Jeff Ascough teasing us

Jeff Ascough posted on his twitter that he's testing a new rangefinder.

Could it be Canon? Maybe a digital Bessa? Howabout a digital Ikon?

Its definitely not a Nikon or a Leica.

Thanks Joseph

  • Canon Digital Rangefinder R for the full-frame models, Digital Canonet A for the APS-C models.

  • Really looking forward to Canon’s entry into this product class. It will happen, the question is when. This market is growing and it would be silly for Canon or anyone else to ignore it.

  • Yay if it’s a digital! Just what I was wishing for in a previous post, a non-Leica digital rangefinder. Now it just needs to have a non-Leica price.

  • He is, and I have big doubts Canon would even let him mention it if it was them.

I’m thinking Zeiss or Voigtlander. Neither is a direct Canon competitor for camera bodies.

  • Wow!!!

Makes sense for Jeff to be testing a rangefinder, he shot Leica for years for his weddings. Not until the last few years did he switch to Canon digital.

    This is HUGE news.

I’ve been lusting over a digital rangefinder but wasn’t happy with the options. PLEASE let this be a REAL (no EVIL, that is not a rangefinder in the real definition and I don’t see Jeff using that description for an EVIL cam) digital rangefinder from somebody other then Leica!!!

  • There is no way for Zeiss because she has already emphasize that no digital Zeiss Ikon will be made ever as Leica has this place. There may be possible that Voigtlander makes one since she has made twice for Epson and she has the potential of making a mature digital body.

For else, I can’t think of any. The last two may be Hasselblad or Fuijfilm. We should not forget Fujifilm used to made XPan / TX1/TX2. Fujifilm may develop rangefinder in digital format.

I hope what Jeff mentioned is not confused of seeing EVIL as rangefinder. Otherwise, any brand may possible to announce it in photokina.

  • Canon wont launch a new rangefinder camera, the market is simply not big enough to support a new camera and new lenses. It could be a Canon EVIL model though, but that wont be a rangefinder.

If it really is a rangefinder and not just someone who don’t understand the definition then it’s probably Epson with an upgrade.

  • That’s right. Most people don’t know that digital cameras are actually analogue. Hence the A/D converter in all current digital cameras.

  • if It is a canon, I’m going to wait and see how it couples with the M-mount lenses. if C/V, Ziess or Leica glass won’t work, then I’ll pass.

  • Hmmm interesting, a true RF? or does it feel like one?
Epson is at the top of the list for a true RF.
An evil could be just about anybody,
If Canon use the EF mount it will limit the usefulness of the body, I think they will have to design a new lens series with shorter flange to sensor distance to be able to use more vintage lenses(like M4/3)

  • On the Leica forum someone wrote that Ascough had claimed this new “rangefinder” would be full frame and come with a 35/1.2 lens.

    I rather think he’s preparing an April fool’s joke…

  • I only picked 8, since 8 follows after 7, since it will be a new model. Had nothing to do with the dimensions of the sensor.

  • Why would Canon be interested in creating a camera system that had good compatibility with vintage lenses? Companies like Canon and Nikon make their money selling lenses. Whilst other mounts might be supported with the right adapter I’d be amazed if Canon or Nikon made that an important feature.

  • I would love a digital Voigtländer!!!!!! But yeah April the first is just around the corner.

  • Please excuse the ignorance but what is a digital rangefinder and how does it differ from the traditional DSLR?

  • Well duh!
Everything in the world is analogue, digital is just an arbitrary interpretation of an analogue quantity.

There, I joined your silly argument!

  • So is it rangefinder or EVIL?

What does digital rangefinder even mean? Is it what Leica does, or is just a mirrorless contrast-detect camera which happen to “look” like a rangefinder?

  • exactly: it will likely be a new mount, with new lenses. best way to justify that for the customer: EVIL or even better a glass view finder version of an evil = rangfinder style with autofocus.

  • Nikon are more analogue than Canon. 12analoguepixels is all I need.

The AF (analogue focus) on the 5DII is a joke.

The D700 is a analogue pro camera, the 5DII is for analogue amateurs.

  • You’re right, it’s most likely a Nikon. Because then the focus won’t be a joke and the 12MP it has will be all I need.

Oh and it will also be a pro camera, unlike one made by Canon which would be for amateurs.

  • its called the Epson RD-1. based off the BESSA R3 body, 1.6x crop. 6mp. its been out for years

  • It would be funny if this turned out to be the rumored Nikon surprise.

I still don’t see how a photographer of this stature could make such a statement to the public without the vendor actually wanting this to leak out as a form of viral marketing.

  • I also believe it will be a NIkon….and I hope its 12MP/FF or 8MP/APS-C, with those specs it will have mind blowingly clean images. And please dear god let it take M-mount lenses!

