Amazon says so

35L Discontinuation?
35L Discontinuation?

If you check the following link, you’ll see the 35L  as being “discontinued by manufacturer”.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00009R6WY?ie…….

The worst kept secret in the world of Canon lenses is that the 35L would see a replacement.

Thanks Sean

  • Awesome, hope something worth while is put in the replacement… maybe a new coating or something along that line.

    Should be interesting to see.

  • I heard that in the next version they are going to include the other .6 pounds.

Look at the item weight vs the shipping weight.

It is not as funny if I have to explain it.

  • I’m guessing it will be the same upgrade that the 24 1.4 got. Although 1.2 would be pretty awesome…

  • Aren’t these the same guys that had he 70-200 2.8 IS as “discontinued” and then “not discontinued”?

Maybe they checked twice with Canon.

  • lol

you could take pictures on the dark side of the moon with that, not in the same way fake chuck claimed nasa did in his recent post, but in the more hardocre way

  • I’ll bet they’ll add the “sub-wavelength” coating from the 24/1.4 II and the new TS-E lenses, it would be silly not to.

  • This makes sense Canon is almost done redoing their entire L series wide-angle line-up into series II.

    16-35 II in feb 07
    14 II in aug 07
    24 II in sep 08
    TS-E 24 in mar 09

only leaves the 35/1.4 and the 17-40. the 17-40 was the most recently introduced before Canon started updating to series II, so I don’t know that it will be made series II at the same time as the rest of the line-up.

  • did you know they left 12 modified Hasselblad 500EL cameras with Zeis lenses on the Moon and only brought the film magazines back? I’m thinking they could go back with digital backs and keep using them ;)

  • It looks like a typo. Canon does not give out this information before announcing the replacement, ever!

They have 2 in stock and more on the way, and most other major sellers have them in stock as well.

  • Thanks for posting my tip! I’m sure it’s a typo but nothing wrong with hoping! It could have merit as this is the one of the only popular primes that they do have in stock. The 50mm 1.2L and 85mm 1.2L have been out of stock for a long time. I suspect the 50mm 1.2L won’t be back in stock for a long time and the 85mm 1.2L may come back into stock before the rebate is over since that price hasn’t changed. The 50mm went back up to street price before the rebate. I was able to get my 85mm 1.2L for $1707.58 as I caught it a few days before it went back up to its current price. Best regards from Hawaii!

  • Out of topic, but somewhat related: what do you think about 100mm 2.8 macro being out of stock in most places ?

possible reason: replacement? or just an out-of-stock month?

    Thanks !

  • 16-35 II in feb 07
    14 II in aug 07

True, but they don’t have the new “sub-wavelength” coating yet… do I see a Mark III in their some-what near future(2-4 years)

I agree f 1.2 would be pretty awesome

  • I just purchased a 50mm 1.2L from amazon a few weeks ago and the date code is UX0609. Looks like they’re still making them.

  • Wait, that’s not absurd at all! There is no rain or wind on the Moon, the Hasselblads may just EX+.

  • Well the Descent Stage of the Lunar Modules were left on the moon, and I suspect the cameras might be in the equipment bay of the Descent Modules, which were recently photographed by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter

  • Nano coat the glass, add “II” to the printing on the body and maybe some fancy metal stuff inside. ;-)

  • Now it is clear to me why the European and Chinese guys want to start a mission back to the Moon… To recover the missing Hasselblads… :)

fingers crossed… something will definitely come this fall!

  • There won’t be a Mark II until the EF-S 30mm f/1.4 IS USM appears with the 60D. CR3 info.

  • Uh, how about we let the site be the decider of that? Oh, and “yeah right” on that lens…

  • Rumors about a EF-S 30mm f1.x or 2.0 are not new. Personnally, I don’t think that they’ll bring an EF-S with 1.4…I rather expect an EF-S 1.8 and a EF 1.2 or 1.4L..probably the EF with IS, to keep a bit of distance

  • Discontinued doesn’t mean that the distribution pipeline’s cleared; retailers may be able to get more for some time.

  • My guess is just out-of-stock month. Canon’s announcement of the new hybrid IS coming to a lens soon hints strongly at a new macro, but most likely it’ll be an L which wouldn’t be a replacement for the 100 2.8.

  • Then it’ll suffer focus shift due to extreme large aperture. And people will start b***hing again. No, thanks.

  • perfect, since I JUST bought a 35L…(rolls eyes). I could see updates on the way.

But also in terms of all the “out of stocks” I talked to my local Adorama and they said Canon scaled back production of all their lenses because of the economy. Shipments for them have been unpredictable; they order 5DIIs, lenses etc…and they get partial fills or late shipments. Take it for whats its worth..anyone else heard similiar?

  • if it would be indeed F1.2 (who gave birth to that rumor anyway) the price would be unreasonable high, lets say 2000$

35mm 1.4 II would be perfectly fine with today high iso performance!

  • I brought it up. But I didn’t say it was a rumor. I just said I hoped it would be 1.2 so we’d have a 1.2 in 35, 50 and 85.

  • allright, still so many people start talking about as if it was a rumor.

i really doubt this F1.2 will become true, the lens would be huge and very very expensive!

  • The 50 & 85 1.2’s are huge, but then so is the 24-70 2.8, I’m sure it would be similar in size to the existing 1.2’s, and priced in line with them as well. Like having 4 TS-E lenses, a full line up of 1.2 L’s could help keep Canon’s lens line on top of the rest.

  • FYI it said discontinued on amazon at least as far back as April 2008, that’s when I was looking to buy one. At that time their website said the 24L was discontinued too, but that was months before it actually got discontinued. I finally purchased the 35L in August 08, and since it had a current date code, I figured it was just amazon.com’s error. I wouldn’t base my beliefs off of what amazon says.
