  • On the right side of the “ON” marking there’s a little space… would that be a viewfinder curtain like they have in the D700???

  • M.Fn = “Movie function”? Recording start/stop would make sense near the shutter button. And I don’t see a movie mode on the left dial.

  • I’d go with that… the only thing you access regularly is the playback, and theres already a dedicated button for that so i dont see why canon would think we need a customizable button.

    Also, please feel free to kill scene and “creative zone” mode. How dreadful they are anyway!

  • No it doesnt… I dont need my left hand to power up my 1D. So by the time I bring it to my eye, the switch has been turned on and it’s ready to shoot.

  • I’m just happy some more substantive rumors are coming to light. I’m waiting patiently for the 25th or the 1st (whatever the date is) and then making my decision on that day.

    d300s or whatever Canon comes up with…

  • On/Off button reminds me of a Rebel, but maybe it’ll be a good change? But Canon…how about you keep your pop-up flash and add some weather-sealing, eh? (Assuming this is the 7D) I need to see these cameras so I can make a flippin’ decision between the 7D or the 5D Mark II!

  • I’ll think dedicated video button (M.Fn.??)
    can’t really think of new SLRs coming up without video, gone are the days of the excuse that it costs or cannot be done.

    Besides, another take on M.Fn. (my own take, don’t make this another rumor) is that it can be a dedicated button for mirror up/down. bring mirror up, take as many shots / video as you want (in LV mode) and finally bring mirror down. That can give us quite a nice burst

  • Surely M.fn is more likely to be something like memory function rather than movie function? From memory Pentax have a green button in roughly the same spot to quickly return to program AE for a shot. Something similar would be a good feature, though M.fn could mean other settings are saved rather than just going to Program mode.

    Rapid reaction controls => a more rapid camera than 5D?

    I’m in the camp that would like a sporty full frame – though I would like to keep the video.

  • yeah, unless you use liveview (in which case I don’t know how long the screen stays active), there’s no reason to ever really turn your camera off

  • that’s what they all say. last I heard Nikonos were whining about lack of significant upgrade in 300s and also about all the junk D5000’s out there (2nd recall anyone?)

  • There’s no way Canon will give us better AF. If 5DII didn’t get it, 7D/60D will never get it… People just need to be more realistic! Stop dreaming… if you want pro-AF like 1d3/d3x/d3, jump to nikon, d700 or d300 both have pro-AF!

  • never i turn my camera off. but to be honest: the rebel series have the power switch on the other side of the viewfinder, so that one can turn it on with the thumb too. the remark of the OP is somehow true, you would need both hand to power on the camera

  • Is it just me or does the top plate size suggest a smaller camera body than the 5DII or even 50D?

    Normalizing to the size of the flash hotshoe (which isn’t going to change), it seems to me this camera is going to be a bit more compact.

    I admit it’s totally a guess though because it’s hard to find a 5DII or 50D image taken with exactly the same angle and focal length.

  • Your 40D isn’t full frame. If the 5D2 had all cross-type points like the 40D and the points covered the same amount of the frame, no one would be complaining.

  • very interesting! but im keeping my fingers crossed. i dont think canon is stupid enough to release a camera which can also kill the 5d2. i guess it will still be a disappointing performer which trails behind the d300s or even the d90. but who knows, maybe canon is really getting desperate… i really hope so

  • As an owner of an XTi, 40D and 5DII, I dare say that is certainly larger than a Rebel. The rebels simply don’t have enough room across the top for a knob and a normal size LCD.

  • Really? I can’t imagine a significant improvement to the D300s. I just wish the D300s was cheaper.

  • First the “7d mark” and now “the top”. Are they gonna publish the camera one piece at the time?

  • hmm … comparing the image with my 5DmkII I would say you are right. I don’t know how to explain it in english, but the hot shoe on the 5D is approx. 1cm higher than the program wheel. On the image above, it’s on the same level.

    That would result in a smaller pentaprism chrystal, which means smaller mirror and that means: not FF

  • Now, thats a advertising idea. We had the “Moon for the 5d MK II, the 7D could be revealed one piece at a time.

    Since this was on a Taiwan website, it makes one wonder where the camera will be assembled. Perhaps the top is assembled in Taiwan.

