I received an email from someone claiming they were involved in the
testing of this lens.

Features:
– Push/Pull design gone
– Lens is faster at f/4
– New coating ala the 24L
– 4 stop IS
– Weather sealed
– “Sharpest zoom I've ever used.”
– Announcement Feb. 2009

This has been a constant rumor for the last two years. We'll see what
happens.

  • man… I wish they made it a 200-500/5.6 IS… they really need something lighter and more affordable on the long end

  • Interesting rumor. If the 100-400 was sharper and got rid of the push-pull I would maybe consider it, but I’m pretty sold on the 300 f/4L IS.

  • if you step down the 100-400 to 6.3 is is very sharp, I’ve had no problems with this lens. I even got used to the push pull!!! I wonder what this new one will be like

  • I wonder how soon it transitions to 5.6. I remember it was almost right from the start with the current 100-400. How they price it will also be interesting to see.

  • I have no problems with the push/pull design, I actually like it and even prefer it. However, either design doesn’t stop me from buying… I am just waiting for an update to the lens.

Anyway, I would buy a straight f4 in an instant if it did come out, but any update to this lens is what I need to push me over into buy mode…

  • The push / pull design was a nightmare if you shot in dusty situations like sand & airborne dust , it does suck in dust particles – but this is only in extreme situations and I didn’t really encounter any issues with it in normal shooting conditions. The twist L series zooms can be fully weather sealed.

I will be happy to see the push/pull go though – it wasn’t very intuitive if you’re a Canon user with 6 other twist zooms!

I am very happy if the f4 bit is true – I always found this lens to be way too slow at the long end – yet not very sharp wide open, so this will definitely be greatly received…although for a 400mm f4, the front element will have to be much bigger which will cost a bomb! At least I can use the old ones on my other lenses.

    Great news…finger’s crossed.

  • I would have thought the 400 5.6 would be due an upgrade more than the 100-400, as it still doesn’t have IS or weather sealing. On that subject, the 300 f4 also isn’t weather sealed (although at least it has IS, which the Nikon equivalent doesn’t have).

I have never really liked the design of the 100-400, I prefer using the 70-200 2.8 zoom with a 1.4 converter (even though it’s shorter). I also think the 100-400 looks a bit strange when extended:

Someone mentioned a constant f4 aperture. That would be nice, however I wonder what size/price it would be? If you look at the Nikon 200-400 f4, it’s pretty big and heavy and is in a totally different price range to the current 100-400.

It’s a shame the 400 f4 DO is so expensive!

  • As someone already said, delete this “Sent from my iPhone”.

Otherwise interesting rumor. I hope it will be released soon.

  • id prefer a 200-400 5,6 since i need something longer than my 70-200is4

im sure it would be much easier to build since its just a 2x zoom

  • There is an interesting comparison on LL (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/lenses/forgotten-400.shtml) and the 400 5.6 is a real winner (on ad 1Ds, mark I!!!).

I’ve tested some samples, and their IQ (on my 5D) is far from the 400, but the stabilizer is very effective.

The rumor claims “Sharpest zoom I’ve ever used”: if true, it could be closer to the prime, and with a good stabilizer.

    Anyway: what about the price?

  • I really dislike the push pull and the poor weather seal so the new one sounds good to me. However, one very important feature to look for is if the autofocus will work with the extender? For me it’s a must in order to move away from my 300 f/4…

  • @Greg:

Oh yes, I should have known it was too good to be true!

I just hope Canon hurry up and build my ideal lens’s to compliment my already fantastic 70-200 2.8L IS –

    a 16-70mm F2 L IS

    and a 200-400 F4 L IS

Both no more than £1,500 please :)

    Thank you.

  • Very nice. I was about to get the current 100-400 but will hold for a while.

Now to the CR guy: Why the CR2 score on this one? Unreliable source? How can we help you to make this a CR3 or CR4?

    Thank you.

  • If your annoucement about a 500/5.6L IS is true, O buy it as soon as it is available…

  • Indeed, i think something like a 200-400 F4 or F5.6 should be considered by Canon first before update the 100-400. Since that the current 100-400 is not bad at all, and Canon’s lack of a lens to compete with Nikon’s excellent 200-400. And half of the 100-400 is a waste of money if you have any of those 70-200s… At least I would like to see a 200-400/4L IS to be introduced not the updated version of 100-400.

  • If this becomes true I will buy it – provided it is significantly sharper than the current 100-400.

  • I really don’t like the current 100-400 design. I’ve heard some people complaining about dust in the lens because of the push/pull system. But a new 100-400 would raelly complete my gear (longest is 70-200 2.8 IS).

Well, let’s hope it’s true this time, just a few weeks waiting for the announcement…

  • Not sure if it is really feasible to do a 100-400 zoom with a turn mechanism, would mean that you would have to do a lot of turning to reach the 400 end. Would never be as fast as the push/pull mechanism, imho.

    /Zeb

  • I’m really hoping this is a production item. I am looking at the 500 f/4, but would love an awesome twist zoom to fill the gap between it and my 70-200 2.8 IS – I have used various 100-400L ‘dust pumps’ and I am not 100% happy with it.

  • @ Mattia,

The Dutch Canon website has a typo for the 100-400. If you look at the partnumber it’s just a normal 100-400.
