The 100-500 with 2x TC at mfd gives 0.8x magnification, which is not far off from macro, and at that distance you might not disturb insects that otherwise are a bit wary.

Something I have never seen before. I took some shots of a tiny Holly Blue Butterfly in my garden, and on downloading saw it was laying eggs. (R7 + 100-500mm).