  • Excellent hoefully they bring out an excellent EF-S lens at the same time a new and much improved 17-85 IS USM or a new 17/18-105 IS USM, with ring usm. Brilliant!

    We are getting a lot of aggressive comments and ‘back and forths’ not sure if its the caffeine or the hell bent desire for a nice release from canon. Either way I’m not sure this is the place to vent your frustration with each other.

    Once I even took a picture on my direct print button and used it as desktop wallpaper (I also directly printed it so I could hang one on the wall).

  • Good point. For righties, a left-sided power button would stink. It will always require two handed operation.

  • But, so far movie mode is always through the LCD, not the viewfinder (obviously because of the need to flip the mirror), so movie mode near the shutter release is not a big help.

  • I’m not so sure. Video is always shot with the LCD, so having movie on/off so far forward is not a help. Also, to date anyways, movie button has always been the red “record” circle.

  • Ideally, the M.Fn button would be a “shift” key of sorts, allowing you to change shutter, ISO, and aperature for movie mode without adjusting your photo presets. Still, it’s not clear if there will be any manual movie control on the next DSLR.

  • possibly M-fn stands for Mirror-function..? What if canon does release a fixed mirror (high fps)(Aps-H?) after all?

  • I don’t think Canon Taiwan has the technique or capacity to produce DSLR. Otherwise, 1000d/500d would have been made in Taiwan already.

  • Movie-function could imply a toggle to use the shutter button both for stills and video.

    If that means a system (a kind of EFV) that allows to use the viewfinder while recording video I would be very happy…

  • The 5DII doesn’t have a “video button” anywhere…. ? Not sure where you’re goign with this.

  • Look closely at the scene selection dial, auto modes look to have been cloned out? Cant tell with compression but looks odd…

  • Yep, I doubt they would ditch those… lots of amateurs buy into the XXD range and probably use the JPEG modes a lot.

  • I found this on a Canon Thread about the EOS 1V.

    “For a start the camera records the number of rolls that have been loaded into the body. Just turn the Camera on and press the M.Fn button found under the side flap.” Somehow I don’t think this relates, but interesting nonetheless.

  • Well, they could add 1080p video, FF, and lose the Nikon mount and out a EF mount on it and that would improve it a lot!

  • This is a 60D top. I think the 7D is wishful thinking but I hope I’m proven wrong. Also, I hope that Nikon burns to the ground and Canon builds its empire upon the smoldering ashes.

  • dont think its a 7d…the CA mode is still there which doesnt quite suit a semipro camera imho…probably the 60d…but i am new to all of this so i might just be waaaaaaay off base here

  • Sounds good to me, I don’t want a full frame body. I would love a Canon version of the D300s. ;-)

    I think there’s predominantly two seperate markets here, those who want it to compete with the D700, and those who want it to compete with the D300s. I wonder which one it will be?

  • 60D blows the D300s away! And the 7D blows the D700. So what will Nikon do against the 5D?

    He nailed the M-Fn (Multi-Function) button: “lastly, an all-new, pleasantly surprising “feature” that would bring a smile to all the Canon loyalists”.

    We also know that this camera must have DIGIC V, because DIGIC IV doesn’t support an M-Fn. button, AFAWK. He called that too.

    The rest of his info can’t be confirmed from what we have now, but it’s certainly interesting.

    Also, I think this will be the 7D, not the 60D, unless they’re bringing the AF-Off button into the xxD range, which seems a bit odd.

  • Just to add to this thread. I have never accidentally turned off my 1D3, or any of the other canon cameras I have used, same could not be said of a certain other prominent camera brand, I like the current position of the switch because it is easy to find with the without looking, but the switch itself is stiff enough that finding it gently brushing it will not affect settings, however once found it is easy to switch the camera between using the large wheel for compensation/aperture and not.

  • Agree, coming from a nikon where the on/off was under the shutter release. I found the placement of the on/off on my 50D badly positioned.

  • My guess is it’s not a 60D, mostly based on the lack of scene modes on the dial. Canon tends to market the xxD series at the low-end pro and high-end amateur markets at the same time, and the latter want (or at least Canon thinks they want) scene modes.

  • They is no such thing as Canon Tw. Canon outsource these jobs to others firms in Tw who are capable and capacity of these productions.

