Received a few emails over the last day or two that Canon would be announcing a new lens or two at the end of November. One lens will surely be the 70-200 f/2.8L IS II.
I called Canon Canada who is out of stock on them and they have no ETA.
I’m looking into info from Canon USA.
This is a CR1 rumor for the moment. We’ve never been super successful in getting lenses right, but we’re getting better after the 7D launch.

The Canon USA Rebate on the 70-200 f/2.8 IS runs until Jan 16. It would not make much sense to be running a sale if a product is not expected to be available, in fact, it would violate a number of laws.
Could be a way to clear out inventory? I’m sure they will fill all orders through Jan 16.
There was a rebate on this same lens earlier in the year, and also the year before. I don’t think that rebates are related to new models coming up…
Other than new IS, what types of things will likely be introduced? Nanocoating, more ED?
What?! I just bought the 70-200 2.8 IS L?! They better announce soon so I can return it if need be.
What do you guys believe will be new about the 70-200 2.8 IS II? And will it be the same price as the current 70-200? I’ve never watched how they discontinue items.

Probably improve the IQ at f/2.8 and control the flare a little better, whatever that takes.
I really like this lens, but my experience on APS-C is exactly what was reported on DPReview: f/2.8 is soft and lacking contrast on fine details. DPR reported that on FF it’s fine, but I cannot confirm that.
Many people are going to make purchasing decisions based on the more objective measurements of IQ, so Canon probably want to address those even if existing owners understand that the improvements are not going to make much difference in the real world. The f/2.8 softness is not really an issue except when measurebating or pixel-peeping. A little bit of unsharp-mask improves the contrast of fine details nicely and the prints I get from this lens at any aperture always look great. They have that “pop” that most lenses cannot give you.
And, yes, there is always something to be said for more image stabilisation. Maybe they’ll also make the IS a little less noisy for the benefit of videographers. The current lens has a bit of a clunk-and-whirr thing going on.
Perhaps a new 24-105L, this isn’t listed in the rebates and everyone seems to be out of stock.
Don’t worry, you’ll love the current version.
22-70 IS would be best. 22-105 would be pretty sweet.

I realize I’m probably in the minority here, but I would love for it to have AF Stop buttons. That would be the one feature that would cause me to buy it right away instead of waiting a few years assuming things either were improved or stayed the same compared to the current lens.

Canon EOS 7D is the DLSR that I choose in my 2010 shopping list. And I am looking forward the unveiling of Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Mark II.
Rebates have nothing to do with this.

They can sell both lenses at the same time and new one will get a new price, like $1999 :)
The main thing will be a much higher price, other than that, it could be a bit sharper. I’ve owned at least 3 of them, and they did not impress me, except with the weight.
The article said that Canon Canada was out of stock with no date for getting them. Canon Canada and Canon USA are part of Canon North America, and presumably pull items from the same warehouses, but it is possible that all stock is reserved for the USA rebates.
I’ve never seen them announce a new lens just as a rebate was happening on the existing one. They normally switch production over to a new design about the time it is announced, they do not keep making old versions of the same lens. They do make non IS versions, but I have never seen two competeting IS versions, and never expect to.
Expect the the lens to cost $2,500. There is no way that they will release a new and improved lens for the same price as its predecessor.
That would be nice, especially if it got the price of the original one without IS to around $1,100. I am not holding my breath.

Boyd, I got one 6 months ago and as long as its a good one they are incredible. I have almost made my money back in it’s abillity. Make sure it’s rock on st 2.8 and u will be okay.
when they just started to replace the 17-85 with the 15-85, I’d guess they are going from bottom-up for replacing the standard zoom-range lenses. So I’m hoping for a new and better 24-105, and especially maybe a 22-105 to fulfill the needs on APS-C camera’s as the 7D. 15-85 is in the kit for the 7D, but I am guessing people just want some L on the 7D. SO a 22-105 would be perfect. A perfect lens for use as a single lens, for outdoor-photographers in dirty conditions, in need of something light-weight, with a long range…
I have the current 70-200 IS, it has been my work horse lens for both my 20d and 5d Mark 2. it’s oe of the best zooms available second only in quality to my prime lenses.
This lens is definitely most useful on a full frame sensor though, it just have a more useful range at that point!
I think Canon will add new coatings like they have done to all their recent lenses that will improve sharpness and reduce flare.

35mm? No thanks. 50mm equivalent on 1.6x crop is 31mm, and a theoretically “ideal” normal is 27mm.
A 70-200 F2.8L IS that matches the quality of the 70-200 F4L IS is a great idea.
I gotta admit, I’d prefer flourite glass which reduces CA.
But I guess floride glass to reduce cavities between brushings would be a close second.

You can get tons lighter and smaller (and sharper with better stabilization) with the f/4 IS. But you aren’t going to get that in the f/2.8 IS unless you can somehow suspend the laws of physics.

