I have no empirical proof but I believe the 40mm pancake is a bit of a success for Canon. I certainly hear very few detractors on CR and it’s definitely on my list.
Do you think there is any chance they will make a 25mm pancake to go along with it? using the same shell as the 40 would it take much lens design?

Its easy to design and build a 40-60mm lens, but a 25mm is much tougher to build, particularl;y a FF version. I'm sure lots of people would like to see one, but the price might be a lot higher.

+1

Also, Canon wouldn't want their higher end WAs to loose sales to a pancake style lens. 40 pancake is cheap enough to find room in alot of camera kit bags as 'a nice to have lens' with decent quality.

My 2 cents.

wow twice the price and I have to focus heck it’s only curved glass ;D

Thanks all for the input, I just really liked the idea of having a 40mm (equivalent) on aps-c I have no idea and cannot comment on the complexities of a 25mm lens design for a 44mm flange, ah well my dreams are shattered :'( ……..

if you can live with manual focus there is the Voigtländer 20mm f/3.5 SL-II

This little guy goes everywhere with my 40mm pancake
they share 52mm filters too which are cheap to get CPL, 10 stop ND etc

Hard stop infinity focus, awesome build
also its electronic aperture control and the AF confirm is fast and accurate but at f8 and infinity basically everything more than 2m away is in focus anyway,

its a brilliant street photography lens

good ol KR has a review of it