  • Didn’t read through this all, but everybody does realize that Canon has a 2.8″ fully articulating screen now AND they are the only major manufacturer without an articulating-screen DSLR.

    are you joking? Digics are OMAP-based chips, anything which can be done on a smartphone could be done with a Digic4. So Digic4 really doesnt need an upgrade to support an additional button…

  • I’d buy it if the off button was 1.75mm over to the left and down .3mm, otherwise I’m switching to the Apple iPhone and selling all my Canon gear!

  • My thought is that DIGIC4 would need an upgrade to support the additional button from a hardware perspective. Sure, the software can handle extra options and the like, but how do they get the electrical signal from the button into the DIGIC4 chip? It doesn’t seem likely that they’d have spare traces available. However, I’m not an embedded circuitry engineer, so I’m not an expert in this. My speculation is as good as yours.

  • After coming up from bed and reading the rumor updates, this is my personal vote about the rumors and the images carefully leaked from Canon:

    * 60D will be released as a more “professional” 7D (50D has likely been a failure in sales, despite the 25% price drop in europe).

    * APS-C marketed as improved in performance, but only slightly less pixel count (14.7MP?) and thus nearly as bad as the 50D. Still high noise at low ISO settings in shadows.

    * Better AF (50D already was better that 5D mkII) but not up to the 1D level (19 AF points, all cross-type?).

    * Faster FPS (not up to 1D mkIII level, of course).

    * Top noch LCD, including tilt/swivel.

    * Video 1080p.

    Thus, in my case, I’ll stick with my (excelent enough) 450D until a more affordable FF is released or the 5D mkII is updated with better AF (at least, not all the points placed at the center of the frame) to justify the current price tag.

    I hope I’m wrong, since I really would like a FF (and buying some additional FF lenses not intended for crop bodies). I’m not willing to pay 1500 additional euros to Canon only for a few more square millimeters of sensor surface (the 5D mkII is nearly a 500D with a FF sensor). And as my nick tells (patiente) by the moment I don’t plan to switch into Nikon.

    Aren’t 4 Rebel models (T1i, XSi, XTi, & XS are half of Canon’s EOS lineup) enough cameras with scene modes on them?

  • For realz. Probably has model number or something on it. Makes me think it’s an official leak.

  • It’s probably a Multi-Function or maybe a Memory-Function button letting you select assigned presets of features – like they do on their camcorders with C.Fn1, C.Fn2 and C.Fn3 and the settings can be downloaded to the memory card for transfer to other cameras, very helpful in pro video production.

  • It’s a shame that the previous post doesn’t have a direct print button (or two).

    If it did people who get aggrevated over direct print button jokes could print out the post and keep it with them in their wallet for future reference.

  • 60D would be the one up against the D300s and the 5D2 competes with the D700 on price point. A 7D, if the rumor specs are true, would be Canon’s attempt to stick something in the middle and not go head to head with Nikon…again. And again, Canon will be ignoring those wanting a fast FF in the $2500 price range.

  • You may be right, though I hope you’re not. The two main upgrades I would like to see in the “60D” are significantly better AF and sensor performance (high ISO noise, dynamic range, high ISO color range, etc.). If only the AF is improved but the sensor performance is essentially the same, that would be disappointing.

    Other body improvements like video, better and tilting LCD, more FPS, and even eye-control AF are all nice but not a big deal for me and wouldn’t be enough to get me to upgrade.

    The one issue with the 7D being a higher end 60D is that the Best Buy rumor has the price at ~$2700. I think that’s way too high to be an APS-C body competing with the Nikon D300s.

    And so we continue to play the waiting game…

  • I read a insightful comment in a forum yesterday :

    – Nikon has a price-oriented line-up : they try to create the best MULTI-PURPOSE camera for a given price.

    – Canon has a market-segmentation strategy : they try to identify a market (ie. a SPECIFIC PURPOSE) and then design a camera that really matches that usage. No less, but certainly nothing more.

    To come back to your request of a D300s ‘killer’ : I don’t think Canon will ever offer the camera you want, because it would have to be multi-purpose.

    My gut feeling is that the next 60D will be targeted to the video people. Everything features related to video will be included (1080HD, swivel LCD, improved constrast focus ), but nothing more (no FPS, no FF, no 45-point AF, etc).

