean the bugs off of that lens.
I’ve been working with a few photographers at the Olympics today, let me just say that the 1Ds MKIV is in town (Vancouver) and not just on the roof of a BMW Mini.
Thanks for confirming that, I wasn’t sure if AF was available in the RS, I’d imagine the AF sensor would struggle even if the implemented it now as the light it receives would be a lot less then with a standers mirror.
I know that they used the technology even before the EOS system in a version of the F-1, obviously this is before AF, but it was capable of around 14 fps, and the motor drive + battery was like 2x or more the size of the camera itself
what about more detail, more noise.
Not metering, but continuous AF.
As far as the Media-guys say – the only thing that they are not satisfied with is the picture-quality on the high ISO, mainly they work indoor (hockey games). D3s apparently does a better job, however the 1d MarkIV has 1080p movie-mode.
But as far as I know – no complaints about the focusing, I’ve read the review that U are talking about.. Will ask the Media, to give U a better idea.
U gonna be kiddin me! lol
Have seen this Mini on Davie st this morning =)
It’s a plastic toy guys! You made me laugh! Thanx for fun time!
Hey idiot…we were founded by Puritans. A religious group driven out of Europe because their ideas and practices were not popular. America was founded on the idea of Freedom…including religious freedom.
Last night at the Short Track Speed Skating, there was a photographer using what looked like a 7D. His 1D was laying in front of him and he was snapping picture of Apolo Ohno with his APSC camera. I know that the potential 60D is not a 7D but, if there is a 60D on the horizon, it could certainly be getting tested in Vancouver.
the camera body is practically bigger than the rims on that car. of course we know is plastic. lol. were just messn around.
haha thats great! at least the focusing appears fine. strange how people’s expectations increase ever so quickly. and here we are plebians who thought the mark iv’s high iso performance was something that would make any increase in iso in real world conditions unnecesary given the stunning shots being posted.
keep up the insider reports! haha
I did not say it was impossible, but _if_ they make it 5 FPS at full resolution, i think there is a technical problem with higher frequencies. Double speed would be nice, but the 1V needed the extra motor booster to make it possible… If they don’t build that into the 1Ds4 because of whatever reason, it’ll stay at 5 FPS. If it can reach 8 FPS or more, then they’re likely to throw in a double DIGIC, and use all that speed even at full res. It’d be a nice show-stealer :P
Any sign of a *60d*?
actually, more detail, less noise:
http://bit.ly/4TYqY7
Any more news on a potential 1Ds4??????
> Medium Size (16MP) @ 10fps
Now that sounds cool and the way like it should be – 1Ds being a master camera in every respect, not just a different camera where only choice being speed vs megapixels. This also would justify the price difference, 1D just being a subset of 1Ds.
I just hope it’s a 60D that would be awesome!
But one question:
Why Vancouver?
Has this anything to do with the Olympics?^^
I mean, is there anything special in Vancouver for Canon that they are testing a new Camera there?
After all, Canon still is Japanese ;)
I don’t think there will ever be a new xxD body again. It seems Canon es doing the same thing as Nikon: Basic bodies made of plastic even for the so-so advanced amateur (550D for example) and then if you want a magnesium body and weather sealing in a 1.6x sensor body: Get the 7D :P
hokar, we have Olympics here. 250.000 visitors. The whole city is packed! Sport events are everywhere. If there’s any better place on the Earth right now to test a new camera – I’d be glad to hear it from U lol
well, that’s kinda wrong statement. Every single photographer I’ve seen here carries @ least 3 camera-bodies… If they do it as U say – they’ll have problems with choosing the right one, lol
I thought it was a laboratory test..
If it is an outdoortest ok, that something completely different, then it makes sense.
There are many cleaning service providers in Vancouver and adjoining areas offering diverse cleaning services of various respects. Some of the common cleaning services offered by them include carpet cleaning, upholstery service, furnace and duct cleaning etc.