Looking to add a tele to my 7D next jan and been a bit discouraged over reviews of the IQ on the 70-200 /f2.8 on crop bodies. Hopefully they fix that problem with the new lens and it comes out just after my bonus comes in :D

I would be kind of disappointed to see a 70-200 f/2.8 update. The lens is amazing as is and seems a pointless place to focus effort. I would much rather see a sharper and if possible, lighter and smaller 24-70 f/2.8 IS.
Except L lenses are made/designed for FF not APS-C.
Also, if you want something “lightweight, with a long range” go for EF-S. If you want something “a bit heavy, with a long range and excellent quality” go for L.

I understand 24mm is not wide enough for crop bodies. I used to use a 24-105 on my 40D, while 105 was pretty awesome, 24 wasn’t quite wide enough. 24-105 is an excellent range on a FF body though, which is what it’s designed for. 22mm is a strange number for FF too.
I just don’t see Canon making an L lens that caters for APS-C when they have EF-S for that (which FF users can’t use may I remind you).

Manual focus override, is not at all a replacement for AF Stop Buttons. AF Stops can be used in AI Servo mode to temporarily suspend focus tracking, such as when something comes between the lens and your subject.
The feature is found on competitors 70-200 models as well as Canon’s longer telephotos.
That said the same thing can be accomplished by using back button focus, and simply removing your thumb from the focus botton. But its always nice to have options.

That’s a lens that could probably do with an update. Digital is… unflattering.
Isn’t the 17-55 f/2.8 IS pretty good as an all around lens for the crop sensor? It doesn’t have the weatherproofing that the L series has but it’s got the aperture, the sharpness, the focal length to do what the 24-70 does for the FF. And it has IS to boot!

I agree with you. But my point was that my current 70-200mm IS is so good optically that I don’t really feel the need to change it. the only way I would change mine is if the new one is smaller. They can do this by introducing things like DO technology but I don’t think they would do it.

I’m now thinking about 2 bodies (7D and 5DmII) and both 24/105 and 70-200 IS USM as standard lenses on these bodies. This waty I don’t have to change too lot, and if I want wide, I just put the 24-105 on the 5DmII, if I want some more tele, I switch them again…
Dust and water are big concern for me; just broke a 17-85 on it, and no guarantee anymore…

I use the EF 35 f/2 on APC-C a lot. The fact that it is a few mm longer than a 50mm-equivalent or not ‘theoretically “ideal”‘ has never bothered me. 50mm is not ‘theoretically “ideal”‘ on FF, either, but we don’t have photographers clamouring for a 43.3mm lens for FF.
The whole “normal” lens thing is just a rule-of-thumb. In practice, it appears that slightly-longer-than-normal is preferred.

That’s really high. I think 2099 will be on point. They want this lens to sell a lot of copies. It’s not a niche lens like the new wide tilt/shift 24 and 17s.

EF 25 f/2 is very soft and has no IS. A new lens would make sense for better quality.
Ef-S has more space for the last lens and therefor better image quality by same weight.
17-55 is a perfect walkaround all purpose go anywhere do anything lens on EF-S. It is perfect in my opinion. Now the 15-85 has more range than the 24-105 and IS, and early signs that it is a very sharp lens. You wont’ have wide aperture for indoors, but as a nice day walk-around lens it could do the job. Still though, I don’t think I would want to own both lenses. The only thing that would trump the 17-55 f2.8IS on a an EF-S mount would be something like a 15-70 f2.8IS.
You want to buy new flashes? Flashes are desinged for 24-… zomms.
I think that Nikon lens is the new crown prince of the medium to tele zoom high aperture crowd. Canon would be wise to at least announce a new 70-200 2.8IS. It would help stem the bleeding a little and give the New 1D4 users a new friend.

I actually own the 28 1.8 and it is a little soft at 1.8 but it’s certainly not “crap”.
As for EF-S primes. They’re a crap idea. Why just sell to crop body dudes?

No, I would prefer a sharp lens with more tele range. DO lenses just add to the cost and (currently) suck bigtime. Only advantage is compactness and reduced weight.

True, a lot of people love the 17-55 range. In fact I got it for my first lens. However, I personally found the 55mm end too short. So I sold mine and got a 24-105. That was much better for me. I did miss the WA end, but I dealt with it. Then, when I switched to FF the 24-105 became perfect.
Therefore I agree a 15-70 2.8 IS (EF-S?) would make a great general crop zoom.
I won’t take the bill that comes with a constant f/4 aperture:)
How about a 200-500 4-5.6 with USM and IS?
Totally agree Justin, I had a chance to play with the D3s and the 70-200 II and it was a combination hard to beat! Hope Canon will move on this otherwise there will be less white lens at sports and fashion parade again… :)

I never said that it is not necessary nor I said that I don’t want canon to produce a new one. All I’m saying is that I’m not going to buy it because I don’t feel the need to do so.
But if a new one come then only a fool would choose the old one over the new one. (unless the new one got issues or the old one became really cheap).