  • I think the M.Fn button stands for Mutha F***ing Nikon. You push it repeatedly when you see the better image quality coming from the Nikon cameras shooting all around you ! HA HA

    (I’m not instigating guys, just sending some love over from the Nikonrumors forums. I’m sure it’ll be a decent camera)

  • For the 7D I would be happy with one APS-H sensor (1.3 crop), as the 1D.

    I think it makes sense. In the same way that the 5D is the prosumer version of the 1Ds, the 7D could be the prosumer version of the 1D. Of course, it should have 1080p video.

    Then it would be useful for professionals that use L lenses, appreciate faster FPS and better focussing than the 5d, but without the need for a rugged construction, weather sealing, etc., as the 1D.

    If all we get is one APS-C sensor (1.6 crop), then it should be a 60D, not a 7D…, just a consumer version, without “professional” aspirations.

  • 400D sensor slightly better than 450D… beleive it if you want. But you are the only one thinking that…

  • I’ll be happy when they actually release these cameras, period. Regardless of what the bells and whistles are, I’m ready for the announcements to be made and scrap all this mystery.

    Any faith in the earlier rumor of an August 25th announcement or are we all on pins and needles until September 2nd?

  • This panel is from a 60D. Its not a 7D. The size and layout are much more like xxd then 5D. These changes look good in my eyes. Seems like they listened to people on the ergonomics at least. Now if it has better high ISO, they will really have something. They will not drop the MP below 50D. There is nothing wrong with the xxd series AF. When this sells for 1299 body only, it will be a great bargain.

  • Also, (its probably already been stated but) M.fn means Multi Function. No doubt about it.

  • The absense of any creative zone settings on the dial tells you it isnt an XXD camera of any sort.

    Its a step up from what Canon describes as ‘enthusiast’ level.

    The dial is, in fact, identical to the 5D II.

  • Yeah, I’m seeing a lot of pixelation around both the left side knob and the other lettering…could be a fake…

  • back in ancient times, ff-pentaptism were housed in much smaller bodies than a 50d without any problem. they were bigger too

  • as is the larger LCD.

    OTOH, the VF housing is like a 50D, sort of.

    Seems like an APS-H 7D or a super-advanced APS-C 7D.

  • the pixelation stuff is just jpg artifacts, that happens in tons of jpg images around areas of high detail transition.

    However, the WB overlap does seem hard to explain…. maybe it actually is an expert fake??

  • Its not a fake. Look at the the illumination button hole. Look at the pop up flash. Do you know any other camera that has those two things both in the same way? this is a mix between 5D and 50D, and it is a new product. Most likely it is a 60D, because of the pop up flash. The fact that this is at the manufacturing stage means an announcement will come soon. R&D would not leak this type of picture. The only thing I see photoshopped out is there might be some mode selections that have been cloned out. The reflections look odd. this makes me think maybe this is a Canon leak.

  • It are the pieces of the first ever 3D puzzle from Canon. A built-your-own DSLR. You can add as many Direct print buttons as you like!.

  • Finally, a replacement for my Minolta 7D!. The KM 7D has the On/Off switch in the same corner.

  • Well, I’d take that 60D just for those video features alone.

    I don’t see the big deal with the D300s, and I’m fine with a 50D against it for a lot less money. I do think Nikon has found a market segment with the D700 as a fast FF mid-price body, and so far, Canon is ignoring that market. Perhaps if Canon made a grip that boosted the fps on the 5D2 like the Nikon does they could get away with not making an all-new body for that market, but that would likely mean a MK III, so no time soon.

  • If is not a hoax, this looks to me as the new prosumer level X0D next gen DSLR from canon, 60D maybe ( you can tell by its CA creative auto mode in the dial ), canon also added back C3 button as requested by many pro-photographers and yessss … I was hoping for a better and improved cmos that can handle low ISO noise better than the stinky 15mp crop they had on the 50D (pixel density was too small for it to be possible), so 14.7mp sound a lot better IMO. finnally … i been saving my money for this camera to come out as i skipped the 50D due to its failure to produce High Quality Images, thanks GOD i dint take the plunge ! … the ON-Off button position change may suject complaints from people powering on the camera while hanging in their necks or maybe a slide down oled or lcd screen for low level and above head shots in live view ! …awsome ! way to go canon ! 60D here i come !

