Canon Service Life for Cameras & Lenses Update

Craig Blair
8 Min Read

Canon Japan has updated their camera and lens end of service dates. This is great information to have if you’re using current EF or EF-M gear. If you’re buying older gear on the used market, it’s good to know when Canon will officially stop servicing cameras and lenses.

There will likely be third-party repair shops that will be able to do the work after Canon’s service ends.

Canon EOS R Gear

There are no RF lenses with end of service dates yet, but there are a few EOS R cameras that now have end of service life dates.

The original Canon EOS R camera body will be serviceable until 2029 and the EOS R6 until 2030. So, these popular cameras will serve you well and give you peace of mind for a long while yet.

If you don’t see models of cameras on the list, that means the service life has already ended.

  1. The EF70-200 2.8L USM to live longer than the IS I and IS II is non expected!
Quite the contrary, the original 70-200 was available brand new for much longer than the IS and IS II. If I remember correctly, it wasn’t discontinued until the RF lens was released. That lens was kept as a budget option.

It's a couple of years that I'm looking for an used IS II to swap my now ancient non-IS 70-200 2.8 L (still haven't found the right price for me, around 600€; actual price is always 750/800€ min), but seeing that the IS II is going to be unsupported next month, compared to next year for the non-IS I'm currently owning, really makes me think twice.

Probably going to wait for an equivalent Sigma Art occasion, or even more probably save money and invest in the (supposedly) coming RF 70-something f2.8 non-L to pair with my RF 28-70 f2.8 STM which I'm super satisfied with.

If you lived so far well with the non-IS version (that is out of service since many years) you would discover that the Mk II version is much sharper. I have it, and of course reading that it is going out of service soon is a sort of blow, but mine never needed any service so far. I have an EF 500mm F/4.5 L USM lens that was produced in 1995, and that 30 years old lens still is in working condition. If you treat such an L lens well, it lives much longer than its official service period, as your old 70-200 certainly proves.

You could count on dropping prices for the Mk II zoom. I'd always prefer such an original Canon lens over a 3rd party lens, because it's AF works much more reliable, and the longer a lens is, the bigger is the advantage of a native lens. I have a Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 G1 standard zoom because I wanted to have IS back then when it came out, but its AF performance isn't reliable. I even found myself quite frequently switching to manual focus when I use it. I will certainly replace that lens soon by a used Canon version, I'd even accept non-IS now (I am used to non-IS lenses, shooting vintage gear).
  4. For my lens catalogue:
Ef 50mm f1.8 (metal mount) - well out side of any schedule!
Ef 135mm f 2.0 L, Ef 70-200mm f2.8 LIS II and Ef 400mm f2.8 LIS II all need to get to a service centre in the next few months, before they all become untouchable by Canon service centres.
  5. I see that the 600 f/4 mk2 has an EOL in Jul '25 while the 500 f/4 mk2 has an EOL date of Feb '29 .. why I wonder, since the two lenses were likely released around the same time.
I have a refurb copy of the 600 that I bought a few years ago and I haven't used it enough to justify an upgrade .. sucks that there is a risk of it being a (giant) paperweight if something goes wrong with it :(
I pay for CPS, I don't know if that helps in any way

Because there was a 600/4 III but not a 500/4 III, so the 500/4 II was ‘current’ for longer.

then does it make sense to 'upgrade' to the 600 mk3 or even the rf 600 mk1. the upgrade cost will not be cheap, or I could just use it outside the EOL period and the day the mk2 stops working I can look for a 3rd party repair shop - and I don't know who they are.

Personally, I’m going to just keep using my 600/4 II until it stops working. Hopefully by then, Canon has launched a new 600/4 with a built-in 1.4x.

thanks for that feedback. i feel that way too -- and I will try to make more photos w/ the lens so I'll feel I have extracted some good use from that lens ;)
  10. My own primary concerns here are the CMOS batteries that reside inside cameras that I still use (but that Canon no longer manufactures)...

Why? The camera should operate with the juice from the battery even if it does not record date/time from the diminutive CMOS, right?
  11. Glad that I sent my EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II in to CPS for maintenance/cleaning just a week or two ago. It is my only EF hold-out. Guess I've got a reason now to finally grab that 70-200 Z lens...
