Awesome! I’m reading it right now!
I’m doing a review of the manual at my blog http://dslrfilm.com
My biggest qualm is still that when you use the HDMI out, you can’t see live video on the LCD. Does anyone know a workaround? I’d like to have both at the same time.
We got the manual but NO camera.
LOL
aww man…
pg. 191 –
Movies cannot be printed.
well, that’s it then I’m going to stick to my disposables
ROLFMAO
Beacuse there’s no Direct Print button for movies I’m going to the dark side.
Wow, you must be the millionth person to make a direct print joke. Congratulations.
My favorite part is the warning that during continuous high-speed shooting the camera may become hot and cause hand burns. I guess 8fps speed does not come without consequences…
Thank you. You’re too kind.
my favorite part is pg. 92
“…doesnt support some third party lens”
Yeah that sucks. Same problem on the 5D2. There’s no workaround I’ve found. Maybe Magic Lantern will get it going one day.
Still only 3 exposure AEB. I was hoping for 5 or 7.
Yes, I downloaded it earlier today when I found it while browsing the Canon site. I figured I might as well get ready to use my camera when it comes. Too bad DPP isn’t published yet, just the manual.
Are you looking at a Nikon Manual? I don’t see that on page 92 of my instruction manual, and a searth of the manual did not turn it up either.
Sorry, this was attached to the wrong entry.
As to the desire for dual video out, I think there is only one internal video decoder which either provides HD for the HDMI output or VGA for the screen. There would need to be two decoders to provide both at the same time.
Wow, you must be the millionth person to criticize a direct print joke. Congratulations.
The M-Fn button seems pretty lame. All it does is set focus zones and FE-lock?
Wow, you must be the millionth person to criticize a criticism of a direct print joke. Congratulations.
It can do VF electronic level as well. Pg 218
I wonder when Canon is going to get around to publishing photos taken with the 7D. I still haven’t seen anything from Canon. Most of they’re cameras contain sample images on the site. Please clue me in if I’m missing the obvious link or two.
*their (not they’re) — D’OH!
Here’s some sample images and a video too: http://cweb.canon.jp/camera/eosd/7d/sample/sample-images/
As long as Canon puts Direct print on DSLRs you all are going to have to live with Direct print.
Thanks a bunch! Several of the images are impressive. I’m on the fence with making this my first DSLR, but still leaning towards the 5DMk2. I’m waiting to see what Nikon releases in the next month or so in the form of a D700x/s. Wasn’t impressed with the D300s or 50d. I will primarily be taking landscape/portrait photos, and do not care a bit for video. Pixel count is somewhat important for those ultra-wide shots to minimize photo stitching. BTW: Used to do a lot with film back in the late 80s early 90s — not new to SLRs. Have also owned several P&S cameras since 2001. Some have been OK, but nothing compared to what I used to get with my old Pentax and Olympus cameras. My budget is in the low $2K range for the body. I’m planning on this camera lasting me at least 4-5 years, and don’t want to throw away investment in lenses during this time frame and the next camera. I’ve been waiting since December 2008 to make a purchase, and will continue until the right camera comes along. If the 7D would have been full frame, I would have pulled the trigger — but even though the photos are impressive, I’ve seen AWESOME from the 5DMk2 and D700. Thanks again for the link — Canon USA needs to get their act together.
Sure they can — given enough paper — one sheet per frame. You could even 3-hole punch them into a gargantuan binder and flip the pages to view them in an animated fashion. Sound would be an issue though!
Yes, I teeter on absurd possibilities…
Page 13, sure enough it is there. You might get burned with this camera! I wonder if it will go up with Sony laptops and exploding Ipods? I have tried to burn out my IIn, but somehow it keeps cool at 8fps, I guess it must be the lower data flow that keeps me safe.
That’s because they’re still working on the camera
I do think that Canon needs to take a page from Nikon in creating microsites for their cameras.
Take a look at Nikon’s microsites for the D300s, or the D700, for example…they’re great…plenty of sample pics, testimonials from pro photogs, etc. The presentation is nice, and overall the microsites make a great pitch for the equipment.
