24-70 f/2.8 L II Toughness?

I'm just wondering how much these lens can stand up to without damaging anything internally. Has anyone here had any mishaps?

I was on a power boat the other day and I was leaning over the side when a bounce caused my to slightly ding the bottom of the barrel against passenger side windshield. Everything seemed to work okay afterwards, but it got me thinking/worrying about possible damage or misalignment of elements.

A few days ago I saw a guy letting a 70-200/4 fall from at least 1,5m height directly on a rock. In the rush, he thought he locked the lens to the camera but he didn't. The lens is still working perfectly, it has just a deep scratch near the bayonet.
Last year, on a set, a camera assistant was running with a badly closed bag and I saw a 300/2,8 falling down three wooded stairs: several internal lenses went literally in pieces.
So, I guess the only way to know if your lens is damaged is to test it, but I really bet nothing happened, yours was really a minor accident and lenses, in my experience, are totally able to resist a shock like that.

Totally depends.

I have dropped WAY more than my fair share of camera gear. small little bumps and drops (less than 1-2 feet) lens has always been fine. sounds like your lens experienced a similar level of shock. test it, but it should be fine.

if you drop from higher your odds decrease from a 100% chance of being fine to zero in the case of a 600 foot drop down a mountain (don't ask....).

Thanks for the responses. My lens only had a slight bump. I don't think it was hard enough to do any damage. This thread was more about the durability Canon L lenses. I still will test my own lens though, just to be on the safe side.

Check the AFMA again if you did before; If it changed much you might have an issue.