    In my head, I’m picturing Samuel L. Jackson saying he’s had it with these “mf’in buttons on this mf’in camera”.

  • I’m pumped, I’m excited but who can really justify the expense of these next generation bodies and or lenses when money is tight & the economy is slow to recover?…

  • There is plenty of money out there. Mainly in other people’s pockets, but if it a super fast FF or 1.3x between the 5D2 and 1D4, or a 60D (50D plus video+) I’m going to find the money somewhere.

  • Not everyone bought 4 SUV’s, a way bigger than needed house, a flat screen TV, and took lavish vacations over the past decade all on borrowed money.

  • I’ve just compared that picture to the top of my 50D, it looks very similar. I’m guessing that this is the top of the Canon 60D/50D replacement.

  • This looks legit, the other one has huge compression.

    This is the 7D BTW, no XXD camera will drop the dials for scene modes. Also the prism will be darker than the 5D but will have a pop up flash like the D700

  • Nobody seems to have noticed that the EXIF data says its from Photoshop CS4 Windows.

    It has no video on the dial which seems odd. I would expect all new canon dslrs to have video.

    I think the 7D will be a pro-sumer version of the 1D, that is, an APS-H with good frame rate, good AF etc. The 60D will simply be an upgraded 50D.

    It makes sense to me that Canon would make both the 60D and 7D, since they would have different places in the lineup. I would expect the 7D to be priced above the 60D and below the 5D2 or perhaps the 7D would be priced similar to the 5D2 since it wouldn’t take away from the 5D2’s strength (amazing FF image quality) but would add better action performance in the same price range.

  • 16MP, APS-H, Pro AF, smaller than 1D body, 8-10FPS, 1080P video, awesome ISO and IQ… Dude, my dream. It would go with my 1dmk2n perfectly. I move away from APS-C completely (40D now.)

  • Looks like offical leaks from Canon if you ask me. I’ve been wanting to but the 50D for a few months now but I’ve been holding off for the 60D/7D announcement.

    If they announce it in early September, when can we expect to see it on the shelves of out local camera store????

    Can anyone guess from past DSLR announcement experiernce??

    I have got a overseass trip coming up in early October and dont think I could go without a SLR!

    Come on Canon!!!! haha

  • from the other leak from best buy, I am guessing it will be in stores pretty soon. You will just have to be quick and travel a little to find one.

  • Did anybody notice that A-DEP or DEP has disappeared once again (like 5D and 5DMk2) on this camera top (so it looks like 7D)? A rarely used but fancy feature (compared to Nikon). With many lenses missing depth of field scales nowadays hard to acomplish. I would like to see an enhanced DEP where you can define the size of the circle of confusion.

  • And there are some comments (on other webpages) against integrated flashlight. So by chance you’ll get a (maybe not good) photo with this flash when you don’t have your external flishlight with you, and there is a pretty good chance to see an AF-light in this camera (which is missing in the 5DMk2 – AF-light is mandatory with high ISOs, but I would prefere to see a red AF-light)!

  • Good point. I second that. Also using credit cards involves to waste much mony in huge interest rates. Spending only one’s money means also more money available.

  • Likely it will not be soon in enough stock. Also, in case of huge modifications in some component, cautious people wait a few months before buying. In general this is always a good habit. Remember the D200 banding issue and the slow & poor Nikon reply to customers.

  • And remember, with a sensor like the Sony has to turn off the screen when your face gets near it, a touchscreen doesn’t necessarily mean your cheek would press buttons.

  • It’s great that now finally the rumors about dslr releases have started…a sure sign an announcement is imminent.

    This is what was missing before the Aug 19 announcement, and hence, no dslr’s then.

    It’s also pretty cool to read all of the responses from people who analyze every detail and know their stuff.

  • What’s with the display light button all the way to the right? That’s where the ISO button is on my 40D – which I like.

    It’s the easiest button to find just by touch and they put the seldom used (by me) display light button there?

  • i say it’s a 60d. IMHO, canon is trying to do a cohesive design style for their xxxxd, xxxd, xxd line for amateurs and serious amateurs(notice the pop up flash). so it’s likely the 7d will be very similar to 5d. i’ve used several nikons including the d700(too many buttons and small hand grip) and when it comes to great ergonomics-canon is it. one of the reasons i love canon.

