The Good News
I have received a fair number of emails from various places around the globe about an upgrade to the 24-70 f/2.8L.
Two known sources say the lens is for sure in development.
The biggest word of such a lens come from Denmark. According to an email, someone at Canon DK let slip that the lens wouldn’t be in stock anymore due to an upgrade. The same sort of information was apparently passed onto a CPS member in Germany as well.
The Grain of Salt
It’s rare (but does happen) that a Canon Rep would ever know of a coming product announcement. Let alone spill the beans about it.
Another report said there’s issues in production with the new 24-70, and that’s why it has yet to see the light of day. The issue is in the new coating(s) for the lens elements.
I don’t post everything I get about the 24-70 IS, just because I have heard about an upgrade for years now. There has been a lot of tidbits coming in recently however.

Today : – $710 on Amazon ($1190 versus $1900)
This could be quite something. It would be interesting to see how it performs compared to the current version.
oh please be true
OLD NEWS!
Until you get a CR3 about it i don’t want to here about it!!!
@ JCC –
Thats no sign! that the regular price!!!
look also at B&H…
Goodbye my old and trusty EF 24-105/4 IS, it was really nice knowing you, we had some great times together but it’s time to move on.
Anything in the rumor mills about a replacement for the 50 1.4? Unlike most other lenses that had been low in or out of stock for months now the 50 1.4 is still hard to come buy.
Due to the weaknesses of the current EF 50 1.4, I am so close on pulling the trigger on a Sigma 50 1.4 despite its purported flaws, but I would wait if Canon brought something new in the next six months or so.
Darn… just received my 24-105mm f/4 L IS yesterday.
It appears that the main benefit of a Glodal Financial Downturn or Recession in many countries is that even the biggest, clumsiest and most complacent corporations are once again asking about what their customers want and responding to that.
Almost every review, whether professional or opinion based since IS evolved mention that IS would be a great feature to add to that lens. It IS about time.
I recently bought the 24-105mm f/4 L IS. It was a tough decision between that and the 24-70mm non-IS but it was the IS that helped me finally decide.
I realise that this is CR1 but to anyone at Canon that reads these posts: This is what your customers are looking for!
At this recession time, don’t think Canon will release this IS version lens. Without IS it’s already heavy, not to mention the price. So I’d say it’s BS for now.
Do if its two known sources why is it CR1? not CR2?
typo: “So if..”
Amen~~
IS adds a trivial amount of weight in other lenses. No reason to think differently for 24-70.
Enjoy it. It is a fantastic lens.
I was in the same boat for choosing 24-105 and 24-70. I of course did the same went for IS. A year later sold 24-105 and bought 24-70 because of f/2.8. When I photograph kids in low light condition, f/4 is useless, IS can help your shaking hands but not frozen the action. If new 24-70 comes with IS, that would be awesome, but it breaks my bank account.
I’m on your side.
Adds 250g to the 70-200 f2.8. Whilst other lenses it might be less, that’s a good example as the 70-200 2.8 was built without IS in mind.
well the price you will be paying if a 24-70 f/2.8 L IS will still be much more expensive then a 24-105mm f/4 L IS, so it’s not a total lost :D
pics off those sigma 50’s look real nice.
I WONT BUY IT UNLESS IT HAS A DIRECT PRINT BUTTON!
omg caps!
add IS is a great idea, but I don’t think canon can make it.
You can expect a $500 price increase for the IS, just like on the 70-200 2.8 – not worth it for a wide to standard zoom in my opinion.
i have been waiting for this forever.
praise the lord! hopefully it gets here before the christmas rebates!
I was so close to buying the 24-105mm, but I think I’ll wait for this lens. Between the rumored 60D and the 24-70/2.8 IS my wallet is going to be substantially lighter this year.
Can’t believe there are so many “movers and shakers” out there to make IS on a 24mm lens viable. As some poster said, it stops your movement, but not the movement of your subject.
The main point would be f/2.8, which already exists without IS.
Robert’s imaging have them in stock for $325. I got mine a few weeks ago without any problems.