I guess the utilisation of the new AF tracking modes in the 1D is what you want then. that apparently has subject memory and if something obscures your view the lens doesnt zip out of focus. Perhaps get a new body then ALL your lenses can do this.
I am looking for a 14-800 f/2 L USM IS. yes, this would mean a 400mm aperture at 800mm, so I guess the front element would be something like 1 m in diameter – the filter size would be massive! You would have to mount it on the top of a jeep or something… ok, maybe I dont actually want one…
70-200 multiplied by 1.5 gives us 105-300. So why Canon should not come up with 105-300 f/4 ?
Tamron makes a lighter, smaller, sharper 28-75 2.8…for 1/3 the $.
Right, if you think about it it makes the same logical sense as announcing the 1D4 early, which I think is the consensus right now. The announcement of the 70-200 alone will let people know that Canon are serious about this focal range and this market space. On the sidelines, photogs tend to have two cameras. A long telephoto prime and the 70-200 2.8 IS.
I hope they announce this soon because I’ve been holding off buying the original in anticipation of the ‘II’ version. I can borrow an original at any time, but frankly that copy disappoints me every time I use it, rarely giving me sharp results at f/2.8 on a FF 5DmkII. I have +20 focus compensation dialed in and it’s better than my first outing with it, but still it just isn’t very consistent, especially at a distance. I hope the ‘II’ is better.
Disagreed whole-heartedly. I’ve owned both and I was never happy with the Tamron. It could be sharp, but it was very inconsistent and terrible in the corners on a FF. Contrast and saturation weren’t nearly as good as the L lens either. I’m much happier with my 24-70 f/2.8L than I was with the Tammy.
Canon never follow Nikon with lens release, usually it is the other way round so I am bit sceptic about this lens comming out soon. It is the same news being passed around a year ago.
ugh your lens you borrowed sucked or you using 20+ compensation sucks… my copy is sharp at 2.8 with no comp on a 5d2

With these high ISO-Rates I don’t need F/2.8.
Another thing, even at 1.8 it isn’t terrible. The biggest problem is dealing with the relatively narrow DOF, which is always the case when you get below f/2.
Ummm no canon crop is 1.5. 1.6 and 1.3 are the crops for Canon. Also, it usually works the other way. Canon make lenses to suit FF (EF-S aside). So why make a lense based on what you’d get if you used a lens designed for FF on a crop? Doesn’t make sense.
That and 100-400 f/4 IS would be better range (designed for FF I might add).
How about a 96-272 while we’re making weird non traditional requests. :P
Seriously, if you don’t like f/2.8 why not just get something like the 70-200 f/4IS or the 100-400 IS?
Leave the 2.8 for people who want more DOF control and better speed in low light (even with those “high ISO rates”.

The point is that there’s no case for a hypothetical Canon APS-C “normal” to be 35mm, for the same reason that fast 58mm lenses never took off on FF.
50mm is popular on FF because it’s easier (and hence cheaper) to design for an SLR than a 43mm of the same speed.

You’ve miss understood what I said. Canon never “follow” Nikon with lens release. Several years down the line is not “follow” but natural evolution of user demand and marketing.

Umm, if you have 20 focus compensation dialed in, you either suck or your lens needs recalibrating.
Because with 100-400 you don’t have 280 f/4 and 100-400 should have a better IS. So why not a zoom instead of “EF 300 f/4” ? Canon has announced a lot of lenses where no rumor was talking about. Why should we discuss 70-200 every month? Here are a lot of traditional people owning 24-70 f/2.8 but a lot of new people are using 24-105 f/4. Hope Canon is reading this page too ;-)

Why oh WHY are you worried by something like 280mm not having f/4? :P Surely you’d prefer it to be… say 100-300, or 70-300 or something a bit less weird.
I’d go for a 150-500 actually… pity it almost certainly wouldn’t have constant aperture.
Oh and we discuss the 70-200 2.8L IS… probably because that’s the lens MOST people want upgraded. ;-)

B&H’s new catalog has “call/log-in” for the price of the existing lens. I think they know something. The only other lens with the “call/log-in” designation is the efs 17-85…
you loose a bit of light but it has that diffuser panel to go to 14mm

I just want to know for sure whether Canon is releasing an upgrade for the EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS in the near future! Am interested to buy the EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS but if the upgrade comes out in a month of so, I’ll wait for it.

What I want is an EF-S 45-125 2.8 IS USM, the equivalent of the EF 70-200. It would sell like hotcakes for $1600.