  • Another detail is the longer top lcd which matches the 5D2. The 50D’s is shorter in length than this “new” model. And the ISO and the illuminate lcd buttons are in the same config as the 5D2.

  • It really is a different shape than any other top. It has this 2-tier slop where your right hand index finger will control the shutter and click wheel and M.fn button. Also the icon that kind of looks like a phi turned on its head is on the other side of the pentaprism.

  • This bears more of a family resemblance to the 5d rather than the 50d, which suggests this is more likely the 7d (if indeed we are getting both a 7d and 60d).

    Of course it could be that Canon is upgrading the xxD series, to where the 60d is far more of a prosumer model than the 50d, and designed to compete more against the D300s.

    Either way, this is an upper end model.

  • When can we expect to get our hands on one? If they announce it on Sept 1st, you could probably only but one from the camera stores in November.I think the announcement vs release time is quite long from memory.

    The 50D’s exposure mode dial has “basic zone” modes (the pictographic presets for various shooting requirements), while this one doesn’t much like the 5D.

  • I still maintain that manufacturers need to get there product out there sooner rather than later, because it takes time to build consumer awareness.

    There’s also another early mover advantage; how many people are placing orders for the D300s because it’s the only new kid in town right now among the higher end?

    While Canon is making its announcement of its new dslr’s, some will be taking pics with the D300s.

    Plus, some consumers will need time to budget for any new higher end dslr purchase.

    I’m sure Canon will release some great new dslr’s…it’s time for them to get them out there.

  • You idiots are gullible aren’t you!! york is right, just look at the dial and you’ll see where the black bleeds into the silver……..it only took me 3 seconds to figure out it was a fake.

  • I tend to agree. Also, the form factor plus pop-up flash leads me to believe this is a crop camera, not a full frame. I’m not sure the prism for a FF would fit given that pop-up flash.

  • The dial is photoshopped, it doesn’t mean it’s a fake, or that people are idiots. I would like to see you combine, or create, all these elements in photoshop. This would be extremely difficult.

  • 100% true. canon is known for its market segmentation strategy and they will continue doing so because they know that they have a good lens line up

  • Its exactly my thoughts about 60d or 7d. they will give you anything and everything, would add new gimmicks, may be some “world’s first” thingies, but no Pro AF, no High speed, No Pro weather seals, no 9 stop bracketing..coz they are all reserved for 1D. in canon’s books, these are for people who make money out of photograpy….so they can afford to pay a premium price for those features. again market segmentation

  • I disagree, if canon doesn’t introduce center pinch lens caps in addition to a D300 beater I’m still going to the dark side.

    Are you by any chance referring to the ring on the top edge of the dial? It could quite easily be like that because it’s reflective.

  • Actually probably not that difficult if you can take it from some other pictures and combine.

    Anyhow, assuming it is photoshopped, I still think it is reflection. Check dpreview pic’s of the top view of Canon camera’s…

    Anyhow probably a picture from the 7D as mentioned above:
    longer LCD with the “light up button” on the right hand side, like the 5D Mark II. The 50D has it on the left hand side of the LCD button row.

    What I am wondering is the pop up flash…now wondering if the 7d is full frame…perhaps APS-H?

  • To me, looking closely at the on/off switch, it looks like a fake. Just look at the colour difference. Probably off a rebel and pasted on top of image.

  • I dont know how to send email to the owner of the site but “embargo” is over on the 25th of this month for france so anouncment should be done by this day.

  • IMHO: This will be RS Style camera, i.e. like EOS-1N RS, id say Video and Speed Oriented, more like 1D Series (not 1Ds).
    Cause for every “camera type” for canon, theres 2 alternatives, one for Pro model, other for Prosumer (not to count xxxxD/xxxD series), so for 1Ds series theres 5D ones wich gives you FF cheapier than 1Ds, BUT theres no alternative for 1D series, wich will bring another 7D to compensate this.
    Specs are gona be:
    – 12-15mp
    – 8fps
    – RS Mirror
    – Video Mode 1080p 25fps (due NTSC specs)
    – 1.6 Crop
    – 9-12 AF Points with Good AF
    – No weather sealing

  • Am I the only one who could give a $^%& about 90 focus points covering every square millimeter of the frame? Give me a centerpoint autofocus that will track butterfly on crack and I’ll be happy as a clam.