Canon’s not bad, but could be better.
Why do you need second decoder? You take 1920×1024 picture that is sent to the HDMI, you run simple ‘down sample’ algorithm for picture to be 640×480 (as back screen) and you got it. This operation requires only 2milion processor operations while todays processors run 2-3 bilions oprations per second. They already do that – while movie is recorded, it’s encoded for x264 codec (very expensite in terms of processor power, way more then decoded) and showing you same picture on the LCD.
BTW, 7D even have 2 DIGIC 4 processors, while 5DII have only one processor.
Canon wants you buy 1D series to get AEB more than 3.
+1 (and a significant 1 at that)
I have finished reading the manual from front to back and have completed my analysis. I am ready to purchase and mount a L lens immediately. This is going to be something special.
Go back to Nikon rumours, your type is not welcome here.
I just finished licking your mother from front to back and have completed my analysis. I am ready to purchase and mount her immediately. This is going to be something special.
I have just finished obtaining your IP address and have completed my analysis. This is going to be something special.
NOT!!!
On p91 the manual says:
“Lens’ Maximum Aperture and AF Sensitivity
With lenses whose maximum aperture is larger than f/5.6.
With all AF points, cross-type AF sensitive to both vertical and horizontal lines is possible.”
This must be wrong (I hope it is). They must mean f/5.6 and larger. The new kit lenses wouldn’t even have ‘all AF points cross-type AF sensitive to both vertical and horizontal lines’ because the kits are f/5.6 lenses at full zoom.
No problem! This will probably be my first DSLR and I think it will make for a pretty amazing camera. I do wish it was full frame, but I don’t think I’ll be too disappointed with it. I hope to see more pictures soon and I have to agree. I was shocked that there wasn’t any sample pictures on Canon USA.
I don’t see the reason to get testy.
I love Canon equipment, but just offering some constructive criticism. Geesh…I never knew it was somehow forbidden to criticize the brand.
Prediction: the 7D will be a very loved camera by consumers, and Canon will sell in very large numbers.
If it was full frame it would be a lot more expensive.
And I agree…Canon USA needs to do a better job with their website and really do their dslr’s justice.
John swan was just dissin’ on you because you dropped the n-bomb (nikoff) in a CanON (Yayeh!! CANON!!!) website, silly! OH DANG LOOK! IT’s a bunch of fellow Kanonites!!!
*cyber knuckle bump to y’all*!!!!!!!!!!!!1111!!!one!!!!111!!!eleven!!!!1!!
What brand of camera you use is a religion now don’t you know, criticism is not tolerated, especially if it’s constructive…
What are you planning to do with his IP address, tell the FBI?
7d is a lousy camera.. boo..
You’ve used one?
*& Direct Print jokes.
If it’s easy to use, intuitive, better IQ…
than any crop DSLR Canon(I have my doubts about it being better than 1D3), Yes it will sell.
Can anybody find an explanation of auto ISO in AV and TV…like when the shutter speed/aperture is changed and when the ISO is changed? Is auto ISO not programmable in M or am I missing something?
LMAO OMG i just fell off my chair laughing…sorry i know its immature but funny as hell.
Its worth mentioning a similar same warning has been in every manual going back as far as the 1d Mark II (pg9).
The 1d MII warning is even worse, cautioning that just leaving the power switch on can cause burns.
With the new M.Fn button, after you’ve first pressed the rear AF point select button, each press of the M.Fn button toggles you through a diverse choice of AF areas:
* Manual AF point selection mode
* Spot AF point selection mode
* AF point expansion mode
* Automatic AF point selection mode
* Zone AF mode

There isn’t a lot in the manual, but see Pg 62.
And as long as Canon continues to put direct print buttons on DSLRs you all are going to have to live with Direct print button jokes.
maybe he’s going to send a letter of complaint to it
Man, the new AF functions alone deserve its own booklet, just like in the 1D3. It’s also to prevent Rob Galbraith-style wrong usage from turning into a “bad AF” experience.
Do you want my email address while you’re at it? Just ask your mom, she’s got it.
