3 photos in one raw file: Need help/advice

Hi Mt Spokane.
Op says it is a 5DIII which will take a Compact Flash and SD card, no Cfast card so no fix? Also it happened on both cards which would take a real huge dose of coincidence for both cards to fail together, to me this would suggest either a power interruption, loose battery grip or something during a burst write process or a more serious issue with the camera, but I'm really only guessing based on the information given.

Cheers, Graham.

Is it on your backup card as well? It looks like a typical card error, it could be a download issue, or a card issue. Have you updated the Camera Firmware for the Cfast card issue? If not, update it.

Yea, two card error/corruption can't happen same or even close to similar. So something else happened there. Most likely not able to recover.

I'd agree that an identical double card error is unlikely, therefore a camera write or buffer (cache?) Issue?

What I find really strange about that image though is that the top part has been taken vertically, the bottom two horizontal. Therefore I'd assume a reasonable amount of time between the top shot and the other two? So I'd expect the buffer to have cleared.

Were the three shots taken consecutively?
Were you using a really slow SD card?
Were you using single shot or high fps continuous?

If it was a computer I'd say switch it off pull all batteries and reverse. You can't do that at a wedding! Happened twice on the same day, I'd find it very hard to trust that camera. Hopefully you're cps, I'd contact Canon.

Ha ... I read that 1DX Mark II under his screen name, and missed the info in the post. Yes, if the issue is on both cards, then its very likely that a camera issue caused it. It could be something as simple as a loose cable in the camera that occasionally causes a glitch to something more serious.

Has the camera been repaired in the past year? One of the cables inside might not be completely seated? Just one of a zillion possibilities.

Intermittent issues are really difficult, but low hanging fruit like loose cables are easy to check. But, if the camera has never been opened, that seems unlikely that its a loose cable, then a power glitch like a intermittent card door switch might be the first thing to check.

What raw converter are you using? It could be possible that as third party raw converters have to reverse engineer Canons proprietary raw format in much the same way that third party lens manufacturers have to reverse engineer lens to body communications, occiasional problems could occur. I've never heard of this before, but it could be worth trying another raw converter, with Canons own DPP being the favoured option.