Woot, looks like everybody will be moving toward all 2.8 lens. My arsenal will comprise of 11-16 2.8, 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 + 50 1.4. Once you go 2.8 you can’t go back. I’m surprised Canon’s willing to also kill the market of their 24-105. This might be great for us, but in terms of marking and providing lines of products, what will become of the 24-105. However, I would consider the 24-105 if the price drops to around 600-700. Otherwise, 24-1[3]5 II?
Actually, there are times when I would’ve liked a little more reach with the 24-70. I imagine there’s a lot of people that would be willing to sacrifice f2.8 for a lighter longer lens.
Let’s quit the “in this economy” stuff. People are still spending money as fast as water is flowing over Niagra Falls. We all know that many will finance this by using their credit cards(absolutely ridiculous) and then still blame someone else for their own stupidity. Save up and pay CASH, if you didn’t have all the debt of the cards, $2000 isn’t that difficult to come up with…Oh yeah, mine won’t end up on Craigslist or Ebay because I have a house payment coming up…Bring it on Canon, I have a couple of solid bills to send your way.
“According to an email, someone at Canon DK let slip that the lens wouldn’t be in stock anymore due to an upgrade.”
Why would Canon replace the 24-70 2.8 with the 24-70 2.8 IS? Wouldn’t they just offer both lenses with different price points, like the 70-200?
Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 is stock many places…. Doesn’t look like its coming at least this year..
I recently got mine with UX05 date code i.e. May 2009 manufactured so looks like production is still on on this lens.
I think the idea is that since this is a zoom that goes out to 70mm, the IS is worth it. Yes, 24mm is a bit wide to make IS really useful, but at 70mm it can come in handy. You can shoot at 1/50 or 1/30th and not worry about camera shake. Ask anyone that has an EF-S 17-55.
Also, since the current 24-70 isn’t quite as good as Nikons optically, this new version will probably fix that. They’ve got to keep up with the Joneses, or one-up them.
Maybe that’s why it’s only a CR1.
Although that 24-70mmIS is for sure comming (call it guts feeling), All the information are bunch of lies. why ? knowing canon they won’t drop a lens unless there was a direct replacment and 24-70mmis is not a direct replacment for 24-70mm. it will be more like the 200-700mm and the 200-700mmis. the direct replacment for the 24-70mm would be a 24-70mm II with better optic but no IS
Several danish dealers are now advertising the 5D2 with the 24-70 2.8 L. Not a kit, but you get a small reduction in price, if you buy both:
http://www.edbpriser.dk/Products/Listprices.asp?ID=511229&searchArea=products&Soegeord=canon+5d+mark
? 200-700mm?
i just wish the weight is not a killer.
If its actually coming, I hope they have worked to lower the weight. It is already too heavy, and worse yet, it is front heavy and very difficult to hold it still on a rebel or xxD camera. On a 1D series it balances much better, but still needs a diet.
The information is a rumor, why do you call it a lie?? No one said it was true.
I have and use the 17-55mm IS, and get sharp images every time, even at slow shutter speeds on my 40D. It is a great lens.
I’ve had 5 of the 24-70mm lenses, one I bought new, and 4 were acquired when I bought them as part of a lot of cameras and lenses. I used them on 5D and 40D cameras but unless they were on a tripod, or fast shutter it was frustrating. There was nothing wrong with the lenses, I could get sharp images on a tripod or by using high shutter speeds, but I returned the new one, and sold the other 4.
At this point, I am using the 24-105mm on my 5D2 and 1D MK II, and I’d need to see somethinng a lot better than the existing 24-70 lenses to convince me to buy one at a expected $1500 price.
Yay! Except I just bought the current 24-70, and dented it, so it will probably be a while before I can get one of these.
Just got my 5dMKII today…
What a fantastic camera…And the 24-105 included in the kit looks fast and sharp…But it is not f2.8 so this 24/70 2.8is would be the perfect lens on my mkII…
24-70 f2.8 and last generation light IS system : Rocks and Rulezzz :-)
I love my 24-70 with my 5DmkII as it is. adding IS would probably permanently fuse the lens to my camera.
before christmas would be perfect, but please canon, dont rush… make it right the first time. :D
Uhh…the name of this website is Canon Rumors.