And by it, I mean my schlong
And by got, I mean sat on.
Early reports show the 7D to be improved on its usability…it will be the best crop dslr from Canon, short of the 1d3…but it doesn’t have to compete against the 1d3…it sells for 2000 less. In some areas, it is better than the 1d3.
Also, it has video, and it will be snapped up by indie film makers, film students, etc.
This will be a very popular camera…it already is generating a lot of buzz.
My advice to anyone wanting one: place your orders early.
I agree .. that is odd ..
usually the points allow for 5.6 and larger apertures at least the way canon usually writes it up.
Well, canon probably added all those gimmicks to AF so that any complaints would get a response as “user error” or using wrong mode.
Right, it’s just a big conspiracy.
Please, do everyone a favor and don’t buy this camera – it’s obviously over your head.
they have it written the same in the 50D and the 5D mark ii manuals (although the 5D mark ii only talks about the center AF point being cross type).
Can anyone confirm that all cross type AF points are sensitive to both vertical and horizontal lines in other f/5.6 kit lens on the 50D?
please dont buy 7D, i just bought one.. and going to return it soon… suck big times, i am going to get 5D Mark II instead
Got 7D last month, and returned it yesterday, I am going to get 7d MK II this month.
It is not conspiracy, but it is just being safe
Checking my 40D manual, the description looks accurate and nothing new. My 40D manual says the same thing word for word – no cross-type AF on f/5.6 lenses. So, I guess just normal AF.
Love you long time!
lol
The 7D hasn’t been released yet you tool.
Full frame will be less than $2K sooner or later — I was hoping this was going to be the unit to break the barrier. Since it is 18MP (less than the 5DMk2’s resolution), I was thinking/hoping that maybe it would be full frame. But, nope — is not to be. I’m thinking that for an APS-C camera, this is overpriced despite all of the included features and the pretty impressive image quality I’ve seen. But it doesn’t quite “blow me away” like the 5DMk2 or D700 images I’ve seen. Waiting on Nikon’s next full-frame release, and then I’ll probably pull the trigger.
I agree, the Canon USA website is in need of a big update. It has been lacking for several years.
I just bought the 7D and its so lame. I returned it and bought a 3D. this thing rocks it has 32847293 AF points
HAHAHA
I have just posted a comprehensive analysis of lenses for the 7D in the forum section of this site. Enjoy!
http://www.canonrumorsforum.com/index.php?board=4.0
LOL. A gimmick is when you put out 51-pt AF points but your AF CPU couldn’t handle it when it’s all used at the same time so you have to resort to using only 11 or 21-pts. (read: D300). If you think the 7D AF is waaay too complicated to use there are always P&S cams for you.
wow..kudos to testing 7D AF fully and confirming the results. RG has done a preview already. Go read it.
If you want a fool proof upgrade path with canon, stick to non EF-S lens(non crop). unless you really need ultra wide on a crop body.
Having read the manual, it seems that there is no custom function to adjust the frames per second like there is on the 1 series cameras.
I like to adjust them to 8fps and 5fps as the slower setting and i know i’m not the only one doing that. Seems like an odd thing to leave out.
You’re an idiot – the only person that thought it was funny was you. Sounds like you are overcompensating for that thimble you call a schlong (cue the “oh yeah, your Momma”).

Have a look at the Best Buy link above. They list the Canon 7D as supporting SD and SDCH cards, not CF I/II. What gives, although I’m pretty sure that best buy doesn’t even know what it’s getting, just posted some specs quickly… Didn’t see the 5DII on sale either @ Best Buy as it’s rumored to be.
WorstBuy also lists the 7D shutter speed ranges from 1/60 – 1/8000 sec.
Too bad the sales staff (if you can call them that) is too busy being force fed the new Windows7 party line to notice. (http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/news/2009/09/microsoft-teaches-best-buy-employees-how-to-troll-linux-users.ars)
ISO ranges from 100 – 6400, with H at 12800 via custom functions
Many people have alos become fans of Paul Smith Shoes since they came into the market. I also one of them , I very like Paul Smith Wallets and <a Paul Smith Belts,It designs very good.
