Believe it or not, 5D3 user misses the 300D reach...

All,

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences and pictures. I guess until I can afford a Canon 500 or 600 mm lens I will stick with a 1.4x multiplier. In Feb I expect Canon will release the updated firmware so that the 5D3 will be able to focus with f8. I know you guys even showed me what pins to tape so I might even try that...

No need to tape pins, I've used my 1dIV with a kenko 2x on a friends 100-400 and it focused at f11 accurately in low light although it took an obscene amount of time. With a kenko TC it sends back some of the data but it does not force the camera to use central AF points or to stop AF. When the photo imported into Lightroom the EXIF data still shows the TC adjusted focal length and correct aperture but for some reason it doesn't lock out small aperture AF. As I said before the kenko 1.4x performs just as well as the canon 1.4x III TC (the 2x however is a different story, the canon does have a clear advantage). I highly recommend purchasing a kenko 1.4x over the canon 1.4x. You save $200, have no need to tape pins, get the same great IQ and if you want to get crazy and stack TCs you don't need to use extension tubes. The only reason to go with a canon 1.4x III right now is weather sealing and/or the improved servo AF with the new series II canon supertelephoto primes.

I have been told that on another thread I started. Unfortunately, where I stay, no brick-and-mortar shop sells Kenko :(

I would not buy from Amazon or eBay as I am from India. Also it has been pointed out to me that weatherproofing may be an issue with the Kenko TCs. The price difference is not spectacular so I am opting for canon 1.4x...

Now if I buy a 1D4 as a second body in some time, I might think about a 2x Kenko when I travel to the US...

Thanks for the inputs.

You need to do some more Rithmetic. ;)

The 300D at 400mm gives you a 640mm FF-equivalent FoV, and a 6.3 MP image. The 5DIII at 400mm gives you a 400mm FoV, and a 22 MP image. If you crop the 5DIII image to the 640mm FoV, you'll have an 8.6 MP image with better IQ than the 300D image.

As I've said before, the 'crop factor' reach is an illusion when it comes to IQ - the only thing you're usually giving up is MP in the final image...and in the case of an old APS-C camera like the 300D, you're actually gaining MP with the cropped FF image.
You are right. I cant believe I did this calculation and forgot about it. I think it is perceived reach had my camera been a 7D/60D/650D...