Whenever, the 24-70, even it’s 2.8 has never attract my eye. 24 is too long, I love wider (17-40 or 16-35 2.8 II) and 70 is really not enough long…
I prefer to get a “cheap” 17-40 USM, a 50mm 1.8 II(I don’t use it a lot) and a 70-200 f/4 IS USM
I NEED THIS LENS PLEASE!!!
CEO CANON PLEASE GIVE ME THIS STRATEGY PLAN GREEN LIGHT PLEASE!
I WAIT TWO YEARS FOR THIS LENS.
EOS-1DS MARK III
5D MARK II
16-35 f/2.8 L USM II
24-105 f/4 L IS
70-200 f/2.8 L IS
28-300 f/3.5-5.6 L USM IS
Out of curiosity and in the interest of debate I was wondering if a 35-70mm f/2.8 L IS replacement of the same quality would suit users better?
Would it make it a lighter, more portable walkaround lens? Would the range suit event and wedding photographers and and journalists that need the ability to quickly zoom between group and portrait shots?
What do you think?
This has got to be the most talked about Canon zoom ever.
I suppose Canon is waiting for Nikon to release one and then they will let it out.
Come on Canon, give it to us already.
Why should Canon wait for Nikon? Nikon will never have such a good lens.
That lens would be a complete blockbuster if the price isnt more than 300 over the regular one
uhh, considering that Nikon updated from 28-70 to 24-70 last year I doubt that very much.
I don’t think so because It’s so narrow in scale, and not every (actually less than half by my experience) of L-zoom shooters have a 16-35. Also 35-70 is exceedingly limited in range. It would make it lighter, but I don’t think that weight is top priority for most L-zoom purchasers. lightweight would be a plus, but in all honesty, once its on a 1-series body I’d rather have it heavier to have it balance better. Keep in mind that this is a standard zoom, covering from wide-angle to telephoto. also 35mm isn’t very wide, and on a 1.3x body it is a normal, not a wide, not great for perspective or groups. It is not intended to be a walk around lens, at least not as I understand the term. the ‘walk around’ lens in the L-series is the 28-300
In one of the larger electronics outlets in my city they had both the Sigma and the Canon 50 1.4 in stock . I brought my own camera with me and tested both of them. The Sigma was horribly soft at anything below 2.8, and the AF was noticeable slower and very inconsistent. The softness might be the reason why the shop discounted the Sigma (they only had one sample in stock), perhaps it was returned a few times too much. But the AF issues are pretty much what people in the forums complain about. So no Siggy for me. :-(
I guess I will have to wait what Canon delivers, until then I will practice with my EF-S 17-55 2.8… which I think needs calibration, BTW.
I’m looking forward to the IS feature on but my 1:1 & 1:1.6, for the long end of the lens being 70mm or 112mm. There is a big market to use this in the 1.6 bodies as well so the range it covers there is most useful. And if IS isn’t useful at the wide end, then why the 17-55 IS?
if you need to calibrate there’s a good test chart here: http://regex.info/blog/photo-tech/focus-chart
saved my 24-70 from being a beer bottle (its a +15)
sorry bye mistake, late night stuff…
70-200mm and 70-200mm is
sorry, yes I should of not caled it a lie. lets call it a bad rumor.
yeah, it is only a replay to a rumor. sorry for been rude about it.
Because Canon seems to hold off on any new tech until Nikon releases it and then Canon releases it straight after. e.g. video, high res monitors, updated 14mm etc.
IS? so canon really don t like good picture. A D body 1.3 cropped and a wide angle lens with IS? it s all canon can do for lost many photographer. all great photographer now use ds series (sport and nature photographer too!!), and a lot of them use 24 70…. ds series is FF and 24 70 is NO IS. BUT ff sensor is better than smaller one and no IS lens is better than stabilized one (of course IS is perfect on telephoto, but please no on wide angle/normal lens).