  • I was planning to buy Olympus EPL-2 or whatever it’s name. But I’m holding in a hope that Canon is going to release their own version. Howerver, I don’t think that it’s going to be be a Canon.

  • Well, now that I see some more talk over at DPR that it has autofocus, I”m gonna guess that it’s an EVF in the upper left acting like a rangefinder view, but it will still be TTL viewing and not needing parallax correction. Also read it was FF, so this should be something to compete against the Leica M9 and not a m4/3 unit.

  • That’s huge compared to the brains of canon users. Which doesn’t exist.

Still 12MP is more than enough for me.

and the 5DII AF is a joke.

  • His Bio states that he is international ambassador for Canon. Now while I agree that Canon would be too obvious here, I think it is 100% certain that it is NOT Nikon.

  • Of course it’s a Nikon. Unlike Canon Nikon are actually innovators not imitators.

Sure 12MP is all I need and the 5DII AF is a joke. But that’s not all that’s wrong with Canon. They also spell Cannon wrong ALL THE TIME!

  • So you can see it in your mouth. Of course I mean a sausage that is called by some a “wiener”.

Not that this guy using my name can spell properly, being a Canon user and all.

    12MP is all I need.

  • The only Nikon surprise would be if they made a Nikon that sucked (like a Canon, with joke AF like the 5DII and a Nikon that wasn’t a pro cam like the 7D).

  • Many people like Range Finders are good because 1) they are small and discreet and 2) they are quite in operations. 3) you can change the lenses.

EVIL cameras achieve all of these benefits. That’s why I believe that the best evolution of the range finder are the EVIL Cameras and not Digital Range Finders.

  • I don’t get it. What’s so great about rangefinders? I get the idea of Leica though. But that’s Leica. What is it so special about Canon rangefinder? Can somebody explain? At least those, who are so happy with it?

  • Go for it, I never go there anyway, I just like posting here about how the 5DII AF is a joke and 12MP is all I need.

  • I’d put money on this not being a Canon rangefinder.

Anyone want to make a wager?

I didn’t understand the hype of rangefinders until I actually used one.

  • Rangefinder refers to the way the manual focus assist works, basically combining the images from two finders.

If the actual sensor is film or digital makes no difference.

I am not aware of any AF that works on the rangefinder principle, so calling an AF camera “rangefinder” is misleading.

    So the real questions are:
    — Is this just a point-and-shoot camera with interchangeable lenses?
    — Does it have a traditional optical viewfinder or an electronic one (EVIL)?
    — Is the AF through the lens (contrast detection) or not (point and shoot-type)?

  • I haven’t. Can you explain? I just don’t get it. You can make a much better picture with SLR, can’t you?

  • your not a professional, if that’s 12mp u want go get it then! 5DII is a joke then don’t buy it. no buddy here is forcing you to get a 5DII. what’s with all the ignorance act?

  • Yep, you’re right. Let me have fun with my even more amature Canon EOS 40D. Thank you.

  • Do your own research.

It’s a fairly large topic and is something you should look into yourself instead of asking very vague questions on a rumors forum.

    Educate yourself!

  • The lens creates the image, the body captures that image.
The only reason SLRs have better IQ (for the last while)
is because the manufactures have put more R&D $ into them. The M9 is no P&S in terms of IQ.

  • Thanks, your skull is thick.

Mine is thin to make room for my massive brain.

Your Canon level insult sure failed there.

  • No buddy here is right. Why would I have a Canon user as a buddy?!

12MP is all I need, the 5DII AF is a joke!

Feed me! Not that I’m trolling, just stating facts.

  • I am not talking about IQ. Under much better picture I meant composition. Thank you anyway, J-Man, for your reply. How can you make a better composition with a rangefinder than with SLR? Or is it just a process of making a picture with a rangefinder?

  • John Swan likes this. Rangefinders are so last century. Leica owners are just equipment-collecting dilletantes with more money than real skill. They don’t actually use their cameras, they just like to show it behind a glass display case since the resale value would drop if it gets so much as a particle of dust or a microscopic scratch. It’s only ridiculously expensive because of the very low sales volume, not because the quality & IQ is even remotely worth it.

  • well wow, maybe you should look at some of the people who have shot with rangefinders work…larry burrows, robert capa, bresson…yea they never used their cameras in fear of scratching them

and current users, trente park, lebowitz and im sure if you go to magnum youl find scores more

    pathetic assumption of yours there.

and yes to give my bias im a leica user, happy owner of a battered camera and well travelled and 3000 rolls of film use by me, not to count the previous owner/s

  • What’s the date tomorrow?

    “AF” rangefinder …

    Luminance
    Optimized
    Optical
Framelines (read the first letters upwards)

  • The first three are dead since the last century, the current handful of pros don’t use that for their paid work, and the rest, like you, are posers. So, yes, most of the current owners are dilletantes and equipment collectors, just like what Ken Rockwell derisively said.
