To Owners of the PowerShot G10 digital camera

Thank you for using Canon products.

We have discovered that in rare instances, lines may appear in images captured by some units of the PowerShot G10 digital camera. Accordingly, we would like to convey the details and our service policy concerning this phenomenon.

  • Man… Canon has been releasing faulty cameras the past few years…

    With the economy the way it is and Nikon releasing better cameras Canon has to be more careful or else they will end up in a bad spot.

  • Well, then go out and buy a Nikon Point & Shoot made by Sanyo if you think it is better than the G10.

  • I’ll confirm this problem. My first G10 (bought in November) had a very noticeable single pixel black line that scratched through the upper left of every image.

    I returned/exchanged it and have not noticed the issue with the replacement.

  • I really like the G10 except for one thing, and I would have bought one already for times I dont want to take a DSLR with me, but once they removed the flip-out LCD from the G7 onward I lost interest. They put that on the SX1, but I prefer the features, size and feel of the G10…so I bought neither :(

    Maybe I can find a G6 on ebay.

  • Yeah – I never understood why Canon dropped the swivel-and-tilt LCD on the G series. :-(

  • The 5D2 was released with defects as well – banding, black dots, audio issues. The 5D had its mirror come loose. The Powershot S400 had memory card error issues. I seriously think quality control is very low at Canon.

  • Yes exactly! No other camera company ever releases cameras with defects or problems, not a single one, ever. Canon must really suck.

  • Oh, and remember when the G1 came out they called 3MP PROSUMER!!! HAHA. The G10 is 14MP. I do hope they put the swivel LCD back on the next one, I’d probably spring for it if they did.

  • Are the announced Tilt&Shift lenses really available to the public? Looks like they are not listed at B&H yet.

  • I don’t buy Nikon. I only use Canon. My 1D3 had focusing issues, the 50D had Err.99 problems, the 5D2 had black dots and now the G10 with yet another factory defect…

    Besides I am a pro, Ed, I don’t use point and shoots.

  • Some do more often than others because of their lack of quality control. Err 99 is another one. Canon has a lot of work to do if they want to ensure better quality control than Nikon.

  • Just took my G10 over to Canon, at Irvine, this morning.
    It’s not very dust tight apparently.
    The sensor accumulated debrie, of sorts.
    It’s very noticeable in the sky area.
    Because it is a cleaning, it’s not covered by the warranty.
    Go figure!

  • @ David- You are showing an unhealthy affection for a company. Don’t get me wrong- I love my cameras and my camera companies- but to suggest that people are wrong to point out a recent and troubling trend is ridiculous. Who cares how Canon’s recent QC issues compare to other camera companies, the fact is they seem to be occurring more often now than in the past. That is troubling, especially if you like Canon.

  • There is reasonable and there is not. To expect no flaws in the amount of products a company like Canon puts out is unreasable.

  • Which afffect some cameras of that model, not all of them, same goes for the G10 here. Do a google search for Nikon Defect and you see they have their own problems, Anonymous.

  • See my responce to your comment above…and do a google search on Nikon Defect if you think Canon is unique in that department.

  • Yes you should have bought a Nikon as they are indestructible and Nikon covers even dropping them in the ocean on warranty because they never break.

  • Hey that is heresy!!! How dare you post issues with Nikon, it is LIES I tell you, all LIES!!! Nikons are indestructible, unbreakable, and covered under an unlimtited warranty because Nikons cant break anyway, the Nikon repair men are more bored than Maytag repair men.

  • yeah but it’s a pentax…i’d rather live dangerously and take my chances with my unfocusable err99 locked up frozen mirror falling out black dot virgin mary and jesus appearing in the pixels canons thank you very much. now if nikon had virgin mary and jesus in the pixels i would definately switch given they are otherise indestructible.

  • I managed to lose mine at a holiday trip in 2007 – which wasn’t all that bad in respect to the camera, but to the memory card with some 500 pictures on it. :-(
    Well , eventually I got me at least a “new” G1 from eBay. ;-)

    I’ve been a Canon fan and user for almost my whole “photographical live”, owning six different Canon cameras in that time. But despite that, I do think the rate of flaws in Canon camera products is getting unpleasantly high lately.

    And I also have the impression that Canon tends to develop cameras lately which features that drift away from my personal needs and wishes more and more.
    The fixed LCD in the G series mentioned below is just one example of that.

  • Canon sex bad these days. Bif AF problem for the Canon 1D mark III, the Canon 1DS Mark III too, the 5D mark II black points (even it’s ok with the new firmware), the 40D Err99, now the G10, I mean, what the hell is going on there?? we are not talking about 100 dollars products, but hundreds and thousands, this is just amazing.. (Im not trolling, Nikon has problems too..)

  • He has a point. Nikon even had the black dot problem first…. just less of a big deal because it wasn’t released at christmas for the DPR forum goers to take longer exposures of christas lights at high ISO, and then whine about a black pixel they found @ 200%

  • It also only happened when shooting in the sRAW1 mode under certain lighting conditions. If you shot in RAW or JPEG for instance there were no problems, and it was fixed in a firmware update as all camera companies fix problems like that.

  • God forbid a car company come out with a recal noticed on a $45,000 product. I mean seriously, even Bentley $250,000 cars have had defects. Welcome to the world.

  • Wait a minute…

    The CCD sensor in the Canon G10 is MADE BY SONY, NOT Canon. So, if there’s a problem with the sensor, blame it on Sony. Remember previous Sony sensor and battery issues? Sony strikes again! :D

  • David,you again miss the point. Canon is having an increasing number of QC issues as of late. That’s bad. The relevant point is that the rate of occurrence of these issues is increasing, NOT HOW THEY COMPARE TO THOSE OF OTHER BRANDS. It’s comical because it is obvious that you are exclusively a Canon user, yet you are concerned with issues a couple of Nikon point-and-shoot cameras have. Who cares? Mass production will always lead to some flawed devices. These flaws are expected and marginally acceptable when they occur in lower-end, bargain-priced cameras. What bothers me is when flaws occur in high-end and professional products. The $500 G10 is NOT a bargain camera. The The 1D series are NOT bargain cameras. Yet there have been issues.

  • I didn’t miss your point. I just think it lacks reasonable perspective.

    We completely disagree that the Nikon D3, D90, D300, D40 etc. are point and shoot cameras, as they all had problems, all had firmware undates to fix problems, and if you search on google you will find tons of user complaints on Nikon DSLR’s in various photography forums from a google search. Perspective matters. No one comapny makes perfect products.

    I’ve switched pro SLR systems three times in my career, from Contaxt RTS, RTSII’s with Zeis lenses of which all 3 bodies broke on a shoot in Spain, to Nikon F3’s which I had a fleet of because they all broke so often, to EOS which have yet to break on me from EOS 1’s to my two 1Ds3’s including a couple of XXD bodies as well. Nikons are good cameras. I might buy them now if was starting fresh. But to single Canon out for problems the way you do is not a realistic or reasonable perspective. All camera companies have production problems and defects, always have, always will.

    Personally I think given the huge Canon product line and new cameras released each year the problems are relatively few, and they get fixed.

    Changing things like the LCD on the G series was probably because at the time bigger LCD’s were the rage and they probably thought they were meeting consumer demand. I think a slightly smaller but higher rez LCD like they can make today could justify bringing the swivel back, but we’ll see.
