12 fps from the 1Dx? I want more!

Its actually time lapse photography done over and over. A really neat idea, but the frame rate is on the order of minutes per frame to capture.

It can certainly have some very useful scientific applications, and will undoubtedly open up some new discoveries as to the way things work.

A more practical 600 fps using the Phantom gold is here. The 225,000 Watts power requirements for the lighting were astounding.

I'd certainly like to have one of those lenses that can produce images like these at f/2. http://www.cookeoptics.com/cooke.nsf/products/s4i.html

I would be cool to fire a "white" (or laser R,G,B for pseudo-white) source through a block of glass or some water, and then onto a white card.

You might see the effect of the dispersive medium on the speed of propagation of the light, so that one colour came out and hit the white card first, then the next colour, and then the last, in order of wavelength. That would look cool. I suspect though that the "camera" used for this is actually monochrome though, so you'd need to use filters and "film" three times; one in each of {R, G, B} and then re-construct.

Since this imaging technique requires many, many exposures to build up the video 1 scan line at a time, I guess multiplying that by 3 (for the 3 filter colours) would not be TOO much of a hardship.

Its called video. Check it out. Framerates from 24fps up to 60fps! WOW! ;-P

Fail.

Actually I dont think they are too far off with the video thing... shows such as myth busters on occasion will bust out the high speed video camera where they crank up the FPS and slow down things such like flying bullets and such... I dont know about a trillion FPS, but interesting technology... I remember 10 years ago if we wanted to take photos of things faster than any camera could record, instead of speeding up the camera, we sped up the light.. For instance when I was at Brooks Institute, we would take photos of bullets in air... at the fastest shutter speed most cameras could do the bullets we were using was moving several feet and couldn't be stopped in action so we used a modified flash that basically let out a spark of light with 2 wires with a small gap connected to the two ends of a car battery... Using a time delay we would dial in what was the best location/time delay in the flash to trigger fire so we could get the bullet stopped... the spark was maybe less than a foot away from the bullets flightpath so there was little room for error but yeah...

They are doing something similar, using very short laser flashes. Its technically pretty difficult, far beyond just simple strobing, but is the same basic idea.

Major fail! Does help to actually read the linked article, doesn't it?! :-)

I read the article, it was interesting, what with the light passing down the coke bottle and all. I was not commenting on the body of his post, I was commenting on the title (which is why I manually copied in his title when I quoted, rather than the body...to attempt to convey that point), and the point was to be humorus.

So, I think the Failboat is on you guys this time. ;)

A bit different angle of this topic but don't you think that using 12 or more fps eliminates the single-shot portrait - that's faster you could blink or move, so AF or even MF with a 12 fps burst is not essential any more as you can stack the focus and still get sharp whatever you want. I guess this will become possible with the 1Dx. I'd like to know WHAT ARE 14 FPS GOOD FOR ? There are for sure many photo applications for them, what do you think?

Many of the high frame rates I've seen have been wildlife action shots where the best one is picked out. One I remember was a bird eating a prawn, the chosen shot showed it in mid air dead centre of the open beak, or a bear grabbing a salmon from a stream.

Of course it's used for sports too to get the optimum shots, or of politicians when you want that ugly grimace!