Wow! How did you recalibrate it Zac?
It does!
Totally agree. Though a bit more on the tele side, like a 24-100 2.8 L IS, would be very nice, and would justify the extra heft and price of the IS. Adding IS to the 24-70 just doesn’t excite me at all.
Yeah, like how Nikon released 1080p and full manual video controls way before Canon did too! Oh wait, Nikon doesn’t have that yet…
first I could tell it was front focusing, so I knew that my adjustments would all be in the + direction. so I shot on tripod with the setup shown on that webpage (flash aimed at ceiling for light at X-sync and ISO 100 to prevent motion blur/noise confusion of sharpness of focus. all shot at f/2.8. I went into the custom functions menu to the Autofocus/drive page, and changed calibration by lens to +5, and took a test shot, then again at 10, 15, and 20. I could tell that 15 was dead on, but I tested 14 and 16 to make sure and I could clearly see on the test chart where the plane of focus had shifted in front of and behind the intended target, meaning that +15 was the correct value.
Not to say that the 24-70 f/2.8 is 50% heavier than the 24-105 f/4 !
People that go hiking generaly have the f/4 familly (17-40, 24-105, 70-200) because they are really good opticaly and a lot lighter.
well i don’t need it to be IS but definitely please update it.
sony CZ, nikon and even sigma 24-70 f2.8 variants deliver so much better quality compared to canon’s current offering.
tbh, it is disappointing that it is taking canon so long to deliver a lens in the same class as the other manufacturers.
Hah, a 24-105L f/2.8 IS would be a dream, but it’d probably be bigger than the 70-200 f/2.8 IS! :)
Has anyone heard of a 24-105 f2.8 IS USM rumor ?!
Absolutely correct, I love the 2.8. But when I’m walking around shooting, the 24-105 is my daily lens on the 5Dii.
the dream!
The 24-70 is already huge, so for the extra reach and less times I have to switch to the 70-200 I’d take a bigger lens, no problem – bigger & heavier & more $$$ just for IS on a 24-70? PASS
I am waiting for the new 24-70 too. 24-70L is too old. Nikon and Sony have released their 24-70 lens last year. Canon has to do something.
That’s good info. Thanks Zac.
I’d carry less water before I’d leave my 24-70 behind on a hike ;) but I dont do hard core hiking, mostly day hikes from a camp ground. If I was a hard core hiker/camper/nature shooter I’d be buying a K-7 with the 16-50 2.8 and 60-250 4.0 for a compact weather sealed system with built in HDR, 720p HD, 5.2 fps drive, and solid 15 MP stills.
+1
That would be the ultimate standard zoom lens
I hear Canon is having a photo contest…so they’re doing something ;)
That would be relly cool and fit to the 70-200 f4/2.8
Amazon is out of stock on a lot of lenses right now (some of the 3rd party vendors have them, but not amazon).. I don’t know, Canon rebates, out of stock… maybe we are getting an upgraded 24-70. This lens would be a monster upgrade over my xsi kit 18-55 which is always missing the 15mm when I need it.
not so sure, maybe a 28-70 f/2.8 IS though
might be a bit less expensive, a bit lighter and have a bit higher image quality
Almost perfect weapon.
Canon EF 10-400mm f1.4 L USM Fish Eye, 77mm diameter, 12 diaphragm blade. Only 2500 US$.
This is every photographer`s dream. Real super weapon.
When it released? only God knows.:)
EF-S 16-105. I would rather it was 18-105. 16mm a bit to wide for a zoom barrel distortion will be huge.
Canon is really up to something,
if im not mistaken, this is the first time Canon extended their rebate program for another month,… like they really wanted to get those old stuff out.
Also, the news about out-of-stock items… Canon production line isnt just doing nothing there in Japan, they’re doing a lot of things but just cant say what.
Also, the rumors of lots of new stuff for FALL.
piece these all together and there’s definitely some big news coming pretty soon. I would hold on to my wallet right now and WAIT!!!.
