Misprint
Apparently the folks at Canon even want a 24-70 f/2.8L IS!

I vote misprint for now, even though they make it more than once.

Something more?

I'm on the road so I can't post any screenshots in case the correction is made by Canon.

thanks Ettore

  • looks like a major misprint on TWO places. but theres a “click here for full product specification” that links to the old brick

  • maybe an Easter Egg XD

    Let’s see what lens coming with 1D4 in OCT then, if there is any annoucement

  • Misprint. It’s coming out of the same data element used in the Flash file, explaining the multiple instances (i.e. a canned layout for any lens put there). Might still be a play for attention on the marketing dept’s part, but nevertheless not a quiet announcement.

  • When you click on “Shop Now”, it tells you that the “EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM” is “On Backorder”. No mention of “IS”.

    If even Canon don’t have it in stock, is it time for an updated model, or were they just too busy making the new lenses they announced last month?

  • All third parties save Amazon have it in stock, so probably just a fluctuation. T’would be nice of course, but seems unlikely.

  • I just looked at the picture of the lense and the 2.8 is printed on it as well.

    Might be something to this.

  • Canon ought to come up with an optically great, IS update to their old workhorse.

    Seems that despite all that hype, the Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8 is somewhat mediocre (see Photozone). It is a FAR CRY from the 14-24 f/2.8.

    So, this is Canon’s chance to prove themselves… :)

  • when you try to buy it from the link on that page, it does say “backordered”… somthing coming soon?

  • That what happens when the guys who are responsible for printers edit the Camera page….

    As much as I’d like to have a 24-70mm IS USM, this is a spelling (or ignorent) mistake since the camera’s picture belongs to 24-70mm NONIS version.

    oh yeah, Congratulate me guys. At last my 7d is going to be shipped soon (purchased from Adorama on sep 3rd). Now if only Amazon ships it to me as well…

  • I would imagine the IS version of the lens to be a little bit bulkier and have an IS switch on it.

    I know you guys are lusting after the possibility but the picture is the 24-70 NONIS

  • To repeat what “ossme” already pointed out; If you look closely at both pictures of their “Lens of the Month,” you can plainly see the lack of any IS button or IS markings on the old EF 24-70mm f2.8L lens.

    And I’m waiting (patiently?) too for my pre-ordered 7D from Amazon.ughhh! My Kingdom for a shipping update email!

    This EF 24-70mm f2.8L lens is 2nd on my list of to-get’s, right behind that beautiful Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II. I’m getting the 7D mostly for video, but it’s a great excuse to finally get back into my old photog-hobby.

  • I don’t feel like IS is necessary for 24-70mm lens at all. I got one and 5dII recently and feel that through this lens I don’t see any of my handshakes like my old Simga 50-150mm on 50D at all.

  • Depends on personal shooting situations I suppose. I would like the IS for low light work, though I agree its not as useful as IS on longer lenses

  • I have the 24-70 and it is a great piece of glass. Having IS on it would be HUGE!! Dunno if I would quickly plunk down another $1200 just for IS, but I would think about it.

  • I’m waiting for my 7D too. Because the 24-70/2,8 is very interesting lens in the 7D context I would like to discuss a little IS issue.

    IF you are not an IQ freak GOTO EXIT;

    {

    Conventional angular IS deteriorates IQ in comparable degree as poor quality Circ-Pol filter (two additional surfaces air/glass + aberrations of movable lens + loss of light) — when the optical axis is coaxial to the whole system (like when IS is OFF). When the system is in action the quality of image deteriorates even more because this increases chromatic aberration and astigmatism of whole lens.

    Buy a monopod and use it when applicable. Monopod is also excellent with IS on.}

    The IS and even better HIS are still effective in difficult lighting conditions because the noise becomes an issue.;

    :EXIT

  • 0.29MM is not “macro” by any stretch of imagination, it focuses fairly close but calling it a macro lens is purely and simple a misstatement of facts, even Canon does not call this a macro lens.

  • Nothing real is ideal. I see you are no technical man. So I permit myself for some technical remarks.

    Introducing an IS system into a well balanced and optimized lens compels designers for total redesign of whole lens. Active movable lens have to be placed in a strategic place to be capable of change the optics of remaining glasses. Besides, the active lens should be of strong refractive force and light enough to respond quickly. It’s comparatively easy to achieve this in the prime lenses but not in the zooms. So, to compensate deterioration of lens performance during redesign, old optics have to be improved. Anyway, optical characteristics would change considerably. Then thinking that we get 4 EV for money only is naivety. In my 24-105 f/4 L IS the stabilizing fails to operate around 0’C what is visible in the viewfinder. Probably the grease in gyro freezes, but this is another issue.

  • well, when they finally do make one, i’ll give them a load of money for one of those and a 5d m2.

    until then, i’m waiting. forget the 7d!