  • all i can say is this top is from a 1,6 crop because the penta prism is to small to be a full frame, the 5D mark2 kills anything on the market for full frame and it goes like hot cake in shops. Canon needs a killer to replace the 50D

  • i second that motion for a af assist light… it really is a must have when shooting in low light.

    Nobody considered the last week of August for announcements – and xxD announcement have been made during that week.

  • Why should a FF-prism not work out with built-in flash? Nikon D700 does, some years ago even Canon EOS did have “film full frame” with pop-up flash (e.g. EOS 5, 10, 50/E, 30/33, 500/300,… – they all had matrix-exposure-metering in the viewfinder, some of them even had parts for eyecontrol (a feature gone with digital EOS-SLRs!) in the viewfinder).

  • Concerning FF: Maybe some like to shoot with ultra-wide lenses (you don’t get anything like Sigma 12-24mm with EF-S) and are not willing to pay more than twice (!) as much (compare 50D for about 900EUR to 5DMk2 which goes for about 2100EUR, except for video, RC1-ability, 30% more resolution (I think many would live with 12-15MPx on FF for better noise-performance) and a notch higher ISO (to mention the most obvious advantages of 5DMk2), there are quite some features less in a 5DMk2 (flash, AF-light, AF-crosstype-sensors, (A-)DEP). So maybe some wish (!) to have more value for less money at FF.

  • That would be far too optimistic but if it happened Nikon wouldn’t be able to sell another single D300.

  • The D300 wipes its butt with the 50D so why are you saying you are happy with teh latter? Very odd.

  • EF-S will be consigned to Rebels before too long. APS-H & FF are the way forward. If you spent a lot of money on EF-S lenses then chances are you never planned to have APS-H or FF anyway. If that’s as high as your ambitions go, then you’re better off sticking with the Rebels as new Rebel models will be as good as your old 40D or whatever, hell the 500D already is.

  • It’s true what you say. Canon need a 50D as a toned down 1D MkIII to rival the D300s, and also a 7D as a toned down 5DMkII to increase the product range and have a prosumer FF camera.

  • Me – we are not all poor. Some of us have the cash and are ready to spend it, on the right product of course.

  • In respect to fps-rates: I don’t get it, what’s so difficult to implement 25fps at the moment? Have a look at 500D and 5DMk2 which go with 30fps, maybe 20fps – as I understand these two frame-rates are piece of crap for the European-HD-market!

  • Of course a camera can have both FF and built-in flash.
    We just guess this camera top does not look like a FF viewfinder.

  • I find it amusing, one part at a time get released. A close up of the badge, the top section by itself. I think it makes it more exciting but I can’t help but wander if these are some deliberate Canon leaks. For instance, why couldn’t the guy who took the photo of the 7D badge take a photo of the complete camera?

    And to all you who call shenanigans because of the lack of movie mode on the dial, where is the movie mode on the dial of the 5D2?

  • It has been verified that the photo was exuded from a manufactory belonging to Canon in Taiwan and the photo was taken by its staff with his cell phone.

    After the photo was exposed on the forum, the author deleted the link for some professional ethics reasons in just a few hours.

    So I think the photo is reliable anyway.

  • it is 100% not a 60D: the 50D has panoramic, portrtaits and all these modes, this camera has (just like the 5D II) only A, CA, P, Av, Tv, M, 1, 2, 3 –so it is a new Camera! I would even say it is a 3D because the 5D /II has no M-Fn. button….very intersting picture. I just started saving for this camera :)

  • Just a thought, does anyone else think the curves of the top plate look similar to those of the 35mm 7E, they do to me ;)

  • Just looks like signs of a compressed image, which it is.
    Looks pretty real to me, details in photoshop always get pixleated and look a little out of place when the image is heavily compressed in rendering.

    If it were a photoshop, it would be a pretty poor idea for one, don’t think anyone would bother, this close to the release date.

  • That is not the same camera, as the picture of the top. The illumination button is not in the same place. Also no microphone holes which makes it a 50D.

  • I am totally surprised that there is no mention of the news that on 1st September there will be a new EF-S 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6.
